“you ready for this?” so immaculate that it’s almost untouchable in a way, like looking at artwork through glass. it’s still a sight to behold, but feels slightly inaccessible somehow. the story and how it’s presented and mixed up is my biggest issue here, but it’s overall packaged so carefully and beautifully that i find i didn’t mind much at all in the end and nicholas britell really did it again: this is easily the best score of the year. my goosebumps were continuous

“Unbow your head.” the waltz of life and love and hope. there is no greater force of good on this earth than barry jenkins’ camera.

I wish I had more to say about Beale Street, but all I can call it is heartbreaking. It filled me with a tension that so many black films fill me with, where I’m waiting for an ultimate, inevitable cruelness to set in, and so paralyzed by that waiting that I watch it more like a horror film. But there is no cruel twist coming. It’s all there from the beginning. And although it is more than anything a story about love and the lengths we go to see that love through, it’s a story about how much longer that length is when your very existence denies you to the right to live a peaceful life. Every black person born in America was born on Beale Street, born in the black neighborhood of some American city, whether in Jackson, Mississippi, or in Harlem, New York. Beale Street is our legacy.

i love James Baldwin’s book, but it’s a testament to Barry Jenkins’ talent that many of the most beautiful parts of this adaptation are of his own invention (Dave Franco’s scene being a clear and particularly moving example). what an extraordinary, generous, perseverant film this is. as with ROMA and BURNING i feel the need to see it again before i say anything more, but yeah… Barry Jenkins: not bad at making movies.

J’avais adoré le lire alors, en regardant le film, j’ai retrouvé des repères, des personnages que je connaissais. À part une bande son superbe, le film ma rien apporté de plus que ma lecture. J’aime toujours autant le livre mais le film, je l’oublierai.

I don’t mind the slow pacing; it’s refreshing for a story to meditate on its characters through stillness and gentle gazes. Barry Jenkins is masterful with his imagery. The way he illuminates dark skin is unparalleled. The acting is incredible across the board. And, as usual, Nicholas Britell’s music is perfect. My primary issue is the disjointed nature of the story. Each individual scene—to varying degrees of success—perpetuates James Baldwin’s social commentary on African American life better than it represents…

“I don’t want to sound foolish, but remember love is what brought you here. And if you’ve trusted love this far, don’t panic now. Trust it all the way” Buenísima película, una cruda historia muy bien contada. “If Beale Street Could Talk” es un grandísimo trabajo de Barry Jenkins a nivel guion y dirección, pero también destaca mucho por sus actuaciones que son excelentes y hacen que todo lo que veamos se sienta muy cercaron y realista. “To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a state of rage almost, almost all of the time — and in one’s work. And part of the rage is this: It isn’t only what is happening to you. But it’s what’s happening all around you and all of the time in the face of the most extraordinary and criminal indifference, indifference of most white people in this country, and their ignorance…” -James Baldwin

Great score, great cast, controversial premise, should be a home run right? Well… I finished feeling like I wanted more from this film. The pacing felt slow at times and the story overall was unsatisfying. For me, it was missing that one scene that transcends a film regardless of its subjective flaws. Either way, I’ve seen a lot worse, and I’ll definitely be rewatching, mainly for the score!
-
M
This whole thing feels like sleepy montage that’s about to go somewhere interesting, but never does. The pacing was so tiring. Aside from Domingo and Basset, I found the performances either odd or uninteresting. Corny as all get out. I was shocked to learn Steve McQueen directed this, and then baffled by the reception on here. Really felt like a TV movie.

Road to 1000 5 star ratings Rating No 929: If Beale Street Could Talk Barry Jenkins, You Beauty. I am now literally disappointed with the way how Disney treated you with the Mid ass film Mufasa: The Lion King when you have given banger films like this one and Moonlight. I really appreciate the scale how the film is made and also how beautiful is also this film to the fullest. This film is an amalgamation of both the mixtures of being Heartwarming and Heartbreaking. This one is a must watch. Fo not even think of missing out on this amazing film.

We have seen several, countless films even that depict racial prejudice and injustice. It is something that we will unfortunately a topic that even as we are into 2026, society as a whole cannot seem to escape. I live in the United States and I still see these actions even today, either online or in person. Director Barry Jenkins has never been afraid to tackle this issue head on as many works of his have been surrounding this particular topic…

Gorgeous and heartbreaking. Every second permeates the same limitless love as the book, which is definitely one of the most incredible of all time. Think I very much hold the book closer to me than this adaptation, but that’s no fault at all of anyone involved. Just the power of Baldwin’s words.

