gave this a one initially but the ending is way too fucking funny for me to do that, absolutely love how they played house of the rising sun over footage of random people saying how john gotti was a fucking hero. pitbull is an auteur when it comes to playlists for gangster movies, he should soundtrack the irishman. also love how it ostensibly positions gotti as the antithesis of the government, like he’s a hero for resisting against them by doing absolutely nothing except selfishly hoarding money and killing random motherfuckers. love la resistance. also gotti narrates after his death?? is he omnipotent? gotti a fuckin ghost oh god

25/100 A.V. Club review, in which I couldn’t find room to list the many hilarious needle drops. My three favorites: • Gotti strutting out of court post-acquittal to “Walk Like an Egyptian.” • “House of the Rising Sun” over Gotti’s funeral procession. • The synth bassline on “West End Girls” kicking in when a car explodes. (You really have to see that last one—the whole intro plays while the car sits there onscreen, then the driver turns on the ignition, BOOM!, dum dum dum, da dum da dum.)

Started joking about this movie at a party so we put it on and had a blast shit talking it the whole time. And for that, I can give it exactly one star.

Until I was ten, my dad’s main source of income was from bartending, and for several years in that period he worked at a place in Downtown Brooklyn that was a brisk walk from the borough’s various courthouses. This is relevant for two reasons: the main one is a prize anecdote starring my dad’s friend and coworker Jimmy, wherein during a particularly busy day at the restaurant John Gotti and retinue came in seeking strong drink and a bite to eat, only to be told by Jimmy that there were no tables. “Well *make* a fuckin’ table,” one of Gotti’s companions said. “What do I look like, a fuckin’ carpenter?” Jimmy said, looking him dead in the eye. There was…

I kid you not, this movie opens with a nighttime shot of John Travolta looking out at the Manhattan bridge, turning to face the camera and going “New Yawk, da greatest city in da world.” It’s amazing, they accidentally made the Walk Hard of gangster movies. Connolly’s operating on so many levels of cliché and incompetence it genuinely becomes difficult to tell if this is utter dogshit or galaxy-brain irony. All of the scenes make ~sense~ in the larger vocabulary of gangster movies but there’s no work done to dramatize or contextualize them. What crimes do these people even do? This depicts the Gambino family like a country club that kills random people sometimes. Though, to be fair, this aspect…

In 10 years from now will YOU be able to say you saw Gotti in theaters!? Don’t miss the opportunity of a lifetime, motherfucker. This is one that needs to be seen to be believed. You haven’t actually lived until you’ve seen Gotti. Gotti is a film that cannot be given a star rating. I literally cannot rate this movie because I don’t know how to. I’ve thought about a rating for hours and I’ve concluded this film is unrateable. I don’t even know if “unrateable” is a real word, but I don’t care because Gotti. John Travolta Oscar talk? Why the fuck not? After all New York City is the greatest fucking city in the world. Soundtrack of the year? I think so! FOR CRYING OUT LOUD MR. WORLDWIDE HIMSELF SCORED THIS MOVIE! There are T H R E E Pitbull songs in Gotti, yes you heard that correctly. Fuck! Fucking. Gotti. Man. Fuck

There are exactly three interesting choices in “Gotti,” Kevin Connolly’s amateurish biopic about the late and legendary New York mobster, John Gotti. (Yes, E from “Entourage” directs movies. No, this isn’t the first one). The first comes at you right off the top: Inverting an exhausted trend, Connolly opens the movie with footage of the actual people in the story, rather than saving it for the closing credits as per usual. It’s a smart move, if only because John Travolta’s performance is hammy enough that we need hard evidence he’s playing a real person (he plays the Teflon Don like a cross between Ray Liotta and Alec Baldwin’s impression of Donald Trump). The second interesting choice is that some of…

What is this soundtrack Unfortunately very underwhelming and mediocre, the cinematography is nothing special and the script could use some work. ‘They took my tit and they put it on my face.’ Relatable.

Aye! Gabbaghoul badabing badaboom! Givem some friggin’ concrete shoes so he can sleep with da fishes! He’s a friggin’ rat! Pastrami with some ratatouille! Fuggitaboutit! That’s not me being racist. That’s the dialog of Gotti. That and defending a murderous crime lord, makes Gotti a confused and muddled mob movie. The Pitbull song in the end was garbage.

Wow just horrible the one with armad Asante is by far better, thought trobolots should not been gotti

The Pitbull songs playing out of the speakers at a bbq in 1985 is absurd. E should be embarrassed he directed this

Watched this with my college roommates at the end of senior year. I think we turned it off before it ended because it was so bad.

