Every single line of dialogue in this movie is entirely deliberate, a piece of an exceedingly intricate puzzle that you slowly start to piece together over the course of the film’s runtime. Shockingly, at no point does it become tedious, repetitive, or boring. It’s a genuine thrill to see how even the most mundane conversation can be warped into something far more important and meaningful over time. I can’t even begin to process how deeply this movie affected me. I outright sobbed at multiple intervals, even though I legitimately had no idea what was going on in the story. Many people will view this movie the same way Jake’s dad views abstract art: nothing more than an empty mess devoid of any true meaning. However, I consider this unabashedly bizarre masterpiece to be one of the most profound, genius (not genus) works of art I’ve ever experienced. It almost makes me want to give the musical Oklahoma another chance. Almost.

while iain reid’s novel extracts horror from blood and dread, charlie kaufman’s interpretation extracts it from existentialism, from the unavoidability of aging, from the unease of being perceived, from the eeriness permeating the claustrophobic atmosphere. they both tell the same story in completely different ways, which is exactly what a book-to-film adaptation should aim to do. in the book, there’s a fascinating passage about how humans need allegory and metaphor in order to more comprehensively understand the world around us. this is the most central idea of the film, i think: our tendency to tell ourselves stories in order to live (a personal fav sub-genre of mine, thank you joan didion). especially as it seems to function as an unexpected…

She’s thinking of ending things. Whatever her name is. Lucy? Louisa? “The Young Woman,” as star Jessie Buckley is listed in the credits? It changes like the weather or the color of her winter coat, brazenly and yet in a way that you don’t really notice until it starts to snow. His name is Jake — it’s always Jake (Jesse Plemons). They’ve only been dating for about seven weeks, though seven weeks can be long enough to crystallize into its own kind of forever. He’s driving her deep into farm country in order to meet his parents, and she’s perverse enough to go along for the ride, even if she can’t shake the feeling that the two of them are…

Too dumb to understand this. Said as much out loud when the movie ended and my friends confidently explained the synopsis, and I literally did not pick up on any of it. Felt like I was listening to freeform jazz only to have the lights come on and see everybody crying. It sure felt like a nice movie though! Everyone’s just bringing their A game here. Buckley is such a talent, and Toni Collette is one of the funniest actors we have. Maybe one day I will read one (1) book and my brain will have swollen enough to come back to this and understand everything– much like Keanu Reeves in the popular film Matrix! Now that’s a movie. Bullet go slow… he do karate… what if life was a computer… what if the sky was green… freacking epic 🙂 I’m thinking of rewatching things! Things meaning Keanu movies!!! People keep askin’ if I’m ending things… yeah, I’m thinkin’ I’m ending things!!!

Sometimes a film just works. I’m not entirely sure who everyone is (I assume this is from Jake’s perspective and maybe Lucy isn’t real?) but the humanity and deep feelings are so present it becomes almost overwhelming. This is a true piece of creative filmmaking that worked in a way that few things do. The way the film slowly allows you to connect whats happening while leaving certain aspects open works very well. Idk man, this just hit me. I think there’s a level of personal relation to the themes of this that cause it. This is easily the most surprising 5 star I’ve ever given.

I’m thinking of ending things Waw! Shoutout to the director/writer for this work of art. I’ll go ahead and say if you’re not well versed in a lot of topics here you’ll be lost in the sauce 😂😂 I’m not even joking. I must commend the writer for the absolute brilliant writing, the dialogue is to live for. Though I still can’t say what this film is about 😂😂. I really loved the drive and how he would shut her…

Just a mix if every weird, sad, negative, hateful, horrible feeling i’ve ever had, hating people i know, not connecting with them, pointlessness of life, resentment, animosity, lies, disillusionment, I HATED IT ABSOLUTELY, litr gave me PTSD & anxiety, but ig that was the goal, esp the drive in the beginning & their conversation how did a drive in a blizzard make me feel all those horrible things, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING LOVED IT
-
A
Literally nothing makes sense until the very last minute of the movie. Very, very weird.
-
R
Starts strange. Gets stranger. I think there’s some overlapping time stuff, and a few people who are actually the same person. But I can’t be sure. Probably a movie that rewards very close attention.

Like the other Kaufman movies I’ve seen this goes from disorienting and confusing in the moment to brutally unsubtle in retrospect. After sitting on it for a day or so I think this movie might be life ruining-ly good.

Genuinely one of the most mind altering movies I’ve ever watched its truly a peace of art after reading the book and watching the movies it’s one of the rare occasions that they are both as good as each other best to go in not knowing anything because you will come out a different person truly and experience.

