“Gunfight at the OK Corral” boasts all the bluster of the old west and none of the tragedy. The approach is fine for your standard B-level entry in the genre – but with the likes of Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster involved, there should be at least a speck of melancholia amidst the dust kicked up by desert shootouts. There are no poor talents involved in director John Sturges’ interpretation of the most overblown of Western legends. Only poor casting. Opting for Douglas as the doomed Doc Holliday might be just about the most misguided choice in the canon of the genre. Victor Mature and Val Kilmer played the part of the dying dentist/gunfighter with all the poetic romanticism of…

Maybe it’s just me being ignorant but I don’t understand why John Sturges isn’t more widely regarded as one of the greatest western directors of all time. It could be that I’ve just missed all the plaudits of his work but I suspect probably not. I did read a couple of bits and pieces about his career that suggested that he lacked the outright iconic film that may have made his career more visible overall. I can’t actually argue with that. As much as I would push the argument that Bad Day At Black Rock was one of the greatest films of the 1950s and that it should have been the iconic film it never became, I know that it…

“Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” is a 1957 western directed by John Sturges. The film is a romanticized version of the events that took place within Tombstone, Arizona in 1881. Featuring a notorious gun battle between Wyatt Earp, his brothers, and Doc Holiday versus the Clantons and McLaurys, it’s one of the major events told in something of a folklorist stance within the mythos of the wild west. Much of this was due to famous lawman Wyatt Earp living to something of an old age, residing his end days in Los Angeles, California, and passing on his tales to the right personalities just before his passing. As a result, Earp’s and Holiday’s legacy really birthed them into being two adventure…

This one’s going out for Dennis Hopper, born May 17, 1936. Gunfight at the OK Corral is a typical John Sturges joint: high levels of testosterone, men doing what men have to do, a touch of homoeroticism, mostly good performances, occasionally brilliant mise-en-scene, a mythopoeic treatment of its subject, a little talky, a little slow, a little long. The best thing about the film is the towering movie-star performances from Burt Lancaster and, especially, Kirk Douglas. The film, like all treatments of this subject, may not be historically accurate, but when Burt and Kirk are on the job, who cares? One of the joys of 50s Westerns is that most are loaded with excellent character actors, and as a bonus…

There doesn’t seem to be that many Western fans here on LB, either that or I’m following the wrong people? It’s a genre that I grew up with, with my grandparents schooling me in all the old black and white films from Stagecoach to They Died With Their Boots On. They loved Wayne, they loved Errol Flynn’s Western’s too, but they also introduced me to James Stewart, Jack Palance, Audie Murphy, Randolph Scott, Gary Cooper and a host of others. It was only later in life that I experienced Peckinpah’s West and Sergio Leone’s Spanish filmed Spaghetti Westerns that helped make Eastwood a household name, and although I like the older films, the revisionist Westerns like Jeremiah Johnson, The Outlaw…

RESEÑA EN ESPAÑOL AQUI FIGHT! – THE TWO STURGES John Sturges returns to the Western genre with his take on the legendary Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, backed by a really good cast and some genuinely stunning cinematography. The film makes excellent use of the VistaVision format, giving everything a grand sense of scale that perfectly suits the mythic nature of the story. Narratively, there’s a lot of interesting material here, and for the most part the film does a solid job bringing it to life. That said, its slow-burn approach and lengthy runtime do work against it at times. Had it been a little tighter and trimmed down, I think it would have landed even better. One thing that…

It’s apparent almost from the opening Frankie Laine sung title song that this John Sturges directed adaptation of the legendary Gunfight at the O.K. Corral aspires to be the most ostentatious interpretation of the events. Written by Leon Uris with substantial sprinkles of dramatic license, it has asserted itself to be one of the most popular interpretations over the years. It accounts Arizona City Marshal Wyatt Earp and gambler and gunfighter Doc Holliday solidifying an unlikely partnership along with preparing the ground for a conclusive showdown with a group of outlaws known as the Clanton gang. A confrontation which has gone down as one of the most famous shootouts in the annals of the American wild west. Charles Lang’s cinematography…

last time i saw gunfight i made the major error of trying to compare it to john ford’s my darling clementine, which isn’t just a great western but one of the all-time greatest films, a hard pedigree to match especially for a film which doesn’t try at all to do the same thing: this is a picture that veers away from sweeping fordian romance and embodies a more masculine acidic landscape of the west. john sturges’ version of the wyatt earp mythos is interestingly low-key, building the suspense of the famous gunfight brick-by-brick with perfect blocking of its central performers — everyone here is worried about breaking their code, whether it’s doc holiday’s gentlemanly honor or wyatt earp’s lawbook, and…

[Vistavision 35mm] Sturges’ filmmaking is incredibly economical. He lets the scene breath with barely any cutting, just great blocking and patience with each scene. I wish there was a bit more breathing room for the town and the supporting characters but it was a fun ride. The Vistavision print looked incredible, such fantastic colors even though the sound would pop randomly a few times.

