I actually saw King Kong in a packed theater that was crying loudly at the end of the movie. Kong was a major hit in 1976…..earning almost $200 million in adjusted box office gross. I even got a King Kong board game for my birthday. So I have fond memories of King Kong. Rating this movie as a 8 year old kid in 1976…was easy….it was an awesome movie. Fast forward the tape to 2014…I am now older and maybe a little wiser…..and things are not looking so rosy for King Kong. First lets look at the good stuff: Kong’s island looks awesome. Jeff Bridges is solid as usual. Jessica Lange looks very sexy. The costume design for the natives…

“if he’s not gonna eat her, why did he take her?” Sorry, but I kind of loved this. I know I’m in the minority here, but I connected with this so much more than Peter Jackson’s remake. I finally gave up on his furiously overstuffed retelling of the 1933 original during that dinosaur stampede through the canyon. It just kept going. Shockingly empty CGI with no restraint, no sense of physical stakes, people running between giant legs for minutes, somehow never getting crushed. How thrilling. John Guillermin’s King Kong, on the other hand, completely swept me away. It’s romantic. Sad. Weirdly sensual and beautifully tactile, spiced up with surprisingly effective gore. People actually get flattened here. Not just the ones…

Derided as camp, ignored as contemporaneously inconsequential, and underappreciated in general, John Guillermin’s “King Kong” is worlds better than its reputation suggests. A mid-1970s remake of the 1933 classic, the adventure film is earnest, emotionally vibrant, and respectful of its cinematic roots. From its mysterious opening to its heart-wrenching climax, “King Kong” is a completely engaging and smartly assembled genre outing; and it is an excellent piece of 1970s popcorn cinema. Guillermin’s version of “King Kong” trades the original film’s crew of filmmakers for oil prospectors heading into uncharted regions of the ocean in search of petroleum-based riches. Instead of oil, the crew finds a giant gorilla, Kong, with an inclination for blondes. From the dangers of the jungle to…

monkey mondays #34 kind of flabbergasted at how much i dug this. dare i say one of the best takes on kong out there. he doesn’t look amazing but he looks leagues better than most of the stop-motion versions, and a hell of a lot better than any CGI kong. i loved how expressive his eyes were, sometimes terrifying and sometimes hilarious. some sketchy ADR aside, the whole cast is great. ever since the heartbreak kid charles grodin is always gonna makes me laugh. this just understands that you can’t half ass the humans in the kong movies, doesn’t matter how exciting the monkey stuff is if the humans are boring they bring the whole thing down. these guys were fun to watch, simple as that. deserves a much better reputation imo. i haven’t watched a movie in a week by the way

KAIJULY: MONKEE KONG All that I was expecting from a Dino’s production. It’s grand in scope and scale with some very immersive production design. The Kong’s suit was for the most part great, though there’s a scene while he’s holding Jessica in her arms that you can clearly see the fiber. But overall, Kong was great here. Loved their introduction with him slowly coming off the trees. Again, the cinematography here is really great, stunning even. A lot of the shots, just like in the original recreations, are as fantastic or even better than before. The acting is really good, from Lange as our damsel in distress to Bridges as the “hero”/love interest. The dynamic and chemistry between the two…

This movie is basically the “Die Hard 2” of the franchise and by that, I mean that this film is the forgotten gem of the King Kong films that will be going on for eternity. It is not the original classic, it is not Peter Jackson’s special effects extravaganza epic and it isn’t the newest addition (the one that is currently prominent in the cultural zeitgeist ) : “Kong : Skull Island”. “King Kong” (1976) takes everything that made the original great but with better special effects, a more developed romance (still not fully fleshed out but it’s still really fun) and more Kong trying to score….. Kong really is a horn dog ! John Guillermin was hired to direct…

I haven’t watched this since the mid 90’s… one of those Sunday afternoon channel 11 watches at my grandparents house—I liked it then, but my rewatch expectations were low but holy smokes… I kinda loved this? The John Barry Score, the buildup to fog shrouded skull island, Jeff Bridges, Jessica Lange, Charles Grodin, and the giant 70’s adventure movie scope of it all were right in my damn wheelhouse. Legendary lb champion PD187 said this movie feels like Brian De Palma directed a kaiju flick and I 100% agree with that right down to the score that (at times) felt very Pino Dinaggio-esque. I’m actually shocked at how many people don’t like this movie and how much it gets shit on……

Couldn’t focus on anything else but the fact that Jessica Lange and Jeff Bridges have the exact same haircut in the movie.

