There’s something fundamentally misguided about these types of stories. The implication of a tale where a racist is reformed by spending time with someone he hates is that the reason racists still exist in the world today is that they simply haven’t had the right life experiences, rather than that there are systemic conditions that manufacture and preserve racist sentiments. We’re supposed to believe that Captain Joseph J. Blocker (Christian Bale) simply hates Native Americans because he hasn’t been forced to transport one across the country yet, not because the United States spreads anti-aboriginal hatred to justify its existence as a nation on another culture’s land. No. That’s just not how it works. The reason people are racist is institutional,…

Scott Cooper makes Capital-A American Dramas that are as narratively, thematically and politically complex as a Michael Bay film but because he does them in a laborious macho art weepy style instead of an ugly crass explosion I guess I’m supposed to take them seriously. This time he does the Good Colonialist story where the white man’s burden and guilt have a chance to act out extreme violence, not that it matters because the only thing Cooper knows how to do is steal his generic, empty-calorie genre stylings from much better filmmakers (previously Scorsese with Black Mass, here Ford and all the somber revisionist western filmmakers in conversation with his images) and get otherwise good performers to mumble about rote…

Mostly on autopilot. Like I was thinking it was weird that Ben Foster wasn’t in this and then yep, Ben Foster shows up. Anyway there are lots of guys who shouldn’t be taking a pass at THE SEARCHERS and Scott Cooper is definitely one of them.

Gloppy revisionist western that’s half as smart as it thinks it is, and twice as grim as it needs to be. Strong ending that’s just ridiculously unearned. Scott Cooper!!! *shakes fist at sky*

“Hostiles,” a sturdy and characteristically brutal new Western from “Black Mass” director Scott Cooper, begins with somebody shooting a baby — that’s not a spoiler, just a warning. The year is 1892, and a settler named Rosalee Quaid (Rosamund Pike) is teaching her young daughters about the magical power of adverbs. Suddenly, their New Mexico homestead is raided by a band of Comanche renegades. They murder her husband, they shoot her two girls, and they fire a bullet directly into her infant son; Rosalee carries the lifeless bundle in her arms for days, because it’s that kind of movie — the only kind that Cooper knows how to make. Hostiles boasts the greatest collection of Native American acting talent in a Hollywood film in years, with Wes Studi, Adam Beach and Q’orianka Kilcher, yet it can’t think of more than a few words for any of them to say. Their role is to humanize the white people, and to forgive them. And then they are no longer required. Review at Seattle Screen Scene.

Cormac McCarthy’s western epic Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West is an obtuse and nearly insurmountable story to commit to screen, and I have my doubts that if it ever is produced that it will properly encapsulate the themes and poetic depth of that novel. But I can appreciate when a movie scratches the surface, and Hostiles is definitely one of those films. In it, Christian Bale is a U.S. Cavalry officer tasked with escorting a Cheyenne war chief back to his tribal home in Montana before the chief succumbs to cancer. To make things worse, the two of them had been at Wounded Knee, and there is a deep-seated hatred stemming from decades of violence that…

I like the complexity of each character and their relationships and how the tragedy of the fighting between Native Americans and Americans affected them. I like that it shows that in the end most people on both sides didn’t really enjoy the brutality they had in each other, even if it meant Americans taking over.

Beautiful movie, psychological post war story. Bale had a great performance but in my opinion I feel like they didn’t give that same opportunity for the rest of the cast, especially the Native American side of post war. Also fairly slow several times but it’s a stunning movie visually.

What a total waste of potential. Overegged melodramatic mess. The performances are great, the cinematography is beautiful, I just think it’s misspent on bad direction and a bad script. There is more pathos in John Wayne standing in that doorway at the end of the Searchers than there is of any five minute sequence of Rosamund Pike and Christian Bale screaming, gnashing their teeth and tearing at the dirt with their bare hands. Just shoots for completely unearned drama and…

Hostiles is a raw and deeply emotional movie. It feels very real and heavy, with great acting and a lot of emotion. Not just a Western, but a story about pain, hatred, and humanity.

dramatic, violent, beautiful. the mustache situation looks good on bale. the movie occasionally veers into melodrama and saccharine music territory, but balances that out with a good amount of grit.

Scott Cooper is not exactly a director I have any consistent faith in but considering that this and Out of the Furnace are two of my favorite Bale performances I wonder if I should actually give Pale Blue Eye a chance. Really moving and effectively brutal but I can’t totally shake the bad taste of white (anti-)heroics overshadowing much of any internalizing of the female/indigenous characters who mostly exist to be stalwart representations of serenity through suffering; even despite initial…

I was so disappointed to see Timothee Chalamet appear on screen and then incredibly happy to see his character killed within like five minutes. Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike delivers outstanding performances as expected. This was such a tragic story yet somehow a bit weird for kind of justifying the former racists actions because he becomes friends with the natives, but once they are all cool with eachother all the natives are killed? And the natives have like a total…

About a man with a heart of stone from war forced to escort his enemy on a journey across a barren land Every step in it holds dust, hunger and the memory of death The silence in it is heavy because it’s full of old hatred and new fear There are no clear heroes and no clear villains. Everyone is wounded in their own way It’s not a war movie It’s a film about how humanity can be born even among enemies

Absolutely brutal, emotionally taxing film. Beautifully shot and steeped in a genre romanticizing Manifest Destiny, while clearly intent to ground its characters in horrible reality. I don’t know if I’ll ever need to watch this film again, as its atrocities have left such a strong impression I can’t see forgetting it anytime soon. I’ve never given Rosamund Pike enough credit, and she made a fan out of me by making the most out of a difficult role. Christian Bale turned in a lunchpail-like stellar performance, and Jesse Plemons similar on showed himself (again) as the type of actor who can add to any scene.

Super slow. And sloppily executed narrative imo. If the aim was to humanise Native Americans why go with this angle. I compared and contrasted a lot with Killers of the Flower Moon while watching and it really highlights to me how flat this depiction is. The message here is “Native Americans are humans who deserve respect.” Yeah ik, and? Spent more time going into justice and even then it remained fairly surface level. I do like the mutual respect that grows between Blocker and Yellow Hawk though. The most western aspect of the movie imo.

I have tried so hard with Westerns, whether it be the Dollars Trilogy, Unforgiven, Open Range, 3:10 to Yuma (need to try that one again actually) or True Grit but I just can’t enjoy them. I think the western aesthetic is very interesting and is an intriguing time in American history but I just couldn’t find a truly great western picture in my eyes. Favorite part is that Timothee Chalamet is non-critical (still earlier in career). For some reason I feel that pisses him off more than not being in something. I’m not sure if I’ve felt this way about a movie before, but I had one overwhelming thought while watching it: this is visual poetry. In my mind, there’s an entire genre of poetry dedicated to capturing a feeling, and those feelings drive the narrative. Incomplete thoughts. Sensual descriptions. Simple adages. Meditative contemplations.…

Just such a shocking film. I genuinely think this is a well-made, captivating plot with great action sequences. I’ll admit that the social commentary unfortunately falls a little flat to me. Yet still, aside from the real world connection issues, the story is enjoyable to me. I think the interpersonal struggle that both Joe and Rosalie deal with seems compelling. The development of respect and the test of that respect at the end feels satisfying. Not to mention the constant…

Ironically I think my most disliked genre is Westerns. You just know they are gonna have some form of racist protagonist and something about a man on a horse in desolation just doesn’t jump out to me generally.
