The fourth entry in George Romero’s epic “Dead” series is a familiar mix of social commentary and gory zombie mayhem. This one takes place some time after Day of the Dead in a world where order has started to emerge from chaos. The rich live in a luxury apartment, surrounding slums with the zombie threat ever present outside of the city. The social commentary is more overt than ever, with the whole theme of the film being a barely disguised metaphor for how the rich take advantage of the poor. The post apocalyptic setting is really well done. The whole scene is very well realised and quite realistic – this is probably how things would turn out if there was…

“They’re pretending to be alive …” “Isn’t that what we’re doing? Pretending to be alive?” Years after the Zombie Apocalypse began, civilisation in the United States has broken down, except for a series of protected city-states. One such refuge is ruled by Paul Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) and its citizens are strictly divided, with the rich living in luxury, and everyone else in poverty. When Kaufman’s heavily armed supply truck is stolen, he employs its builder, Riley Denbo (Simon Baker) to retrieve it. Meanwhile, some zombies begin to show signs of intelligence … I watched the Director’s Cut Land of the Dead (also known as George A. Apart from it being a bit overindulgent with the CGI this is really a great continuation of Romero’s Dead series. It has great make-up effects, tense action scenes and fun cameos (Michelle pointed them all out to me). Plus it kind of plays out as commentary on having society divided by class. A very entertaining movie and a fun watch party.

This is a lot better than the Dawn of the Dead remake that came out right around the same time but it’s a lot worse than, like, going on a roller coaster. Not my fairest review, I can admit that.

Before we get too far down the line, I just need to share that as an artist, George A. Romero will forever have my heart. While his original Dead trilogy is as close to hallowed horror grounds as there are, if anyone is allowed to expand upon the ideas and themes presented in that masterpiece of a film run, god dammit it should be him! And while his fourth series entry, Land of the Dead, feels more in line with the 2000’s zombie-revival than it does with Night, Dawn, or Day of the Dead, it’s a tidy, serviceable, and absolutely worthwhile entry into Dead Canon that offers loads of undead imagery to revel in. 20 years on from the bleak,…

Hooptober 4.0 – 2017 – Film #30 Stalin, Eisenstein and Romero are seated in a drawing room on plush leather armchairs. They are enjoying cognac around the hearth of an open fire. They make small talk about the hoof and mouth disease epidemic in California, the Olympics in Paris and how absurd and profound Dada truly is. Stalin narrows the conversation down to business, “Mr. Romero, I am very pleased to have you join our film program. It is my belief that film will play an integral role in celebrating the sacrifices and successes of the proletarian revolution. It will also continue to be an important instrument in the education of the people, to guide them on the path towards…

Unbelievable that there was still so much to get out of this subgenre. Still, that went way too far for me. Thinking, tactical zombies. The “undead” can also shoot, defend themselves, act strategically and walk under water.. That wasn’t for me.

Holds up very well… kinda seems to get better and more relevant every time I watch it too. Contains many Romero-isms utilized well, but I only wish Big Daddy was actually Bub but I guess beggars can’t be choosers. Interesting foreshadowing of occupy movements as well as Dennis Hopper as power drunk rich blowhard idiot obsessed with his tower of shit.

Can’t say I loved how Romero late style + aughts sheen + (occasional) CG splatter all interacted with each other and gave this an uncanny visual flatness I associate more with Robert Rodriguez or a SyFy movie; televisual accusations not really helped by the fact that the lead of this is The Mentalist himself dripped out in H&M mannequin costumes. But on the other hand it is undeniably fun to see the last gasp of Romero being given legit studio resources to do something like this, and there’s enough of pure him in here to forgive the flaws. The blatant and ridiculous Bush era satire for example is more endearingly dated (Dennis Hopper’s “we don’t negotiate with terrorists” still hits),…

Like the Star Wars franchise, the legendary original trilogy of the Living Dead was followed up many years later by the same creative talents that gave it birth. However you feel about Star Wars’ return with Episodes I thru III, it’s pretty much unanimous that Romero’s second trilogy of the dead is a step down. None of them are bad films but the second trilogy pales by comparison. Land of The Dead is the first and by far the best of the 2000s trilogy. Years have passed in Romero’s dead world, zombies now have leaders, can use tools and communicate between one another. The living are hunkered down in a heavily fortified peninsula ruled by Dennis Hopper. There’s an upstairs/downstairs…

a good zombie movie where nothing is boring, pure action from start to finish. a truck fully equipped with fireworks, guns, and rockets named dead reckoning is sick. the big zombie is a huge headache, terrorizing the whole town throughout the whole movie. fun fact: 50,000 cars in samoa get stolen… every single of them.

If you get bit by a slow walking zombie with its head hanging on by a thread, that’s just natural selection 😂. C-tier zombie movie. Cliche as they come.

Took a shot every time there was a surprise zombie around a corner or behind a wall. Passed out somewhere around when a zombie behind a wall jump scared another zombie. There’s also be subtext in here about capitalism or something but I was too blitzed to notice.

I would like to be in an apocalyptic polycule with Simon Baker and Asia Argento. Loved the zombie clowns & Tom Savini cameo. George A. Romero best to ever do it.