This film has a 2.8 percent on Letterboxd. This is an atrocity. Let me me see if I can bump it up a bit. First and foremost, give me a guy in a suit over CGI any day. For once Kong is actually scary and isn’t limited by stop motion or hampered by volume less visual effects. His roar is menacing and is aptly performed by the legendary Rick Baker. He also gets lit up by those choppers like he’s Alex Murphy in RoboCop. It’s absolutely brutal. This iteration of the film also excels because it has Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange. Their chemistry is good, it’s interesting seeing them in a film of this scale, and Lange just might be the most beautiful woman to have ever graced the silver screen. Finally, that John Barry score is just perfection. Subtle romance while bringing the spectacle, menace, and dread that accompanies a giant ape.

Thankfully no dangerous entity would ever threaten the wellbeing of the world trade center ever again after King Kong’s rampage here in this prequel to The Big Labowski. In all seriousness, the practical effects and especially the Kong suit is a genuine marvel. Same with the brief appearance of a 40 foot tall Kong animatronic. As a remake, I think it does a good job of setting itself apart as its own film by not repeating all the same plot…

I love how the film ends with Jack not closing the gap between him and Dwan while she calls to him. It reminded me of The Graduate’s final shot on the bus, where you can see the weight of a situation or choice progressively weigh on the characters in real time. Being caught up in the moment and then feeling the adrenaline fade and reality return.

Punching the big ape and screaming “Choke on me!” earns Jessica Lange 4 stars, all to herself. Unfortunately the rest of the movie isn’t nearly as good or interesting.

King Kong is a pretty dull adaptation of the giant monkey. It plays it mostly by the book, but there’s extra emphasis on the romance between Jack and Dwan. The romance is not the best written, and this movie does the fascinating relationship between Dwan and Kong very poorly. A lot of time is wasted on non-Kong-related shenanigans, leading to the main man feeling like an afterthought in his own movie. Sure, the C.G. on Kong was good for its time and looked quite intimidating, and there is fun to be had in the third act; it’s an overall drag and a lackluster remake.

Jessica Lange raised me to be the gay man I am today. Every time I shower I pretend I’m being held under a waterfall and then “blow dried” by a giant killer ape who’s obsessed with me. That being said, Jeff Bridges is waaaay too hot for my comfort in this movie.

While I appreciate that this isn’t a 1:1 remake of the original movie, I feel like it’s missing a lot in the Skull Island section. I think this movie has improved visually. Kong looks good in this movie. I just don’t know why they couldn’t add the other stuff. I think I prefer the original movie slightly more. I enjoyed this movie but it doesn’t have the charm of that movie. It was fun to see Jeff Bridges and Jessica…

It’s easy to look at dated effects, and malign the movie for its choices. But they tightened the opening really well story wise, and introduced the psychological arc of Dwan vs Kong, an impossible love story. Some say Beauty and the Beast, but look at it closer and you’ll see the dynamic is fundamentally different.

A really handsome and interesting revision of the original. Still can’t escape how dull the whole skull island “rescue” segment is. I don’t think any Kong has really successfully cracked that riddle.

I know that Kong is basically a man in a gorilla suit, shot from low angles to increase mass and size. The action is very small, and 1970s moments look dated, as do some of the special effects. Despite all this, the movie wins me over because of its ambition. Though it might seem like a big budget Hollywood production, this was an independent production that was sold for major studio distribution. Lorenzo Semple Jr.’s script is campy, and director…

I thought I had seen pieces of this movie before when I was much younger, but watching it now none of it gave me that tingle of familiarity. So this felt like a whole new experience for me, and I find it to be a pretty strange movie. Sure a lot of my ilk discovered this from the Fun City trailers disc (“come see the greatest movie of all time!”) and while it is more than a little ridiculous it is beautifully shot and so strange. Not like it’s a lost film or anything but it’s kind of incredible the kind of stuff that just fades away or disappears. Most everything. Bless FC and these young labels that are doing their part in re-writing the canon. I think it’s really neat.

