Part “Game of Thrones,” part “Snatch,” and almost all bad, Guy Ritchie’s “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” is one of those generic blockbusters that has nothing to say and no idea how to say it. It’s not the worst film of 2017 — after all, Jude Law plays an evil wizard who sacrifices his wife to a three-headed sex kraken in the first 10 minutes — but it might just be the most unnecessary. Things start intriguingly enough, as Ritchie opens with a prologue that promises to push this very familiar epic even further towards hard fantasy than any of its previous tellings — such is the dark magic of CGI. Launching us into a medieval world of men…

this is probably worth more than half a star, but I can’t watch it without thinking of when me and my friends first saw this. the screen goes black for a few seconds at the beginning, and my friend leans over and whispers “the end” which wasn’t even that funny, but I couldn’t stop laughing for some reason. long story short, we had a great time but the other people in the theatre did not like us. not one bit.

ritchie’s chopped and screwed approach to mythology, formalism and even time is endlessly fascinating, he’s interested in conveying humanity through blunt, aggressive, hazy filmmaking. his cuts are quick, his camera erratic and the images are frantic. nothing here is present in any form of reality that’s easily indentifable to us, the audience, life may move fast for us it seems but not like this, not at this pace with this energy. bodies just don’t move like this in the real world. this is a cinematic adrenaline shot, an intoxicating thrill ride that even when the bones aren’t breaking and the blood isn’t being shed, things don’t halt. that’s ritchie’s set up, and for a lot of the film, it is…

If you had a really bad migraine during Return Of The King and passed out, and then went home and watched 10 random minutes of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, this is EXACTLY what it would look like. Okay, it would help if you were a little bit high, and you were watching Lock, Stock in your man-cave filled with furs draped over leather couches, and plastered in Frank Frazetta paintings, while the scent of Axe Body Spray hangs heavy in the air. Who did your decor, bro? Full (and less Axe-inflected) review for The Verge here.

Loved the fantasy aspect of it and I’m a huge fan of magic effects. Richie blew it out of the park with it. The critics are no fun. 10/10

I have watched this with my wife every day on our Wedding anniversary. We have been married 9 years this is the 8th watching and we will watch it again next year. As a result I love this movie and look forward to it. Every viewing I notice more of how tightly this story is told as things are layered. There is a reliance on plenty of montages to move the story forward but they are exciting. Lots of nice…

they don’t make this kind of brainless trash quite like this anymore, somehow utterly without substance and yet still watchable
-

Jude Law looks like a toe for half the film

this shit is sooo comic book of a parallel universe of king arthur’s reign i also love that the way guy ritchie does it adds to the style and story like yes this all makes so much sense i love it i do wish it was more colorful tho cause the merlin show did the scenes with so much color and beautiful use of lighting and i think this one could’ve used some of that as well, it would’ve made it even more comic book like

The director flavour was clear and it was humorous, but felt way too long. Was a bit punishing to finish.

I remember enjoying this when I watched it in theaters, but definitely not the best King Arthur movie

Woof. Just very much a no from me dawg. The way this movie is shot and edited just immediately put a bad taste in my mouth. The annoying and repetitive score featuring EPIC drums got tiring really fast. There’s some really solid actors on this cast, and I think the story itself was fine. But the execution just wasn’t for me. The end felt particularly MCU-y in a bad way. But hey I did randomly call out David Beckham in his cameo.

50% Moses, 50% Batman, 50% Robin Hood, but mostly all video game pagan Arthur. I don’t feel like the Ritchie style really works for this but there are still some neat bits. Jude Law has been waiting for his opportunity to be an evil king.

Kind of a wild choice of story to infuse with his Ritchie-isms (also want to be a fly on the wall in those exec offices when Ritchie convinced them to give him $175 million for this plus a planned franchise. That seems wild to me, too, like 80s cocaine exec logic must have been going on). The ensemble feels a bit lacking, not enough individuality, so some of that montage doesn’t quite work, but the action sings as usual and…

At first I said to myself . . Guy Ritchie made this? Really? But then I remembered he made 2 Sherlock movies and the Aladdin remake right after this. So it makes way more sense than it first seems, with the roguish slang, English accents, over the top Slow Motion (which has aged TERRIBLY in the last 8 years). I somehow have to come to terms that we got this instead of say . . . the Real Rock’n’Rolla? King…

A movie paced for the tiktok generation. The story is held together with hype moments and aura more than anything else, but the final product is just so fun that I honestly can’t hold it against it.

Decided to log this because I remember watching it in theaters with my mom when I was 8 (I begged her to go, I was obsessed with Merlin) The couple next to us bought 2 giant buckets of popcorn and the only thing I remember of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is the crunch of their kernels.

