You promised me You promised me You promised me You promised me after learning about how Cassavetes created this film after being told by his doctor that he only had 6 months to live makes it an even tougher pill to fully swallow. Love Streams a heart-wrenching masterpiece. Cassavetes and Rowlands both put on, again, incredible performances as two unhinged people. That dream sequence of the stage performance is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s crazy to even imagine Cassavetes directing and starring in this when he had been told he had such a short time to live and yet he still wanted to put such a fascinating piece of art out there for the world to see. I’m happy he got 5 more years of life after this was made. RIP.

so much love for john and everything he did. so much love for gena rowlands and her miniature horses. so much love for the scene where both of them arrive home and talk about what creativity means, even if they’re brother and sister here, it felt like taking a peek into their real life marriage. so much love for the all the truthfulness and affection i’ve felt watching cassavetes films. happy birthday john, love is everything.

“Life is a series of suicides… divorces, promises broken, children smashed” Sometimes I think that cinema peaked 40 years ago with Gena’s zoo, and has been in borrowed time since then, what else can it really achieve when this movie already exists? It is Cassavetes’ most of expansive and inventive movie, in part because he and Rowlands acting against each other is so central to it. He reportedly didn’t want to play the part, but it is hard to imagine it with anyone else, because it is hard to imagine Love Streams without the intimacy they bring to the roles. Even if they don’t share that many scenes together, as a drama it is very predicted in how they move close and drift apart time and again, the editing is shaped so they seem to be continuous together, the same way the emotions behind keep swinging from hopeful to misanthropic in such way they are never opposite options.

“Do you believe that love is a continuous stream? Cassavetes is above all else a cinema of flesh, of an overwhelming need of embracing the material world. Love Streams could’ve been one type of proposition – she loves too much, he withholds everything – but end up been a very different one, less based on easy oppositions: a post-apocalyptic world of feelings whose Adam and Eve just happens to be brother and sister, one less given to carnal thoughts as much a constant emotional need. It is his most beautiful sustained film and along with Chinese Bookie the most imaginative, every cut bringing a total mystery (although the early fatalistic film tend to contracts its world while Love Streams embrace…

Seeing this in a theater was an interesting experience that I’m not sure I’d repeat. I may be too precious with this movie simply because it means so much to me, but it was difficult to hear people laugh through parts that I consider devastating. Perhaps I missed some of the humor watching the movie in intimate settings in the past, but I feel like Cassavetes backs each line with such defined levels of truth that anything that feels awkward or funny hits me with equal parts vulnerability. Don’t get me wrong, I love levity and this film has it in spades, but it simultaneously deeply understands the purpose levity serves in our lives. If I’m truly connecting with Cassavetes…

This may actually be a terrible movie. For the first time I saw the possibility of how people could be perplexed, or completely disengaged by this. More than any other Cassavetes movie too, this thing is enigmatic, bordering nonsensical, and has an overwhelming sincerity masked by performative excess, that leans into its schizophrenic quality (intentionally). It’s honestly barely a movie; there’s no plot, things just sort of happen, it builds up to a wildly obtuse and out of left field third act, and has some really counter-intuitive characterizations/performances/performers, alongside the trademarked half-sentences, constant laughter, shitty editing, and overall amateurish charisma. All these things just make me love it more. This is an artist, knowingly going to die, just laying it…

it was the ending that got me. the main character telling his sister that he loved her and would take care of her and begging her not to go before she disappeared into the rain. except i think that was also john cassavetes telling gena rowlands, six months after a fatal diagnosis, how he couldn’t have done this without her and that the love would always be there, regardless if their films lived on or melted into a jukebox and blurry colors as it poured outside. he said goodbye in the final frame by waving at us. gena maybe never encapsulated her legacy so neatly. like the film, she strode in like a hurricane, told us that love was all…

