This is one of my all time favorite films. An acting display of the first order. With Tom Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek giving heartbreaking performances. Tom Cruise’s cousin William Mapother is perfectly cast as the entitled spoiled scumbag murderer. Todd Field directed this ice cold revenge tale with a great eye for detail on small community America and the psychological need for retribution.

Hadn’t seen this in years and was really knocked out by it this time. Classic example (or what should be considered a classic example, in my opinion) of that old adage (which I think is credited to Roger Ebert but I could be wrong) that it’s not what a movie is about, it’s how it is about it. IN THE BEDROOM’s is a fairly standard story, but it’s one of incredibly quiet and consuming detail. The way that Ruth’s eyes latch onto Matt pouring yet another glass of wine, the way that the sound of the lawyer jangling coins in his pocket rises to drown out everything else, Ruth waking to find Matt disassembling the swingset in the middle of…

Powerful and elegiac, ranking up there with “The Sweet Hereafter” and “The Ice Storm”, “In the Bedroom” is a drama of a family marred by a horrific tragedy. Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkenson and Marisa Tomei are equally devastating as a trio of loved ones who lost aspiring architect Nick Stahl. My favorite scene: Wilkenson and Spacek are verbally duking it out with one another (Wilkenson whispers, “You’re bitter, Ruth,” reverberating quite loudly), only to be interrupted by a little girl selling chocolates. It is a priceless scene in a wrenching film.

In the Bedroom is staggeringly good. It’s a powerful indie that exists as a real drama around ordinary people. A young man has his life destroyed and a crisis of family breaks out. One tragedy can tear apart everything, for domesticity is very fragile. Our normal lives take very little to be broken. The power of In the Bedroom comes from its very ordinary mood. It is deeply sad because it doesn’t try to be melodramatic or emotional. It just exists. Of course, some of the dramatic turns are not everyday occurrences, but they never feel unreal. The filmmaking is slow and deliberate, with everything carefully and delicately placed. It has a quiet approach that keeps action offscreen, like something…

Masterpiece in almost every regard. Should have won two Oscars (arguably three, even). Both Spacek and Wilkinson put on a clinic. Todd Field’s filmography epitomizes quality of quantity.

We rarely stop to consider that the human condition is woven from threads. And when life puts us to the test, all it takes is for one of them to tighten for everything to begin to unravel: our ethics, our morals, our everyday lives, and, with them, the people who are part of our lives. Envy, lust, guilt, and resentment… feelings that ultimately lead us into chaos. There are limits to all of these, but sometimes life pushes us beyond…

At first I thought this was just going to be a summer romance, but the moment Sissy Spacek showed up, I knew something terrible was about to happen 🙂 It’s such a quiet but devastating film about grief, anger, and how one tragedy can completely change a family. I loved how restrained it is. Nothing feels overly dramatic or forced. The silence, uncomfortable conversations, and little moments say so much. The singing scenes were some of the most emotional moments…

Lindo.

One of the best films I’ve never heard anyone talk about. In the Bedroom is an odd one, a movie that fuses the best of Ordinary People and Mystic River, with a pinch of Manchester by the Sea thrown in for good measure. Contemporary in most ways, yet alludes to simpler times (especially when one of the characters is discussing the ease of getting together with all eleven of their grandchildren and the old FastPasses at the Disney parks). It…

So much grief, so little said, and performances that do all the talking. Sissy Spacek, Marisa Tomei and Tom Wilkinson are just incredible. You can feel all those emotions in every pause, every look and in every silence that they want convey through the screen and literally what a great directorial debut for Todd Field too. Now it’s finally time for me to watch Tár.

💗 for how real it felt, like I was walking the story with the family; and also for the way a dear friend shows up. It’s all there, and it’s a deliberate and tight wrangle on your heart. RIP Wilkinson – the man had an impactful pair of eyes. A story about a small family in a small town where seemingly inconsequential lies in their lives lead to huge fissuring outcomes. After finishing I went back and rewatched parts. It…

Grief has never been so well depicted on film (other than maybe Hamnet). A devastating portrait of the selfishness of America and our fleeting nature as mortal beings. Todd Field is just so good at showing us lives not so dissimilar from our own rocked by a revelation or event that sends ripples through every aspect of life. Being put into the shoes of another is difficult to do and yet it’s done with such ease that you automatically feel…

In my opinion, I really enjoyed that movie about grief, revenge, age-gap romance, family drama, etc ! Very interesting, haunting, captivating, quiet, intense and it caught my attention. What a wonderful cast (Tom Wilkinson, Sissy Spacek, Nick Stahl, Marisa Tomei, Karen Allen, etc.) ! No wonder this movie has been nominated for the Academy Awards for best picture, best actor (Tom Wilkinson), best actress (Sissy Spacek) and best supporting actress (Marisa Tomei) ! I heard that the movie is one…

Wow. The piano player from Eyes Wide Shut can direct like Hell. Amazing drama that feels like a 2 in 1. Very cold, very satisfying. Looks beautiful. Marisa Tomei is one of the most beautiful women to grace the screen, almost as if 0 plastic surgery…helps? Honestly, out of all of the noms for Best Picture for that year, this was the true winner.