I was reallyyyyy looking forward to this, but damn, it’s a snoozer. Granted, I still have half an hr to go, if I can pull myself to stand it. It feels like a stage play. And knowing James Baldwin, he took settings and places to be characters themselves. This doesn’t feel like New York. It’s like generic Black America. AND IT S BORING. Sorry, it is. I’ll see if I can finish it though.

Barry Jenkins “try not to make a gorgeous, gentle yet crushing film” challenge: FAILED Everything is so good in this: the acting, the casting, the cinematography, the editing, the SCORE. Especially want to acknowledge how well Jenkins adapted a Baldwin novel into film, whose works I’ve always read and thought would have been impossible to interpret for the screen. The scenes and the non-linear narrative work so well and never leave their original influence behind. It is so textured, it’s so deep. I wish I had better words to describe it. This film smells like smoke and velvet!

I don’t know what it is that prevented this film from being perfect to me—maybe that I wish it hit a bit deeper—but it damn near is anyway, and definitely serves as a wonderful reminder to read the book. Still a very moving and textural film that left an impression on me anyway, with the persistence of love at its core, and made clearly with such a lovingly deft hand (and also a very lush, mesmerizing score that I’ve been…

“But neither of us is young anymore… we can’t afford to be. Instead we gotta live the life we’ve been given, and live it so our children can be.” Beautifully done. A film that touches on the topics of romance, family, injustice, racism, poverty, history, etc and its complexities. The cinematography is one of the best I’ve ever seen, it’s like we get to see and know the characters on a personal level. The music OMG how can I not mention the music. It is SO good and refreshing to hear. It really captures every moment perfectly 👌

At its core, Barry Jenkins’ sophomore effort If Beale Street Could Talk is a hopeful tale of love conquering all. Set against the backdrop of racism and oppression in 1970s Harlem, the film opens with a young couple strolling through the city. Everything about the scene radiates a sense of infinite possibility. Sadly, that hope is soon crushed beneath the weight of the times. Social injustice drives this deeply moving family drama as it moves fluidly through time. A man…

The cast in this film is great. Everyone was perfect, but Brian Tyree Henry truly stood out. His performance might have been the most powerful moment in the film. You could really feel the pain in his scene, and knowing that Fonny was facing the same struggles Daniel described made it even more impactful. The expression on Fonny face at the end when he saw his son writing his release down suggests that he won’t be coming home anytime soon. That was heartbreaking.

Such a beautiful, emotional and restrained love story. From Barry Jenkins, the director of Moonlight (one of my favorite movies of all time), I stumbled upon If Beale Street Could Talk quite some time back and I’m so glad I finally watched it. While watching this film, I constantly kept asking myself: Why is life really this unfair? What is the point of all this hatred and racism? Based on James Baldwin’s novel of the same name, the story follows…

So beautifully soundtracked – visually super crisp and fitting. Sort of jaded and definitely sad, im unsure what can be said about if beale street can talk other than the ways through which Barry Jenkins makes stories upsetting. Barry Jenkins has a trend to hold close up long shots (think this is the right terminology) and it’s super effective – seeing this after going back and watching his super early work (tall enough) it’s clear he’s become a master of capturing the small details in people emoting. I thought this was beautiful if not a bit sad. I love Colman Domingo as always.

The scene where Tish & Fonny have their first … Somehow even more tender and sweet than I imagined when reading it, Barry Jenkins absolutely smashed that. No surprise though, just from Moonlight it’s easy to see how masterful he is at depicting the realities of love and quiet intimacy. I loved seeing it right after Fonny’s mother’s little tirade, reminded me of this tweet I always come back to~ x.com/aprilajoyr/status/1596641181009850368?s=20

Technically speaking, If Beale Street Could Talk isn’t the first or only adaptation of one of James Baldwin’s novels, but the film’s widespread reputation as such is understandable given just how much of this feels like the first and only possible translation of the author’s distinctive voice. Barry Jenkins—fresh off the heels of gifting us with the greatest film of all time—was already sharply attuned to Baldwin’s instincts for bitingly poetic prose and internalized self-actualization through the prism of race,…

Found myself in tears throughout, it’s cruel but so hitting to have a film so full of joy, intercut with such injustice and anguish. The score is amazing (and is what initially lead me to give this a go), loved the mix of the jazzy elements with the sorrowful piano, definitely won’t leave my head for a while. the work with colour really kept my mind working. red ended up being his colour in my mind after the scene in the restaurant, him wearing a red crossed shirt and having a red umbrella, while Tisha also thought about his past. in the scene with their first time, he was bathed in red light while she wore yellow. when she peeled off her clothes, the light became more orange around them. so yellow’s tish’s colour, so colour of both…

Felt very fitting to follow up my Roma rewatch with another emotionally devastating 2018 film set in the 70s and led by an expecting mother of color.