Perhaps one of the most classic examples of a “crowd pleaser” film in the past 10 years. Critiques gave it 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience scored it at 70%. A stereotypical Guy Richie, slow-mo, interesting camera work, action packed film, it hosts a surprisingly star studded cast. Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Eric Bana, and Aidan “Littlefinger” Gillen would have been a strong lineup to take on the planned 6-film series. However, a large budget with a less than…

we watched it for raji’s movie day and it’s SUCH a raji movie omfg, it’s basically like if a video game and an anime were a movie. apparently this was gonna be the first of a six movie expanded universe which is why some stuff felt like it wasn’t fully fleshed out and some characters were just kinda dropped in there without any other context or elaboration. it’s nice to see my friends excited about things

I am a sucker for movies like this and the cast is stacked but it is SO BAD. I thought my movie was glitching less than five minutes in but that’s just how it’s edited! The WHOLE MOVIE IS LIKE THAT. Which is sad because the actors are great and the overall aesthetic and visuals are intriguing. I don’t watch Marvel movies but it kinda felt like they were trying to make a superhero King Arthur movie with the weird…

I was enthralled by this movie the first two times. But alas, the third time was not the charm. One of the biggest fall offs I’ve had with a movie. SSS-Tier soundtrack, fun characters, and, admittedly, a creative editing style. But it’s beyond obvious after this rewatch that the ‘creative’ editing was trying to cover up the hideous production problems. The problems of: concising a three and a half original cut down to two hours; ripping out the bulk of…

Extra 1/2 ⭐️ bc I love Guy Ritchie but truthfully this film was fun and certainly not life changing. This was defs a Londinium gang war between Arthur, his lads and those blackleg soldiers innit. I think this should have been a 3 part movie or a tv series bc it felt very rushed and had to skip through so much lore and character development. Also some scenes were copy paste from middle earth and were giving Mordor vibes esp…

Headcanon that the Lock, Stock crew is descended from these medieval chaps—it’s the only in-game explanation I can come up with for why the editing looks the way it does. Must be hereditary. Oh jolly good show! Utterly ridiculous. The parts that seem slightly ‘Surf Draculaed’ are automatically forgiven by way of the rest of it being an extremely fun adventure. Honestly can’t think of a better bloke than Guy Ritchie to have done a round table/Camelot romp and WHAT…

Was like wow they’re doing a lot of Guy Ritchie stuff in here and its directed by him lmfao PS3 movie. Most of the budget went to GoT actors and CGI. Hunnam acting mostly boils down to Calvin Klein underwear modeling. Action sequences for teenagers to salivate over
-

The thing is full of style and cool editing – but there is no substance beneath the surface. No character development, and the plot races around at break neck speed.

Big fan of Charlie Hunnam and he’s the reason I watched this but then I discovered my all time crush Jude Law was also on it and as the villain. It is epic, very fast paced and with incredible special effects mixed with good mythological storytelling. It is not great but not bad.

it’s cool how this movie invented AI slop montages a full 8 years before AI slop. there is no way to describe the plot that doesn’t sound like you’re exaggerating how dumb it is. Jude Law’s gotta build a big tower like the big stone in the Dark Lands where Arthur fights the ROUSes in an endless montage and the big tower’s give Jude Law the power to kill the sword but also makes Arthur and his sword more powerful. Astrid Berges-Frisbey giving the wettest slice of lettuce performance we finally found Lea Seydon’t.

king arthur came a lot didn’t he? jokes aside this movie is a mix of if peaky blinders and Lord of the rings had an albino baby

I get that this got some hate when it came out but knowing how Guy Ritchie makes his movies, this was a good medieval fantasy. Even if it was outside of his typical genre.

I hadn’t watched this since it was in theaters, but I always remembered liking it more than it’s reputation suggested. And it turns out, I was right. It was fast paced, cool, had some good action, and Charlie Hunnam was a fun Arthur. To be fair, it did have some bad CGI. And I can understand how some people might not like a King Arthur story being told the same as a modern day London gangster story, but it absolutely worked on me. And the opening is fantastic, Mordred’s giant elephants, and the huge scale of the attack were pretty awesome.

This film is the point in Ritchie’s filmography where you realize that even when he steps into a huge, legendary studio project, he’s still not willing to put his style aside. But it has a great cast, because I mean, come on—Jude Law? The brilliant thing about this film, for me, is the way it designs its editing around the musicality of dialogue. Pauses, interrupted sentences, character reactions, changes in shots, and the information contained within the dialogue all become…
