In the wake of American Sniper, I thought it would be prudent to reaffirm that Eastwood can do neutrality. I passionately consider Letters from Iwo Jima to be one of the best war films of all time; with the refreshing viewpoint and heart-rending sensitivity being the tip of the iceberg. It is intrinsically even-handed, movingly reasserting the notion that the enemies are not the foot-soldiers but the puppets masters who, out of nobility or vanity, expect their beliefs to be willfully encompassed by innocents. All this thought-provoking pathos and profundity is heavily diluted in American Sniper. It’s there, but it is astronomically inferior to Eastwood’s magnum opus of great spirit and egalitarianism. Letters From Iwo Jima is more important now then ever, it seems.

It was better than its companion film, mostly because it lacks the preachy American ethos and much better character studies. The focus is solely on the island, through the preparation of their defence, and their ultimate loss. Decent action, great performances, but the pacing was a little off, dragged in the second half. Clint Eastwood ranked

They were expendable. Cinema and its paradoxes, a movie in which death hangs over everything, but whose ghosts in action are bound to forever endure.

I think the greatest characteristic of Clint Eastwood’s films is that they revive the highly developed “form“ of early Hollywood cinema (say, from the 1940s) without ever relying on nostalgic elements. His talent is his firm conviction that cinema is storytelling as well as his confidence that with any story, however he tells it, he can capture the heart of the audience. As a result, he has continually tackled various types of stories, and never tells the same story twice. Also, despite his avoidance of any superficial novelty, oddly enough, his films look like no other before it. Therefore, his films always feel like something entirely new beyond just the mere level of storytelling. I would say that right now…

Letters from Iwo Jima is instinctively my favourite Clint Eastwood directed film. It’s certainly the most evocative. It improves upon every aspect of Flags of Our Fathers, taking the most profound elements and expanding them, whilst having fewer annoyances to let things down. It lacks subtly and is too melodramatic and expositional to be a perfect film, but Letters from Iwo Jima is a masterful piece of cinema. The film opens with a reminder that this is a film of the dead and the deserted, it instantly imbues a sense of history. The skies are constantly grey and the film quickly becomes a colourless haze. No one wins in war, so it is often only films about those on the…

waited for the right time. Clint’s best of the 21st century. was hoping it would mean the world to me which is why I saved it for so long, but it hit even harder than I expected. have never seen a film shot in colour look so devoid of it. witnessing the ghosts’ stories takes a toll. have no words for how emotional this is really.

one of the great war films precisely because it refuses to reduce its conflict to a couple of cheap action setpieces — the battle for iwo jima was slow, grueling, protracted, and clint knows to spend that time on the human beings instead of the bullets — i think it’s really telling that this is among the few american WW2 pictures that portrays war crimes without narratively justifying them as ‘necessary evils’. every death here is unnecessary, contingent, and lamentable — regardless of nation or ideology, clint wants us to see all shades of the war, both the insanity and dignity.

Haunted caves and the forgotten men who still inhabit them. A slow march of doom that radicalizes the Fuller idea that there’s no heroism even in surviving by just postponing death a while longer. An achievement of place, the island as this large symbolic grave at same time very empty and resonant. The film is spare, minimal, very physical, yet packed with mythmaking particularly when it comes to the idea of defeat (Shigehiko Hasumi once compared Watanabe’s character to a confederate official out of a Ford western). It has two clear modes: one tactile recognizing of approaching death, another larger design when devotion to country is equated with same (and it is worth remembering both Eastwood’s Iwo Jima movies are very much Iraq war movies). It also fulfills Eastwood’s career long desire of making a film that is just ghosts and it does so admirably.

Clint took Spielberg’s money, tricked him and the audience into thinking he was making a Saving Private Ryan-esque No-man-left-behind O-say-can-you-see (literal) flag-waving propaganda piece, used 90% of it and made an anti-propaganda movie that criticizes all those things, and used the remaining 10% to make a personal, sorrowful, deeply moving character study on the Japanese “invaders” whom were simply young men forced to leave their families behind to die for people who believed they were doing what was right; just like us. All in the tender year of 2006. Clint has a bigger set of balls than literally any director alive.

Letters from Iwo Jima begins in a state of solemn reflection. An examination of the brutality once exchanged at this iconic island. The remains of the battle are flipped through sombrely and in no time we are thrust back to their origins — 1945, right in the thick of the coal-black soil. This particular battle has been explored before, but what makes Letters from Iwo Jima distinctive is its perspective and the films affiliation with it. The Japanese soldiers aren’t relative, but absolute. They aren’t hidden in the shadows like most war epics, but brought to light and sympathetically investigated in depth. From the coarse beaches of 1945 to the remains of present day, Letters from Iwo Jima remembers this…

Director Clint Eastwood does the unthinkable here for a Hollywood movie and films the Japanese perspective of the battle of Iwo Jima with an all Japanese cast speaking in Japanese. And it’s all the better for it giving it the authenticity it needs.