Brandon introduced me to Tombstone on home video not long after it had been at the theater, telling me how cool it was, and I was immediately impressed by it. Introduced by Dr. Peter Weller, who loves this movie more than I’ve ever loved any movie. Honored to join him for what he claimed was his 102nd viewing of Gunfight at the OK Corral, which he was saving until he could watch it again with his son. 🥲 4D experience watching Doc Holliday die of tuberculosis on screen while all the old people in the audience were hacking coughing for two hours.

VistaVision at the David Geffen Theater Still don’t think this really hangs together as a narrative but watching a beautiful print on a big screen will bump any film up a star, especially a film this good looking. Kirk Douglas is terrific here and against my better judgment, I’ve watched so many Burt Lancaster movies I’m starting to like him too, despite his lack of acting ability and his ghoulish visage. He looks like an undertaker in this movie. Scary.

Much like death, violence is an unforgiving and undiscerning equalizer. You’re all gunfighters in this country. This movie rocks. Every frame a painting. Everyone is batting 100 but it was cool to see the difference in naturalism between Hopper and his predecessors. Felt like the handing off of the torch. So many banger one liners I want another watch to write them all down. A really careful, nuanced, and compelling script in general. Val and Kirk forever.

Crazy to make this only ten years after John Ford’s version, sadly this Sturgis film feels 20 years older than My Darling Clementine. It feels like it thinks it’s an epic and I guess it is a classic American story but the way it’s told is not deserving of this self imposed importance. Just very long shots and letting actors chew way too much scenery and too much shoe leather. The real highlight is Kirk Douglas as Doc Holiday, he’s…

So Doc Holliday is just one of the all-time great parts? Kirk Douglas is aces! Lancaster plays Earp like a brilliant slab of all American beef. It’s super cool to see a vintage VistaVision print since all the scratches and warps are horizontal. Kind of a neat effect.

Presented in the greatest format ever invented: VistaVision. Great looking movie. I wish there were more build to the slow build, but instead it takes frequent derivations into subplots… which aren’t nearly as interesting as what Hawks would find 2 years later in Rio Bravo. The result is something of a sleepy melodrama with a pretty righteous gunfight, which Sturges or the studio rightfully understood was the main event. The movie is either 30 minutes too long or an hour…

Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, enough said! Oh, and a young Dennis Hopper. Oh, also saw this on Vistavision so that was cool. “Boot Hill, Boot Hill, So Cold, So Still” is going to be stuck in my head for a bit. There are few visual contrasts more pleasing than golden prairie grass against the wide blue sky, and it’s especially stunning in 8-perf VistaVision, as Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was presented tonight at L.A.’s Academy Museum. It’s the format—rarely ever exhibited, even at its inception—that drew me out tonight more than the film itself. Gunfight is a perfectly good western—episodic for a while until it’s not, with occasionally precious dialogue, and a titular climactic gunfight that doesn’t disappoint, although it’s…

Presented in Vistavision Sturges was simply incredible at constructing these types of big masculine sagas and the titular set-piece is amongst one of his best. But what really makes this one stand apart is how sincerely and intensely he’s dialed into the melodrama. He has two of the best and most dynamic dramatic stars of the time playing two men who can’t wrap their head around devotions to anyone but each other. It’s tragic, it’s fun, it’s exciting, and it’s so stupidly gorgeous to look at. The Vistavision print looked clearer than 4k digital projection.

Introduction by Peter Weller Insanely fucking well-staged. Just a joy to look at in every scene due to how much of a presence the physicality of each location carries. I’m not too into the aesthetics of the American western nor even the stories they tell, but they really were old Hollywood at the pinnacle of their craft. Putting the visual stuff aside, it’s fun! A solid narrative with some deliciously dubious protagonists. I was hoping VistaVision would give me that incredible crisp image I got when watching OBAA in the format, but that didn’t seem to happen sadly.

