And most importantly, André De Shields… (And an update: I spoke to Reeve Carney, Eva Noblezada and Amber Gray for Letterboxd, about all things Hadestown including De Shields’ mythic presence.)

Orpheus always looks back because his love for her necessitates that he’ll always look back

All along, the villain of the story was never Hades or the fates. Eurydice didn’t trust Orpheus to finish the song in time. Hades didn’t trust Persephone to always return to him. Orpheus didn’t trust Eurydice enough to believe her hunger had changed. The villain here is the doubt we hold in our hearts. “It’s a tragedy… It’s a sad song… but we sing it anyway.” We sing the song knowing one day the ending will change. Gosh I love theater.

Normalise officially filming theatre and distributing it in cinemas. Theatre deserves to be preserved and accessible to people who don’t live in theatre-cities and/or can’t afford the tickets to see the shows live.

Genuinely one of the best musicals out there, Hadestown has a very special place in my heat it always gets to me every time I watched it. However hearing the cyclops screaming as im crying to epic III was not something i expected

Orpheus is the definition of not being the brightest bulb in the box, even though it’s a Greek myth, the guy really pisses me off. Hades sounds like the typical voiceover in those “Y/N” videos, and the CEO made me feel harassed every time he sang; the Fates are peak, and the rest was peak.

i was rapt, i was sat, i cried

Wowza, went in relatively blind. Generally I had been filled in about the Orpheus/Persephone relevance and some general aesthetics but NOT MUCH. But, I have you know it’s one of the rare #noskips musical. I am so giddy to have musical theatre flowing through my veins again. It’s so good, such a great song. Kind of the closest thing we have to southern gothic rusty bioshock the musical. • I have a soft spot for the 1930s and the dystopian genre because they align so perfectly in art to stage and play out an abstraction of true life.

“wait for me…” what a gorgeous pro-shot. as someone who rarely sees things when they are on broadway, i such am big proponent of pro-shots. the quality of this was delicious. the sound quality, the actor’s acting as if no time had passed, the lighting, the camera movements. very well done. i wasnt a huge fan of the overall story as it the eurydice and orpheus story has been done to death, not to mention the pacing was way off. but the music was so ear-worm and i love that i know it now.
-
E
Incredible pro shot!

Easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given. This musical is a masterpiece. This is a tragic love story beautifully written. I was familiar with the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, and although I knew how it’d end, I cried so hard in the theater. I knew from the opening song that it was going to be incredible. THE TALENT!!!!!!!! Every actor had a unique and incredible voice. The score was perfect. I loved the jazzy songs and LOVE the trombone player.…

Hadestown: The Musical (2026) dir. Brett Sullivan [4.5] Really enjoyed this, at times fantastic in terms of individual as well as choral-group singing and choreography and musical accompaniment, and the succession of set pieces move the story along fairly well—an old sad story, to paraphrase Hermes, played wonderfully by André de Shields, with strong at times light high register voice of Reeve Carney as Orpheus, and solid-strong performances by Eva Noblezada (Eurydice) and Amber Gray (Persephone), with Patrick Page’s deep…

ok first of i love hadestown second off i hate the idea of a proshot but i get why they exist i just hate that like the entire staging and blocking of a live show allows the audience to choose where to look and then a proshot makes that decision for you

I get euridyice at first for not falling inlove with a man singing at you with a guitar

Wow, this show was so so amazing!! I absolutely loved every single second of it, I was so locked in the second it started playing. I absolutely adore this show, I think it’s phenomenal and I’m so glad it’s getting some of the appreciation it deserves. Eva, Reeve, Patrick, André, Amber, and everyone else in this cast is so wildly talented it’s actually insane, and I love them so much. A coworker of mine told me he got to see…

I went to the movies this week, and what I saw was not a movie but a Broadway play. When I watched this in theaters, I knew I was watching a Broadway play on screen, but for some reason, I got irritated. I didn’t like that Hermes, who we meet first, was interacting with the audience. But once I understood how this play was directed and that it was part of the story, I got into it. My father, however,…

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH BEST MUSICAL OF ALL TIME. NO DEBATE. Reeve and Eva are incredible broadway actors and play these roles so well. I never got to see them when the play first came out, seeing it now has made me so happy.

Watched a Jack Wolfe slime tutorial of this. This musical has perhaps taken over my life. Listened to it last night while playing Stardew Valley. Did that every day for a week or two before moving back into college. GOD this musical is so good, I’m not entirely sure humanity deserves it (or Jack Wolfe. GOD Jack Wolfe is so talented)

A foundational text for me as my most favorite musical, I’m so happy to finally have the chance to see it. Only having listened to various cast albums hundreds of times, it’s brought so much meaning to my life as I’ve fallen in love with this story and music again and again and again. Taking this moment to shout out Epic III from the original cast album, which is one of the best written songs of all time and gets me in my feels every time. Truly as perfect as a musical theatre song can get.

I had never seen Hadestown before this or listened to any of it. I really loved the New Orleans energy and the band was sooo good. (You know I love an upright bass.) The guy who plays Orpheus was slightly irking me… but maybe that’s just how Orpheus is supposed to be. Otherwise everyone had an amazing performance, I especially loved Persephone. This was really well shot but I would love to see it live someday!

Watched at the Regal Waterford Lakes theater. A pixel in the middle of the screen was stuck in green. Loved the movie dispite this. During the song Chant I love how they decided to tilt the wideshot up and reveal the lighting rig during the part about laying a power grid and electrifying.

Dear Alison, I was actually really excited for this because I thought the concept and style of musical seemed great but honestly I hated it so much. I think I mostly disliked the lead actor so maybe there’s hope in another version? When he first started singing the song of the gods or whatever I thought it was meant to be a joke about how horrible the unfinished version was but that was actually the song and I think we were cooked from there.
-

it was really immersive when orpheus sang and the walls moved. because at the exact same time the entire room around me collapsed when odysseus was getting his shit rocked in the theater next door

i’ve been keeping tabs on the proshot since it got announced and i was BUZZING with excitement ready to go see it in theaters. and let me tell you. it was MAGICALLLLL. getting to see everything in crystal clear detail and getting to notice things i would’ve never gotten to see otherwise (patrick page’s eyes filling with tears, andré de shields clinking his cup with an audience member at the end, literally EVERY single thing amber gray did. every. single.…

Great music. Eva Noblezada was perfect. Reece carney pissed me off. Bros voice. Ughhhh couldn’t get past it.

Someone get Mafuyu Sato and Orpheus in the recording studio right NOW

would give five stars just for the way André De Shields says “on the road to hell there was a railroad… car”

It was almost as good as seeing it live! Loved the actors when it was live whoch is the only reason it wasnt my favorite!
-

It’s a sad song but we’ll sing it again. the cylindrical cycle of tragedy. the stages of grief and how it changes a person, both the one who lived and the one who died.