…da cozhunoshtruh… What’s terrible about this movie has been elaborated more thoroughly and eloquently by better movie watchers and writers before me. I however, have done something they haven’t. I have seen GOTTI three times. The first time I watched it, I enjoyed it. The second time I watched it, I didn’t think it was that bad. This time around, yeah, GOTTI fucking sucks. The colour palette is weirdly dark. The timeline jumps around incoherently. Especially after The Odyssey, there’s no…

First time seeing a mafia type film (from what I can remember). I liked it a lot, John was really good. I zoned out a lot throughout the film though, and had no idea wtf was going on 😭

I watched the first half of Gotti because I thought to myself one simple question: How can this movie actually be as bad as everyone says it is? 50 minutes later I had zero desire to subject myself to further self-inflicted mental abuse.

Film # of 365: one of the worst things I’ve seen in a long time. I think I know who Gotti is less after watching this. It looks really good, though. Like it actually looks like a movie. Weird

It was only a matter of time before I found a bad mob movie. I originally only even watched this movie because I seen on tiktok a mobster saying how the gotti movie was the most realistic mob movie so I decided to watch it… It wasent until halfway through the movie did I realize there was 2 gotti movies and he was referring to the 1995 gotti movie instead I ended up watching the 2018 gotti one and as you can…

Absolute trash. The acting by everyone sans Travolta is horrendous, which kind of makes it feel like you’re watching an amateur-middle-school-film-student’s first crack at filmmaking, and John Travolta just happens to be there. The writing was atrocious (there’s a pitbull song playing at John’s barbecue…..in the 80s….). I feel like it’s hard to make a mafia movie bad Becuase they are inherently cool, but Kevin Connelly found a way. Not a single character was likeable and I did not agree…

Jag orkar inte, get out. Och nu har jag ont i huvudet.

1/100 July First Time Watches Ranked Pretentious is often a word that gets overused. A weak attempt to criticize a movie for trying to do something more than your expectations made you think before even watching it. It tends to get thrown around by people who don’t like the idea of their traditional film experience being challenged and remade in unique ways. You won’t see a “cinephile” using it frequently, instead it’s limited to the vocabulary of the more casual…

My hot take is that the much-maligned late-career unhinged John Travolta (Gotti, The Fanatic, etc.) will attain a cultish apprecation from future generations, à la Cage/Brando/Lugosi To be completely honest, it was a little better than I expected… but I still spent two hours wishing I was just watching a better gangster movie instead As a survivor of the 2018 MoviePass situation, this is bucket list watch a long time in the making. I’ll never forget the trailer!

There are many things wrong with this movie, SO MANY GODDAMN THINGS, but one of the funniest is how it’s shot. The way that it is shot sometimes is just mystifying. Why did they think that a single camera sitcom-style would work for some of these scenes? It looks like a Matt Johnson movie, but at least half of his filmography has the excuse of being mockumentaries. Gotti uses that style because… idk? I thought they had first time camera operators, but most of these guys are fine, so maybe there’s some deeper meaning behind the cinematography…

Why the pitbull soundtrack. Don’t really like the bouncing around of timeline with no dates on the screen, just locations. They didn’t mention Mitch about the oldest son in the old movie. Travolta does look like him.

Robert and I watched the first episode of The Prisoner and thought it was fine but probably won’t be following up on it. As we were watching this we imagined John Travolta as John Gotti interjecting his Italian American mob conversations by asking people “Ay so anyway you ever seen that 60s British program Tha Prisonah? The lead isn’t so charismatic but you can see how influential it was. But I wasn’t really won over on it. Not that I’m gay or nothing”

Coppola transformed the movie-gangster into a tragic hero at the center of the generational opera of American capitalism. Scorsese made him into the prodigal son of a silent God, a degenerate princeling barreling headlong into the brickwall of modernity, tongues of hellfire licking at his heels. David Chase plopped him rudely into the unadorned reality of postmillennial decay, stripping away every tenet of his code of honor until nothing remained but a bottomless pit of neurosis, entitlement, resentment, and self-loathing,…

Giving it 1 star is a bit too harsh but it surely isn’t a good film. The narrative is messy and you never get a chance to get into the story because of all the jumps through different era’s. Some dialogue is really cringe and so is the ‘hip’ soundtrack. Also it portrays Gotti as a saint almost or a resistance fighter against the ‘evil government ‘ which feels a little unbalanced. HBO made a much better Gotti movie in the 90’s so if you’re curious about this notorious figure of crime you’re better off watching that imho.

Gotti is incredibly amusing at how bad it does everything It looks cheap as shit, the editing is awful, the acting is stilted as hell, the usage of music is incredible misfitting. Theres nothing this movie does correctly but that makes it way funnier, it feels like a parody of a Scorsese movie

Oh Johnny boy…. Bless you, you tried. I can’t even call this movie a mess – it’s incomplete. The movie’s structure and pacing are all over the place, they clearly didn’t have the budget for major set pieces, so instead they stitch together archived clips to complete the story and I’m like “???????”. If I want to watch archival footage of Gotti, I’d watch a documentary. In fact, go do that. Find a documentry on John Gotti. Even the worst…
