thirteen year old natalie portman accomplished more with this film than i will with my entire life EDIT: so i got creepy vibes throughout this film and was really uncomfortable with the sexualisation of mathilda. anyway, i just found out that there was a sex scene in the original cut and that the relationship between leon and mathilda was loosely based off of a real relationship that luc besson had which makes me feel sick for putting that aside so that i could enjoy the film. whilst i enjoyed the acting and cinematography immensely this is not something that i can overlook so i’m not quite sure what to rate this. i’ve also found out that the dress up scene and the conversation about losing her virginity were removed from the american version, which makes sense as to why most people don’t get the same vibe as people who have seen the international version.

But what always starts to gnaw on me every time I try this again is all the corny affectation: Leon’s thing for milk, his gawk-eyed awe at Gene Kelly (calm down, I love SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN too, but it’s cheap shorthand here) or Danny Aiello’s cardboard goombah, or the domestic montage set to Bjork. Comparisons to something like Melville don’t hold up; none of these characters has any actual inner life. A good reason to love plants is they’re always happy. Leon and Mathilda will remain as an iconic duo in my mind. An adult-minded child and a child-minded adult. The main plot-line and the point of the story is so sensitive that, without being hidden behind action and entertainment, it would have been quite a deal to watch. Being able to give it away only enough to make the viewer feel but not see is some “Lolita” level cinematic manipulation. I enjoyed the harmony of weirdness and sympathy engraved in it. Natalie dominated the movie even at the age of 13.

Definitely an interesting watch. Love the stylistic camerawork and the acting (particularly from an especially unnerving Gary Oldman). The relationship between the main characters is a complex and interesting dynamic for sure, 2 people who are detached in different ways finding common ground (that’s all I’ll say about that). Overall, It’s about 7.5/10 for me. Enjoyable, complex and thought provoking watch that isn’t without it’s oddities.

Im well aware of the criticism directed at this movie and the relationship between Léon and Mathilda, in particular, is hard to watch today. Much of it is highly questionable, and i dont want to gloss over that. Still, I really like this movie. The atmosphere, the music, Jean Reno, and Gary Oldman are just incredible. I can’t believe I haven’t actually watched this movie before I don’t know why this slipped my radar but boy is it so Robbie core 1990s also Natalie Portman might be up there for greatest child performance of all time with Holly Seinfeld from true grit. What an unbelievable movie it would be higher on my ratings, but as much as I love an unhinged Gary Oldman this performance just kept making me laugh. It’s just turned a little too high for the movie it’s in.

I can’t believe how long of a way Natalie Portman has gone since her debut in this movie. She and Jean Reno are amazing and have a great and touching father-bond dynamic. Gary Oldman also really steals the show as the villain Norman Stansfield. The action is also pretty cool, the story is gripping and engaging, it’s just a really great and compelling action movie with a great revenge storyline. This is definitely worth your time. I wish I’d liked this movie more than I did, especially because I had very high hopes. The one thing is is the character designed lacked a bit of depth I think it works very well for Leon and his character to be a bit more bland but Matildas character felt a little forced and boring. Obviously, Natalie Portman was very young so I do think that she did well for her age, I can’t judge too much for that, but their relationship didn’t feel very natural.

Lo que me tardé en ver esta gran película no tiene sentido. Recuerdo hace muchos años ver una escena en la tele y engancharme,pero no le tenía prácticamente mucho más de idea porque fue hace bastante tiempo. Que decir de esta película que no se haya dicho igual,Gary Oldman imponente, Natalie Portman ya desde muy pequeña demostrando lo talentosa que es. Con secuencias cómicas que funcionan de alivio para lo seria que es la película,como también escenas dramáticas que me mantuvieron al borde del asiento. “Shape of my heart” se convirtió en una de mis canciones favoritas después de ese maravilloso final.

I thought their relationship would be like a lost dad and daughter, but apparently it’s not T—-T Why would the writer and director decided that Matilda loves him and doing that much to him! I mean ok i could see girl who doesn’t have enough love and effort from their parents do the same irl, but this is too heartbreaking!
