Had the volume down too low so missed much of the dialogue. Restarted the movie, and for a second time in 30 minutes cried at the opening credits. Wow. What to say. Malcom X as his core is not overly complex. That is not to say that he’s simple or doesn’t wrestle with himself throughout the movie, but rather, that he knows ultimately what he wants, what he desires for black people, with the world around him instead resisting him.…

Fun fact I only just discovered today: the script of this masterpiece was actually written by none other than James Baldwin in the 1970’s (his family estate requested his name be removed from the credits as Spike Lee was doing script revisions, though Lee maintains not much was changed). So it makes even more sense then that despite it being a bio-pic, the focus is squarely on Malcom’s intellectual development and even intellectual trajectory rather than life events – only really life events when they inform Malcom’s own ideological conciousness. That’s also why this is just about the least “Oscar-baity” bio-pic one could possibly ever make, even with Spike Lee toning down his usual formal approach. It’s also why this…

It is almost impossible to make a good biopic for the simple reason that a human life — any human life — is too complicated for the form. You can’t actually fit the full scope of someone’s life in a 120 minute movie. It’s why the best films in the genre center on a singular event in an individual’s life versus the full sweep of their experiences. And even then, it’s tough. Malcolm X is a traditional biopic in that it attempts to tell the story of the civil rights leader from start to finish. But rather than try to avoid or work around the fact that lives — to say nothing of the life of Malcolm X — are big and…

The cinematic epic of American Blackness. I’d say it belongs in the fucking Smithsonian, but that’s a white man’s museum for a white man’s history.

When the white girl at the college asks Malcolm X what she can do to help his people, he responds with a blunt “Nothing.” Though Malcolm X would later come around on this idea, the context of that girl’s question stands out. She precedes it by asserting that she’s not a bad person despite what her ancestors did, and… it’s not that simple. If your parents killed someone and stole their wealth, I would not argue that you stand trial for their crimes, but I would argue that the wealth they stole should be returned. That girl (and myself) have both benefited from the white supremacist world we live in, and though we are not guilty of enslaving people or…

Monumental and unfathomable, even moreso with the knowledge of its production. Decided to finally jump into this one after starting the Malcolm X episode of What Went Wrong and I’m glad I did. Unbelievable performance by Denzel, cannot believe the same person at the same age is delivering the performance at the beginning and end of the film. There’s a moment where Malcolm gets enraged at a threat to his mother where he instantly looks like such a different person that it’s like watching Bilbo grab at the ring. Would make for a wonderful double feature with The Master, as two (very different) stories of wayward men in search of something to rule them, finding solace and a new life…

the two shots of the fires burning down homes two hours apart, about men holding their families as their houses blaze behind them, looking off in the distance of the racists that did it with fury, and knowing that this is the sign of their painfully inevitable demise. by the time malcolm himself sees the flames and in essence, becomes his father, he’s living on borrowed time, only a matter of moments or scenes before he dies before he should, at the hands of bigots with weapons and most importantly power. you can almost see it in his eyes, that death is coming for him, because he committed the crime of being black and not letting his oppressors control him any longer. this is the great american tragedy, not just malcolm but for all the black people slaughtered due to their skin and their strength. one of the greatest films and lead performances you’ll ever see

Absolute masterclass in acting by Denzel Washington. And the story sharing his life journey through different stages was so enjoyable and almost genre bending. + And the Mandela cameo at the end gave me 2pac in “Mortal Man” vibes ikyk

A fantastic Denzil, a near perfect craft from Spike Lee. But Malcom lived a flawed life, he let himself brainwashed by strategically engineered radical religious fundamentalists propaganfa masquerading as a Black liberation, then he continued to support misogynistic systematic religious opression, sure he was reformed n the end but for most of his life he was just another larger than life cult leader who wanted everyone to obey him without question, which is bad precedent nonmatter the face…. I acknowledge his anger toward deeply rooted racism by western imperialists.

Masterful. Superlative leading performance, supported well by the rest of the cast. All three thirds are completely distinct and yet flow really well from the other, telling the story really well over the 200 minute runtime. Can’t imagine a better biopic

Malcom X was a flawed man with many imperfect principles. What made him an icon was his journey to make the world a better place for African Americans to live peacefully with equal rights as the Whites. His journey from a carefree youth to an influential leader was legendary and Spike Lee captures the journey in Epic fashion. Denzel Washington gives one the best performances of his career as Malcolm X. The acting was truly spectacular and throughout the whole…

-Outstanding performance from Denzel Washington, the resemblance is uncanny -Did not expect the film to go certain places. It literally goes from goodfellas, to Shawshank redemption, to National Geographic; there’s even two choreographed dance sequences, it’s literally insane how big this movie was in terms of actors and performers -I did think the first hour of the film felt a little slow and could have been shorter, but boy, once it shows Malcolm X hit rock bottom in prison, the…

Temptations to edify and eulogize find no home in Malcolm X. Instead, the chronicle of a life lived broadly and fervently is laid bare with all its panache, curiosity, trouble, and longing. Unpleasantries are not shirked, but embraced; holes are dug, and half-filled; questions are asked, if only to ensure that the current answer is not allowed to be the final one. What a staggering work of art and biography. That it was so sidelined from the awards circuit is…

crazy in-flight choice for me but a feat for both spike and denzel nonetheless. denzel’s so fucking charismatic. who else but him could’ve done malcolm justice? so many cool shots. the dolly scene is obviously so iconic but the shot where he reacts to jfk’s death is so stunning. the history we’re taught made malcolm seem violent, corrosive, uncompromising. but we actually need to start getting more radical and we need to start doing it now, i fear.

This movie packs a lot into its 3 hour run time. My favorite use of Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’. Denzel should have won every award possible for his performance. This movie made me purchase ‘The Autobiography of Malcom X’. I was encapsulated the whole movie, and I liked Spike Lee’s cinematography choices. My only gripe with the movie was the first 45 minutes or so. I thought some of these scenes were a little off tonally as…

“The thing to me that is worse than death itself is betrayal.” I mean I don’t know how Denzel didn’t win an Oscar for this like wow. I also didn’t watch Al Pacino’s scent of a woman so I should probably watch that first but wow this is insane, actors in biopics are just so impressive sometimes but specifically this. Honestly feel like there coulda been more in this even though it was long.

Self-determination is fundamental in boyhood, nationhood, and personhood. Without self-determination, one may not even be self-aware, let alone be able to overcome oppression. If I have to summarize the central theme of Spike Lee’s epic biopic “Malcolm X,” the most important movie in his career, it would be the statement above. Malcolm X’s story is the story of the actualization of self-determination, from his personal journey to his religious-political vision. We see the transformation of Malcolm Little, burning his scalp…
