Synopsis

The men of Bravo Company are facing a battle that's all uphill… up Hamburger Hill. Fourteen war-weary soldiers are battling for a mud-covered mound of earth so named because it chews up soldiers like chopped meat. They are fighting for their country, their fellow soldiers and their lives. War is hell, but this is worse. Hamburger Hill tells it the way it was, the way it really was. It's a raw, gritty and totally unrelenting dramatic depiction of one of the fiercest battles of America's bloodiest war. This happened. Hamburger Hill - war at its worst, men at their best.

My points are for the acting and how lush it looked. Otherwise this might be the most boring fuckin’ war film I’ve ever seen!

6/10 which is possibly generous. For a war film full of explosions and gun fire I found this to be very boring. It also felt looooong. The biggest fail for me was the lazy character development of the main troop, whom we were meant to be attached to and rooting for. They are a good looking bunch but that is pretty much all they have going for them. Dylan McDermott, Steven Weber and Courtney B. Vance do a good job acting wise but I can’t say their characters were that likeable. Dylan was definitely lickable though. The only one that even vaguely resonated with me was Anthony Barrile as Vincent don’t call me alphabet Languilli. By the time the film…

All We Want To Do Is Come Home: The Springtime In Vietnam Project I always saw Hamburger Hill as a bit of a forgotten Vietnam film. It was released around the time when the likes of Platoon, Bat*21, Casualties Of War, Full Metal Jacket and a whole raft of less serious and more action based Vietnam films were being pumped out at a prolific rate. While many of those received widespread plaudits and good box office numbers, Hamburger Hill got left behind somewhat. It really shouldn’t have been. It doesn’t start awfully promisingly, it has to be said, with some dodgy dialogue and some even dodgier performances. But as the film settles down into actually having a purpose, the taking…

Since Quentin Tarantino is focusing on the year 1969 in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, it just so happened that I came across “Hamburger Hill”, the depiction of a battle for Hill 937 (that’s 937 meters tall) during the Vietnam War that occurred in May, 1969. It’s another of those war film about taking a hill or mountain with no strategic value. Overall, “Hamburger Hill” plays more like “Pork Chop Hill” than “Apocalypse Now” or “Platoon”. It’s either a film about how an interracial platoon of soldiers become a brotherhood interspersed with combat, or vice versa., but both parts work. The different backgrounds and racial prejudice form a real unique brotherhood as things proceed. Much of the acting is…

Hamburger Hill is a solid Vietnam War film that deserves more recognition than it gets. The acting is strong, the visuals are impressive, and the movie does a great job of portraying the brutality and emotional weight of war. Since it’s based on true events that took place in 1969, the story feels even more impactful and tragic. The film is packed with intense combat scenes, but it also gives enough attention to the soldiers themselves, which adds a lot of emotional depth throughout the movie. While I wouldn’t consider it one of the very best Vietnam War films ever made, it’s still definitely worth watching. Unfortunately, the film was overshadowed by movies like Full Metal Jacket and Platoon that…

Don Cheadle stealed the show by putting on a pretty good performance. Dylan McDermott is also pretty good in that. This film is good with gritty war action and some quite intense moments

A criminally underrated and under-appreciated Vietnam War drama that focuses on the men of a platoon of 101st Airborne Division soldiers who fought and died on the harrowing high ground of Ap Bia Mountain, otherwise known as the eponymous Hamburger Hill, this quite excellent and tragically realistic tale is quite frankly one of the best, if not the best, Vietnam War films ever made. 400TH REVIEW!!!!

Hamburger Hill has a lot of strengths but also a lot of weaknesses. On balance it’s an effective action film, and a good Vietnam war film, but definitely not on the level of its peers such as Platoon or Apocalypse Now. What made Hamburger Hill enjoyable was its intense combat sequences broken up by more sincere moments of character building and emotional depth. It takes a while to get into a nice rhythm but once it does it keeps a balanced pace and tonal balance through to the end. It also wasn’t afraid to tackle some of the trickier subjects of the Vietnam war, such as racial and class tensions among soldiers. More could always be done in terms of…

Hamburger Hill is the forgotten Vietnam film from the 80s, when movies like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and even Casualties of War got most of the attention. This was my first watch, and I’m glad I finally caught up with it. Hamburger Hill doesn’t shy away from the brutality of war, and the gore makes us feel the weight of the deaths. The black men in the platoon frankly discuss fighting for a nation that oppresses them back home. Even though the platoon has a clear mission-take Hamburger Hill-the seemingly endless attempts to do so result in frustration and significant casualties. There’s a fairly stacked cast, including Dylan McDermott, Courtney B. Vance, and Don Cheadle. Steven Weber’s over-the-top, annoying Southern accent thankfully dissipates in the second half of the film. While not everything in Hamburger Hill has aged well, it is a visceral experience that reminds us of the cost of war (at least on America’s side).

The film really revolves around just one thing: a group of American soldiers trying to take a heavily defended hill. And this is portrayed in a very raw way, without too much fuss. It’s not an over-the-top heroic tale, but mainly features lots of gunfire, mud, explosions and soldiers trying time and time again to reach that bloody hill. It may not be the most profound Vietnam film, but this time round I didn’t mind that at all. I didn’t…

History through film class potential movie candidate. Seems very poignant in its messaging about the Vietnam War. Could be very good to have the conversations of soldier perspectives. Makes them the victims and survivors of what seems to be a needless battle. As for a high school class may be hard with the brutality and sexuality of a lot of machismo soldier talk around sexworkers. May skip those parts.

pretty realistic depiction of what the war was not my ultimate favorite but was still super good and really devastating at certain points. the poem at the end really got me. i liked that they touched on the way the soldiers were treated when they went home. i think a lot of times people kind of forget how poorly received the soldiers coming home were. heartbreaking to think about honestly.

This feels like a very John Irvin movie. Well put together by a very competent film maker but lacking in the flair required to stand out from the pack. There were a lot of pieces of media put out in this window of time 15 to 20 years post the Vietnam war. This is one of them

If you are able, save them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.

This is somehow one of the lesser-ranked Vietnam War movies, which I really don’t get. Sure its not as flashy as other ones; sure, it doesn’t have iconic moments. What it does have, though, is an accurate depiction of Vietnam-era warfare. The waiting, the tension between black and white soldiers, and the brutality of a war that defined a generation.

A number of Vietnam War movies were made in the 1980s. This is one of them. Not one of the best, however. It’s well made but lacks any major star power. Still, it has its merits and in the end is fairly solid.

A low rent Platoon and I’m not even a big fan of Platoon to begin with. I lost interest after the first act when they set up all of the characters. The action started and I found myself not really caring about any of them. Admittedly, after this I started making dinner while the movie was still playing. I peaked in every now and then and the only things happening were action or the characters having pseudo-intellectual conversations. I didn’t care for it.

A pretty grimy and brutal thing, Hamburger Hill is like the little brother of the Vietnam film greats. It doesn’t have all the flash or the gravitas that its bigger brothers have, and it doesn’t get all the attention, but what it does have is something scrappy that keeps its head up. The soldier as an entity, made into a casualty of war, is something this movie handles very well. The death and destruction feel utterly pointless and by the…