Got to see this in Vistavision with a great energetic intro by Peter Weller. I love me some westerns, and while my sensibilities lie mostly within the 70s revisionism, there is something about a classic western from the 50s that almost manages to transport me in time. *Vistavision presentation at the Academy Theater with an introduction by Dr. Peter Weller* Peter Weller said this was his favorite movie of all time, and that he has counted every time he has seen it, and this was his 102nd (I think). My first film to watch in Vista Vision. Beautifully vivid colors, shot by Charles Lang. The VistaVision look reminded me of my View-Master viewfinder as a kid. That made images seem to come to life. A competent Western version of a commonly told tale of Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) and Doc Holliday (Kirk Douglas) showdown in Tombstone. Directed by John Sturges, with solid performances by Lancaster and Douglas. Leisurely paced and a bit long to get to the exciting…
-

Sturges’s Earp/Doc western follows the “hangout” RIO BRAVO structure and traces the friendship between Lancaster’s stoic lawman and Douglas’ hedonistic abusive drunk gambler. The supporting cast is absolutely loaded, but it’s John Ireland as Doc’s foil who really grabs your attention in every scene he’s in. Sturges directs the hell out of this, especially the finale, and he lets Douglas and Lancaster bounce off each other in some phenomenal dialogue sequences. Outside of Frank Perry’s subversive DOC this is probably my favorite Earp/Doc movie. Fantastic experience seeing this projected in VistaVision at the Academy Museum tonight.

I enjoyed Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, even though it did not completely win me over. The film has a classic Western atmosphere, with impressive landscapes, strong characters, and a story that kept me interested from beginning to end. Kind of a decent western. Really the big deal is Kirk Douglas as Doc Holiday and everything else is somewhat cliche. But atleast more action than ALOT of the 1001 movies westerns, which tend to be more of some drama movie than westerns with gunfights, booze and romance.

It goes without saying that Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster have fantastic chemistry. Every scene they share is excellent, and there’s a poignancy to their final parting that can be found nowhere else in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral; each, it’s obvious, wants to say more to the other. But each, it’s equally obvious, is incapable of putting aside his stoicism and his ironic, self-protective barbs. More than any gory gunfight, this is the true and tragic cost of the…

I haven’t seen a film score plummet this severely in a long time. The first half was phenomenal. It was almost a romance movie between these two men; a will they-won’t they buddy story that built slowly but deliberately. Gunfight at the O.K. Corral was a hugely influential western, helping pave the way for the bigger, more expansive westerns of the 1960s. Its popularity at the time was enormous, and the pairing of Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday resulted in undeniable chemistry between the two stars. Director John Sturgess was shrewd enough not to turn them into a conventional team, but instead portrayed them as two individuals with contrasting moral outlooks whom fate…

Okay, so this occurred to me while young Dennis Hopper was on screen: Henry Fonda played Wyatt Earp in My Darling Clementine, and years later, Hopper, who plays one of the Clantons in Gunfight at the O.K. As a movie it is entertaining, but it doesn’t live up to the heights of Tombstone and My Darling Clementine. Most of that is due to lackluster performances from Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. It’s not just because they are miscasted, They have been in a movie where both of them were out of type and still were amazing (Seven Days In May). It’s a failure for them to garner any sympathy from me. Also the women “characters” if you can call them that are awful.

Unfortunately, this didn’t quite work for me. It suffers from some of the problems I had with The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance… without Lee Marvin’s magnetic and scene-stealing turn as the sneering villain. This like Ford’s film seems to suffer when the big stars are clearly vying for the spotlight. The momentum of the narrative is constantly interrupted and I couldn’t help thinking that the two leads had to have some sort of equal screen time arrangement, regardless of…

Gotta love a 50’s western, somehow they really make you feel like it’s the real thing. Of course Kirk Douglas is phenomenal as always and I really liked Burt Lancasters Wyatt Earp. One thing that really stood out was how colorful and vibrant this whole film looked, everyone’s outfits really popped too. So sad how a movie from 1957 absolutely outmatched most films made today in color grading and palette, really makes modern films look dull and dead.

