The star rating for the man himself is five stars. He was a genius who created a good portion of my childhood. The film is pretty basic and biased with interviews lovingly curated by Ron Howard. One wonders what was left out. I could have just listened to Frank Oz for the whole film. And I should break out my DVDs of The Muppet Show, Season 1. Premiered at Cannes and set to stream on Disney+ on May 31.

Jim Henson brought Muppets to screen, Creating a Muppet machine. He would permit, His friend Kermit, To show what it’s like being green.

For more gifts Jim’s work keeps on giving to the world, I highly highly recommend a very cool comic adaptation of his long lost, unproduced screenplay with Jerry Juhl called A Tale of Sand 🙂 It’s surreal and kooky and thanks to Ramón Pérez’s art, it’s one of the most uniquely impressive graphic novels I’ve ever read!

As expected, I cried. This is a very enjoyable, if all too brief, glimpse into the magical mind & life of Jim Henson. His ambition, dedication & spirit lovingly described by family & collaborators alongside some incredible footage. There’s a behind the scenes look at the early days of Sesame Street & his friendship with Frank Oz as they developed characters like Bert & Ernie but they also spend a good amount of time delving into his early experimental films & wild fascinations. It starts to feel rushed in the last half hour & in general I wish it had been longer. There’s more than enough material for a multi season docuseries but I will take what I can get. Jim Henson, we love you ♥️

The lengths at which Disney will go to not mention Steve Whitmire at all is almost comedic I’m glad Ron Howard directed this because I hope it raises awareness to how much Frank Oz looks like Tobias Fünke

Over the past 2 months I’ve had the pleasure of reading the excellent Jim Henson biography by Brian Jay Jones, which does an absolutely tremendous job of painting a portrait of who this guy is both creatively and personally. I wasn’t expecting this documentary to include nearly the same level of detail, but I was nonetheless rather disappointed at how little I got a sense of Jim as a person from this. After a while it mostly becomes an engaging enough doc about his most well-known projects (though The Storyteller and Jim Henson Hour really get shafted – would have liked a lot more elaboration on those!) Ultimately this was pretty solid but I would genuinely recommend the Defunctland miniseries…

I’ll never be able to watch ‘Rainbow Connection’🌈 again without thinking of Jim Henson squished into that underwater canister🗄️ right underneath Kermit🐸. A well made documentary🎥 about a one of a kind mind🧠. It tells an interesting life story and has some really emotional moments🥹. Some parts felt a little glossed over⏩ & sanitized (Disney still refuses to acknowledge Steve Whitmire🙄) but it’s definitely worth a watch if you’re a fan of Jim Henson and The Muppets💚.

Inspirador.

The footage of Big Bird singing at the funeral broke me.

I literally could not stop smiling this whole time but I also cried so hard I love you Jim I love the muppets

Us 80s and 90s kids were so lucky to have figures like Jim Henson, Mr. Rogers, Bob Ross, etc.

Love the montage of the muppet show where everyone is either being thrown into walls or exploding

no pretentious letterboxd quip, he was a titan of an artist and a great example of how someone so down-to-earth can elicit the best sort of inspiration.

The marvellous man behind the muppets gets a well needed Ron Howard doco treatment, my biggest takeaway is what he went through to get the rainbow connection swamp scene. I enjoyed the style of the connecting segments replicating his experimental films, although it could get confusing differentiating between the original archival material.

I’ve gotten weirdly into the muppets, and it seems to be a prolonged interest. I liked how hopeful the entire tone of the documentary was.

Jim Henson, a man who I admire as much as I do my own father. I bawl my eyes out as soon as I see the clock stop ticking, because why the hell did God take away a man who deserved so much more time on this earth? Jim and Kermit are the same, not just in voice, but in ideals, Kermit says in the first muppet film “I want to be on TV to make millions of people happy”.…

It’s time to light the lights and dress up right for this impressive, moving and out there documentary about the man (& wife and friends) who revolutionised puppetry. Told by his family, friends, and key figures in his life with footage from his experimental films, Ron Howard creates a unique and creative examination of just who Jim Henson was and what his legacy remains. So much more than just the Muppets!

