94/100 King Kong was and always will be a rip-roaring, dynamic, and stunning adventure film, overloaded with spectacular set-pieces and a classical sense of tragedy. The magical stop-motion effects still are unmistakably brilliant, and combined with the marvelous matte work, this 1933 classic is unrelentingly vital, never stopping and always providing a genuine aura of spectacle.

i honestly got distracted by the whole big monkey situation after the best conversation i’ve ever heard in a film, “i love you” “but jack, you hate women”, was delivered about 20 minutes in… i literally could think of nothing else for the rest of the film i was in fucking hysterics

When I was five we used to rent this from Blockbuster and I would watch it over and over. Didn’t bother me at the time but I don’t know that I would show this to a five year old. I hate to take the Hays Code’s side but this movie is the 1933 equivalent of showing up to the Hays Code’s apartment at two in the morning soaking wet and holding a gun, shouting “give me a fucking reason!!” Some of the all-time images of film in this bad boy. Every time King Kong looked at the screen and smiled I felt an emotion I only feel when I’m watching this movie.

Damn honestly imagine you’re alive during the Great Depression and just straight chillin in your nice New York City apartment you can somehow still afford only to be murdered by some massive fucking ape for absolutely no reason simply due to the fact that some fucking white guy stole him from an island after that exact same gigantic animal completely massacred an entire village all because he was horny for some basic blonde bitch who ain’t even his same species

Fuck. This movie is so good that it’s frustrating to watch decades of filmmakers fail to understand why it works so well: A slim running time, lots of monsters, a cast of easily recognizable characters, and more monsters.

It goes without saying that King Kong looks fantastic for 1933 standards. A true pioneer of special effects. While also looking great and being iconic, this movie also features an impressive cast that deliver their roles very well and a soundtrack that compliments the drama seen throughout the movie.

A film that both critiques colonial practices, and perpetuates their stereotypes; an odd film indeed. There’s some real artistry in the stop motion, it’s a shame that the human acting really doesn’t keep up. The plot also feels both padded (did we need so many examples of Kong fighting a dinosaur? By the end it felt as if they were using up old stock…), and a little thin. I know it’s 20 years later, but Godzilla is really winning out in the inevitable comparison.

I’m grading this based off of the time it was made. Yes, King Kong 1933 is about as primitive as it gets – yet, I can only imagine how cutting-edge it must have been for those who saw it in theaters. Of course Peter Jackson’s 2005 version is far superior to our 21st century sensibilities, but what this film accomplished is nothing short of amazing. I’ll never forget showing this to my 5 and 6 year olds, their first monster…

Insanely fast-paced, especially when compared to the Peter Jackson remake. There’s a lot that simply takes place off-screen, probably because no one cares about how exactly they got the monkey to New York and where exactly they got all these airplanes from in a matter of minutes. Despite the short runtime, some of the stuff on the island still went on for too long. This is a popcorn flick, and a lot of scenes expect the audience to be wowed…

Beautiful, impressive, kind of batshit. Clenching my fists and shaking with rage every time they mistreat Kong. Why’d they do him like a freshman in a frat hazing! Dragged him out of his crib, tied him to a flagpole and called him bitchless! Certainly dated in some aspects, but as everyone says those special effects are absolutely nuts. Don’t know how they did it. Seeing this in theaters in the 30s probably went insane

A marvel of cinema. It is everything that makes watching movies exciting. A product of its time and yet timeless all the same. King Kong is deserving of his throne. Willis O’Brien’s model work would become the template for generations of stop-motion, but beyond that, even the likes of Eiji Tsuburaya, the legendary effects designer and director at TOHO, the man behind Godzilla, initially wanted his 1954 creation to be Stop-Motion, but realised the undertaking would be too much and…

There’s a really interesting contextual difference between this Kong and Jackson’s. Here, when Carl Denham says, “It was beauty killed the beast,” he’s saying that beauty distracts great figures from their discipline, makes them forget their nature, their strength. Ann Darrow kills Kong because he becomes obsessed with her. It was beauty killed the beast. In Jackson’s Kong, when Denham says, “It was beauty killed the beast,” it’s one more indicator of his delusion and detachment from reality. He’s a con man…

Just a handful of years after the earliest sound films, it’s hard to understate the impact of 1933’s pre-Code King Kong. The film revolutionized spectacle with pioneering optical compositing, stop-motion animation, and symphonic score at a time when some viewers hadn’t ever seen a talkie. This is the foundation of modern blockbuster filmmaking. Flashy showman and filmmaker Carl Denham takes a crew and new starlet Ann Darrow, played by Fay Wray, to the uncharted Skull Island, where locals kidnap Ann…

heheh monkey, big ape stomp through New York heheh In all seriousness, the effects and practicality of it all are beautiful. I loved Kong’s scary look, and for him to be tearing monsters apart on Skull Island and it look as brutal as it did. Safe to say I was shocked. It is a classic Monster movie but I definitely prefer my big Kaiju with more scales. also BULLETS?! THATS HIS WEAKNESS?! BULLETS? 🫩 It was Beauty, who killed the Beast.

