I almost want to beg for forgiveness for even watching this at this point – Kanye’s work as an artist has mattered to me since I heard Jesus Walks on my 13th birthday, and I would maintain that he might have been one of the most significant artists of the 21st Century even up too and including Vultures 1. But he’s also become increasingly repugnant to me, something only accelerated by this awful and lazy, hagiographic documentary which takes the classic easy way out of a rough assemblage of clips in a linear fashion, asking the viewer to put the throughlines together themselves. If there is one impressive element in the filmmaking it is in how Ballesteros manages to place…

i feel like having the opportunity to film kanye west for around 6 years is such a layup that i am so appalled by how sub par this documentary is. it has no structure or direction and literally no message. there are parts where it is very entertaining but it drags on for so long. there are aspects of this that are great such as beautifully shot b-roll and showing an authentic/in-depth/unbiased view of who kanye is as a person and how he thinks. that being said, i can’t help to feel there’s nothing going on here and just summarizes the last 6 years of kanye’s life, which anyone who even slightly cares about him already knows. this had so much potential but was just disappointing.

some real filmmaking/editing blunders in the framing devices… having the narrative be separated by both act breaks and year chyrons was strange and largely useless. still such a treat to see kanye up close and personal. he is so funny. really reframes a lot of his strangest moments. the moments where the filmmaker chooses to make himself known/referred to/apart of the on camera action are strange and inconsistent. he speaks from behind the camera in one scene to ask kanye a very simple and non-abrasive question, basically putting words in his mouth and offering him an answer, about if it is “society” that tells kanye it is weak to cry publicly. but in another moment, kanye monologues directly to camera…

terrifying portrait of modern american fascism viewed through the lens of celebrity culture. you can gawk at the astonishing number of recognizable names and faces that appear in this (to name but one, charlie kirk shows up around the 15 minute mark and i almost screamed) but this never loses sight of the absolute horror of watching an artist that means the world to millions get manipulated by those who know he’s vulnerable into emboldening nazi rhetoric (not to absolve kanye of his own responsibility). almost feels like it needed to be much longer, because i have no doubt there is an insane wealth of footage to further underline the film’s overall thesis, but i have no qualms about calling this an absolutely major work.

Definitely feels like the original plan was to allow this Nico character to just grab a bunch of footage then later have a real director come in and make something of it. But at this point Kanye is so checked out he just let Nico use it for what is obviously his first real directing gig. At the end Kanye remarks that Nico will need to find a narrative through-line or the movie will feel like just jumping antic to antic and that was incredibly perceptive because he didn’t find a through-line and that’s exactly what it feels like. Though it feels a bit mean to blame Nico for not creating a coherent documentary when there isn’t much coherence to…

Celebrities who show up before the ten-minute mark: Pharrell Williams, P. Diddy, Rihanna, Charlie Kirk, Candace Owens, Drake, and Lil Dicky. Swizz Beatz tells Ye his MAGA hat sucks, Michael Che drags him backstage at SNL for his infamous mid-credits rant, and Mr. West casually informs Playboi Carti he axed Pusha T’s “Off the Grid” verse for being too pro-BLM. But none of that tops the spectacle of Kris Jenner, crying, telling Ye they love him and it hurts that he’s not “perfect.” Okay, maybe Elon—in what’s perhaps his most pathetic public appearance yet—takes the cake. A ridiculous accumulation of BTS footage, like someone cramming a lifetime’s worth of name-drops into a speedrun, that completely transcends that reductive descriptor. To…

There’s a thousand million things I could say here, and i reaaaaaallly wanted to keep this short because I wanted ppl to actually read this one but this is a subject I’m way too passionate about. Apologies for the rambling format Well, for anyone who knows me, my party trick is I’m sort of a living encyclopedia about Ye. Kanye’s status as a pioneer in music was unquestionable when I first became a fan in the late 2000s, and his controversies were comparatively minor compared to his rap sheet now. We’ve come a long way since then and while I don’t really consider myself as much as a fan as I was back then, I couldn’t look away from the…

I could only describe this as the fall of Icarus if when Icarus flew up to the sun, he was given the power of it and chose to indirectly burn off his own wings. Very interesting and often uncomfortable, it shows the extent of Ye’s mental decay. However, at points it lacks any sense of direction and is just clips compiled in semi-chronological order. To the films credit it concludes with a self aware monologue discussing this exact conundrum, but I am still unsure of if there was a message or if the footage speaks for itself.

For me this was a very difficult watch… there’s nothing that’s scary or disturbing about it to make it a hard watch. it’s the fact that the greatest artist of all time building a lot of stuff him becoming extremely successful when he was already successful and then him destroying everything because of his mental health and him losing almost everything that he’s worked hard for because of his mental health and political decisions. Other than that in my opinion this is probably one of the best documentaries I’ve seen.
-
H
I found this very interesting to watch but it was just watching Ye’s life fall apart. It was sad to see. More on the documentary side of things, it just felt like lots of little clips strung together and that was supposed to tell the story. Maybe it’s supposed to speak for its self but for me that doesn’t feel like good story telling or particularly informative. I also feel as though this documentary was made too early as perhaps Ye is unfortunately not quite on the other side of this episode.

10/10 Phenomenal documentary, A tragic Realistic depiction of a broken genius, Kris wanted him to be Perfect, Chris Rock praised him for what he is, and Kim missed who he used to be, she rlly got the short end of the stick.., but ay if you didn’t hate the greatest musical artist of the last decade then you definitely hate him now

The most haunting portrait of celebrity I’ve ever seen. In West’s mind he keeps talking about breaking everything down and changing the world, but proves that the only thing he can really break down is every relationship he has ever had, as well as any goodwill he has with the public. By the end fame is nothing. Power is nothing. Money is nothing. Success is nothing. Art is nothing. It’s just a sad middle aged man sitting by himself, with hardly anything left.