I’m not really a “powerscaler,” but the fastest gun in the west knowing he is certainly doomed against 3 men is just crazy to me. Nowadays they’d have to be well trained gunmen for it to be even a close fight. Like John Wick can take on dozens or hundreds of people if he wants, but Doc Holiday can’t do 3? Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (Rental) This 1957 western is perfectly fine (OK even), but its not My Darling Clementine. Kirk Douglas is the best thing in this and his Doc Holiday is fun take on the character. The score and song are dreadful. It is fun to see Dennis Hopper in a really early role. Tuberculosis – who wore it better? Kirk Douglas? Or Val Kilmer*? The kind of Hollywood movie I think of when I hear the word Western. Two legends of old Holllywood – lawman Burt Lancaster and gambling romantic Kirk Douglas – joining together to defeat a common enemy. I wish Burt Lancaster was doing a little more, he has good moments like the scenes with Dennis Hopper, but overall lacks any sort of attitude for a lot of it. Kirk Douglas’ Doc Holliday works much better but is overshadowed by the Val Kilmer performance that would come decades later. Titular gunfight also slightly underdelivers.

This version of the O.K. Corral story seemed like a nice bridge between the Ford version and the Kurt Russell version, but still great thanks to its two big leads in Lancaster and Douglas, and a great score and song by Dimitri Tiomkin, Ned Washington, and Frankie Laine. I’ve had it stuck in my head since finishing the movie.

This is one of those flicks that kind of runs on and on until it finally gets good right at the end, and then it’s over. The performances and dialogue are tight, but the titular moment we’re all waiting for takes an hour and 45 minutes to get there.

“If I’m going to die, at least let me die with the only friend I’ve ever had!” This movie is pretty good, if a tad bit too long. The acting and characters are good and the gunfighting is really good. There is a about 20 minutes that could have been cut out and wouldn’t affect anything. That part was just really boring. Overall it is a pretty good movie, 7/10.

The story of Wyatt Earp is probably the most enduring “true” story of the old West. It has been made and remade into several films over the years beginning with a film called “Frontier Marshal”, apparently, back in 1939 starring Randolph Scott as the legendary lawman…though it wouldn’t surprise me if there was an even earlier film about the man that I just don’t know about. The most recent film that I am aware of is the 1994 biopic “Wyatt…

I liked Sturges’ Bad Day at Black Rock quite a bit recently, but unfortunately, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral turned out to be a rather joyless and by-the-book (or rather by-the-myth?) affair in comparison. I can’t find any issues with this from a technical perspective, and on paper it features a great cast with Burt Lancaster and, especially, Kirk Douglas. But somehow everybody feels really bored-out, and apart from the main characters, everyone else feels weirdly faceless, including the antagonist brothers. The shoot-out at the end makes up for the blandness a little bit but ultimately, this remains a well-made film that left me rather empty.

I enjoyed this slightly less than the previous Stuges-Douglas collab, but it’s still a genre classic. Banger jingle. Something does feel /off/ about this… Just kind of emotionally not quite /there/, I can’t put my finger on it. I think it makes sense, reading takes about Douglas being miscast — Doc should be a sympathetic, sensitive guy. He’s got insane chem with Lancaster, but they’re a little too similar, too macho to fit this archetype of polar opposites cobbling together a friendship through a desperate entanglement of circumstances. Huh. Fuck Kirk Douglas, also

im very split on this. equal parts misogynist as it is feminist. well, maybe not equal.. definitely not equal, but it certainly has some progressive tones that are worth a nod. all the interpersonal stuff is deeply engaging, especially thanks to great performances across the board – Lancaster and Douglas in particular, no surprise. final gunfight is disappointing & clunky and the story is ultimately unsatisfying. im impressed by how much of a cultural touchstone this has become. so many lines…

Very well shot, good color grading, some extremely physical performances that go a long way towards selling the gunfights. For the 50’s this was clearly ahead of its time, for me in 2026, it didn’t need to be 140 min long.

IMO, a really good studio movie! Skillfully shot, beautiful beautiful gowns, rich and detailed sets, lots of extras and background actors, such a fun theme song. A little too long, and 50s plaid is always so ugly to me, but c’est la vie. Douglas and Lancaster are elevating kinda flat versions of Wyatt and Doc here. Neither is my favorite portrayal of either character, but the relationship is interesting. Should have been more homoerotically charged, but we can’t have everything.…

Gunfight at the O.K. Corral is John Sturges’ take on an American myth and it’s one that clearly made its way into the popular consciousness at the time. It’s very weird watching this film as a Doctor Who fan as the serial The Gunfighters is directly inspired by many of Sturges’ directorial choices in this film. Watching it close to Ford’s take in My Darling Clementine also might be to this film’s detriment. Sturges doesn’t seem to want to say…

The gunfight only lasted a minute so I understand the need to tell the story before the shootout, but this movie probably goes back a little too far. The most intriguing aspect of the story starts with Earp’s arrival in Tombstone, but the movie takes over an hour to get there. It’s much more concerned with the friendship between Earp and Holliday, and Lancaster and Douglas are both pretty good in the roles. There’s a singing narrator that pops up every so often which helps put the story into legend, but also felt more and more silly every time it starts.