The impact that Jim Henson’s projects have had on my life is too great to count. Starting out with The Muppets, I have like, four topics I am too knowledgeable about and they are on that list. My favorites are Kermit and Fozzie. (It’s my headcanon that Sesame Street counts.) Jim Henson had a Robin Williams sort of mind that went 100 miles a minute. In a word: Ambitious. He wanted to make art and media that was unprecedented with…

Jim Henson is a legend. This is a fantastic way to learn about his life and what he did for the puppetry industry. His kids are a credit to him and his wife 💚

The Liberty Biperty bullshit ball commercial came on before this and it made Jim Henson roll in his grave btw.

I like Jim’s interviews because it just sounds like Kermit is cosplaying as a business man.

Phenomenal film and tribute to Jim Henson. I could watch hours and hours and hours of behind the scenes footage of him and Frank Oz in their craft. So many cool things I didn’t know about Jim and his family. What a great documentary, really! Rest in peace Mr. Henson, thanks for shaping my life ✝️ 🐸🪕

“Sometimes I go for walks inside my own head. That might sound silly to you, but it’s very helpful to me.” “You know, I’m an idea man. I spend a lot of time thinking. Thoughts are a funny thing. They can lead to ideas.” “Because he wanted to do more than what was humanly possible, there was never going to be enough time.” in a world so obsessed with diminishing art and raising wealth, i find inspiration in jim henson…

Rewatched this from a very different viewpoint and admiration. Had the opportunity to go see Brian Henson in person today talk about his father’s legacy, previous works, and the future of animatronics. Can’t put into words how special that was. Very excited for Labyrinth later this month at the cemetery. Also time for a Dark Crystal rewatch. P.S. I will work with animatronics and puppets one day. That is a life goal of mine. I think this might have just sparked a new idea too. Mark my words.

Everything Jim Henson conjures up is friendly, funny and truly human. The world needs him and his mind dearly. I miss you Mr.Henson.

Pretty basic documentary about the legendary man who created the Muppets. Nothing really special film-wise though, just surface level interviews from friends and family of Jim Henson.

Man, what a great doc! Kermit being his mom’s coat and was used to entertaining his dying Grandpa was touching. Nice to learn some stuff about him and to see some of his other works than muppets. His film Time Piece was awesome. The Cube. His Cyclia project. Love that it was the British who gave the Muppet Show its chance. From Sesame Street & The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock to Labyrinth this man created something that has been a part of my life since I was born. A legacy.

I think it’s only right to be embroidering Miss Piggy as chappell roan while watching Also going to prioritize dark Crystal on the watch list even though I’m told it’s terrifying In case it wasn’t clear the Muppets mean the world to me

Jim Henson is one of my favorite artists for many reasons but like he gave us The Muppets. I mean cmon. ~A doc I think every creative needs to watch.~ My uncle prompted me to write things I took away from this doc and this is what I wrote down: 1)If you’re doing something ya don’t wanna do, make it fun for yourself and everyone around you. 😊 2)Humor is an antidote. 3)Be resourceful. 4)Experiment! Experiment! Experiment!

Jim…

A pretty neat documentary about the many creative ventures of Jim Henson with a little bit of insight into his personal life. As someone who’s always loved Jim Henson’s work it was really interesting to have an insight into the time line and sheer innovation of his projects. This documentary really highlights the true impact Jim Henson. If puppets dominated in anything mainstream, yeah, he was probably very much involved. I also liked that the documentary addresses how all this success and ambition affected his family life. I like when a documentary can appreciate someone’s work and legacy without pretending they lived without consequence. Very inspiring.

I still just kind of shudder over the Muppets being a Disney IP and I know that it was Jim’s idea because he wanted access to the imagineer technology and that is SO FAIR but the Disney tint on this made me ick and that’s MY professional opinion as everyone’s number one Muppet guy

A Merry Magical Muppet Mid(late)summer Marathon … I love Jim Henson, no surprise there. His magical world of Muppets has been a part of my life ever since I was born. Rowlf has always been my favorite, and he still is. Watching this is pure joy, although of course there is also a constant bit of sadness there because we lost Henson way too early. What he managed to achieve and leave behind in his only 53 years is incredible,…

Ron Howard is on the one hand the perfect vanilla type of filmmaker to helm a doc around the creator of The Muppets and Sesame Street. On the other hand though, Jim Henson was such a fascinatingly ambitious and experimental individual that another part of me was hoping for a more daring and radical director. *Streaming

Little fun fact for anyone who cares. In that quality video from seaseme street where they’re all dancing to a bass boosted version of sweet Caroline it’s actually a lobster at the DJ stand and not Elmo. The more you know