I really don’t know what to think about this, not a single thought or maybe too many that I can’t really understand, it expose some realities of life that I haven’t seen in other films before. I just know it gave me a terrible fear of being a woman on her 50s something and having nothing but endless love and having nowhere to put it

What I loved most about Love Streams was the story and how naturally everything flows from one moment to the next. The relationship between the two siblings feels incredibly genuine, and the film never feels like it’s forcing their relationship or emotions into a conventional structure. It just lets these characters exist, argue, break down, laugh, and try to understand each other. The way it started, as well. You start with both having different kinds of conflicts and you inmmediately…

First ever john cassavetes film i watched, and wow this was good. You know what i like alot about this movie. It’s not a happy love story that most people would expect and that’s what i love about it. Not all love stories are rainbows and sunshines, most people forget about how love can also be tragic. This movie shows 2 different people with their love life, 2 of which you don’t wanna end up like. But it feels so…

A person has to be sick before they can get well. Gena Rowland’s plans mentally struggling so well. The pain in that first introduction of her. Wow intense. Love is a stream. It’s continuous. It doesn’t stop. I’m almost not crazy now….i just don’t care. That imagination of running them over is Wilde. Me gustó. Cuatro estrellas.

This film gets progressively more batshit as it goes on. It starts to take on a kind of dream logic. (Stream logic?) Gena Rowlands’ glorious hair is a sight to behold. I love her. Every time I watch her in Cassavetes movies, I’m like “this is what it feels like to be a woman.” She just harnesses such vulnerability and yearning and performing for others so well. Bowling in her pantyhose. Also, her character’s Herculean requests of cab drivers and…

Confused with this one Lots to appreciate in it with Cassavetes technical brilliance, surprising artistic choices, tracking shots and all that. The plot was pretty unpredictable throughout and I got sorta lost in the end when all the animals appeared and got even more baffled when the dog turned into that man and Robert started laughing mad silly. Feel like a real idiot for not resonating with it enough but maybe I just need to be older and have kids…

I saw only 15 minutes of this before the similarities with Woman Under the Influence became overbearing. I just cannot stand Gena Rowlands pretending to be “insane” in front of a camera. It makes me cringe so much. Some day in the future, I will have built up enough self-discipline to watch this revolting mess, but it is not today.

I choose to believe that Gena Rowlands actually backflips into the pool. Guess this one concludes all the Cassavetes’ films that i watched and though i can’t say i’m a huge fan of his films i really find his technique in making a film really interesting and profound (performances and themes are a highlight) The man has an eye for portraying raw complex elements in marital and personal crises but it’s just too bad his films don’t do anything for…

Two siblings on a different side of a spectrum, he distince himself, keeps it on a service level, takes the obsorver watcher role, and never gets too close. she gets too obsessive and suffocating. both are immature but she at least tries to become more balanced): while he denies the problem and has a superior complex. All the difficultly of watching A Woman Under the Influence, but without the emotional payoff. The movie as a whole was competently made. The main two actors are good (especially Gena Rowlands). Several individual scenes or subplots were good (for example, Robert’s abandoned son). But it all adds up to kind of a hodgepodge of stuff that just sorta happens. It doesn’t really go anywhere – at one point Sarah looks at her watch, realises the film is almost up,…

I’ve finally gotten on good terms with my very close personal friend john. “Life is a series of suicides, divorces, promises broken, children smashed, whatever.” to love unconditionally and not love at all. to connect with everything and remain attached to nothing. different paths, different forms of longing, all flowing into the same river: estrangement. There is no such thing as a love that flows endlessly like a river. there are only fadeaways.