Far better than I remember it being but Peter Jackson’s will always be my favorite. Everyone played their part so well. Especially Rick Baker pulling off a convincing bipedal ape rather than a normal facultative biped. Very fun! My one real complaint is not a fault of the movie. I watched a 4K copy which does NOT transfer very well in my opinion. If you’re gonna watch this, I definitely recommend a VHS copy or DVD if you must.

I love King Kong. But I can’t help but compare this one to its predecessor and then what was to follow with Peter Jackson’s Kong. What falls flat? The island, no dinosaurs, no colour. This movie is bleak to look at on the island scenes. The location shots are gorgeous and it looks like they shot it somewhere beautiful. But the sets are just so bleak like they had no budget to fill them with fake vegetation. (Probably bcs that’s…

The effects? Impressive, yeah, sure. Spectacle, I get it. The ape? Big guy! Big feelings. Sad & horny. Sure. Who isn’t? Jessica Lange!? A goddess, of course, stunning, sure! But Jeff Bridges…bearded, shirtless, and caring deeply about animals? HOT.

When I was a kid, my parents had gotten me a cd that contained all three King Kong movies. The ’33 version was colorized (it looked like shit), and for some reason I always avoided the ’76 film like the plague. I’d get to around 20 minutes before turning it off. I think my taste has slightly evolved since then because the only parts that I found remotely interesting now was the first half on the ship. Straight to the…

Fun, knowing, cheesy 1970’s epic with a terrific cast (Bridges! Grodin!) and a remarkably facially expressive Kong thanks to Baker & co. Works a hell of a lot better than the Jackson re-remake. Jessica Lange’s performance, as a nitwit who gradually acquires tragic depth, is perfectly calibrated and lovely.

An absolute must-watch classic—a cult story with a relatively well-chosen cast. Jessica Lange excels in the role of Dwan; given that this was her first film, I feel it should have launched her career with greater momentum—she is a fantastic actress!

This is me realizing that up until now I had no idea what the actual plot of King Kong was. First of all, what do you mean he didn’t climbed the Empire State Building but instead climbed the Twin Towers?? Second, I thought this was about a giant ape terrorizing NYC. The whole time, it’s a group of white ppl terrorizing an undisturbed civilization and kidnapping their ape

3:12:46 Television Cut (in 2k) Saw the 50th Anniversary Edition 4k at Walmart and thought what the heck since it’s something he’s wanted for a little while. Thought he’d watch the the longer Television Version first. Tennesseejoe previously has only seen the Theatrical and had a hard time discerning what was new. Perhaps there was just a lot of trimming. What is strange is, is that the message before this version started, was that there was going to be some letterboxed moments. Tennesseejoe is confused 😖 Skull Island is very docile and perhaps is the weak point.

“Why, you damn chauvinist pig ape! What are you waiting for? You wanna eat me? Then go ahead! Do it! Go ahead and eat me! Go ahead! The depiction of the character Jessica Lange plays in this film is awful. She’s projected as an unbearably immature and unintelligent young woman. Even by 1970s cultural standards, the character is a total insult to women. Because of that, this film was unwatchable and I didn’t finish it.

70s Kong exists as the forgotten blockbuster event the year between Jaws and Star Wars, arriving at almost the exact halfway point between the original and the Peter Jackson version. It’s clear this was envisioned as a landmark contemporary epic, bringing in the director of The Towering Inferno to balance the ensemble banter of the first act with the disaster destruction of the third. Yet, for all the grandiose moviemaking (we don’t reach the island until thirty minutes in, and…

I just wanted to say for the first 15-20 minutes of this movie there was just scenes with background music. No people talking. Then it finally showed the crew on the ship and the girl and Jack and the tribe and Kong. Sad to see what they did to Kong. All he wanted was the blonde girl

For all its 70s sensibilities, surprisingly modern blockbuster structure. Kong is basically the reactionary 70s macho fantasy made flesh: aggressive, territorial, sexually potent and utterly undone by a woman’s erotic power. His downfall is almost comically on-the-nose — he’s pacified, domesticated, commodified and ultimately destroyed because he can’t control his desire. The poor bastard is basically the 70s male anxiety about changing gender roles turned into a giant ape.