This film manages to put you on a position of unease and yearn towards a satisfying resolution fitting for the conflicted context of the tragedy, and Todd field’s mastery exert that particular vibe, starts very subtle and would eventually pile on for that cathartic closure. 77/100

Core Theme: Grief Character Driver: Revenge Emotional Outcome: Somber What has stayed with me about In the Bedroom is its unflinching honesty about grief. It doesn’t offer easy answers or satisfying justice. Instead, it reveals how profound loss can quietly reshape good people, leaving me with a sobering reminder that revenge may promise relief, but it can never restore what has been taken away.

Lowkey lost the plot for me and kept dragging. While filled with excellent performances by a cast with great chemistry, the plot takes a turn and becomes a story that I found to be mostly very, very repetitive and/or dull, sometimes both at the same time. I guess it’s interesting, yet the characters who get the story going disappear nearly entirely about 45 minutes in. I think my problem with this is how surface level it all is. The direction…

frank dies thirty minutes in, but he’s never the movie’s subject. the film is about what grief does to the people left behind. every conversation between matt and ruth carries something they can’t say out loud until that bedroom scene finally tears it open. tom wilkinson and sissy spacek never play for sympathy—they just exist inside the loss. the ending doesn’t justify revenge or condemn it. it leaves matt with another thing he’ll have to live with. todd field never tells you what to feel. he just watches, and somehow that hurts more than anything else. five stars.

Oscar 5N (BF), Golden Globes 1W/2N (BF), Bafta 2N

How has no one talked about this more? On paper, the plot is fairly straightforward (similar to Todd Field’s other movies), but when characters are this well-written and well-acted, magic can happen. It felt that, especially by the end of the second act and into the third act, the movie came to life. It’s funny seeing so many reviews mention the slowness. While certainly a slow burn, I’m not sure you can achieve what they did without showing all the…

From the few films Todd Field has made, ‘In The Bedroom’ is an outstanding first feature. Very rarely do films capture grief this well. Whether through disruption of routine, performances, or the utterly naturalistic cinematography suffocating the everyday suburbia and habitual comings and goings of Maine — Field captures loss, heartache and tragedy with such pathos and thought-provoking authenticity — refusing to simply resort to overt emotional gestures, and instead allowing moments to linger through the cadence of absence. It…

22/30 Love the mood on this one. The light refracting through the windows. A sleepy coastal town going through their day-to-day. Deftly juggles three different films in one. Remarkable. Watched because I finally caught up with A Beautiful Mind and wanted to see the other 2001 Best Picture nominees. Of the ones I’ve seen (this, that, Moulin Rouge, and LotR Fellowship), I simultaneously believe and can’t believe that the worst film won. Many such cases.

Field is great at drawing believable characters and settings, letting the story unfold unhurriedly despite its many sudden twists and turns. The middle act sags a bit, but the strength of the performances and confidence of the storytelling carry it through to a climax that’s riveting in its deconstruction of vengeance and peace, even if it probably won’t hold up to investigative scrutiny.

B
A delicate balancing act, made even more impressive by this somehow being Todd Field’s first movie. Its basically two different, well-made films in one, and while I found the first third the most interesting part, I can’t help but respect the guts in going through with making the other two thirds. There are certainly few great explorations of revenge in film, and even less general explorations of grief in film, especially when coming at it from this unique angle.

Walked around Old Orchard Beach tonight. All I could think of was the ending. Too much mustard on the accents. Nonetheless. “Into the quilted dark fields and the wood, the beginning of the true forest, where a bit of the ordeal ahead starts show, and our hearts to feel afraid… but just as no swing could ever be thrust above a certain height, so, beyond a certain radius, the forest could be penetrated no further. A limit was always there…

The Fowler family’s life takes a devastating and tragic turn after their only son is murdered. We see the before and the after of how this traumatic event changed their lives forever in a raw and intimate way. It’s also so powerful because of its introspective and documentary-like style, which makes it feel so much more real and humane. I adored Sissy Spacek’s…

If this were 20 minutes shorter the pacing would be excellent and In the Bedroom would be a 5 star masterpiece. Alas, it’s just a little too long, so you’ll have to settle for a very good movie with rock-solid performances (especially Wilkinson) and brilliant direction.

Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson, and Marisa Tomei give great performances in Todd Field’s In the Bedroom. The trio face tragedy with a mix of blame and guilt that is quite crushing, made worse due to the legal implications of a domestic incident. Sissy Spacek finds a cold disconnection that burns with her disdain. Tom Wilkinson finds that his normal routes to justice crumble with modern justice (or lack of it). Marisa Tomei with another fabulous accent is warm and sexy,…

I went to see it for the Oscar nominations and was glad I did. It was slow, a bit long. But always love seeing Sissy Spacek and Marisa Tomei. But Tom Wilkinson owns the film, a cautious man, not wanting to admit his capacity for violence. My favorite from director Todd Field.

Todd Field’s “In the Bedroom” only slowly reveals its real subject in a story that has a shocking reversal at the end of the first act, and then looks more deeply than we could have guessed into the lives of its characters. At first, it seems to be about a summer romance. At the end, it’s about revenge–not just to atone for a wound, but to prove a point. The film involves love and violence, and even some thriller elements,…
