My buddy Kyle rented out a movie theater for his birthday. He invited a group of 30 of us to come watch “a horror film from my own private collection” without specifying which movie it was. He warned us that the horror movie he picked was very messed up, out there and quite disturbing, and actually really gross in parts. Then he started the movie and it was Mac and Me. He did the Rudd thing IRL. Five stars.

I’m guessing this is where the term ‘cinematic hate crime’ comes from.

Back when I was in college, one of our projects was to create a webpage about anything we wanted to. So I decided to make my site dedicated to the best movie in the history of cinema, Mac and Me. Sadly, I got an email from the college yesterday saying they are shutting down the server hosting the site on May 27, 2015. So I figured I should rewatch the movie a post the site here while it is still up and running. If you are reading this sometime in the future, the link below won’t work and you have missed the greatest webpage ever made. Enjoy! Mac and Me Shrine

Recently, I let my 10-year-old son join Letterboxd. And how does he repay me???? By rating two of my all time favorite movies (Pee Wee’s Big Adventure and Big Trouble in Little China) half a star each!!! But then it occurred to me….maybe my son doesn’t know what a real half star movie looks like 😈. Enter, my pick for movie night, Mac & Me. And even though I consider this a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ classic, I assume this screening would have to make him second guess everything he knows about what makes a ‘good’ movie. Surely he can’t keep Pee Wee and Jack Burton at a half star rating if he knows Mac and his friends are sucking back Cokes at…

For years, my friend Peter swore that his version of MAC AND ME showed the main kid being blown away by a police officer. None of us believed him. We assumed it was rose-colored nostalgia casting a fog, like the memory, like multiple kids remembering the scene in COMMANDO where Arnie rips off a guys arm and beats him with it. Last night, after eating a bunch of Mcdonalds and viewing the beautiful new Blu-Ray of MAC AND ME by SHOUT FACTORY, we hooked up a VCR and Peter took out his Japanese VHS tape. We were wrong. Peter was right. WATCH IT HERE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOuZnmSujt8 I aughed so hard during MAC AND ME, that for a few seconds, I couldn’t…

The best commercial for McDonald’s I’ve seen after Mac Tonight with Doug Jones. The creators of E.T. didn’t even bother suing because it was too embarrassing.

Two acts of fast food product placement and crazy-making alien slapstick punctuated by genuinely the most insane climax in any family movie released before and since. Mac and Me is sort of a litmus test in the sense that it eventually holds a mirror up to the ball of emotion you didn’t know was building up inside you over the course of 50 minutes. When all hell breaks loose…are you shocked? Are you scared? Do you feel pain for Mac?…

Baffling that this film has such a bad reputation, it has to have one of the funniest endings of all time.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 12, Ep. 1 They must be throwing a breakdance benefit to stop an evil land developer from tearing down that McDonalds. First time watching a MST3K from the Netflix revival. There’s so much damn love put into it. It really feels like a timeless, true 1-to-1 interpretation of the original. The miniature design of the theme song and hallway doors sequences are unreal. For the first 20 minutes or so, the quantity and timing of…

Mac and Me is not merely a film — it is a cosmic event, a cinematic supernova detonating in the stratosphere of 1980s pop culture with all the subtlety of a marching band falling down a staircase. This movie doesn’t begin so much as it erupts, launching you headfirst into a world where aliens drink Coca‑Cola like it’s the nectar of the gods and dance in McDonald’s with the unhinged enthusiasm of creatures who have never known shame. From the…

This may not be good but it’s immensely more fun than the bland slop that something like this would be today. 5 McNuggets out of 10

This is some stupid fun and an absolute blast and I refuse to believe people actually hate it. Maybe they were too busy comparing it and not letting it live as it is? ET wishes it had that dance scene.

I almost feel like this deserves a 2. The egregiousness of the product placement, particularly in a kids movie, gives everyone the right to dump on this thing. And yes the practical effects are trash. And yes it’s incredibly derivative. And yes the gimmick character at the center of it is so visually unpleasant I want to hit it with a crowbar. And yes the child acting is brutal more often than not. And yes it only had 30 minutes of real story, and another hour of padding. But Alan Silvestri, man, that guy can write a score.

Me, personally, I find this decent. It’s pretty entertaining and wholesome. And it’s not unwatchable as people says. I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s a shameless rip-off of a classic film E.T. (1982), the alien’s design looks ugly, and some scenes are very bizarre. It’s very Americana and capitalism with its coca-cola placement and a 5 minutes dance at McDonald’s. Very wacky, but not bad!

The shining epitome of a “so bad it’s good” B scifi movie. By which I mean it’s not at all good, but it’s fun to watch with a group that doesn’t want to watch a good movie.

Mac and putting disabled children in dangerous situations. Theres the boy that flies, and the boy that falls and, coincidentally, they’re both named Eric. As a child he yearned for the mines. This is genuinely an awful movie, but it’s so awful that it is one of the best things I have ever laid my eyes upon, which is why I will not be rating it. There was so much product placement in this movie and I loved it so much.

It’s a little silly and dumb, sure, and I’m definitely not going to pretend it’s some hidden gem that’s been unfairly forgotten, but it’s nowhere near as bad as I’d been led to believe. It’s undeniably cheesy, from its shameless product placement to the bizarre E.T. imitation at its center, but there’s a certain goofy charm to the whole thing that made it more entertaining than I expected. The alien makeup is actually pretty fun, the kid-friendly adventure has some…

3 words. What. The. Freak. In 99 mins a kid got shot, and the same kid went down a big hill into water. He survived BOTH TIMES and kept living his Normal life. We got whistling Aliens, guns, and a freaking nuke. (pretty much.) This movie was so bad I can’t even rate it! I need to rate it like a 0/5. In conclusion, I can see how this movie was produced by McDonald’s. No I’m serious. McDonald’s. How can such a big company make something so bad? But no sorry no rating.

Someone in the mid 80’s asked themselves, “what if we made a shitty E.T that had a hint of Ghostbusters and also so much product placement it hurts?” and I have no idea what to make of the result. I mean, obviously it’s a bad movie. The CGI/Effects they do every now and then is absolutely abysmal. Acting is just entirely ignorable with the entire movie having practically little to no plot; but I think it’s at least interesting to…

Maybe the best movie I’ve watched this year if not ever. I enjoyed looking at the Amazon prime trivia about the movie at the end and confirming them wobbly alien ballsack bastards were funded by the satanic duo that is McDonald’s and coca-cola. A really fun watch to laugh at, some classic Conan memes in here too. Thank you Paul Rudd

It’s just one of those “it’s so bad it’s good” kind of movies, and boy, is this one bad. There’s an obnoxious amount of Coca-Cola and McDonald’s product placement, the little aliens look ridiculous and the acting is absolutely awful. But somehow, it’s so bad that it becomes genuinely hilarious. Whether it’s intentionally this ridiculous or not, I honestly couldn’t tell you but most of the time I was laughing purely because of how terrible everything is. It was a…
