Few Disney films delve so deep into the flawed humanity of their characters, but leave it to a film involving fucking aliens to fix that problem immediately and with a tremendous amount of ease. Lilo and Stitch, directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders (IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW), is a glorious mixture of 50s sci-fi trappings laden within a gentle study of family dysfunction. It’s kinda rare that something this perfect came out of Disney in the early 2000s, but it happened, and it should be recognized more often. Fantastic action set-pieces, an economical narrative, fascinating characters, brilliant one-liners, heartbreaking moments; It has it all and It’s over in 85 minutes. Grab some popcorn and some tissues and enjoy.

My wife and I saw this movie together on a date almost 20 years ago. Tonight, we watched it with our two kids, who cackled with glee when Stitch picked his nose with his tongue. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Can’t believe I’ve never seen this… But it’s magical. Super fun, insanely emotional, and tells such a great story about family, love, forgiveness and finding your own. Stitch is a menace in all the best ways. But it’s Lilo for me… Quite possibly the most bearable and relatable “kid” performance I’ve seen in anything. Had me tearing up. I grew up with Boomer parents and Millennial siblings so this wasn’t in my family’s movie cannon. I realized I’d never seen it in its entirety. It’s cute and sweet but just not my jam. Stitch is the best part of the movie. I could watch alien hi-jinx montages all day. I don’t know maybe I have an ice cold heart but I just wasn’t into it. Not bad by any stretch but with no nostalgia it didn’t hit

The alien shenanigans are only mildly amusing, but this movie has so much heart. Lilo and Stitch themselves are incredibly charming and most of the other characters are great too. This is maybe the most I’ve connected emotionally to a Disney movie. Both when it’s uplifting and when it’s tragic, it really works. The surfing scene is one of the best in all of Disney; pure movie magic.

The character motivations too often don’t make sense. This is more of a kids movie than something for all ages, and it seems like a blatant ploy to sell Stitch toys and apparel, like the Ewoks in Star Wars Return of the Jedi, or Baby Yoda in Mandalorian. It gets the second star because there are a lot of cute moments and the animation looks good.

Never actually watched this which is crazy btw. But yeah what a movie. Absolutely amazing message, some absolute top characters, beautiful setting, animation etc. Stitch was P’ing me off for a bit but he redeemed himself at the end. Lots of jokes, music was phenomenal. This movie manages to be fun, deep, emotional and sensitive with jumping perfectly between the Hawaiian and alien parts. Both lilo and stitch learn together to be part of a family and dealing with trauma. They grow a lot and this movie manages to have a lot deep and heartwarming parts. Besides that the animation is really good and the movie has really fun parts.

I must have been 6 years old. I remember walking out of the theater into the parking lot and thinking about the ugly duckling scene over and over. It was the first time a movie stuck with me like that. My heart ached for stitch. Even at that young age I already felt so different. Stitch taught me that I would find my found family where I would belong – and he was right.
