in my opinion we do not have a more entrancing, magnetic, fizzling, romantic, riveting, endlessly watchable actor in our (“our”) generation than Daniel Kaluuya

Kaluuya’s tremendous performance here pretty much makes up for O’Neal being somewhat underwritten. I get making him a character of ambivalence but Stanfield seems to be emotionally pitched at a guy whose psyche gradually begins engaging in open revolt but whose historical and narrative actions don’t line up with that. This is brutally timely, though, in a way that doesn’t feel like it’s the project’s sole priority. I just wish it had been grittier, more confrontational, but in any case it’s altogether striking and energetic.

In retrospect, of course Warner Bros. wasn’t going to put out a movie that genuinely grappled with Fred Hampton’s revolutionary politics, and it’s on me that I was idiot enough to wonder if they might. Instead, despite a couple quotes from Marxist literature, and one appearance each by the words “socialism” (at the start) and “proletariat” (at the end; also, I might have missed a “proletariat” in there, I wasn’t really thinking to count it), this mostly turns Hampton into a generic “the bad things are very bad” rhetorician, who talks a lot about revolution and gets very keyed up about it, but never gets around to pinpointing what the revolution will consist of or what it will lead to.…

Just fantastic. Shaka King takes a crucial moment in history that could feel so cloying and unfocused in the hands of a less careful director, and gives us a smart, uncompromising tragedy about fear and power that properly portrays Bill O’Neal’s story as both a slave rebellion and an act of war. Lakeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya are exactly as great as you think they’re gonna be, if not better, but Shaka King’s name better reverberate through the halls of every studio after this. Fred Hampton was 21 years old when he was murdered by the FBI. Twenty-one years old.

Career topping performances for both Kaluuya and Stanfield which is impressive considering how amazing their careers already are.

The single biggest weakness this film has is that it’s stars are much older than the people they were portraying. The effect this has is to diminish what’s most appalling about the stories of O’Neill and Hampton — that they were little more than children, manipulated and murdered by their government. I have no complaints with the performances themselves — although I think O’Neill is underwritten — and I think the film as a whole is very strong. But the age thing is a serious problem.

I was trawling the streets after the Knicks won Game 5. At a certain point, the NYPD formed a line and forced us backwards. Except, they were forcing us into another line of cops doing the exact same thing. Where exactly were they trying to get us to go? What exactly were they trying to accomplish except aggravate an already excited crowd even more?

I am….. Revolutionary!! The system is the one which either destory innerself or makes you manipulate aka brainwashed one. When you start to critize the system, either you get killed or you going to be killed to yourself that makes you comfortable for so long and felt me like we are actually lived in a matrix world for real . Judas and the black messiah tells racial betrayal, thought provoking and sharp dialogues and mainly the humane side of both…

i love when cinema does its job in educating the audience and telling stories of revolution, hope and anger, because yes, art has always been and will always be political. Judas and the Black Messiah tells a very important piece of history with two incredible and heartfelt performances. fred hampton is the face of the revolution; he’s a smart, dedicated, brave man capable of bringing all the people from every culture together to make a real change, because he knows…

After The Trial of the Chicago 7, promised and delivered. It feels like in a way these two are sister films, even though their origins and viewpoints couldn’t be more different, they feel like together are a really complete picture of “the struggle”. I’ve always been fascinated by the concept of cowardice. The idea of overwhelming fear, an excessive necessity for survival, and how that can poison a person’s actions, moral compass, self-worth, worldview, relationships. One of the finest depictions…

This film tried its best to sweep all of fred hampton’s marxist ideals under the rug, otherwise itd be too powerful for hollywoods sake. I really dont know much about the black panthers so better to read up on it after this movie, but wow that was a great introduction. Daniel kaluuya and lakeith stanfield again just amazing actors although yea it does seem a bit misleading to cast a 30 sum year old actor to portray a 21 year old, mightve been better to use a more unknown name, but im not complaining cuz the cast still did amazing.

I was reminded of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford in that Fred Hampton is already a famous figure being shadowed by someone who is only in his circle for himself, and is ultimately betrayed for a selfish gain, which then elevates their life into that of a legend. In the case of Bill O’Neal, his aims were not really to strike it rich but instead to stay out of prison. I think billing Daniel Kaluuya…

There’s a level of weight they manage to put on this story that just doesn’t make sense. Of course the source material is a great man and an easy spring board to bounce off of for telling a great story but it’s told so unconventionally that if I’d never seen it and someone tried to explain the premise to me I’d be annoyed by how obvious it is that a specific story is being avoided but my God was this…

”you can kill the revolutionary but not the revolution”

shit this movie had me emotional all 2 hours obviously there’s critiques because they barely talk about what a revolution is and what more they were doing and they reduced his rhetoric a lot, and we know that’s not how it was really. like the media always does with communists/revolutionaries. but when you already know what the Black Panther party entailed this was a very beautiful and captivating film.

Its a little late in the night when I finally got around to fiishing this movie but wow its really solid. I think lakeith is fantastic and so is kaluuya as always they do a great job together but I really loved FIshback’s perfomance she portayed such strengh and resillence in such a difficult and scary time. I feel torn between Plemon’s charecter and what he has to say about the white audience or bystander to the subject matter and whether he had validity in his worries or not.
