The truly unique thing about the Mad Max franchise is how Max is less a character than a mythic figure, and how each film is less an entry in a continuing story and more a retelling of the myth of Max, with the details getting more extravagant and incredible as time goes on. It’s one of my favorite narrative conceits, and it works incredibly in this film, which is explicitly framed as the recollections of an old man, telling the story of the hero who saved him.

So, uh, yeah. I probably should have watched this sooner. (In my defense, I had seen MAD MAX and didn’t particularly like it.) This movie is exactly one year and one day younger than I am, but it’s aged so much better than me. Next up, MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME. I’ll be similarly wowed by that one, right? Right? Where are you guys going? Don’t you want to watch it with me?

I remember a time of chaos… ruined dreams… this wastedland. But most of all, I remember The Road Warrior. Incredible the way this movie amplifies the mythology of Mad Max— Miller is cooking with rocket fuel.

a series of notes i wrote down while watching mad max 2 – could you imagine if George Miller made a Star Wars movie. this movie feels so distinctly inspired by Star Wars. i need lucasfilm to get BROKE and start making some big swings – not not gonna be Humungus for halloween – the secret to a good child performance is not letting them talk – the timeline of these movies is hilariously confounding. the amount the world has changed by Furiosa is insane. don’t even think about it. – for all the criticism of how Fury Road isn’t even a Mad Max movie because of Furiosa (dumb, tinged with misogyny) The Road Warrior is very much a movie…

A pretty crazy step up from the first one, this could almost be 4 1/2, the action, set design, costume design, and cinematography are all absolutely incredible and I know Spectre out did it, but this is still the best shot explosion in film history, BY FAR, that was actually insane.

That opening introduction reminded me alot of the fallout 1 and 2 openings and it made my thingy stand up. I love that post apocalyptic world atmosphere and especially when its set in an area where people kill eachother for survival and lose their minds trying to find resources to defend themselves from eachother. It was so much better than the first one

10/10, lives up to the status of being one of the best action movies of all time

For me, this is the first real Mad Max film. It’s the one the created the style & look of all the following films. I love the dirty & gritty look of the film, makes it feel more realistic, Gibson really comes into his own as Max in this one, & Max’s evolution across the film is great. The fact that a lot of the film is told without dialogue is really impressive & the action is amazing, particularly the practical effects. Also, justice for Max’s dog. :'(

My favorite Mad Max movie. Mainly because I love the camp and improvement from the first movie ever so slightly over the third movie. Also my Uncle Rob got me the Humungus action figure which is definitely one of the better material gifts I’d gotten, after I told him over Wordle that the character would be the ultimate action figure… Perfect 10 for Aussies and fellow Max’s worldwide alike.

this was all right. i actually preferred the moments in the film where characters are talking to another, as i thought it was an interesting look into this world and its dynamics. sadly, the action didn’t do much for me, even if it was well done, though i admit i was tired.

Aurilla

Mel Gibson has a total of 16 lines throughout the whole film. Mad Max 2 is very different than Mad Max, it almost feels like a reboot rather than a sequel. Film starts with a huge time lapse between the 2 films with a whole new purpose and environment which is more relevant to the franchise we know. Compared to the first film, everything is just better: effects, atmosphere settings, scenario, even the colors. We finally get to see the real…

This is the true Fallout film, the inspiration is clear as day. Mad Max 2 is an amazingly unique looking film. Its camera work is great and isn’t afraid to zoom out to show its baron wasteland, populated only by its scrappy vehicles and diverse characters. Everything is practical, resulting in satisfying action as real bits of car fly everywhere. I really like how there’s not much dialogue —making it feel powerful when it is used — and instead letting ambient sound tell the story.

Wonderfully bananas sequel that is a rollicking good time. George Miller is as punk rock as it gets with his direction and the set pieces are great. Laid the groundwork for Fury Road which remakes the final 25 minutes of this flick for its full run time.

