Elba is given some room to flex and it’s not the worst-looking movie I’ve ever seen but I’m not sure they could have made a safer, more conventional version of this even if they tried… Like Bono did the credits song.

Best movie about Mandela, period. Justin Chadwick tells the chronicle of Nelson Mandela’s life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa. Numerous actors has portrayed the legend from the likes of Danny Glover, Morgan Freeman, etc. Idris Elba is the latest to join and while he physically doesn’t look like him, he does the accent pretty decent and does the mannerisms very well. Elba is a very underrated actor for me and here he’s given the best role of his movie career so far. He’s excellent and definitely deserved that Golden Globe nod. Naomie Harris is very solid as Winnie. Great cinematography and production design. A moving and terrific score by Alex Heffes. U2’s “Ordinary Love” is another classic from them. This was a truly great and important movie of one of the most amazing human beings put on earth, Mr. Nelson Mandela. RIP, Madiba.

“It is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” This is an ambitious film because it centers on an inspiring figure who made history by overcoming hate and uniting the South African nation. The only problem is that the story of Nelson Mandela is just too long to try to encapsulate in a film, and this biopic suffers from it by trying to chronicle his entire life journey. I felt the film rushed through several decades of his life highlighting every major event, but never digging deep enough. The biopic lacks those illuminating elements that Mandela’s life had, and it just felt dull and overlong. This is a straightforward biopic with very conventional storytelling, which at times under…

So I only scored Invictus (2009) 1 and a half stars and it seemed like a better production with more emotion and a larger budget largely because I didn’t find it very entertaining on a personal level. While the story of Nelson Mandela was told more completely here, I found this film a bit less entertaining in general, probably due to the fact that I found Matt Damon entertaining in the role of pro-rugby player and Morgan Freeman much more convincing as Mandela. Sure this film is well made and somewhat emotionally moving, I just had a hard time connecting with it enough to enjoy it myself. 2013 Ranked 2010’s Ranked Jails & Prisons Ranked True(ish) Stories Ranked

It must have been a highly surreal experience for those present at the London première of the film, the same day that the man himself passed away. Watching a celebration of a man’s life whilst grief envelops the world is not a situation many will find themselves in again. The film itself has been adapted by Mandela’s autobiography of the same name, so with many other TV and big screen depictions of his life surely to come, this will stand as the definitive version. The choice of Idris Elba has stood out as the most surprising cast choice, given his size and lack of facial similarity. Come the end of the 150 minute epic, those details rarely become an issue,…

Although it runs at 141 minutes, this film is far too short. It was always going to be too short, no matter what. The life of Nelson Mandela can never confined into a single feature film. Well, I guess it technically can, because it has been with Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom…but a successful biopic about the man will never exist. If we were talking about the possibility of an 8-10 part miniseries chronicling Mandela, then we might have something to anticipate. Justin Chadwick’s film hurries through so many events in the extraordinary life of its subject, thus we never get to spend the right amount of time with any significant moments. Poor Idris Elba. He proves once again to…

The real story of Nelson Mandela incredible and uplifting. Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom tries for those adjectives but does not reach them. Idris Elba and Naomi Harris play Nelson and Winnie Mandela in this movie. I liked both of their performances….although I was not too impressed with the old man makeup on Elba. Ultimately I think trying to cover over 50 years of someone’s life in a little over 2 hours is asking too much. Characters are introduced and dispatched so quickly…that I never really got emotional attached to them. I am sure a heartfelt emotional lifting movie on Nelson Mandela can be made….but this is not the one. The 138th major release of 2013 that I have watched. ”No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin. People learn to hate. They can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart.” Can you make an engaging biopic about someone who spent all his life fighting injustice and racism and include all of the milestones and details of his life? It’s not impossible to do so but it’s not an easy thing to do either. Here Justin Chadwik and William Nicholson try to condense almost every bit of Nelson Mandela’s life into a 140 minute film and given that Mandela’s life was quite an eventful one it’s not a surprise that they fail to make an impression. It seems…

Whenever I watch or read biographies, which this movie is, I always approach it with a healthy skepticism. Because that’s just my nature and people tend to be biased most of the time. I just returned from South Africa, and of course, Mandela is a signicant figure to the world, let alone South Africa. I’ve been to Robben Island where he was imprisoned and I’ve met people who were imprisoned alongside him, which only made me want to dive deeper…

I never knew Mandela was such a brick shithouse. This is quintessential biopic faire, probably bats a little higher than average. Broad strokes, a decently convincing central performance, and the prevailing sense that there’s a lot of the story you aren’t and could never get in this time.

I was forced to watch it in English class, but I ended up loving the story.

Idris Elba put in a great performance, but wow Naomi Harris as Winnie wowed me even more. I did feel like it was informative and interesting, probably more than a little sanitized cause dear god apartheid was a horrible, horrible time with ramifications and disenfranchisement effects still ever-present today, but obviously the film was focusing more on Mandela’s life as a whole as a bio-drama. This may have been to the film’s detriment though lol, Mandela is an interesting person…

Very jumpy and confusing story telling. I don‘t think his whole life story works that well as one feature film I liked the cinematography though

Fine movie. It didn’t explore too deeply into Mandela as a person. It all feels like a surface level interpretation of Mandelas life. Great acting all around but the lack of exploration in their real life people makes it feel abit hollow. Direction was alright. I felt strong emotional response to the horrors of African apartheid. That was delivered pretty well. But the movie did not flow smoothly with each key event and time skip. It feels like a movie that does not represent a deserving depiction for the real life figure of nelson mandela.

For a biopic about Nelson Mandela I admit I was expecting more and it’s def not mid but I’d say it’s decent at best. Idris Elba gives an extraordinary performance as Nelson Mandela and while he looks nun like him, his brilliant performance makes up for that. Happy heavenly birthday, Nelson Mandela

I did like Elba’s performance in this movie, the accent was kind of iffy at moments, and he doesn’t necessarily look like Mandela but he has an uncanny ability to get you to suspend your disbelief. Naomie Harris played tf out her role too

can’t even rate this because my professor skipped about half of it (who needs to see the trial and imprisonment?)
