It’s been said by others already, but the twist ending turns this dull torture-slasher into an outright ableist, homophobic slog. It spends a lot of time indulging in graphic violence, sexual exploitation, and absurd amounts of blood (really absurd, I mean, to the point where it feels cartoonish–the same complaint I have about Audition, where the violence would be intense and draining if not for the fact that it just becomes silly). Rarely has such a dense and uncomfortable atmosphere built up from the start as here. The sound design as well as disturbing visuals and the few but brutal scenes of violence intensified the effect immeasurably. “High Tension” does almost everything right for the longest time.. only to ruin everything with one twist.

Y’all are too hard on this. So many people whining about the twist not making sense. I admit, it threw me for a moment, the first time I watched this. However, I’ve since realized that the opening scene, in the hospital, explains away any problems with it. What you see throughout the film is the account of an unreliable narrator. There are even some scenes that appear to be metaphorical. You aren’t watching events unfold as they literally happened. I would explain further, but I’m trying not to spoil it for anyone who still hasn’t seen it. I’ve probably said too much already. At any rate, I’ve always loved this. Another great example of New French Extremity. Also, probably one of the most suspenseful slasher films since John Carpenter’s Halloween.

I loved it! I’m usually not a big fan of slashers because they tend to be repetitive, BUT I think this one has a lot of imagination. There’s some really great overly gory cornball kill scenes which is my jam.

Disliked. too many plot holes, lowkey trynna be fight club type of plotline. beside that, in my opinion, this was very predatory towards lesbians. pushing the agenda of lesbians being crazy, too devoted and selfish only wanting one thing. also the imagining yourself as a man, i understand the concept but it was very poorly formed. also making this very misandrist. considering the release year of this film, these things were already not a problem. so i think people in film industries really need to stop making lesbians look so bad. either psychotic, depressive, insufferable or dead.

You know, I was really enjoying this. I was. Constantly on edge and wondering what would happen next. Terrifying at times, but not as fucking terrifying as the horrendous plot twist. Genuinely, what were they thinking. It changes the entire film and makes most of it make no fucking sense. Leaves it riddled with plot holes just for a shock factor ending. Fucking irritating because I loved it, and they just had to ruin it. Nice job.

Voir un slasher français ça ajoute un petit truc spécial en fait. Le film laisse aucun espoir du début à la fin, c’est très cruel et violent sans jamais devenir grotesque, la réalisation est bonne et la bande son aussi (car y a Muse). This is one I last saw probably in 2003/04 on DVD. As I began re-watching there were bits and pieces that looked familiar but I didn’t remember much else… until the third act and twist ending. Then I remembered how much I hated it. The first half in the house and later the gas station were genuinely suspenseful but all of that was undermined by a terrible twist that made no sense. At the very least Cécile De France was good in the lead role. 2.25/5

Gahhhh I was having such a fun time with this until the ending. I felt a twist was coming but pinning everything on a mentally ill lesbian came across as though those characteristics were assigned to make us fear her and explain her actions, which is pretty wack!

I might have spoiled the twist for myself years ago and forgot about it; in any event I clocked it early on. Not the movie’s fault but it does contribute to the underwhelm I’m feeling. I respect the craft behind this kind of semi-realistic gore but it isn’t something I seek out for its own sake, and there isn’t much here for me beyond that. Mildly interesting subtext about internalized queer self-loathing but you have to project it onto the movie and I’m not sure the juice is worth the squeeze. Unexpectedly fitting watch in the wake of Camp Miasma, though. 100HorrorMoviesIn92Days, 20/100

Ame este peli como muy pocas de terror últimamente. Realmente logro espantarme y acelerar mi corazón con la escenas de Marie escondiéndose en la casa.