63/100 Now this is what I imagined the classic Mad Max movies would be, dystopian wasteland combat with cars held together by tape and a dream, and a bald gimp as the villain. Much better than the first one.

Only the greatest action movie ever made. Max, the feral boy, Humongous, Wez, The Gyro Captain…. Just a perfect storm of unforgettable story, action, and characters. So iconic from start to finish that to this day no other action movie has even come close to dethroning The Road Warrior.

So much better than the og, now I get where fury road came from lol All that for a drop of fuel 😜 Also Max saying “I’m just here for the gasoline” was totally giving “I’m just here for the zip line”

L
-

It’s fascinating how perfectly the original Mad Max trilogy resembles a bell curve. you can see from the first shot of this that George Miller had a lot more money to work wtih, and boy did he use it well. It’s wild what two years and an extra 4.1 million dollars can do for a franchise.

Sticking again to a taut ninety minutes, and thus successfully retaining the audience’s attention throughout, the setting for the second Mad Max remains the weirdly detached, surrealist and shocking remote landscape of a post-apocalyptic Australia; characterised by a cartoonish survivalist culture and the inherent dangers within. But whilst there are still some illogical narrative inconsistencies, this avant-garde sequel is a definitive improvement on the original – if only because everything about it just feels more fleshed-out. There is still plenty…

2 / Mad Max 2 Now this more like it. George Miller is back, and he’s got a boatload of cash to make the movie he wanted to make. Meanwhile Mel Gibson has really embraced the role of the malevolent spirit inhabiting the shell of a former human being, willing to do anything to survive in the scorched out landscape of a dystopian world. This time we got a much better script and the stunt work is better…

This movie is to the post-apocalyptic genre what Romero’s Night of the Living Dead was to the zombie genre. It’s gritty and darkly funny. Mel Gibson is a flawed person but he’s electric in this movie. It’s the best anti-hero performance since Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns. People are always puzzled by the ubiquity of assless chaps in this movie. Yeah. It’s ill-advised to go bare-ass when you’re a roving tribe of bandits. You’re camping out in the rough where…

It looks mega compared to the first one. Especially Vernon Wells’ bum.
-
C
Honestly, I thought it would improve in my estimation on rewatch, but if anything this rating feels generous. While mythologically and visually it creates the template that Fury Road would later perfect, the structural simplicity of Mad Max feels closer spiritually. Also, I hate the feral kid.

-

This film had some really cool practical effects, decent acting from Mel Gibson, and really he’s the best part, and some amazing cinematography, you really feel the wasteland around you. However some elements are absurd, a lot of the acting of the side characters is bad, but all the chase scenes look amazing and are fun to watch, the film is quick and never outstays its welcome. Ultimately a cool action sci fi film with good costume design, elevated by watching Max grow and change from the last film.
-
N
honestly is way better than the original film as the action packed practical stuntwork is pretty fucking spectacular, a major highlight, like BOOM! CRASH! EXPLOSIONS! stuff like that and adding a dystopian punk aesthetic to it stands out in the wasteland and its characters. solid mythical storytelling, amazing performances from Mel Gibson and incredible direction by George Miller. that’s all, this is just really enjoyable and gritty.

Takes everything that’s good about the first one and ups it in size, scale and mythology. I liked seeing the war between different tribes and the backstory of how this post apocalyptic Australia came to be. We get to see mad max as a dark, lonely and twisted character for the full movie in this and at it presents him almost as a legend that folks tell story’s about which is cool. Classic western storytelling of a war between tribes…

If you like the first one equal to or better, call this, Mad Max 2. But… If you think this one is a great standalone thrill ride, call it The Road Warrior. It gives enough context to the character for us to care, but having a whole movie before this one to really learn about him and give us a deep concern is great. Excited to see the third.