Nowhere near as bad as its rep: first remake of the 1933 original benefits from genuine chemistry between Bridges & Lange (touchingly Marilyn-esque in her first role), helped by proto-woke, anti-corporate dialogue from screenwriter Lorenzo Semple, & longtime hack Guillermin & DP Richard Kline pull off several indelible images: the mist-enshrouded island, Kong’s paw sinking in a cloud of chloroform, riderless horse-drawn carriages careening thru an abandoned Manhattan. And John Barry’s mournful score is one of his best. Sadly, the FX do deteriorate in the New York finale, with one comically inappropriate shot of the lead baddie (I won’t spoil who THAT is) about to get smooshed by Kong.

Nobody told me this had Pahoo in it It also came out the same year. 1976 was Dennis Fimple’s Big Monkey year One of the top comments references that this feels like a De Palma kaiju film, and they’re right only in that it deals in lecherous horniness, but with none of the self-criticism, cleverness, or commentary of a De Palma joint. *WARNING: THIS MOVIE DOES NOT CONTAIN DINOSAURS* In this one, Long climbs the Twin Towers instead of the Empire State Building. A lot to love here, some great visual FX that hold up really well. Jeff Bridges is a fun lead (even if he has very little to do in the second half) and the biggest highlight is the magnetic Jessica Lange who gives a standout performance as wannabe movie star Dwan. The movie does feel fairly uneven however, and it lacked a lot of emotional impact other Kong films have generated in its final act. Still a fun watch tho!

Even an environmental rapist like you, even you wouldn’t be asshole enough to wipe out a unique new species of animal. As the Showa Era of Godzilla came to a close, it seems it was time for King Kong to make a comeback, as this remake came out the following year. Lot of distractions in this movie. Jeff’s haircut and beard. The name “Dwan”. But most bothersome are the practical effects that take me out of the movie over and over again. Bad camera angels with wonky forced perspective, weird rear projection with mixed match lighting, man in a gorilla suit instead of stop motion puppetry. Kong ’76 is not great, but it’s a masterpiece compared to the sequel, King Kong Lives (1986). Make-up effects genius Rick Baker designed and acted in the ape suit and did an outstanding job, recalling years later that he felt he owed it to the legacy of Kong to keep the film from being a total disaster.

I was incredibly eager to watch the 1976 King Kong, and while I wouldn’t say it’s a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination, I also wouldn’t say that it does anything that makes it stand out. A Film From Every Year: Part 95 -1976- It’s ok. One of my biggest issues is that for the first half of the movie, the way King Kong moves causes him to just look like a guy in a monkey suit. Pretty good! It’s a remake of the 1933 film but not doing exactly the same thing like the Peter Jackson movie would do a few decades later. This is pre-CGI so it’s still practical effects for better and worse. Casting Jeff Bridges was very wise. Without someone inherently likeable in that role, the character would come off too goody-goody know-it-all. But you can’t dislike Bridges. Part 50 of the 52 Week Movie Challenge Book. Today’s theme is “50th Anniversary (2026)”: The 1976 King Kong remake is a weird film to me. It’s fixing the problems in the classic 1933 film, but it’s also trying to be edgy at the same time. The movie drops the ball with not adding dinosaurs, I know it was for budget reasons, but that’s so lame. I respect that John Guillermin and Dino De Laurentiis actually gave Kong and his…

This 70s remake of King Kong has a certain charm, but falls short in the end. I originally watched this on HBO or VHS. It’s hard to follow the blockbuster Jaws from the year before. And unlike Jaws, I think most people would like to see Kong survive. Anyway, when Kong realizes a woman he picks up in NYC isn’t Dwan (Jessica Lange), he throws her away. lol. And the subway driver is Crazy Ralph (Walt Gorney) from Friday the 13th. Finally, I think it’s interesting that Jack (Jeff Bridges) doesn’t fight his way to Dwan in the final scene.