The stop motion was phenomenal!! The performances were amazing and I also really really loved how it wasn’t just Kong introduced but also other monsters alongside Kongg!!! Did I mention the practical work and the stop motion? Because WOWWW!!!! I also believe that Denham deciding to bring Kong back with them with the risk of putting other people’s lives in jeopardy was probably one of the most realistic things about this film… because of capitalism ofcourse!!

The Eighth Wonder of the World King Kong is one of the most iconic films of the 1930s, and it’s easy to see why. The special effects, stop-motion animation, miniatures, and the way Kong interacts with the live-action actors were groundbreaking for their time. Obviously, the effects don’t look especially convincing by today’s standards, but they were still far more impressive than I expected and remain fascinating to watch. A very strange case of being “from the times” with the racial and sexist portrayals and dialogues, but that’s also the theme of the movie as a whole. With king Kong being a alagory for the slaves and the woman representing purity, made in a time with Jim Crow and rampant sexism. You can flip from interesting introspective scene to blatant mysoganistic or racist scene at a moments notice. A technically amazing achievement with amazing writing that is also very much of the times.

It was wild how the ultra famous 3rd act is like… 10 minutes? 2nd act is just pure technical showcase and bar for bar godzilla inspiration in every possible way. The story is very mid, 1930s had better writing than this, but they were selling sci fi, not plot, clearly. The 3rd act quotable phrases are delivered with the LITERAL in-universe intent of being quoted. I could imagine being in the 1933 audience and being absolutely wowed by it. Shoutout to my friend Alfredo who in the middle of the movie hit me with the “Every person here is already dead” deadpan nihilism that killed me.

This is the oldest film that I have ever seen, and it is also one of the best movies that I have ever seen. One of the main reasons why this movie is so good is because of the whole idea. I mean come on this is what started King Kong, one of the most influential creatures ever created. The way they made King Kong look so real for 1933 is just incredible and so ahead of it’s time. An absolute masterpiece and one of my favourites. I also heard there was a Peter Jackson remake of this, so I will watch that soon.

Desde el inicio está claro hacia donde va, siembra una alegoría al rededor del gorila y el poder del amor que por más boludo que suene es un tropo…

I have a distinct memory of first watching this in history class of all places. It was the final day of school term before the holidays and the TV had been wheeled out by Mr Owen on a heavy trolley. Rather than watch something historically relevant along the lines of Schindlers List or Gandhi, we watched a giant ape run amok in New York instead. It has been so long since I last saw King Kong that this may as…

The then-stunning special effects notwithstanding, the film’s thematic expression already far surpasses the depth inherent in its genre. On the surface, it seems to be just repeating the stereotypical prejudices of misogyny, racism, and anthropocentrism. However, the film’s true brilliance lies in its self-conscious, self-reflecting backtracking at every turn. While unabashedly presenting acts of symbolic violence, it also leaves the audience with room for criticism: Is what the character does truly the right thing to do? Who is ultimately responsible…

Aside from the story itself, which is, of course, iconic, there are some really innovative techniques here for the time. The stop-action, process shots, and cinematography are all unique. For the time period, an outstanding monster movie. Still, it’s silly, and much of it is Kong chasing and people running away and hiding.

This is so impressive for 1933 not for a second does it feel like they shy away from king kong being on screen and instead they opted for a dynamic mix of foreground characters interacting with kong. This is such a good starting place for the kaiju format.

Man being a prick at the expense of nature never bodes well with my emotional experience of a movie. It certainly a time capsule of repressive attitudes, yet visually impressive, but the Jack Driscoll fella went from not liking to female lead to telling her loved her in no time, it just took me out of it. In the end I found it a bit of a drag outside of the dinosaur action, still for movie from the 1930s you have to give it credit.

Limited technically but still pulls through with some great world building, cool asf monsters, seriously entertaining and a good allegory. Some of the wide practice fx/shots are so horrible even considering the time. The weird clay doll animation is seriously shite. It lacked a depth in its cinematography for me, some lazily shot scenes particularly on the boat made it feel small scale. Weird racial implications too but whateva

Another film that is a testament to why the art of filmmaking will forever be my favorite. Even in 1933 filmmakers were pioneering the creative experiments that led to creating genuine magic on screen. The use of stop motion and forced perspective in this film is still some of the most impressive I have ever experienced. Our creatures feel alive. Our actors feel terrified and hopeful and in awe of these wonders. Even the dangerous environments feel truly dangerous. The…

I didn’t think I’d enjoy this as I don’t really have an affinity for older films, but this was actually really good! You already know I love to see a man yearning, so this scratched my itch while also keeping me on my toes. This also makes the Universal ride make much more sense.

Awful racial stuff aside, I was not expecting this to hold up as much as it did. But the film is still completely thrilling and at some times can actually be scary. Besides a few parts, the stop-motion with Kong and the other creatures still look amazing and really add to the strangeness of Skull Island. Kong himself is animated so well and given so much personality just from how he moves and looks. The score is also amazing. I can’t imagine seeing this for the first time in 1933.

When Kong is shown in New York City, someone remarks they paid $20 for tickets (I assume that’s two tickets at $10 each), and Denham notes a $10k box office opening night, which works out to about 1,000 tickets sold. With inflation, those tickets cost around $250 each, and the opening night box office was approximately $257,000. Saw in 35mm, and came to the realisation that when a film is this old, it’s not really so immediately noticeable whether it’s…