Such a cool follow up to the first and major stepping stone for the rest of the franchise. Simple, punchy action with just enough narrative to keep you hooked!
-

Doesn’t compare to Fury Road for me. Maybe it blew people away when it came out but it’s quite average for the most part and nowhere near as weird, pacey or tight as Fury Road or even Furiosa. Even at about 90 mins I felt you could cut some of the film.

I feel like I’ve seen this movie like 50x but nonetheless this movie was sick. Any scene where someone got killed made me second guess if they actually killed the person in real life. Some of the scenes were gnarly. The Lord and his henchmen were fucking nasty villains. When the kid killed the trans lover with the razor boomerang…chefs kiss of a scene. Made the movie so sinister as the henchmen was now bloodthirsty for revenge.

Smashing, crashing, shooting & burning its way through the desolate Australian outback, Max 2 is a carnage of camp & a riot of raucous, punk infused dynamism! Max 2 is what we remember when we recall the modified, gas powered, weapons bristling warmobiles. Unusually for a sequel, 2 is the iconic entry in the series & achieves this because of its sheer exuberance, world building, desolation & ofc its pyrotechnics, set & vehicle design & its off the charts stunt work. Narratively 2 is concerned more…

We really should have just got George Miller to shoot every car chase scene from this point onwards. Fury Road and Furiosa offer a greater scale for these big rig chase scenes – and I think those films both benefit from stronger characterisation – but what Miller is able to accomplish here with more limited resources is so impressive. I do love the ridiculous aesthetic of Miller’s world and how restlessly inventive everything is from costume design to makeshift weaponry.…

action movies are mostly gay in a closeted insecure andrew tate follower kinda way but at least this film doesn’t shy away from it. guys wearing black leather with their asses out on a chain fighting to avenge their twink lover killed by a boomerang. i did like this movie much more than the first, it’s more over the top, crazy and action packed but it does still have some choppy editing, scenes (death scenes in particular) that could’ve been fleshed out more, and like all early 80s adventure/action films there has to be the goofy loveable sidekick/s.

9/10 The Road Warrior is a really great movie. Until Fury Road came around, it was the definitive Mad Max movie. Even so, it still holds up incredibly well in all aspects and is still a blast today. Not to mention it is also an incredibly important foundational piece in post-apocalyptic cinema. Awesome film, definitely recommend.

Still one of the all-timers. The lawless vision of the future, the oddball characters, and some of the greatest car action ever done. Every detail just hums with confidence in this, and the dialogue is way more sparse than I remember. Even the narration is more building up the mythological aspect rather than getting caught up in exposition.

Moğolları çekmeyelim diye şekilden şekle giren Hollywood Mad Max’te benzer tat bırakıyor. Anlayamadığım nokta neden sürekli hareket hâlinde olmak zorundalar ki? Göçebe hayat ama at yerine modifiye arabalarla.

The first movie discovered car crashes, this one discovered explosions. It is actually fascinating to see how much the tropes and techniques changed in just three years since the original, it FEELS like an 80s movie in the same way the first one felt like a 70s movie. This one felt much more cohesive with the narrative structure and must have taken the notes from the first one and actually explained what the fuck was going on so that was…

A real blast of a sequel, less violent but a lot more spectacular. Dashiell Hammett’s Red Harvest is done again, as Kurosawa did in Yojimbo, Leone in Per un pugno di dollari, and the Coens in Miller’s Crossing. That means, once again a stranger has interfered with two rebellious factions fighting for the power. The mysterious road warrior arrives in the dusty australian landscape to turn the battle into an exhilarating apocalyptic stampede, meeting new allies and enemies, each one freakier than the next.

- Synopsis
- Max Rockatansky returns as the heroic loner who drives the dusty roads of a postapocalyptic Australian Outback in an unending search for gasoline. Arrayed against him and the other scraggly defendants of a fuel-depot encampment are the bizarre warriors commanded by the charismatic Lord Humungus, a violent leader whose scruples are as barren as the surrounding landscape.
