I love the old-school, stylishly made, tonally bleak and ruthless British gangster economy/hierarchy thrillers (you know, the kind that Michael Caine and Bob Hoskins used to do back in the day) so much that not even Matthew Vaughn can fuck it up for me. Don’t know why he thought his bad taste for needle drops and “clever” humor (which thankfully only briefly pop up here) was what he needed to lean into, instead of Daniel Craig brooding about the ugly job of killing. This is why you never got a shot at a Bond film, mate.

Matthew Vaughn’s LAYER CAKE was just the most expensive audition tape for Daniel Craig to pitch himself as James Bond. Also it was such a fun, quotable and stylish gangster flick.

Directed well by Matthew Vaughn, some great actors and daniel craig is very good here, but the plot is very confusing and I found as it went on very dull and poorly paced.

Recommended on my Make me watch your favourite list. Matthew Vaughn has a superb track record as far as I’m concerned. And with Layer Cake he has done something quite extraordinary. He has made a gangster movie I enjoyed a lot. And that just doesn’t happen very often. Guy Ritchie headed the renaissance of the British gangster film with Lock, Stock and two smoking barrels. He gave the genre a face and that’s it. While that style was interesting in the beginning, it was just that, there was not much else to it. Copied in many other films (most often in Richie’s own), to me it quickly became repetitive and boring. My mistake, which turned out to be a blessing…

Mostly stupid but carried off with enough style. So, a Matthew Vaughn picture. Killer cast helps immensely, nice use of Duran Duran.

The best Guy Ritchie film Guy Ritchie never made. It offers thought provoking themes of power, greed and working your way up in the world within the context of the world of drugs and crime that Ritchie often treats like a playground. The title is a reference to the hierarchy of the criminal world, which has layers upon layers of complexity and there is always someone bigger than you waiting to swoop in and the what’s yours. It also helps frame the plot which is a dense layer cake of its own, consisting of many disparate narrative threads that the film must juggle and then tie together. Though cleverly plotted, acted, directed, and written, the best that can be said…

stylish and well paced, i seriously could see why they swooped daniel craig up to be bond after his performance in this one

Its great seeing Craig play Bond before he got Bond but as much as i did like this its got to be one of the dumbest endings ever.

Daniel Craig is my baby and his eyes could solve any world issue.

Solider Gangster-Krimi.

This was decent! A little style over substance but i was into it more than i wasnt. TWO harry potter alumni. Some of the music and editing choices were a little eye rolly.

Something about like an oldish British movie that just fucking slaps. Wouldn’t be shocked if this is where they got the idea for Daniel Craig to be James Bond as well.

“Do you know where I live?” “No.” “Well, fuck off then” Clearly not a film I’d put on for a family get together. But it was worthy of a watch, nothing fantastic nothing to crap either, showing a very young Tom Hardy but barely seen much through the film. Daniel Craig looking how he does in 2004 to what he does now, nothing changed

Really didn’t know Daniel Craig was such an excellent actor. Really close to something super incredible but it didn’t quite reach that mark for me!

The movie that got Daniel Craig the Bond role, he’s so cool in this one and the music is great

Mulling over a 3.5 or a 4 but man, proper gem this. Nothing like a good British gangster flick from the late 90s and 2000s, just a lot of fun really. Lacked a little bit of depth in some parts, personally would’ve liked XXXX’s inner monologue to have been used throughout the film a little, Tom Hardy was suuper under utilised and I dunno, I felt like XXXX was dumbed down in parts but still, overall a pleasant surprise. So…

I think it should be custom for every Bond frontrunner of the future to make their own twisty, gritty, partly-tedious-partly-hilarious British crime thriller as an audition tape to get the role.

K
This movie has the style and heart that should’ve been in the shitty Bond sequels
-
B
Always thought it was a bit overrated tbh.
-
C
I really struggle to describe this movie, It’s a bit like if Guy Richie was exponentially more clean and polished. Great characters, iconic scenes and dialogue that sticks in your head and really well shot. Just a very good British crime movie.
-
M
I need to rewatch this

My name… if you knew that you’d be as clever as me. Hahahahah that ending bro. I love films that aren’t afraid to end with a bang. I also LOVE how we never know his name as he’s known as XXXX The novel this film is based on is already in my basket on Amazon prime haha but yeah, it’s nice to see how the author wrote the screenplay. I only know Daniel Craig for his 007 films so it’s nice to see him outside of that, even tho he practically is playing bond in this film 😂

This was a super intense crime thriller with a 10/10 soundtrack. Makes sense why this film landed Daniel Craig the Bond role.

