“Live! Live, you fucking whore!” I remember seeing this in the theatre when I was in my last year of high school and an elderly couple sitting in front of my friends and I finally threw in the towel and got up from their seats and left the theatre after the “School Bus Flamethrower” scene. I honestly don’t know what in the fuck they were expecting when they bought tickets to a trashy, scuzzy, deranged, ultra-violent grindhouse exploitation film called: HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN. 🩸💥🔫

An homage to exploitation films starring Rutger Hauer as a shotgun totting tramp — that fits right in with 1987s ‘Street Trash’. Also, it’s the best thing to come outta Tarantino/Rodriguez’s ‘Grindhouse’ double feature. That list is as follows: 1. ‘Hobo with a Shotgun’. 2. ‘Planet Terror’. 3. ‘Death Proof’. 4. ‘Machete’/’Machete Kills’. I’ve, yet, to see Eli Roth’s ‘Thanksgiving’ — so this list’ll eventually be updated.

Hobo with a Shotgun is the perfect neo-exploitation movie. The film is violent, stylistic, and has a great deal of authenticity to it. This film is not a Corman-esque piece of exploitation trash (one that utilizes nudity and violence to make a profit), but a post-modern love-letter to the genre pictures of the 70s and 80s. Under the violent coating, this movie carries a lot of weight in its heart, as it creates a pastiche of nostalgic 80s homage. There are references to video games, cartoons, and the classic and unknown exploitation greats; this is a movie composed of rentals from the local video store. Unlike many homage-fuelled genre films, Hobo with a Shotgun takes its influences and creates a…

The random ass speech he gives to the babies is probably the best Rutger Hauer monologue ever put to film

Starring: The Wicked, Charming, Dutch Icon Rutger Hauer It was about time our own Rutger Hauer got to show off his great acting abilities in a role that made full use of his charm and zany nature rather than burying it someplace in a film. And yes, it’s true that this film, which many could deem self-indulgent and a bit too trashy, worked great for me, especially as a product of Grindhouse cinema. As Rodriguez’s contribution to that double feature, it captures much of the sleazy, over-the-top, exploitation Grindhouse atmosphere that made it so exciting and gruesomely amusing. There’s a lot of gore and dismemberment, a proto-Robotman is running amok, the doctors are all hung up in the hospital, and…

Initially a fake trailer made to promote Quintin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s “Grindhouse”, the makers of the trailer just decided that it would be a shame to just sit on this without making an actual movie, so they put together a full length feature film starring the legendary Rutger Hauer and it’s everything that a spawn of Grindhouse should be. This is an exploitation black comedy about the worst neighborhood in America which still seems better than parts of Detroit. Gangs run the town, the police are corrupt, crime is rampant, and people are attacked, raped, kidnapped, tortured, and murdered in the streets. Enter Rutger Hauer, our titular hobo who looks on in horror at all of the atrocities happening…

This was so much fun the first time I watched it. Second time too! Third time, not so much. I think I need to shelf this for a few years before I watch it again. See ya in a few years Hobo, I still appreciate you and I just want you to know: “It’s me, not you” ^Actual convo I had with my Bluray

Based on the fake Grindhouse trailer of the same name, Jason Eisener’s Hobo with a Shotgun takes the simple concept and wraps it around some generic story points – a corrupt crime riddled town, dirty cops, a maniac criminal running the show, a hooker with a heart of gold etc. This is all soaked in completely over the top ridiculous gore soaked violence, and we’ve also got Rutger Hauer as the grisled title character. It sets out to be a fun bloodbath and it pretty much hits the mark. The influences are clear from the opening credits (set to Liebesthema by Michael Holm) – it’s Tarantino and seventies grindhouse in general. Its fairly slow for the first half hour as…

HOBO STOPS BEGGING AND DEMANDS CHANGE “Put the knife away son. Or I’ll use it to cut welfare checks from your rotten skin.” The city is in disarray. Gangs and violent criminals roam the streets stealing, abusing, and killing. Homelessness is everywhere. A hobo hops off a freight train and stumbles into this city. After encountering some of the criminal elements and a corrupt police force he snaps. Someone needs to bring justice to this place and this hobo and his shotgun just might be the ones to do it. I hadn’t watched something ridiculous in awhile and this has the great Rutger Hauer in it, so I figured why not? I had no idea that by the time the…

Shit dialogue but the hobo was okay I guess and I liked the shotgun part too took like 40 minutes for him to get the shotgun and they spend too much time on exposition for characters I could not care less about this movie can go pick up rocks

The dialogue is over the top to maybe too high of a degree. Comes off a bit silly. Some cool kills and funny kills. Meh.

This movie just rules. I don’t have any thing to say critically tbh. It’s just awesome with its style and the main lead. But also the world the movies creates is also terrifying. Just awesome stuff all around really. This movie also rules on the VHS format as well. It’s add on to the style of this film I personally think.

