Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid may have been the genesis of the modern buddy movie, and films like 48 hrs. and Freebie and the Bean may have added some details to that prototype but one movie, more than any other, set the stage for the modern action and buddy movie. Director Richard Donner’s Lethal Weapon influenced and continues to influence most if not all action cinema that has followed it. It has been emulated, spoofed, borrowed from and straight up ripped off from filmmakers high and low and propelled all involved into instant stardom worldwide. Writer Shane Black, fresh out of UCLA film school, fulfilled every young screenwriters wet dream and sold his buddy-cop script to Joel Silver for…

Actually a perfect action movie.🎬🙌 The loudest soundtrack of all time.🎶‼️ Aggressively blasts the Murtaugh Saxophone🎷& the Riggs guitar🎸 And that ‘Honeymoon Suite’ Title Track. Best song ever written.🤘 Really just a tribute to people who are sooo dramatic and also need therapy ASAP. Everyone should see this movie. It’s so good.👌

God hates me. That’s what it is. Hate him back! It works for me. MERRY CHRISTMAS!😜 It’s basically December now so it’s time to get into the good Xmas movies🎄. Definitely one of my all time faves🎸🎷. It’s perfect and surprisingly life affirming🫂

78 Two forces, diametrically opposed, stumbling through their own baggage while trying not to fuck shit up, whether that be personally or professionally. Full of classic action set-pieces and iconic dialogue – it’s nonetheless the details that reinforce the dramatic strength of the modern buddy-cop template. Maybe I’m just nostalgic around the holidays but the ending had me tearing up.

“you know it’s over, right? i mean the war.” This is still great at exactly what it is, pure adrenaline and classic 80s action spectacle. Campy on the surface, but rooted in real grit and heart. Right from the start, Richard Donner plunges us into a bruised, off-balance atmosphere of surprisingly dark undertones that slowly open into something grounded, almost tender. It’s a story about recognition, about rebuilding trust in each other where trauma has eaten away at it. It feels like a reckoning, pulling what the country pushed to the margins, left bleeding in shame, back into the heart of the community and reviving it with faith. Lethal Weapon feels like the buddy cop genre showing its true engine…

Finally saw Lethal Weapon for the first time! It took me a while to get into it, but after I was, the action is really fun! Mel Gibson’s whole “I’m a crazy cop” thing kind of confused me so once it got past that, I became a lot more interested. Danny Glover gives a deep performance for this kind of action movie. While Mel goes for it a bit too much, Glover anchors the movie, adding the family ties and grounding both characters. The progression in their friendship is shown mostly through subtle changes in his acting, and I love the way he keeps his cool during some crazy situations. We need to start talking about how amazing Richard Donner…

A few quick things on a movie I have been overthinking for 3+ decades. I love that it’s largely Murtaugh’s story. He’s the main character; Riggs is inflicted on him. Roger’s never a mystery to us and Riggs is entirely unpredictable, not just the titular lethal weapon, duh, but truly an unstable danger. It’s hard to remember that this collection of what would become laughable tropes was itself a response to same. It’s like if someone with a DSM-IV and a shitty attitude got a look at Paul Kersey. Throw in Roger & Martin’s (vaguely implied) shared but vastly different experiences of Vietnam and you got yourself a stew. Speaking of Vietnam, the villains are also notably not street punk dope…

really one of the most life-affirming films made in the hollywood system; so much of this is looking at suicide from a complex and empathic standpoint that doesn’t simplify it into a cliché or an ‘issue’, but an aspect that exists right next to hotdog stands, christmas trees, and suburban bliss. gibson’s a miracle-maker, suspending our emotions on a high-wire, but none of his punchlines would land if it wasn’t for glover, whose soft dignity grounds the story amidst the buckets of coked-up sleaze and violence. on the technical side, i dare anyone to find a single fault here; the combo of donner’s punchy framing, golblatt’s flamboyant use of color, stuart baird’s compact cutting and michael kamen’s ice-smooth saxophone score.…

No better example of “let the boys play” than the entire LAPD watching Riggs and Joshua just have an absolute dogfight to end this. What a ripper. People watch this at Christmas I assume? Die Hard family personally but this has to be one right? That Aussie accent wants out bad. That sax hitsss.

Simple fun 90’s noir. Who better to battle the craziness of Mel Gibson than Gary Busey? Iconic, but I would have enjoyed more work with the villain, especially since we got Busey being underutilized. Violence, some nudity, and lots of ADR. Also Mel Gibson is still very Australian here

That last fight scene on the lawn didn’t seem to follow proper police procedures – but I’m no cop, I could be wrong. Some other things be problematic too, but it was still a great 80s action movie So much saxophone 🎷 …oh, and No – Yes, he really is crazy

Gosh, I have seen this film too many times. And I don’t really like it. But I do! The girl from the first scene had such beautiful hair! It was crazy for a cop, Murtaugh, to say “all dressed up and no one to blow.” To a woman. I just couldn’t imagine a cop saying that. The eighties, dude. Murtaugh watching the porno tape with his 80s glasses on and bathrobe looked like a stereotypical pedophile. He looked creepy as…

I never seem to get too old for this film. I wonder if the editing process consisted of asking: How could this scene be improved? More smooth sax? The answer is always yes.

