   Toni Collette does *at least* three different things in this movie that might fuck you up forever. imagine a supernatural creep-fest like THE CONJURING, but told with the patience of THE WITCH, the emotional depth of THE BABADOOK, and the kind of scares that that James Wan would kill for. curious how it hangs together the second time around (scary movies tend to lose their edge, but a part of me suspects this one might get even better), but for now this feels like a *major* debut.     Me parece curioso que en el funeral define a su madre de una forma en la que se acaba convirtiendo en ella. Una persona está muy marcada por el entorno que le rodea y a veces aunque parezca que te alejas de lo que intentas evitar, te acabas convirtiendo precisamente en ello.

    The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist — Charles Baudelaire A lot of comparison to The Witch (2016) has been mentioned for how it’s portraying the disintegration of a family unit due to outside forces. I would compare this more to a greek tragedy (since it overtly mentioned Heracles’ tragedy in one of Peter’s classes).     En un género de terror donde los sustos fáciles abundan, es agradable encontrar una película que se enfoca mas en construir una historia que enganche al espectador que simplemente hacerlo brincar del asiento. Decir que sentí miedo viendo esto sería mentir, pero ciertas escenas si que me hicieron sentir algo no muy agradable. La parte final es simplemente alucinante, ese primer y último screamer esta construido de una manera espectacular. Y el final no te hace mas que decir “¿OK?”.

    Au premier visionnage, j’ai tellement transpiré des cuisses que je n’ai pas assez prêté attention au nombre de détails disséminés dans cette histoire. Ça serait snob de dire que c’est plus qu’un film d’horreur, parce qu’au fond même si l’écriture est riche, l’enjeu reste la peur.     Truly disturbing in a very unique way. A well crafted film, not built at all on cheap scares but on atmosphere and tension. You’ll definitely walk away feeling unsettled. Confusion at the end and some plot points being ‘too subtle’ stopped me giving 5* – but I appreciate the craft.

    The horror is top notch and Toni Collette’s performance is incredibly memorable. But the scariest part is the thought of living as Gabriel Byrne and having to endure life with a nutcase wife and son.

    Ive been told to watch this movie so many times and i did not expect it lol. I often hear it compared to Midsommar and I have to say this was much more enjoyable and made more sense. Some of it took some thought but then it all came together. I love the theories that the whole neighborhood was a part of it, that blew my mind a little.
