i think “Lincoln” is one of spielberg’s late-career triumphs and it is a personal favorite movie of mine but the one thing that takes me out of it is at the very beginning when dane dehaan shows up as a union soldier. he doesn’t belong! he looks too much like he’s seen an iphone. other thoughts: i hoot and holler when tommy lee jones shows up as thaddeus stevens i love the scene where bruce mcgill’s edwin stanton storms out of the telegraph room when lincoln is telling one of his stories. a lot of people, even his allies, thought lincoln was kind of aggravating with his constant frontier stories and dirty jokes. genuinely incredible that spielberg, kushner, daniel day-lewis and sally field were able to craft a 19th century marital argument that feels completely authentic and realistic. lee pace does a great job playing complete pieces of shit.

There’s an easy critique to make of Lincoln. It’s the latest in a long line of popular retellings of the Civil War that puts white men at the center of the narrative, marginalizing the very people who fought and died for the recognition of their own humanity. It’s more pernicious endorsement of the Great Man theory of history and all its attendant, authoritarian implications. It’s an easy critique because it’s essentially correct. If someone condemns Lincoln because they are too distractingly annoyed by this, I completely understand, and there’s really no arguing with that reaction. But I think rejecting Lincoln for this reason is like hating Back to the Future because time travel is impossible. If you have any interest…

I think Lincoln could have worked better as a TV series so it could be shot in front of a live audience.

I am a bit of a history freak. I love films that aim to illuminate and portray a period in history as accurately as they can. Lincoln is a prime example of this and while I fully understand that this film can be experienced as an overlong dull affair, to me it is a historical drama that ticks practically all boxes. Let’s get the obvious out of the way. Daniel Day Lewis’s performance is stellar. The level of dedication he brings to his roles is awe-inspiring and here he does something extraordinary. He gives character and humanity to someone that only exists on paper. There is a certain collective awareness of what kind of man Lincoln was and Day Lewis…

I’ve seen this movie three times. I have TRIED to like it. But goddammit this is one of the most boring films I’ve ever seen in my life. Daniel Day-Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones are the only things holding this movie together.

Forgot that half the shots in this movie have Jeremy Strong in the background silently staring at Daniel Day Lewis in awe

Off the top of my head this movie has: Michael Stuhlbarg, Lee Pace, Walton Goggins, David Strathairn, Bruce McGill, Adam Driver, Jeremy Strong, David Costabile, James Spader, John Hawkes, Tim Blake Nelson, Jared Harris, Jackie Earle Haley, Peter McRobbie, the evil president from 24, Colman Domingo, Hal Holbrook, S, Epatha Merkerson… It’s like watching every great TV character actor our lifetimes come together to abolish slavery. A moving and credible rendering of American history that is also an Obama-era fantasy of “progressive” government.

This one’s about a guy named Lincoln (spelled incorrectly) who talks for two and a half hours, giving wise and/or folksy speeches to an assortment of old-timey white men. It’s exhilarating. Daniel Day Lewis is so good in this role that I somehow can tell that he got the voice and mannerisms spot on, despite the fact that there is no footage or audio of Lincoln to compare it to (and in all the pictures he looks like a monkey…

I watched it after visiting the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, and feeling inspired by the grandeur and reverence of the statue and the Gettysburg speech. Daniel Day Lewis is superb as always. His acting is superb as ever, and I can easily imagine that “this” was indeed the president. Also, the makeup team made an astounding job, Daniel looks almost too similar to the Lincoln I saw in the statue. Yet, the movie tells too brief of a story.…

Decent enough movie about Abe Lincoln. I was like “wow, what a guy that Abe.” Unfortunately there’s a more historically accurate movie about Abe that also came out in 2012.

Oh, Abe !!! Love me some Daniel Day-Lewis and ADORE me some James Spader, so I loved this.

Such a great movie about the greatest American to ever live. I don’t understand how people can think this movie is boring. Just the immense power that he held and he was able to use it correctly without becoming a dictator. I think it’s summed up well at the end when Thaddeus Stevens says it’s the most corrupt power used by the purest man. Just a perfect movie and thank you to Karol for letting me pause the movie a…

I know a lot of people don’t like this film and I understand why. But this is one of my favorite Scripts and performances to film. It just is so smooth and has such fun expertly captures the psychics of every one of their characters. Daniel de Lewis is Incredible.

Daniel-Day Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones were the shining stars of this. Apart for them, this movie was not enjoyable for me. Very long, dark and a lot of information given, in long conversations. I think the story could have been told more poignant and clearer, in both meanings of the word

Ondanks enkele sterke scènes, was dit toch een film waar ik het moeilijk vond om 2u20’ echt gefocust te blijven. Bijzonder leerrijk, dat zeker wel. Een extra halve ster voor James Spader!

I really enjoy the inner workings of politics and the deals that go on. But man this movie was longer than it needed to be.

I wish that there was a gag like in Scary Movie 3 where every time there was a new scene with Lincoln in his iconic hat that it would get increasingly bigger. And by the end of the movie it’s practically going through the fucking ceiling.

I’ve never been a big fan of DDL and I’m still not a big fan of him here, but it’s a pleasant movie. I hate the dramatization and I wish they had tried to be as accurate as possible rather than trying to make it more Hollywood friendly. It makes me wonder what is true, as I admittedly wish it all was. I like everything here and I love the fervor with which people fought to change the nation away…

Extremely good period piece. The portrayal of Lincoln, the sets and environments, the writing and language of the time, the commitment to historical accuracy. Not overly dramatized – there were moments that some artistic freedom was taken, but it was done intentionally and tastefully – e.g. a guy running across the lawn to deliver a message from the Capital to the White House; soldiers tallying votes over telegraph; scenes in private between Abe and Mary Todd Lincoln.

Really enjoyed Daniel Day Lewis’ performance.

Daniel Day Lewis is insane. His voice is forever the template for Lincoln. Always a sucker for films that tell a riveting, true story. The tension is consistently felt, the performances always on display

Seldom is there a movie that will bring scores of old white people to the theater.