52 YEARS IN 52 WEEKS 2026 (1908-1959) PROGRESS: 50/52 YEAR: 1957 “Hold up your right hand. Do you solemnly swear to uphold… oh, this is ridiculous. You’re deputized. Grab some gear, I’ll get the horses.” One of many dramatizations of the legendary Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, this version is beautifully directed by John Sturges and photographed in glorious VistaVision. The expansive landscapes of the American West are breathtaking, giving the film an epic scope worthy of the legend it…

Solid leads from Lancaster and Douglas as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday carry the film through to the thrilling titular gunfight. Surely an old-fashioned western even in its day, but the climactic shootout features dynamic action and full-bodied stunt work that feels slightly ahead of its time. Dimitri Tiomkin’s score works well, though the title song hasn’t aged nearly as gracefully.

I like this film more than the consensus, though admittedly it is no My Darling Clementine (Tombstone is fine). It’s a bit long and Lancaster has been better elsewhere. But the framing, in VistaVision, is gorgeous with images that have depth and provide a worthy stage for these legendary characters. The American myths need a large format, I suppose.

excellent. one of the best Wyatt Earp / Doc Holliday films around. great performances from Burt Lancaster and my guy Kirk Douglas. love to see a young Dennis Hopper, aswell as a brief appearance from Lee Van Cleef. i love all the slightly different versions of Earp’s journey as a lawman and how the murder of his brother made him vengeful. the titular gunfight at the end is absolutely fantastic. the gunshots are loud and explosive. clearly an inspiration for The Wild Bunch. great movie. If I’m going to die, at least let me die with the only friend I’ve ever had!

Another case of excellent filmmaking and performances like Bad Day at Black Rock, but the melodramatic scenes were…boring. I mean the character showdowns between Doc and everyone was appealing, but with Wyatt (though Burt was excellent) he was only interesting when he was with Doc. The pace really slows down when we follow Wyatt and his brothers until the tension rises and we come closer to the gun battle at the end. I think I’m still going to continue watching John Sturges films because his use of blocking and camera placement/choreography is how I hope to direct my own films.

A hangout movie that ends with a shootout. None of the details really matter. Some bad guys show up at some point and the good guys–none of whom are fully good–saddle up to meet them in an abandoned part of town. Movies could do much worse than to use this exact template. I don’t have any context and won’t do the research, but this feels like it was meant to be a big deal at the time. Two giant stars…

John Sturges hasn’t exactly impress me in 4 of his movies I’ve seen, but this one was luckily a bit better than all of them. Both Lancaster and Douglas have had better roles than this, but they sure know how to make a movie entertaining.

Decent fight at the end and good representation of Dodge City and the events leading upto the gunfight. Felt a bit slow in places but overall good film.

I’m usually fairly ambivalent towards Kirk Douglas but he’s pretty damn magical in this picture. Never thought I’d say this but I’d put his Doc Holliday up there with Val Kilmer’s. Also, there’s a particular quirk of Westerns that I love: I really get a kick out of SUPER literal theme songs. Especially if the theme is repeated throughout the picture with lyrics updated to match the action. The Bad Guy just rolled into town halfway through the picture with trouble on his mind? Here’s a cute lil song about it. Update: DOCTOR MCCOY IS IN IT 😱.

If anything, this just makes My Darling Clementine even worse by comparison. This is now the third movie I’ve seen in the last year or so with Wyatt and Co., and while it’s not on Tombstone levels of excellence, it’s still very entertaining in its own right. This movie decides to take a different approach then either of the aforementioned films, instead spending the first 60% of the movie developing an enemies to lovers relationship for Wyatt and Doc Holliday,…

# 1001 films to see before you die Western ben chillos.

Gunfight at the O.K. Corral has good ingredients: camaraderie between an unlikely pair, fun saloon scenes and lively dialogue. The relationship between Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday is splendid. Nonetheless, I am not enthusiastic about the fact that the movie portrays no psychological ramifications for Wyatt Earp or his brothers after their decision to bypass the law to embark on a shootout.