I need to watch this more than once because I couldn’t keep up with the whole thing. And Ben Hardy barely had any screen time.

The movie Guy Ritchie wishes he could make; it’s just a shame that Matthew Vaughn didn’t really keep on this track with his subsequent work. Solid soundtrack and the performance that landed Daniel Craig as James Bond. Adding a half star since they’re eating layer cake in the final scene.

I can see why this film is the reason why Daniel Craig for the 007 role. He is so suave and they put him in some really good outfits.

real ones know this is how we discovered Daniel Craig was going to be an unreal James Bond despite those fuck ass takes insulting him. this is an underrated gangster classic… and quite possibly the most British film of all time?

Somehow they manage several Ocean’s Eleven style twists. There’s layers to this for sure. Soundtrack is phenomenal as well.

You’re gonna watch this movie and be reminded of Guy Ritchie. Just stunning. Would I watch it again? YOU BET. THE CAST!!!!! If you like The Gentleman, and gang/mafia stories this one is one of those classics that’s just english thriller stupidity gang war mayhem to life. Loved it!

Daniel Craig should play more roles like this he suits them very well. The plot and cinematography were lovely the whole way through but the cast carried the movie a little other than that it’s just a standard very well movie on drug trafficking with a couple of good plot twists, a slightly more obscure plot and an interesting ending.
-
C
amazing sound track – particularly intro and outro

A very fun simple movie, nothing groundbreaking but just fun and engaging. I also want all of XXXX’s outfits from this movie.

What a film Daniel Craig breakthrough film great storyline so many twists and turns with classic English gangster characters and a nice underlying romance and a huge plot twist ending that was a cliffhanger that still somehow felt like a satisfying ending
-
I
Just an episode of Eastenders on acid, yet somehow drab and poorly paced at the same time God I wish Eastenders had Daniel Craig in it though
-

How anyone can not love this film is beyond me. Literally the reason he was casted as James Bond what a film

Tries to be a sophisticated version of a Guy Ritchie movie and it shows. It’s less contrived and has ambition to try something different with a well worn genre but still has the same convoluted plot without the entertainment value of the likes of Lock Stock and Snatch. Found the plot too hard to get invested in and there wasn’t the same shock value of those movies to reel me back in. Daniel Craig’s performance is solid and absolutely justified…

one of the best drug crime movies I’ve seen. Just works so well and is carried so well by the plot, characters and lastly the score / soundtrack. A big fan of this one; even on repeated revisits it stands the test of time as an all time favourite. Incomparable to the likes of Scarface but undeniably one of the best of its kind – especially in Rhyming Slang Guy Ritchie esque type movies.

Ohw wait Daniel Craig had a life before 007. A great movie and the title says a lot about the movie it is a Layer Cake. Good side note: I’ve eaten a layer cake while watching this movie 🙂

The casting director for Bond saw this movie and knew Daniel Craig was 007 and you can’t convince me otherwise. I’ve also been in love with Sienna ever since. Fantastic movie.

I think I’ve stumbled upon Daniel Craig’s casting tape for James Bond. Curious about the sequel that’s currently in the making!

Movie number 87 of the year. Layer Cake Layer Cake directed by Matthew Vaughan in his directorial debut. Layer Cake to me was just ok, I can definitely see why Daniel Craig got the role of James Bond, Dumbledore was a gangster and the actor who says that Dumbledore got some style was awesome when he beat the shit of was that guy.

Layer Cake is a movie that talks about the mind game of human, society, and law. This movie is the embodiment of societal problems, psychological game, and sociology phenomenon which I don’t quite understand. Slow pace, especially at the first. I was thinking to quit watching this movie, but I decided to continue until the end, however the near end sequence brought me some tense feeling.

Twenty plus years on, this still holds up as one of the best Daniel Craig performances ever, a slick crime thriller that’s dark, funny, and clever as hell. J.J. Connolly’s adaptation of his own novel moves like fucking lightning, and good god does the visual style of this still work so well. It’s also just so wild to see a young Ben Whishaw annoy the hell out of Daniel Craig since they’d later be pitted against each other in Craig’s last three Bond films. Just top to bottom a delightful film to resist, and one of my favorites from the 2000s.
