Went and caught this at the New Beverly in 35mm. So glad I saw this in a theater with people, there’s such a lovely energy to a crowd enjoying this movie that makes it even better. Yes, people are going to compare this movie to John Wick– and they should– but the best sequence in this movie IMO is a great hospital fight sequence that feels straight out of Shoot ‘Em Up, which is fitting given that both this movie and that one are so heavily influenced by Chuck Jones. That’s the Giamatti effect, baby! More cartoon action sequences I say!

I’ve seen Karen Gillan give good performances but she was terrible here. She’s no Uma Thurman, Geena Davis or Charlize Theron, someone who can sell the lead role of a serious, cold-blooded assassin, making the audience interested in who they are playing with their charisma. She managed that in supporting turn as Nebula but here she has zero presence and the dreadful, generic script is to be blamed just as much as her seemingly lacking any interest in her own performance. The other actresses in this movie would be far better leads but of course since they are over 40 years old they are handed supporting scraps to work with. There’s a section mid-film where Karen Gillan has a gun and knife taped to her paralyzed arms, swinging them around to fight a trio of hobbled goons, all of them awkwardly trying to kill eachother. Mamma mia che storia piatta e banale, personaggi vuotissimi tutti, sembra un film fatto per includere le donne nei film d’azione ma senza nessuno studio, mettendo semplicemente 4 donne superbone al posto degli uomini e NON FUNZIONA. Finale aperto che però non ti dà neanche spazio per immaginare quello che potrebbe essere; l’unico possibile futuro è veramente cliché e noioso. Non commentiamo i combattimenti perché veramente c’è da piangere… Bocciato per me, mi dispiace. L’unica cosa che si salva è l’ambientazione ma anche i colori scelti tutti fluo e sparati a mille terribili.

Fun movie! The action sequences were great and I loved how extreme the colors were throughout the movie. The dialogue fell into a lot of stereotypical traps, but it was entertaining.

Paul Giamatti could have had every role Steve Buscemi had from Fargo to Boardwalk Empire if he’d only gotten a better agent. Unfortunately, the cards played out differently for him, and for the last few decades I’ve had to regularly watch him be an amazing actor in massive pieces of shit like this movie.

Pretty decent movie overall. I really liked the character change of heart and redemption theme that went along really well with the overall mission of the movie and the protagonist. Good action sequences and acting, and the lighting and tonality was different and unique

A young female assassin becomes the unwitting guardian to a younger girl, and turns to three older mentors for support (and weapons). If you ever watched John Wick and thought to yourself, I wish I could see older women killing people instead, boy, do I have a film for you! Frankly, the world could use more female assassin films. I do think they could have allowed Angela Bassett or Michelle Yeoh more leeway to dive deeper into their characters, but it also isn’t really what this film is about? Idk.

Super fun movie with Karen Gillan as an assassin well as Lena Headey as her mother and Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Carla Gugino as a group of fellow female female assassins trying to protect a little girl who is a survivor of a deal gone wrong. Great action sequences with equal amounts of gore and all of these women being badasses.

Finally got around to watch this! What a cast, what a technical team (pre – production – post) ; a total dream! I’m still not sure about Gillan, everybody danced around her. Like, I can’t see her character I just see Karen. Stealing her scenes left and right. But honestly it’s the same thing with Keanu Reeves as John Wick which I’m guessing it’s what they were going for. Quite an excellent take on mother-daughter relationships. Crime fiction with a star-studded cast (hello MILFs) and the library that hosts an entire weapons armory reminds me of A Series of Unfortunate Events. The 80s and retrofuturistic aesthetics throughout the film speak to me. Big fan.

Well that was vastly more entertaining than I thought it’d be after seeing some reviews here. It’s a very flash, oftentimes comedic actionovie, with some genuinely quite inventive fight and chase scenes throughout. Mostly a standard action flick ,but I will give them credit for being fun and campy and not taking themselves too seriously. I liked the cast a lot , Lena Heady is always a welcome sight and everyone else from Angela Bassett to Ralph Ineson being in this is insane. It has a good sense of style and action is both really funny and really violent. Again it doesn’t really break the mold of what I expect from this kind of movie and the music bugged be in some moments , but as they say there’s nothing wrong with a fun 3 star flick.