I like this movie for kong’s human eyes and the scene where they gunned him down at the twin towers and you just screams sounds so weird but unironically funny

Objectively not good but I grew up on it and I LOVE the design of Kong in this

Bing Bong. While I can understand why some people might find the tribal stuff offensive, I was far more put off by Jessica Lange’s character. It’s so obvious that the filmmakers had no intention to do anything with her character other than sexualize her. Making the expedition be for oil fracking falls completely flat. The commentary on capitalism feels shallow, and it doesn’t really create a natural narrative way to get Kong to New York. Kong himself is a little…

While I’ll be talking about the 134 minute 4k Theatrical cut, this collection also offers a very rare Blu-Ray Broadcast TV edition which actually added almost an hours worth of character building content while editing out language and nudity, making that cut 192 minutes long. I may add a short review once I’ve watched it. 50th Anniversary 4K release: Immediately the picture is stunning. It still looks like a movie and not like that live soap opera feel we get…

I was 7 years old when I first saw this. I remember it vividly due to the fact my family were on holiday in South Africa visiting family. This was the highlight of a monster double bill at a local Drive in cinema, which I’ve never experienced before or since. (By the way the first film was Orca The Killer Whale). The first one was a classic that I love so much. The stop motion was awesome and so impressive…

King Kong is one of my favorite stories, and while this isn’t my favorite version, it still has some charm to it. I wouldn’t recommend the TV extended cut, though it really drags and runs about an hour longer than the theatrical cut. The theatrical cut has much better pacing and is more enjoyable.

Same monkey, same city, different building. If they were making King Kong today, I guess he’d have to clear it with Mamdani first and fill out all the proper paperwork. After that, the airplanes or the helicopters trying to stop him would probably be the least of his worries.

Reworking this narrative around the 1970s oil crises and in the midst of the American Bicentennial, helps update the story to be about the unchecked power of American Exceptionalism. As bad as what they did to Kong is, what the would have done to that island had they found oil would have been far worse. But whatever you have to do to become a star.

The movie that made America fall in love with the Twin Towers. Before this fine ape flick those towers were considered an eye sore. A visual blight. Two straight up and down skyscrapers that did nothing more than scrape the sky and sore the eye. Unlike Peter Jackson’s overly long, overly winded ‘faithful’ adaptation, this King Kong is an ape of the 1970s. There is no parable. No big message. It’s just a different enough and newer version. The explorers…

The directing is not very good; but the budget was big so it looks cool. Why does Jeff Bridges have so much hair? Lange has a lovely body, and is a good actor but not given much to do. (Peter Jackson’s version looks amazing, and has a more substantive role for Naomi Watts-a superb actor.)

This is the 1970s version of King Kong the 1930s classic it stars Jeff Bridge a very young Jeff Bridge and basically they go to this island to search for oil and they think they’re gonna have a gold mind and they don’t what they do find is King Kong and they decide to bring King Kong back to the mainland and Kong raises all sorts of hell There’s something I liked about something I didn’t like about there was…

That is an escape proof cage certified by the New York City government! King Kong is a fascinating watch because you can see the DNA of modern blockbusters as it’s being written. Last year’s Jurassic World Rebirth, for example, especially feels like it’s following the blueprint laid out in this movie. So while there’s a lot of great things about this film, like the (gorgeous, tactile) on-location shooting and the verve of the set-pieces (especially the ending), there’s also a…

HORNY KING KONG 🙅♂️🙅♂️🙅♂️ I absolutely adore this film. In my personal opinion the best King Kong adaptation and the most realistic version. This isn’t PERFECT but it is GREAT. The score is BEAUTIFUL top 5 movie scores of all time for me it’s HAUNTING PERFECT for KONG. I will say tho the 3rd act did age TERRIBLY mainly due to the twin towers 😵💫😵💫

If this really happened it would hold the record for worst thing to happen to the Twin Towers until 2001.

Remember seeing this when I was 6 in 1976 . Would watch every time it aired on NBC . Always been a personal favorite. Haven’t seen it in a while , but it holds up as a fun action adventure film . Technically a marvel for its time .

Ku mojemu zaskoczeniu, to niezwykle kompetentne kino przygodowe.

37. The next big King Kong movie on the timeline is this 1976 version with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange. Compared to the original, this is a very similar, following all the major plot points. Somehow this remake is 30 minutes longer, but I couldn’t really tell you where the extra half hour even went. The opening rushes past most of the setup for the expedition to Skull Island this time around, chartered by Fred Wilson, hoping to find oil on…

Had no idea before I saw this that it starred Jeff Bridges, much less a 26 year-old Jessica Lange. (OK, Bridges was also 26 but is one of those folks who seem to be born old.)
