   JEANNE DU BARRY is a handsomely mounted period romance but lacking in the romance department as Maïwenn & Jonny Depp have little chemistry between them. Depp’s french is distractingly comical and whatever dialogue he does have is not sufficient enough to flesh out his character or the story. Gorgeous looking costumes but an empty history lesson with very little to care about.

    Un retour tant attendu par le public et notamment par moi de Johnny Depp. Et qui plus est pour un rôle intégralement joué en français ! Nous voyons vraiment un enfant jouer et prendre plaisir. Voilà ce qui fait la richesse d’un film après des temps difficiles pour lui, Johnny, le roi est de retour.

    Pas du tout représentative de l’histoire de Jeanne du Barry. Elle n’était pas cruche comme ils la représentent dans le film et pourquoi un roi FRANÇAIS est représenté par un acteur ANGLOPHONE ????     Everyone is a whore. Why does every act like a child, especially those women who dislike the man cherecter I can’t take them seriously. The acting sucks all around. Usually a fan of Johnny Depp but he really does suck in this, he only has one facial expression during 99% of the movie.

    it’s clear the central aim of this film is aesthetics / the director’s vanity above everything else. hated mostly everything, but especially the part where she’s gifted a Black child like some exotic accessory. there’s nothing worthwhile being said or shown 👎🏽

    Che dire Johnny Depp sempre eccellente, anche l’attrice che interpreta Jeanne entra benissimo nella parte, finale molto commovente. È stato molto bello approfondire questa storia infatti Madame du Berry fu realmente l’ultima amante del re, la favorita, dal 1768 e fu colei che gli rimase accanto fino alla morte nel 1774. Anche la parte finale in cui il narratore esterno ci rivela le sorti che ebbe Jeanne dopo la morte del re e dopo l’avvento della rivoluzione francese molto bella. Mi è piaciuta molto l’interpretazione del Delfino e del domestico Zamor

    The first third is very reminiscent of Barry Lyndon in the way that she used her talent and charm to climb social ranks. Ending was so powerful with the formality’s and the friendship on display while the king died. On the downside I wish the movie was more focused on her instead of the king but I guess that is period accurate as women likely didn’t matter as much back then. Casting for Jean du Barry could’ve also been better, maybe prime Natalie Portman.

    Jeanne du Barry is a difficult movie to review because it’s certainly spectacular and beautiful, but many awkward choices coupled with key elements missing made the whole thing feel quite shallow. If I were to rate this solely on the cinematography and production design I’d give it five stars. In my humble opinion this has some of the best modern cinematography I’ve seen in a long time.     When I decided to watch this movie as Johnny Depp’s comeback film with my friend, I was surprised to see that it was in French, but what was most amazing was that he acted entirely in French. I could figure out the skillfully recreated the customs of French palaces.
