A pretty great film that’s a bit ruined for me now after reading up on how poorly Dustin Hoffman treated Meryl Streep on set. “Dustin Hoffman treated Meryl Streep horribly on set. Aside from hitting her and the infamous wine glass scene, he reportedly whispered John Cazale’s name to her in order to get a reaction from her. Cazale, Streep’s lover, had died in 1978 of cancer and Streep was still recovering at the time of filming.” Yeah, fuck “method” actors. How much is great art worth if it has to come out of you treating everyone around you like a total asshole?

not a child of divorce but i deeply sympathize with those who are. no child should ever go through having to live in two diff places now and forever carrying the knowledge (at such a young age) that his parents are separated and probably never going to remarry. the child may grow to think that this family dynamic is the only version of family he’ll ever know. this pains me so much that i cried during the trial scenes/custody battle in court till the end of the movie (im also on my period so imagine my emotions)

Kramer vs Kramer is both a movie very much of its time, and also has some themes that are timeless. When reading the quick description on the DVD box, it says something to the effect of “Wife leaves her husband and child, comes back at some far later date and sues for custody”, at which point the audience member would be hard pressed to see how a mother could possibly even win such a lawsuit, but the movie does actually…

She’s so real. Fuck you and fuck them kids. Movies from the 70s are perfect Sunday watches Damn this got ugly real quick. I can’t believe this film made me feel bad for a man No but seriously this was so human and heartbreaking. I love how it wasn’t black and white in portraying any of them, just different perspectives. No one is a saint. I didn’t expect I’d love this as much as I did. Kuya’actwa shame. 70s acting is just so different

-
J
Surprisingly liked it. And why is the defence lawyer on a John Wayne level of toughness. + Great story. Really revolutionary in the sense it was quite balanced in how divorce is presented. It’s not one person obviously at fault, but two, fairly normal people going through it. + excellent acting. Hoffman and Streep, you can really expect nothing but the best. + Short and sweet length. No filler or needless dialogue. + Convincing courtroom scenes. Mr Kramer’s defence attorney…

Billy deserves better. Performance by Dustin Hoffman is great. If I had to choose one word to describe the film it would be responsibility, it’s all about responsibility and irresponsibility.

This movies cinematography and editing, somehow turns the dull interior of new york office buildings into a commentary on relationships. The kids acting is also insane. Dustin Hoffman running. Working in family law must be a tough business.

Dustin Hoffman v.

Such a perfect divorce story. Meryl and Dustin hoffman are perfection. Probably some of the most honest and real acting i’ve seen. Every line was delivered so well and the writing was even better. It’s like a softer version of Marriage Story but so much more moving.

Neither of the characters is likeable, but the story is still fun and engaging. A father used ot having a stay-at-home wife who he emotionally neglected is pushed into single fatherhood to learn both the difficulties his wife faced and his own ignorance about domestic labour. The wife is outright infuriating, but women like that do exist, who run from responsibility and leave chaos behind them. Great acting, great story, really feel good parenthood.

I love Dustin Hoffman, but this one really broke my heart. You can see the emotional weight Joanna’s absence leaves on both Ted and Billy, and watching Ted slowly become the father his son needs was probably my favorite part of the movie. Their relationship feels so genuine that even the smallest moments between them got to me. Ted was incredible, especially because you can actually see him changing as a person without the movie constantly needing to tell you…

Basically the guy learns how to be a dad, the mum learns how to be a person and the kid learns how to make french toast. Overall I thought this was very good, loved the bit where Dustin Hoffman is explaining to Billy why his mum left, I thought that was really well done. Hated that lawyer with the mustache, he made Meryl cry 🙁

Wish I got a little more Meryl in this, but all the performances are great. Justin Henry is really the heart of the movie and I love that he is the snarky brother in Sixteen Candles. But also screw Dustin Hoffman for how horrible he was to Meryl during filming.

This was one of my Grandma’s favourite films, naturally I loved her deeply, she was like a best friend to me, and yet I’ve only just got round to watching this film! Let’s do a quick bit of storytime rather than a snarky one-liner. My Grandma divorced the same man twice, he’s an interesting guy, flawed like all of us, and maybe during their younger years they just weren’t a match, I don’t know why, I haven’t ever really asked.…

Wish the script offered more of a window into Meryl’s character. The court scenes are also a bit too vicious in contrast to the naturalism of the movie as a whole. Still I felt every bump of the ride. This watch helped recontextualize some memories of my own parents. For that I’m grateful.

very captivating right from the start. Such phenomenal acting from all three it’s very difficult to believe that a child can understand the concept of heartbreak, disappointment, abandonment, anger, hate, love, and want so deeply that they’re able to perfectly portray all of those emotions so naturally on screen. Can’t fault anything about this film, seriously. Sparknotes version: weaponised incompetence, deadbeat larper dad is forced to take care of his son and gets his act together in the process

The use of involuntary psych evals in court is a huge frickin racket. It’s immoral, unconstitutional and seriously freaking expensive. And THEN!!!!! If you want to question the psychologist afterwards in court, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO PAY THEIR FRICKING FEE. Could be thousands upon thousands of dollars, plus you have to pay an attorneys fees to prepare to question the psychologist, plus attorney fees for the attorney’s time in court. It’s frikkin INFURIATING.

Such a great under stimulating film. I love the style, to see how different life was in the late 70s was great, to see how much taste is retained is amazing. With that being said, the story is simple but so ahead of its time. A conflicting arch for both the mother and farther in this film that really leaves you just as split on your preferred parent as the kid that’s involved in the custody battle. As someone who…

Although maybe not the films goal, I think it’s sold a very real and stylistic view of New York. Also, the questions the put up by the film are tricky ones and I don’t think there is anyone in the wrong as such. Was just helps to make the film more personal in a way. As it’s a matter of subjectivity in a sense. 74/100