I went in blind but I kinda regret it. This was literally the weirdest and most confusing movie I had ever seen. When I looked up the explanation, it made a lot more sense. If only I’d been smart enough or known just enough about what the idea behind the movie is, I would maybe have loved it quite a bit. But because I didn’t, I’m lost at what I should rate it 🫠

Kaufman Kaufmaned. The whole High School scene was everything. The Voice: “It’s not bad, once you stop feeling sorry for yourself because you’re just a pig, or, even worse, a pig infested with maggots. Someone has to be a pig infested with maggots, right? It might as well be you. It’s the luck of the draw. You play the hand you’re dealt. You make lemonade. You… you move on. You don’t worry about a thing.” (Holy…

Bad and boring. Nodded off briefly and woke up to an interpretive dance number and the most nonsensical ending I’ve ever seen for a movie. Had much hope going into this because of the cast and was sorely disappointed. It gets one star for production value and no more for its utter lack of plot or gratification.

It was only after googling the title of this movie and it gave me the suicide hotline that I realized the double meaning of the title, so maybe I’m dumb. It’s definitely a vibes movie in that the plot doesn’t really matter it seemed mostly to just try and evoke feelings of uneasiness and the passing of time which I thought they did well.

a girl goes with her new boyfriend to meet his parents, and then things get r weird. she spends the entire movie fighting to hold on to sanity (felt like I was a therapist stuck in a session that would never fucking end) a boy who grew up in a dysfunctional family, became insecure and suffocating, and is deeply ashamed of his family. basically, a collection of unhealthy relationships that the girl keeps trying to escape, only to feel guilty for doing so

every conversation feels like a piece of some much bigger puzzle, even when you have absolutely no idea what the puzzle is. once everything started coming together, the shifting identities and strange memories felt like jake trying to reconstruct a life out of his regrets, fantasies and loneliness. didn’t enjoy watching it, but that ending left me thinking about life for an uncomfortable amount of time. also i fell asleep for two hours so maybe i wasn’t the target audience.

The first 20 minutes or so actually bored me quite a bit, but it eventually turned into one of the most horrifying experiences of existential dread I’ve ever seen. Felt like an insanely scary horror flick, but without any actual horror. Basically what if “It’s Just a Burning Memory” by The Caretaker was a movie. Can’t really say that I ‘enjoyed’ watching this, there was this constant suspense, but it never really ‘clicked’ with me (even though I think I kinda get the plot). At the same time though, I can see some of its merits.
-
L
Felt like a weird, confusing Get Out 2. I thought I understood everything, until whatever the last 20 min are. Maybe I’m to dumb, maybe that’s intentional. But anyway I liked it.
-
G
i can’t say i liked this tbh. i usually love mind bendy weird movies but this was soooo long and slow and i hate musicals so the ending wasn’t doing it for me. i will say that a lot of little things came together in the end and while im still not totally sure what i just witnessed it seems like almost a loop of the jake’s memories and life cycle from meeting the girl on. other reviews said the book was way better so maybe i need to read that.
-
T
This movie feels like a play, which I LOVE. Definitely Charlie Kaufman’s best directing work, it’s hard to have an extended scene in a car be visually interesting but he does it in spades here. Whether it was an authors decision in the book or Kaufman’s visual choice as a director, the snowy scenery was great to have as a backdrop to this road trip. This praise for the direction does cease to be once we get to Jessie Plemmons…

M
Exhausting in its philosophical claptrap and redundant dialogue. Had the potential to be profound but the delivery lost me. Descartean hellscape. Wandering plotline with some redemptive themes of misogyny in the final 1/3. Contemporary dance final act???? The incontinuity is annoying.

T
Watched again with Ari and after reading the novel. The diversions from it range from subtle to extreme, but overall they work to pare the story down to an essential core that is less sensationalized but more poignant – less complex but more nuanced. I can understand the perspective of a reader who fell in love with the book hating what Kaufman did to it (such as the review that inspired me to read the book in the first place),…

I was really looking forward to watching this film. It had been on my list ever since it released. I mean you see written and directed by Charlie Kaufman, starring Jesse Plemons, Jessie Buckley and Toni Collette and think to yourself how these are all green flags. But no. Now, I know it’s based off a book and from what I heard, people say that this is more of an accompaniment rather than an adaptation which really sucks cause I…

Watched this for the first time in years since my friend randomly decided on this one. By the way, it’s one of the first movies I’ve ever logged on Letterboxd. Despite the very slow pacing, it’s so well written and so well acted. I have theories in my head about the movie and it’s honestly depressing. Glad I saw it again, but man it’s very slow. By the way, I just liked the random Robert Zemeckis title card during the fake movie scene, I found it funny.

While I did like it, I felt that I didn’t completely understand what it was trying to say. The plot was purposefully confusing and quite sad. I loved both of the main actors and their portrayals of struggle, yet so many decisions felt unanswered. The wheel chains, the pigs, the drinks in the dumpster. Maybe I’m just unaware but many things felt weird.

Deeply unsettling and very cold feeling (literally, I always shiver watching this!). Interestingly, we had a lot of thoughts on this while we were watching it – had to be in portions, of course – but once it was over, we woke up from it like from a nightmare we wanted nothing to do with. Really appreciated Jessie Buckley! What a performance! Some choices in the movie were too on the nose, too opinionated or full of themselves. Almost moved this to 4/5 but tbh, dream-logic movies are too rare to hate on this too much.