That Tom Savini cameo was egregious. Love Big Daddy, the zombies are more interesting with actual backstories, and decent political commentary. But overall this is kinda meh. I cared way more about the zombies than the people, but alas, we spent a lot of time with the people.

My views on this have changed so much over the years. I used to be a hater but y’know what, the practical effects look really fucking good, it continues to build on the narrative of the ogs, Dennis Hopper and Phil Fondacaro are awesome. I’m finally accepting that this is actually a perfect continuation of the OG trilogy

It has its flaws. Ok, it has many flaws. But it’s a really endearing B-movie, and every time I watch it, I like it a little bit more.

How the zombies are in this universe is how I expect zombies to work. There’s always evolution, it’s not a case of when you turn you stay brain dead. Zombies learn too

Cast is stacked for a terrible film – it’s great to watch now for a laugh. It feels like every 2000s action movie with some zombies tossed in to it. The over the top weapons make this film fun!

I really wanted to like this more than I did. Was this straight to video? Was it a TV movie? I can’t think of any other reason to explain the aspect ratio and the bad CGI. There were some really good practical effects and makeup, though. And no one sucked!

Since my shift died down, I figured I would rewatch the unrated version of ‘Land of the Dead’ since I’ve been in a zombie mood lately. On this viewing, everything clicked and I bumped my rating from 4.5 to 5 stars. It’s a bloody brilliant allegory for classism in the good old U. S. of A. It’s the clearest of George’s ‘Of the Dead’ films that says we’re all politically and socially the zombies, and that if we all unite,…

Uh oh..the zombies are evolving. I had a lot of fun with Land of the dead. The Charlie character is great. I love Asia Argento in this role. She looks amazing as ever and kicks a ton of butt. Greg Nicotero and Howard Berger did great with the makeup and special effects. The score fits nicely with the film. Dennis hopper is a great villain. There is an incredible balance of action and drama with good character development. Land of…

The thing George Romero truly understood, the thing which many of his successors have failed to, is that what makes zombies scary is that there’s a fuckton of them, and once they inevitably corner you they will eat your brains. That’s all you really need at the core. Where most Zombie movies now try to be a cheeseburger, this is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (where 2005 sensibilities are the jelly (zombies are the peanut butter (I guess John Leguizamo is the bread))) and that’s ok!

Lleoncrummel 8 月 20, 2026
Doesn’t have the emotional impact or mastery of the previous films in the series. Still, a few indelible images elevate it (zombie nails scraping to the bone against a tank, a very ps2 fps flashlight shot revealing zombies eating in a pitch black room). You can tell after flubbing some of the action in Day of the Dead he wanted to show off his chops and the result is a lot of fun. The way he modernizes the satire for 2005 is great. Dennis Hopper as a Bush figure. Class divide with zombies epitomizing a worker uprising (led by a gas station mechanic). John Leguizamo rules.

I’ve been replaying deadrising and it put me in the mood for more 2000s zombie stuff. Both of them are so in response to 9/11. I’ve never been huge on this movie but i think its old enough now that im starting to find it endearing.

– “It’s like they’re pretending to be alive.” – “Isn’t that what we’re doing, pretending to be alive?” “What was built to keep people safe is gonna trap them inside.” “It’s just like a video game.” I’m pretty tired of sounding like a pissed off teenager and I haven’t seen a zombie film in a minute so I landed on this today Few things are worse than smart ass zombies who start thinking for themselves but at least they were…

Serviceable zombie flick with decent filmmaking. Has a few interesting bits and I’m down for the communist zombie uprising. Where it didn’t work as well for me was with the human protagonists. Carving out my exception for Dennis Hopper there. Most everyone seemed pretty shallow or generic, like I’ve seen these same characters a few dozen times before. I was more invested in the zombies. Maybe that was the authorial intent?

This is such a strange movie lol. You’ve got zombies trying to live like humans by learning their behavior, while the humans are just trying to survive and still find entertainment in watching zombies get slaughtered. Meanwhile the elites are sitting comfortably behind their walls, using their money to stay put like always. Like people are still living and nothing really changes, even after the apocalypse.

Incredibly unfortunate. I don’t really know what happened. It seems like the world building and need to show the world more of the progression of the infection that George A. Romero Zombie Universe had gone through got in the way of the story and having a proper thematic backbone. Now don’t get me wrong it still has themes and some really neat concepts, great performances here and there. It just does not hit correctly. Still just watch it once, its aight

This is fine. Charlie is the only likable character. Dead Reckoning (no relation) is an awesome war machine. For a movie about the Haves vs the Have Nots, they don’t spend enough time with the Haves for us to care.

I did it! I finally watched all of Romero’s Of The Dead movies! This one is a lot more blunt about what it’s trying to say. And as always. Humans are the actual evil. Not the zombies. Definitely a fun watch.

easily the worst Of The Dead movie but still pretty fun. John Leguizamo is awesome as usual but Simon Baker is giving absolutely nothing here. All of the CG effects kinda suck in a way that makes you wonder why we stopped doing practical effects in favor of it. But people DO be monetizing that rot!!!!

Has good ideas but doesn’t do anything with them. Focuses on the action instead of giving us characters – while it’s certainly watchable it’s hard not to be disappointed given what we know Romero is capable of.
