Not sure how I’d missed this for so long. It’s a fun little B-movie that sort of drags but has a few pretty special things going for it: 1- It’s only set a few years in the future. So it’s sort of post-apocalyptic but they still have the news and shit. More post-apocalyptic media should take a page out of this book and calm down. 2- The budget is clearly so low that all of the car crashes are exciting to watch because you can tell they only had the one take to nail it. 3- I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure this is the movie that invented the 80s action movie trope of “all bad guys are…

the people who write descriptions for movies on netflix need to be “put through a dark experience”. had never seen this before and the fuckin netflix description says “a malicious gang murders Max’s family”. that doesnt happen until an hour and 15 minutes into the movie! theres like 20 minutes left when they kill his wife! should be illegal. how hard can it be to write a spoiler free description. “Max brings his own special brand of madness to the Australian wasteland. Nobody is safe as he takes cancel culture head on.” “Cars? Check. Australia? Check. Guy named Max? Check. This post-apocalyptic landscape is about to get crazy.” “Welcome to Australia. Population: Mad Max.” ^ heres some freebies you fucking idiots

“I am the Nightrider! I’m a fuel injected suicide machine! I am the rocker! I am the roller! I am the out-of-controller!” – The Nightrider Thing is, there isn’t enough madness to get Mad Max into the echelons of cultdom that it supposedly deserves to be in. It begins with a phenomenal car chase that uses its meagre budget extremely effectively, and ends with an equally as thrilling crescendo of bikes and one seriously bad-ass muscle car. But in between, the only mad thing is the incoherent ramblings of the villains that threaten to derail the entire film. Neither intimidating nor scary, they are a bunch of loons that don’t provide the viewer with any visceral reaction. Then again, neither…

Definitely gives off “we ran out of budget” vibes in the third act but overall an absurd directorial debut. The score goes insanely hard! I spent the whole movie thinking “Well yeah, obviously Brian May of Queen would turn out something this phenomenal” and then I checked Wikipedia afterwards and it was a different Brian May

A riveting and minimalist action film of bare-bone badassery and primal rage; George Miller’s Mad Max is the one that started it all, and after all these years, It still remains one of the best low-fi experiences that you can have. Miller’s directing, Cliff Hayes and Tony Paterson’s editing, David Eggby’s cinematography, and Brian May’s score all comes together into a type of visual shock treatment. You can smell the gasoline radiating off of the screen, and in spite of some rough patches with the pacing and some budget constraints, Mad Max continues to be a dazzling ride. Oh, and Mel Gibson is a badass.

52/100 What a strange film this is. Structurally, it makes little sense: The opening sequence (which is far and away the zenith) introduces Max as an iconic badass, defined by his shades, clothes, and silence; then he’s immediately revealed as a perfectly ordinary family man, sensitive and conscientious (wait what?); then the movie proceeds to methodically turn him back into the iconic badass it had already established in the first few minutes. Even ignoring that circular arc, though, this feels like a very bloated origin story—an entire movie fashioned from what ought to have been the first 35 minutes or so of a much better movie. Gee, I wonder what the much better movie in question might look like? (Gonna revisit that very shortly.) A promising dry run, but I’m baffled by folks like Dan Sallitt who find actual greatness in its roughly 1:5 ratio of formally impressive mayhem to deeply awkward melodrama.

i find this movie fascinating in a metatextual sense more than i actually enjoy it; the structure is insane, with a climax that feels like the inciting incident and makes the whole movie feel like a prequel. the fact that it made $100 million is baffling until you watch the making of doc on the disc and realize the car action is another case of “this thing only seems pretty good because it essentially invented something you see all the time now.” the movie was inspired by george miller’s morbid experiences as a doctor. it cost $400,000. so many of the stunts were just them going “this is gonna be dangerous but do it anyway.” it’s honestly awesome to see so many of miller’s trademarks fully formed right out of the gate, and to realize that budgets have not squashed any of his ingenuity, only accelerated it. also why does the baby have a gun for one shot

The birth of madness. A movie where the shoestring budget is an asset because every crash feels like calamity (for the character and the production itself). But also, a strange movie. The whiplash of seeing the seeds of a road warrior being planted and then cut to Max spending quality time with his family is comically jarring, but I suppose it does make for a more effective ending.

A remarkable document of ingenuity and style. It takes Max nearly 75 minutes to go mad and the whole time we’re waiting and waiting and waiting until something terrible arrives. This one has a lot in common with Furiosa, maybe the most of any of the five films.