I like the self reflexive quality of the film that they brought in near the end where Nico, a young guy who spent so much of his life following ye from one antic to the next, seems to be looking for the through line of this film. Throughout the runtime I kept wondering how he would frame the film’s acts and I almost felt like some narration was needed to give real meaning to it. But quite honestly I think…

A fairly interesting dive into why we should take mental health seriously, shown through perhaps the most popular case of this. Kanye is certainly a genius, who’s made some great albums, but this documentary doesn’t really show that, focusing on his more recent and controversial years, showing us a personal portrait of a man slowly but distinctly separating himself from the people who care for him and surrounding himself with bad influences and leaning into his insanity. As you can…

As much as I love Ye, (I believe he is the best artist of all time, very close with MJ), this documentary really fell flat for me. The prologue didn’t really go with anything in any of Act 1, or 2, and really didn’t catch my attention until his outrages and antisemetic remarks. Overall, the pacing is all over the place- and it cannot seem to stick to one idea without jumping to the next. I think the Netflix documentary is way better. 6/10, it’s okay.

really sad to see how misguided one can be, such frustrations that contradict their validity by falling on extremisms and right wing populisms… i can feel his love but maybe he feels it too aggressively to the point where it appears as hate «You know the best thing about being an artist is just like… and being bipolar is anything you do and say is an art piece. Firstly this is directed beautifully. I could write for hours about Kanye and give a 17 page essay about my opinions of him as a person and as an artist but at the end of the day the only real piece of information that is worth something is the fact that he is a real human being like everyone else and he has problems and issues that no one other than him will ever be able to understand fully yet…

Kanye is one of the greatest rappers and producers of all time. But honestly, that first sentence really means… nothing. No sleeping or you’ll explode!

A documentary about my favorite artist of all time where 70% of the runtime is him yelling, crashing out, and burning every bridge imaginable, while the other 30% is him dropping some of the craziest observations and views about life you’ve ever heard. The documentary begins on a shot of a star, and ends with a shot of a black hole. One has to wonder if it’s the same star imploded in on itself. A minor correction to the first statement (or addition). The documentary begins on a shot of Ye watching over a star. It ends with the black hole, without any observer in sight.

This was an interesting insight into a portion of Kanye’s life, the good and the bad, the praises and the crash outs. My only complaint would be that it skips gaps of time quite a bit, leading to confusion about what point of his career we are at and it leaves out some major moments. Act 1 & 2 felt nice and slow, but then Act 3 speeds up and skips to the end.

Can’t help but think about what could’ve been with all this footage in the right hands. Essentially this boils down to a mere summary of multiple years of Kanye’s life and that’s it. The only sense of structure starts and ends at linearly cutting together a bunch of clips, marking the year at the front of each batch of footage and breaking them up into three acts made clear by title cards (what is different about each act narratively, I…

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Kanye’s music so this will be a long one. My first reaction was that it was darker than expected. Too many trials and tribulations. This documentary is a saddening portrayal of the demise of Kanye West that detracts from all he’s contributed to music culture and beyond. Despite the incredibly rare and sought-after opportunity to reveal the ins and outs of the artist’s life over six years, particularly throughout the album releases of ‘The Life of Pablo’, ‘ye’, ‘KIDS SEE GHOSTS’, ‘JESUS IS KING’, and ‘Donda’, and the associating cultural shifts in music, fashion and art, this documentary merely added…

A cinematic masterpiece based on the life of Ye, greatest artist to ever live. At the beginning, it’s around the late 2010’s and shows much of Ye’s masterpiece of a project that never released, Yandhi (named after Mohammed Gandhi). poderiam ter deixado tudo na mão de um diretor de fato. tirando isso, eu diria que é quase o oposto do jeen-yuhs, que mostra ele tentando construir a carreira dele. aqui, é ele ficando cada vez mais maluco e aos poucos manchando a própria marca que deixou na música, moda etc. acho que um ponto é como ele consegue filmar momentos sensíveis que não eram visíveis até agora, tipo os detalhes com os filhos e a kim

I actually have mad respect for Kanye releasing this. This does not make him look good, but it does give a real glimpse at what he and those around him were dealing with. While some of his actions are undeniably abhorrent, I hope he gets better and this continues to be available as a reference point for himself and the world to learn more about mental illness. Im actually also pretty impressed with how Kim K appears here, both vulnerable, but at the same time patient and seemingly the only person who could handle him.

Nothing new is unearthed in this intimate, behind-closed-doors documentary about the unravelling of Ye. If you followed any of his outbursts closely (and let’s face it, you probably didn’t have much choice), then you’ll be familiar with the psychology of its subject. This might have less to do with the director’s level of access or his talent as a documentarian, and more to do with how little Ye filtered himself to the rest of the world. The man seen here…

Watched this because I loved the other docuseries but this one was awful. It’s by Kanye and it feels all over the place with 0 substance. The other documentary was shot by his mates who clearly knew him well and loved him deeply – you could feel that warmth and intensity the whole way through. It was beautiful. It’s such a shame he can’t see that anymore.

Melancholic film. Best descriptor of what happens when you surround yourself with too many yes-men (or you being a yes-man.) Even having no background with psychoanalysis – one can piece together the conducive manipulative engagement that comes with it. Instead of sticking to close friends and associates.

I genuinely do not know if Ye is actually like this or if its an elaborate long term performance art for the cameras..”the dangers of fame” or some shit like that. I sincerely hope its the latter (I doubt it). Intrigues me though. Like a bad car crash, you can’t look away.

In my humble opinion the goat. Most interesting human alive. Only film ever to have Carti and Charlie Kirk in it!
