Last Tango in Paris, the infamous psychosexual drama from Bernardo Bertolucci, upset conservatives in 1972 when it came out but is tame by today’s standards. Marlon Brando rents a small apartment and begins an anonymous affair with a much younger Parisian woman (Maria Schneider). His wife’s recent suicide has led him to conclude his marriage was a sham built on falsehoods. Determined to separate sex from intimacy (or truth from illusion), Brando insists on total anonymity, which intensifies their liaison and allows them to harbour an idealised notion of one another. Tango includes two principle sex scenes that are shocking only in terms of Brando’s outward aggression toward Schneider (the camera pays much attention to her smooth legs, lolling breasts…

“Bertolucci was inspired by his own sex dreams” “the sodomy scene was not in the script and was Brando’s idea” “Schneider was 19 at the time” “Bertolucci said about Schneider ‘the girl wasn’t mature enough to understand what was going on”………… this is quite a Mess of a movie. and it’s boring too…. what’s with the seventies and perverts putting their odious fantasies on film and all that shit being perceived as Art

Not only is it the absolute slowest movie ever made. But it also tells us that making a women feel raped is okay as long as it’s for an artistic purpose. Fuck Bertolucci. Fuck Brando. And fuck butter.

all of these “sexy, erotic, scandalous sex scenes” even if we leave out everything to do with the butter scene were uh… not shown to be consensual. that was 130 minutes of eroticized rape. pardon me if I go puke I hated that

Film Genre Challenge for February: Erotica #2 I really cannot take this film seriously. Bernardo Bertolucci created this film specifically for his masturbatory sexual fantasies alone. In order to achieve this, he exploited, abused, and traumatized a 19-year-old actress just to satisfy his selfish sexual needs. I still could not forgive him (as well as Marlon Brando) on how they treated Maria Schneider during the filming on that one particular scene. You know what, I’m actually kinda mixed when it comes to the topic of seperating the art from the artist, but hell, not this time. Schneider herself recounted feelings of sexual humiliation during the making of this film and you can tell that she was obviously traumatized by it.…

Maria Schneider has come out and said she was in real life sexually assaulted on film for this. That voids any artistic merit that might possibly be gleaned from this movie.

Graphic and uncompromising Bertolucci’s masterpiece, not for the faint of heart or easily offended. Marvelous acting and direction make of this an exquisite piece of art to enjoy several times. Lust, passion, intoxicating existentialism and experimental filmmaking is today’s strong dish, accompanied by a forbidden, Platonic steamy affair. 98/100

Maria Schneider: “I should have called my agent or had my lawyer come to the set because you can’t force someone to do something that isn’t in the script, but at the time, I didn’t know that. Marlon said to me: ‘Maria, don’t worry, it’s just a movie,’ but during the scene, even though what Marlon was doing wasn’t real, I was crying real tears. I felt humiliated and to be honest, I felt a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci. After the scene, Marlon didn’t console me or apologise. Thankfully, there was just one take.” I believe this quote alone nullifies quite a bit of the artistic value that might be derived from this film and therefore I feel I cannot give it any rating whatsoever.

Brando should have got an Oscar for this. An interesting study of human behaviour. Well made, disturbing at times but an important film

I’m speechless, I have the knowledge of the controversies surrounding this film which makes it harder to have a correct opinion about the same. Nevertheless, I shall admit I liked the film, I like how it ended. There was no better way it could have ended. Paul(Marlon) deserved that fate and he was rightfully condemned for the same. No wonder the dark desire for toxicity romanticized in the name of love is rooted deep within the industry long before the viewers could even contribute to glorify!

Sure the performances are great, but aside from controversy and that one great scene of Brando talking to his dead wife, what else is there here? A pretty unfeeling and at times nauseating film.

The cut to Brando’s weeping face is maybe the best moment of his career. His most raw performance. Like all Bertolucci films this is as beautifully designed as it is shot. A very ugly, complicated film for obvious reasons but a very good one at that.

Rewatching this after seeing it when I was like 16 feels completely different. Back then I mostly saw the sex and scandal, but now the loneliness, grief, and self-destruction hit a bit harder. Brando’s performance feels just as magnetic. Still a grimy, uncomfortable movie, but I understand much better why it lingers this time around.

WHAT. A. MOVIE. That was my first thought as soon as Last Tango in Paris rolled credits. I can say this. I’ve never in my life seen a movie like this before. I have a lot to say, and yet so much I don’t know how or what to put in words, upon finishing the movie. THE GOOD: 1.) Maria Schneider is fantastic in this film.