1984 was worlds away from now. I am trying to imagine myself in 1984 watching this. Imagine letting a drunk man drive your Gremlin and being interested in his well being. I really feel such crazy warm feelings watching this. I agree that love is a stream and that it never really stops, so the only thing you can do is abandon it, if you need to, or put it in your wallet. You can still love someone without being in love with them. I think too that John’s character can only really, at this point, love Gena’s because he knew her when he wasn’t a man yet. It’s that love…

Sarah, you deserved better. I wasn’t sure if Sarah and Robert were siblings or dating at first. It wasn’t until the middle of the film that I realized they were siblings. It’s funny how disappointed Robert looked when Sarah bought and brought home all those animals. At least Sarah had a beautiful dream. “Love is a continuous stream.” “Does it ever stop?” “Maybe. But it always finds somewhere else to flow.”

*Love Streams* is a very well-written and well-directed film. It’s a dense and heavy film. You’ll understand the premise on the first watch, but catching all its nuances might require a few more viewings. It’s rated lower for me because the subject matter isn’t easy to digest, and the overall enjoyment factor is quite low.

I was very excited to see Love Streams because I admire John Cassavetes’, A Woman Under the Influence (1974) and I adore his film, Opening Night. (1977). You gotta love something, anything really. How do two siblings wind up so screwy? I would love to see how they grew up. She pushes so hard for her daughter’s love, and it repels her. this film is extremely sincere in the way it pulls as various emotional threads, carefully examining the need to be loved and to express love – one sibling avoiding it at all costs, the other chasing it constantly – the way they treat people around them mirrors their own beliefs about themselves and their relationships with other people – Sarah trying to teach Robert how to feel the way she does about the world, so she can get some peace “do you believe that love is a continuous stream?”

N2/G3/M2/C2.5/X2.5 RI -1 A film that spends most of its runtime struggling to explain its existence. Artificial characters are pushed through increasingly contrived situations to reiterate the same simple traits until there is no point left to miss. The late surrealism finally gives it some identity and even a few genuinely great scenes, but it arrives almost independently of the preceding mundanity. Otherwise, it often feels like the least interesting conventions of the 80s era distilled into a film of their own.

This is a statement. As Cassavetes’ learned he had 6 months to live, this is what he felt necessary to craft, and thank God, or Cassavetes, for that. You shouldn’t search for meaning in this, it’s not supposed to have any, i believe. It’s sensorial. This could’ve fallen into the opposites trope too easily: a sister who loves too deeply and a brother who doesn’t love anything at all. That’s not what happens. at first i was confused how things would happen, most of the early minutes just live inside the scenes without context, and the film simply follows people through their days, somehow you pick up what’s happening between them without ever being told directly, and that disorientation isn’t a flaw so much as a method, the film refuses exposition because it’s not interested in explaining people, it’s interested in watching them, the same way you’d watch someone in your own life…

This movie never truly pulled me in all the way. I find these erratic movies to be slightly hit or miss, and being such that I never fully got into the dynamics, the conversations, the utter nonsense, I never truly existed with the film. That said there were moments of true craft and sharp dialogue that glimmered of a masterpiece, and for that I thoroughly enjoyed much of the film. Is love a continuous stream? Maybe one day I’ll find out for sure

Gena Rowlands plays such a perfect crazy person and her poofy hairdo is so incredible it makes you wanna jump in like its a swimming pool. Did John Cassavetes binge smoke crack and watch David Lynch movies on repeat, before deciding we must all witness what the true king of sleaze (and his absolutely miserable life) looks like and his redemption as a lowly goat herder? Who the fuck are you? These are the movies that seem absolutely deranged at first, but then bury themselves in your brain bc they show something actually real in an otherwise bleak and ugly world.

Excellent swan song if you consider it as Cassavetes’s last true picture. Found the dream sequence particularly fascinating insofar as sometimes the only means of continuing without closure is to make it up. I’m also biased towards sibling dynamics and all the complexities that entail with it; how only you two are shaped in a certain way and the consequences that develop from that. Both of them being addicts and hedonists to some extent to cope with their failures in…

“O amor é tudo. O amor é tudo, apenas lembre-se disso.” Uma narrativa sobre a afeição que não representa um romance tradicional. Ou talvez represente, contudo não do modo que você prevê.