Mad Max: He Does Nothing But Watch Everyone In His Life Do Stuff Very surreal to be watching this on a drive to Canberra where the roads are straight and the land is more flat than Mel Gibson’s performance. Dunno what I was on about giving this two stars on my first watch. Did I even watch it? Pretty fricken cool. Very badass. It’s a crime Vincent Gil wasn’t in more movies. EDIT: (Just found out today is the anniversary of his passing. R.I.P to an Australian legend. Long live the Nightrider.)

portal film fest 2026 #1 i’m so glad to have finally seen it and i’ve gotta say i’m surprised. i always thought it was a revenge story of the punisher variety, whereas that’s just the finale, one that feels a bit rushed and lacklustre by the time it comes. everything slowly leading up to it though? that’s a way more interesting thriller where max isn’t a lone vigilante, but a part of a charismatic and colorful motley crew of cops…

– They say people don’t believe in heroes anymore. Well damn them! You and me, Max, we’re gonna give them back their heroes! – Ah, Fif. Do you really expect me to go for that crap? – You gotta admit I sounded good there for a minute, huh?

Definitely an uncomfortable watch, but not one that made me want to turn it off. It’s all to drive a message. The biker gang are merciless and cruel, reminiscent of the people who want to watch the world burn. Especially in the apocalypse setting, it’s such a powerful analogy and one that made me shift in my bed. It starts off slow and I was vibing but at the same time not entirely getting it, but once Goose is injured, it kicks off into something spectacular. So, all in all, as an Australian, I approve of this biopic.

And just like that.. max became mad. I know the franchise from the game and i expected for the world to be a wasteland and i still hope next movies will be set there.

Tons of character charm and car crashes what more do you need The soundtrack was kind of generic though and imo it didn’t fit the tone a lot of the time, a better one would rly elevate the movie Oh plus true to Mel Gibson form it’s pretty homophobic

Unfortunately, for an action movie that eventually turned into so much more, this was an absolute snooze fest that was all over the place. – First, the sound mixing. Genuinely probably the most poorly sound mixed film I’ve ever heard. I couldn’t hear shit, couldn’t understand shit, & then the engines were roaring over all the conversation. I also thought the editing was quite weak. So many important shots are cut off so quick you don’t get to breathe with any…

Picked up Furiosa as the only one of these that I haven’t seen yet but I felt like revisiting this one first. It’s the one I come back to the least. And yet it’s been on my mind a lot as of late. The pull here is that it’s a society in the process of deteriorating. There wasn’t a bomb dropped. There wasn’t a disease. There sure as hell weren’t any zombies. The government just slowly stopped functioning in any…

If I had a nickel for every time an Australian film featured a man chained by the ankle who is handed a handsaw and has to choose between sawing the chain or his foot off, I’d have two nickels. Not a lot, but weird that it happened twice, right?

kindergarten cadence and loose even tousled scores. But the unchained figure design and maniac editing style within the act makes it outstanding. Toecutter’s bipolar moves completely overshadowed the villains in later works, who were created through campy appearance designs. And whoever figurined this bald-moustached-chest-bulked MFP chief with lush body hair and skinny leather pants and cabinet black tie watering flowers met tiny spray is absolutely queerer than Kenneth Anger

Davvero assurdo

This and Citizen Kane are testaments as to why it’s important to let and encourage outsiders to a medium to still participate and play around the medium in their own way. This film could not have been made today because everyone is so up their own asses about wanting to be a film critic or film buff or director or whatever that they lack any actual life experiences to make interesting movies off of, leading to the Ouroborus of ideas that we see in today’s landscape as they try to emulate past movies instead of making anything actually interesting. Tldr, Fuck Credentialism and Fuck Snobbery

As an Australian who lived through the fuel wars of 2026 caused by shipment blockages in the Strait of Hormuz – this is a 100% authentic representation of Melbourne. Structurally bonkers, but so many exciting stylistic choices that George Miller M.D. made here are carried on through his filmography. What a debut.

A milestone of australian filmmaking and also Mel Gibson’s rise to stardom. Apocalyptic spaghetti western with roaring engines instead of horses, and the classic typology of colourful characters, a deadly battle in no man’s land between borderline demented villains and a reluctant and irascible enforcer. Bloody, raw, rambunctious editing and visual display.
