Interesting that this ran for four installments and neither of these two things happened: an attempt to “get back to the roots” of the franchise by doing a more serious, violent thriller, or a watered-down PG-13 legacy sequel with no profanity or graphic violence. Instead we have this, which is a consistent delivery of goods, including some of the best action in the series — that amazing freeway chase with the mobile home display truck and the final fight with Riggs & Murtaugh vs Jet Li being the two best highlights. There’s also something wholesome about seeing Glover and (even though he’s an asshole) Gibson in these characters after so long, as funny and charismatic as they ever were. Joe Pesci says “talk to the hand” a lot for some reason. Bring on 5!

Coming in 11 years after the first film in its series was released, Richard Donner’s “Lethal Weapon 4” completes the franchise’s evolution from dark-tinted, emotionally vivid action thriller to comedy-imbued buddy-cop spectacle exhibiting potent notes of weight. As entertaining as its previous chapters, Donner’s film offers heat, heart, and personality; and it caps off the series with character and bursts of exhilarating cinematic electricity. Starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as weary law enforcement officers on the trail of Chinese human traffickers, the core story works well and supplies the necessary narrative foundation for large-scale action sequences and compelling plot points. As with the earlier films, however, that core story also supports continuing character-oriented threads and robust thematic beats. The…

A fantastic conclusion to an amazing series. This easily is up their with the first. I felt the charm like I did with the first one in this. Now I’ll be honest as much as I would love to see a Lethal Weapon 5 I just don’t think it needs to be made. I thought they ended this perfectly. LETHAL WEAPON RULES!! Lethal Weapon Ranked

“Are you all friends?”📸 “No. We’re family!”🥰😭 -Joe Pesci’s froggy speech.🐸 -Riggs & Murtaugh having heart to hearts.🫂 -Rene Russo slamming a dude’s arm in a door.🚪 -‘why can’t we be friends’ playing over the photo collage credits.😢🎶 Sure, this movie is a little problematic, Chris Rock can’t act😬, and it’s even goofier than part 3 but I just love it. I should deduct stars but I just can’t do it. It’s a fave.⭐️ These movies are super special to me and this was a fun and heartwarming finale.❤️ I pray somebody stops Mel Gibson from making another sequel. Let it rest.🙏

We’ve hidden approximately two ounces of tension in this sea of shtick and fan service. See if you can find them! Obviously I’m fond enough of these characters that I don’t mind it turning into a sitcom, and the frequent action sequences are sturdy, straightforward Hollywood tradecraft, regardless of the rest they’re as good as this stuff gets. Still, I long for the sleazy, bloodsoaked version of this made in ’88 between the first and second one, Riggs and Murtaugh vs the Snakeheads, lots of post-Vietnam misplaced racist rage. And the dentist’s office scene? No words. They should’ve sent a poet.

Final entry in the Lethal Weapon series. It takes the focus on comedy from the third part and mixes it in the series maxim of being “too old for this shit” and a vaguely preachy story focusing on people smuggling. It’s quite clear that everyone involved knew this would be the last one, so the film also has the job of providing a send off for the central characters. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover once again deliver their tried and tested double act, getting support from a returning Joe Pesci and a sidelined Rene Russo, while Chris Rock turns up to deliver his irritating support act that mainly just provides the narrative with a few jokes. The jokes come thick…

100-word review: Mel Gibson looks so much older without his long hair. 4 is the best Lethal Weapon since the first one with funny continuity jokes (like Riggs’ fondness for dog treats), some of the series’ best action sequences (like that random Iron Man opening, the Fast & Furious car chase, and the cool Jet Li martial arts showdown), and Mel Gibson and Danny Glover formidably continuing their comical, yet weirdly heartfelt chemistry. Richard Donner created something special with this four-parter without a real dud; let’s hope that the more-than-rumoured Gibson-directed fifth-and-final film won’t blemish this legacy. Part of my August 2022 80s & 90s Cop Franchises challenge; 18th out of 18 films.

I had this pet frog, his name was Froggy. He was my best friend in the whole world. I didn’t have a lot of friends. As a matter of fact… okay I had no friends, and uh, I used to kiss the frog, too. I thought maybe, uh, that it would turn into a princess since I was a boy, and uh, it could be my mother. They told me that she left or something, and my father was no bargain, and so just the frog. Froggy was my friend and I really loved him, and I took him everywhere with me, and I was riding on my bike one day and he jumped out of the box, and uh,…

Is it casually problematic AF in todays POV? Absolutely. Is it kinda lazy with no script and coasting on the charms of a well-worn buddy franchise on practical auto-pilot? Definitely. Is it still a fun as hell watch, like conversing with that drunk uncle you only hang with once e very few years at a holiday dinner? You betcha.

The emotional climax of this movie is Joe Pesci giving a passionate monologue about a dead frog followed by a non-legally binding rabbinical wedding.

I like it! I like all of them. I know it’s the weakest in the series but i love Riggs & Murtaugh and that Joe Pesci’s speech at the end is the single best moment of the entire series. It leans heavier towards comedy but also it has a couple of fantastic action setpieces, especially that highway chase sequence.

With their joints creaking almost as much as the script, this instalment of the franchise sees “Riggs” (Mel Gibson) and “Murtaugh” (Danny Glover) start they way they mean to go on – pyrotechnically! This time, it’s the encroaching Triad gangs from China who are involved in some people smuggling and currency forging that could end up facilitating an all-out war in Chinatown between the menacingly stylish “Wah Sing Ku” (Jet Li) and local mobster “Uncle Benny” (Kim Chan). Just to add to the mayhem, IAD detective “Lorna” (Rene Russo) is about to have a baby (with “Riggs”); his partner is soon to be a grandfather courtesy of his daughter and another fellow cop, “Butters” (Chris Rock) and then there is the wacky “Leo” (Joe Pesci) whose words of wisdom and frenetic techniques have to be heard/seen to be believed. “Murtaugh” takes pity on the recently arrived “Hong” family and sufficiently narks the Triad so they invade and set fire to his home. He and “Riggs” only just manage to save the family and now the battle lines are drawn. Chris Rock and Joe Pesci just annoyed me from start to finish, but there is compensating chemistry from Gibson and Glover who know each other inside out by now and this features one of the most entertaining car chases cinema has ever produced. I hope the city had a great deal of insurance! It’s quickly paced and the writing, though heavily laden with unnecessary expletives, does deliver some pithy one liners, especially for Gibson, as it heads towards it’s lively denouement with bullets and fists flying all over the place as yet more concrete crumbles. It’s a formula that has worked well until now, pitching two charismatic actors into frying pan and fire environments with little jeopardy but enough humour. Perhaps that emphasis ought not be on enough now, and they should all retire to Palm Springs, rear frogs and leave us to recall this duo in their heyday?