“live you fuckin’ whore!” At no point could i have predicted where this would go. 1.5/10 but a 9/10 for creativity.
-
Z
The story in this film is actually quite good, but the pacing is way too rushed, making the character dynamics feel forced. Additionally, the casting for the villain’s two sons feels out of place they come across as stiff, naive, and far too clean for such a gritty city. That being said, I really appreciate the film’s commitment to the exploitation film style

“HOBO STOPS BEGGING, DEMANDS CHANGE.” FILMED IN MY PROVINCE! 🇨🇦 Remember the fake trailers that were played before the GRINDHOUSE Double Feature in 2007? There was also a contest for filmmakers to create a trailer for a fake movie. Jason Eisener submitted an entry called HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN about a crime fighting hobo & ended up winning! His trailer was added in with the rest of the fake trailers and shown in theatres across Canada. 4 years later, it became an actual…

Standing tall among the modern exploitation revival spawned by the Grindhouse project, Jason Eisener’s film operates as a surprisingly potent fable of class warfare. Disguised as a hyper-violent homage to 70s drive-in cinema and Italian B-movie exploitation, Hobo with a Shotgun uses its oversaturated aesthetic to deliver a bitter critique of systemic corruption and poverty. Anchoring the chaos is a legendary, deeply empathetic performance by Rutger Hauer, elevating the film far beyond mere nostalgic splatter.

The oversaturation in this really hurt my head but it’s my own fault for deciding to watch it.

It’s like if Terrifier was a 70s action movie. It definitely tries to look the part but often comes off more as a poorly understood parody than anything else. But without a good sense of humor. It’s like it straddles the line between parody and homage but only the worst parts of both. Not really sure the story even needs discussed. It’s pretty much just a hodge podge of revenge movie and exploitation but only in terms of violence and…

This movie is ridiculous and it’s a complete blast by a legend of an actor. Over the top everything, good antagonists, badass Rutger with a shotgun protecting a girl that ends with the 2 dudes shooting each other and fading to black. Lots of fun. Ridiculous. Stupid amounts of fun. Feels like a movie from the 80s. Great combo of exploitation and gore and cheesy dialogue.

This might be the OUTRIGHT best Neo-exploitation film. It flips a lot of it’s obvious Death Wish inspiration in a way we feel genuinely makes it better than those films. It’s whole themes and feelings towards the homeless and their treatment is a real “I know people who use subtext and they’re all cowards” sorta shit and the film rules for it Everyone here is great, but the late Rutger Hauer might have a performance that almost tops his performance…

Modern day grindhouse at its finest! A brutally gory and bonkers explotation flick about a hobo with a shotgun cleaning the sheets in a crime ridden city worst than Gotham one bullet at a time! Mob bosses chopping heads off with barbed wire and manhole covers to literally flamethrower a school bus full of children, this city nobody is save. There’s even these terminator style hitman called the plague that literally have a harpoon noose weapon to hang their victims in seconds! Gore aplenty in this wild flick.

Not fun for the whole family, this is exactly what I want from an over the top film like this. Holy shit, I didn’t know what I expected, but I’m disappointed. Modern-day homages to 70’s and 80’s exploitation/grindhouse movies, like this one, Amer, and so on, always become caricatures of themselves. These movies always feel like they try too hard and never understand what made those original movies original in the first place. They definitely don’t feel like they’re made by genuine fans of movies of this “genre.” The tone is the biggest problem, it’s too winking and ironic, constantly…

Though it might be most well known for its exploitation plot and gore, what stuck with me the most was the dialogue. You could fast forward into any scene into this film and have a hillarious quote and that really drove the film. Though it is not the most thought provoking film (and based on the title, it doesn’t claim to be) it definitely checks all the boxes of a great grindhouse movie. Overall: 3.5/5 Quality: 3.5/5 Enjoyment: 3.5/5

Day 209 of the 365 Film Challenge 2026 This film does exactly what it says on the tin: it is about a hobo with a shotgun. It has a lot of crazy bloody action and cussing it goes extremely insane at times. The film looks cheap but it works in its favor due to it being part of grindhouse. The hobo himself is very much good to a fault and doesn’t deviate from that characteristic. Everyone is one note but…

Evil Daft Punk twins randomly appear out of nowhere halfway through (complete with their own rad theme song) as if they’ve stepped out of a completely different movie to save this trainwreck. - Synopsis
- A vigilante homeless man pulls into a new city and finds himself trapped in urban chaos, a city where crime rules and where the city's crime boss reigns. Seeing an urban landscape filled with armed robbers, corrupt cops, abused prostitutes and even a pedophile Santa, the Hobo goes about bringing justice to the city the best way he knows how - with a 20-gauge shotgun. Mayhem ensues when he tries to make things better for the future generation. Street justice will indeed prevail.
