Trivia. 1) Van Damme & Paulo Tocha have both appeared together before in a prison film titled “Death Warrant” in 1990. 2) Marnie Alton previously was Van Damme’s love interest in Replicant (2001), also directed by Ringo Lam. Timelords Thoughts. Anyone expecting a high kicking action packed extravaganza will be sorely disappointed by this Van Damme movie as ‘In Hell’ delves into more of a character piece about a man who’s life is changed after he kills his wife’s murderer & sentenced to life imprisonment in a maximum security hellhole full of corrupt guards, mafia influences & a sadistic warden who conducts a illegal fighting ring piting prisoners against one another for gambling & entertainment. Jean Claude Van Damme gives possible his best acting…

It’s Jean-Claude Van Damme but all dark and gritty as he’s sent to a maximum security Russian prison after killing the man who murdered his wife and knocked over his birdcage. In Hell is ever the apt title, as this prison really isn’t nice at all. Director Ringo Lam goes in hard with the dour and violent atmosphere. It’s all corrupt guards, prison rape and big muscular men beating each other up…along with a techno soundtrack and stylistic flourishes including moving photographs, ghosts and a moth’s eye view camera. The story is pretty nuts and bolts prison stuff with the usual array of caricatures and a central thrust that sees Van Damme having to become a monster himself to fend…

#JCVDecember More Ringo Lam/JCVD silliness, this time in prison. Unfortunately JCVD is not Chow Yun Fat, Lawrence Taylor is not Morgan Freeman, and this is not Prison on Fire or Shawshank Redemption, or even Penitentiary. It’s basically just Story of Ricky if you stripped out all the stuff that makes Story of Ricky the best prison movie ever (they even crucify JCVD in the rain like Ricky). But it’s not without its cheesy pleasures. JCVD is repeatedly visited by a magical moth while in solitary and for a moment I thought he was going to Gandalf his way out. But instead his wife (the prostitute from Replicant) just comes back as a Force Ghost, Obi Wan-style. LT’s super dramatic voiceover is a gas though, as is the fact they keep Sloth from The Goonies in the basement. Plus, why are there so many Americans in this Russian prison? And JCVD has more terrible hairstyles than you can imagine.

The Lam Shank ReDammetion Wowzers, this is a bizarre one folks, but it’s also kind of a bazaar because it offers up so much esoteric nonsense. I’m not going to lie, the title used to make me think that this was some DTV dumpster fire where Van Damme battles demons and the devil and whatnot like Arnie did in “End of Days”, or some shit. It turns out…it’s a whole different and delicious flavor of DTV bullshit! It sort of aspires to be “Midnight Express” or an even more prestigious type of film, but in truth is essentially the prototype for Isaac Florentine’s “Undisputed II: Last Man Standing”. We are treated to an American who can throw hands/feet’s false imprisonment in…

Van Damme obviously has a certain amount of vanity. He has reverse-engineered numerous scenes in his movies to show off his beautifully-sculpted ass. Nevertheless, he’s the only one of the big ’80s/’90s action guys who is willing to look vulnerable, to emote, to swing for the fences, and to risk looking ridiculous. He was not born a great or even good actor, but over time he has willed himself into becoming one. This direct-to-video effort is the third and final collaboration between Van Damme and the late Hong Kong action legend Ringo Lam. The plot involves Van Damme being sent to a brutal Russian prison after murdering the man who raped and killed his wife. As action movies and cable…

Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought that In Hell was a direct-to-video release given the filmmaking quality is leagues above other DTV films I’ve seen from this era with Ringo Lam delivering an adaptation of Alan Parker’s Midnight Express. Lam’s patented brutality and kinetic energy, even in a movie that feels much more clichéd than his previous ones, kept me engrossed and with Jean-Claude Van Damme allowing himself to get vulnerable, even if the movie relies too much on familiar setups and homoeroticism, it leads to a film that is rarely boring despite the corniness and seriousness being at extreme odds with each other. The music doesn’t help in the slightest. While this movie certainly isn’t great, the ending being simply ridiculous, it’s a perfectly watchable movie despite these issues as it remains thoroughly gripping and engaging throughout, easily scratching an itch of many Van Damme fans.