Basically the OG buddy cop film, and its lasting influence is easy to understand. I was surprised to find out my favorite part of the film was the performances. The main duo is consistently entertaining, with a lot of intensity from Gibson and Glover. And Gary Busey is great fun as the mini boss of the film. The action was well done, with the helicopter stunts being particularly impressive. However, some of the hand to hand combat was hard to…

Surprised to find I spent most of this rewatch thinking about Ted Kotcheff’s First Blood, as, like Lethal Weapon, both are first entries in series that would increasingly distance themselves from the poignant tales of their respective protagonists with each subsequent film, to the point that they’d almost become unrecognizable within just a few short years. Now, don’t get it twisted: I don’t begrudge either series for this. Lethal Weapon’s buddy-cop star power made me enjoy each sequel’s shenanigans. That said, much like John Rambo’s tormented plight, Riggs and Murtaugh’s individual struggles give their characters memorable complexity before they inevitably fulfill their superhero-esque destinies.

Okay but 100 cops standing around watching one cop beat the shit out of a guy should never be applauded. Even if he is Gary Busey

Mel Gibson puts Gary Busey in a triangle choke way before MMA became popular. That alone deserves some respect. Also, I don’t care what anyone says—this is definitely a Christmas movie. Honestly, I’d argue it’s more of a Christmas movie than Die Hard. And did anyone else catch that the guy’s name is Peter McCallister? Is that why Kevin’s dad was so damn rich? Maybe Lethal Weapon is secretly part of the Home Alone universe.

Kind of a wild first act. Likable characters. Appropriate self serious. A good combination of tropes and originality. Solid watch.

This movie is a period piece. The saxophone score, the humor, the acting, and the action are all so specific to a certain time that it’s hard not just feel the vibes. This movie is an aesthetic that you like or don’t. The story is serviceable. I also grew up watching the Censored for TV version of this so I was caught off guard a bunch. Wild that I’ve saw the torture scene as a kid though. My mom had a crush on Murtaugh and Riggs.

88/100 “Well, what do you wanna hear, man? Do you wanna hear that sometimes I think about eatin’ a bullet? Huh? Well, I do! I even got a special bullet for the occasion with a hollow point, look! Make sure it blows the back of my goddamned head out and do the job right! Every single day I wake up and I think of a reason not to do it! Every single day! You know why I don’t do it?…

It was already a mid film – a load of guns and not a whole lot of anything else- then the ending was just a load of garbage. Just arrest the guy, why are we sumo wrestling on the front lawn like it’s some epic fight scene. Actual rage bait.

Ça prend du temps à démarrer mais quand ça démarre, ça démarre bien… Hâte de voir les autres, le duo est vraiment super. Par contre Danny Glover est le sosie en noir de Hervé “tu n’es pas le chef” Regnier.

If there is a more badass buddy cop movie I haven’t seen. Riggs and Murtaugh playing off each other and becoming a team is peak. The end is a cascade of better and better action scenes coming to a mind blowing final fight. 10/10 Christmas movie

Good film, but the Mel Gibson homophobia in the film is a little jaring, even for the 80s.

One of the best examples of 1980s action thrillers with a light seasoning of comedy. It’s certainly presented seriously, with saxophone solos connecting scenes. Egregious of pretty much everything: *explosions *henchman fodder *one liners *shootouts *arguments *kidnappings *helicopters *suicide and suicide references *jumping from great heights *Gary Busey smiling *Mel Gibsons crazy eyes *Danny Glover shouting It’s immensely rewatchable and is guaranteed to keep you entertained as the story gallops along at pace. Am I too old for this schtick? Not at all, inject the 80s into my veins through this film.

Pk faire

This is basically the buddy cop action movie bible. We get not one, but two “I’m too old for this shit”’s out of Danny Glover! Shane Black sure does love to set his movies around Christmas time, and he especially loves kicking things off with a beautiful naked lady’s untimely demise. Makes you wonder what the guy’s holidays were like as a child. Gotta revisit all these later in December. Call it a Black Christmas.

LETHAL WEAPON remains primarily important because it’s quite an early instance of men’s mental health awareness in cinema past FIRST BLOOD and is a really tipsy spin on the buddy cop genre, say a hyper-specific feral take on MIAMI VICE. Unlike that series though, Donner plays with the dynamics better in WEAPON by tying Gibson and Glover closer to the hip which makes for a tighter feature-length partner dynamic. For better and worse there’s a reason why this is still the blueprint.

This dude being 50 and the entire movie commenting on how old he looks/is probably triggered so many mid life crises. They all probably went and got mullets cuz Riggs was rocking the hell out of it That dude willingly burning his arm on that lighter at his boss’ command to show loyalty was awesome. So was Riggs moving the target to the back of the range and then shooting a smiley face into it I loved how Murtaugh just let em duke it out and held all the cops back. Riggs put that fucker in the triangle choke crazy badass

How and the hell did they get that helicopter to fly that close to those cars?!? Also, I don’t know how people saw this on top of Mad Max and still were blown away when Mel showed he could be legit crazy.

This movie ending with them crashing a police cruiser into Murtaugh’s house then Rigs having a 1v1 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fight in the rain feels like an unhinged ending. Why doesn’t anyone talk about Lethal Weapon being a Christmas movie? It’s just as much a Christmas movie as Die Hard! Mel Gibson running with his shirt open was definitely the inspiration for Will Smith running with his shirt open in Bad Boys. I grew up watching Rush Hour and Bad Boys, but didn’t see Lethal Weapon until after 30.

Apparently this was part of setting the standard for buddy cop action films. Which I can see to be fair, this was a lot of fun with decent both action and chemistry between the protagonist. The slightly obnoxiously loud saxophone and guitar made me chuckle a few times.

Oh, to be contemplating retirement at 50 years old. This is a fun romp with so much saxophone and guitar riffs that I can’t help but love it! Mel Gibson’s 80s mullet was its own character and I’m convinced it possessed powers beyond human comprehension.