Much better than Flags of our Fathers. I still wouldn’t call this a perfect movie, but what this is going for continues to be important. These films are a great example of war movies actually being able to be anti-war movies.

Letters from Iwo Jima فیلمنامهٔ Letters from Iwo Jima برای من نسبت به Flags of Our Fathers بسیار موفقتر است، مخصوصاً در شخصیتپردازی. Flags of Our…

“This is still Japan.”

I finished Flags of Our Fathers, and said, “They say the other one is even better?” It didn’t take long to put in the Blu-Ray. My heart is with Flags. But this, no doubt, is the better movie. A powerful and harrowing experience – I don’t use that word lightly, either. A testament to Clint’s capabilities as a director. I cannot believe I put off these two as long as I did. I loved both of them.

Backlog Roulette 120 There’s a clear reason why this was included in the Clint Eastwood 10-pack and Flags of our Fathers isn’t and it’s because it’s so good you don’t need FooF as a companion film and u can’t say vice versa on that.

Every story has two sides so of course I followed up Flags of Our Fathers with Letters from Iwo Jima. Of the two films, this one was the more brutal for me. Astounded by the contrasts of what type of movie this is to its sibling film. Kept wandering what this movie was building towards, no happy endings, no catharsis, it’s just people in the face of absolute doom, and one man’s determination to not die. I just haven’t seen a war movie that establishes more we are outnumber and out gunned the movie is just literally watching them lose slowly. It’s so sad. Kinda blown away by it.

Surprisingly good. I have a love/hate relationship with Clint Eastwood’s movies—they usually fluctuate wildly in terms of quality and overall sincerity, sometimes being genuine masterpieces and other times being director-for-hire slop. Letters from Iwo Jima, obviously, is one of the former. An earnest—though sometimes schmaltzy—exploration of war and the propaganda that drives it. There’s no shirtless testosterone-fueled macho men running around the battlefield in this one, just skinny conscripts desperately trying to survive. Could be a pretty decent companion piece to Terrence Malick’s Thin Red Line.

Rewatch. For those who didn’t know yet: Japanese soldiers are human beings, too. Apart from that, this could have been a WWI, WWII, German, French or English war movie. I don’t see much that is specifically Japanese here. Very good acting, especially Ken Watanabe, nice camera work and fine battle scenes. The attempt to humanize the “enemy” is probably the film’s biggest strength. On the other side: overlong and at times boring, especially in the first half.

So much of the love for this film is for the ability for Clint Eastwood/the American myth-making machine to have respect and empathy the other side of a war. And that is admirable. But what takes it across the line is Eastwood’s disinterest in engaging American exceptionalism even when it’s there for the taking. It’s the unifying mother’s letter to the dead American soldier that puts into perspective that both sides are losing lives (in this battle) for little purpose…

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) — ★★★★½ (8.5/10) Directed by Clint Eastwood, this stands as one of the most significant war films of the 2000s, and the stronger half of Eastwood’s Iwo Jima diptych. The film recounts the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of Japanese soldiers, framed through the letters they write from a place many of them know will be their grave — a choice that sets it apart, since this is an American production that deliberately…

One of the best anti-war films. Every death feels pointless, unnecessary, and remorseful. A war movie that isn’t centered around action and heroism, but suffering and humanity.

no comments either, it’s just well written and well showed.

Probably one of the best war movies I’ve seen. It’s also probably the only one I’ve seen that truly resembles an anti-war movie, this is character-driven and deeply emotional. TLDR goated Eastwood.

I watched this maybe 20 years ago and hadn’t checked it out since. It was better than I remember. Not Clint’s best directorial effort but it might be in the top 5.

Loved it. I’m a sucker for Clint Eastwood’s poetic POV of history.

Muuuuito doido.

Incredibly refreshing to watch a movie that portrays this period in WW2 from a Japanese POV. It’s a harrowing and deeply human look at the perils of war and the hopelessness of it all. Clint nailed it. Do what is right because it is right.

One of the bleakest and best war film i’ve seen. You don’t make a movie about war, you make a movie about people. Clint gets that. Great character studies that give all the different perspectives in an army. Not Clint’s best pacing, but still a very powerful war film.

Honestly, the fact that the Japanese soldiers actually speak in Japanese and you have to read the subtitles is pretty cool, but I won’t lie that it did hinder my viewing experience (especially since the person in from of me would block the subtitles have the time).

Great movie

The Allied side knew the Battle of Iwo Jima as a ferocious fight to the death by suicidally desperate Imperial Japanese troops who were defending their homeland on this volcanic staging base between the sacred soil of Kyushu and their recent total defeat by the Americans in the Mariana Islands Campaign. By this late point in the War the Americans had some familiarity with the ruthless lengths to which the Nips were willing to go to effect as much collateral…