What if I told you there’s a JCVD action picture that takes place in a Russian prison, is directed by Ringo Lam, and narrated by Lawrence Taylor* featuring JCVD wearing a series of increasingly ridiculous wigs that make him look more and more like Jesus? All while his character tries to survive multiple Pit-Fighter style scenarios, talks to a moth who may or may not be spirit of his dead wife, and consistently has to avoid being raped by a high-ranking Russian mafia member. Is that something you might be interested in? A Case of the Splits *yes, that LT…the famous, HOF football player and neophyte actor

truly the only sensible follow-up to the outer body experience that is the Ringo Lam/JCVD collaboration of Replicant two years earlier – and straying even further from the glossy theatrical release of something like Maximum Risk which they made in the previous decade – In Hell is somber and surprisingly contemplative when it isn’t concerned with bloodying faces, showcasing Van Damme in wigs or featuring more than one scene of prison yard dancing; make no mistake, this is a crime drama masquerading as Death Warrant 2 and is all the better for it

“Sorry for the mistake.” – Kyle LeBlanc Van Damme works in constructions in Russia. His wife gets killed and the guy who did it gets away with it. Hey, this is Russia, this kind of stuff happens all the time, so don’t overthink it ok? But Van Damme takes matters into his own hands and shoots the motherfucker just outside the courtroom where the guy was declared not guilty. Now that’s what I’m talking about! Gotta do what ya gotta do! So Van Damme is sentenced for life and is sent in this prison that is basically… hell on Earth. Mommy’s-boy-rapes, corrupt guards who only seek to milk the prisoners of their money, fights organized by the warden so he…

Action! – Johnnie/Ringo’s Hong Kong Actions: Lam On Fire Ringo Lam returns to prison, this time in Russia, accompanied by Jean Claude Van Damme, as a man who loses his cool after being wronged and ends himself in a prison where he must learn to survive. The director once again takes a break from the action to focus on something more dramatic. Although much of the action is derived from a number of brawls, this is really more of a prison drama, complete with characters and a plot that are perhaps cliche and slightly silly, but enjoyable all the same. The tension between Van Damme (who, along with the writing, does a good job of making me care about and…

Probably the weaker of the three JCVD/Ringo Lam collaborations simply because it’s missing some of that silly, athletic ambition that led to the pretty spectacular stunt setpieces of Maximum Risk or the ridiculous twin serial killer procedural elements of Replicant, whereas this seems pretty content as just the simple DTV prison B-movie that you could very easily see being made without this star or director. Which is not the same thing as saying that it doesn’t benefit from their involvement though, this is still pretty good with Van Damme at the point in his career where he’s been doing this long enough that there’s a natural quality baked into his feral weariness and Ringo Lam who always had a bit…

A little slow moving for my taste. I do like Lawrence Taylor’s character and the overall premise, but the execution is just too slow.

Takes itself very seriously and presented so gritty that when ridiculous, even spiritual things happen, it feels like it’s from a different movie altogether and kills the flow. I have time for Van Damme as he’s always been more willing to show vulnerability than say his Seagal named contemporaries and he does that an awful lot here but this asked far too much of his talents overall. It’s a character piece and he hasn’t really got them chops, to the point i got an idea where KYLE LEBLANC was mentally more through his wig changes or goatees than i did through any of his acting choices.

Lacklustre. Full of prison film cliche, poor melodrama and disappointing fights given Lam’s pedigree. At the end he just puts on a general uniform and drives out, the guards have all been closely watching all of his fights, why did no one recognise him?

Movies like this are why traditional rating systems are dumb. This is so enjoyably ridiculous, because it’s clearly a JCVD star vehicle with him shooting for the stars, but if you’re out-acted by former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor, maybe your ambition was a bit misplaced. Still, this was entertaining as hell in a really dumb way. So, what star rating is that? Iunno.

Old film that takes forever to finish. Half baked script but somehow still a good watch. The film was very sinister but also very real. There’s people out there living this exact hell. Felt like a reality check. No happy endings, just desperation

Un van damme molto drammatico rispetto al solito, viene accusato ingiustamente dell’omicidio della moglie e diventa subito un dramma carcerario, non ho capito perché è ambientato nell’est Europa però va bene.

Enjoyable and sometimes ridiculous prison drama with strange character archetypes and a lot of prison butt rape. I love that Van Damme is willing to swing for the fences with something like this, not scared to take chances even though he might look silly. Which he does. I don’t care. I thought he was pretty good in this. Starts feeling a little long there for a second how many times can they put this guy in the hole? Whatever it was alright. Probably better than knock off..
