93/100 A world of insignificance swirling within fog and dust. Ants against gods. Destruction giving way to tranquility. Loss seen through an empty passageway and a singular window pulsing with red beams of light. Godzilla depicts a tableaux of ash and roars, screams and cries of torment, but its humanity remains delicate. Gareth Edwards follows various people and the chaos eating up their little lives, showcasing their desperate attempts to keep their bonds intact and their children safe. The stakes may not be real to Gojira and his MUTO opponents (a family of their own), but he recognizes us as modern gatekeepers; a tattered species dealing with issues of importance based in our own scale. Edwards’ approach to the drama…

In a movie called Godzilla, the main character Godzilla has approximately 11 minutes and 16 seconds of screentime out of a 2hr plus movie called Godzilla. Please make it make sense…..

Still stand by my original video essay on how this formally explores human insignificance (wow, just realized how long I’ve been doing this for, Christ) but was once again blown away by the human-scaled patience and simplicity of Edwards’ camera compositions and movements. The moody images and build-up/release are perfectly calibrated and there are so many great uses of the Spielberg Oner, all of which combined gradually invite you into the portent nature anxieties and accentuate the already pretty unbelievable VFX work. (Crazy what hiring people who know the strengths/weaknesses of CGI and letting them economically manage the location shooting accordingly can do for a movie.) Only American Godzilla movie that’s genuinely interested in leaning towards the anthropological and melancholy in the same way the original film did, while also featuring rock solid monster/disaster blockbuster setpieces worthy of a Jurassic Park or War of the Worlds movie.

Answer me this. Who doesn’t love watching a huge ancient lizard battle weird creatures for 2 hours? Exactly, no one! Godzilla 2014 is brilliant! Despite an awful marketing campaign highlighting Bryan Cranston as the main character, a blatant lie to draw in more people off the back of his success in Breaking Bad, the movie actually turned out great. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has always been an actor I’ve enjoyed and, alongside Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen and Ken Watanabe, allows for the best characters we’ve thus far seen in the franchise as you genuinely care about them from a personal perspective, even if I do love the one-dimensional characters in Kong: Skull Island as well. Sure, the story isn’t perfect, and the…

This is just the kind of GODZILLA movie I want; it looks great, the monster action is awesome, the mythology is clever, and it doesn’t shy away from the metaphorical aspects of the character. But Gareth Edwards’ execution, which is actually kind of similar to his overrated indie MONSTERS, spends way too much time on the human characters without actually developing any of them into three-dimensional people. The most interesting guy in the movie gets written out after the first 20 minutes and the rest of the time we’re stuck following Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who has more names than facial expressions. He plays a Navy bomb disposal expert with unbelievably bad luck, who randomly wanders his way into one kaiju battle…

GODZILLA is the TRUTH. one of the most satisfying, well-paced & beautifully directed blockbusters since Jurassic Park. a genuine spectacle of humility. Many complaining that the film abandons interest in its characters, but the perils of human egocentrism in the face of global crisis = the entire point. genuinely registers as the first post-human blockbuster. i almost feel like people have been conditioned to the explosive banality of contemporary tentpoles… but if any $200 million monster movie is going to feel like a throwback, this is as fitting a choice as any. in terms of scale & sophistication, PACIFIC RIM is to GODZILLA as Ralph Bakshi’s LORD OF THE RINGS is to Peter Jackson’s LORD OF THE RINGS. at a certain point…

Godzilla (2014) was a pretty solid introduction to the MonsterVerse, but I definitely came away wanting more Godzilla. The movie does a good job building up the sense of scale and mystery surrounding the monsters, and when Godzilla finally shows up, he looks absolutely incredible. But considering this is a Godzilla movie, I couldn’t help feeling like there simply wasn’t enough Goji. Bryan Cranston is easily the standout of the movie. He brings so much intensity and emotion to his…

a military action movie disguised as a monster action movie disguised as mythological horror movie with a sprinkle of family trauma. what is it trying to be? one thing they got it soooo right is scaling the monsters as big as they can. thats the problem ive seen with the newer installments. but who decided to kill the best actor in this movie 30 minutes in? whatever man. atleast godzilla was done right. the destructions and monster design was really…

def need to rewatch this, watched it when I was a kid but while I cant seem to remember much or any of it, there was this game on my ipad abt this particular movie and it was SOO good, immaculate.

Liked it because it tries to appeal to an audience that isn’t Godzilla fans. Unlike KOTM this one is interesting, and unpredictable. Also Malcom in the middles dad LOL.

Lowkey, right now I kinda wish that Ford actually didn’t get rescued from the boat with the nuke on it, as he was told there would be nine. Not out of hate, but imagine him getting reunited with his parents in the afterlife, making their family whole again by the very creatures that tore them apart to begin with. And then from there, what if we had followed his son who maybe grew up to despise the monsters he blames…

Although I liked the movie overall I did feel like there were lulls where nothing was really happening. Which leads me go believe the film could’ve been shorter by ~20ish mins but with that out of the way: Ken Watanabe is sick, the kaiju design was sick, monster battles, and a pretty interesting take on the godzilla story in general.

i actually love this movie, tapi satu hal yang bikin gregetan adalah where is godzilla??? kok gak terlalu banyak ditunjukin? padahal judulnya aja godzilla harusnya fokusnya kedia. gue udah nungguin banget dia muncul, eh malah fokus ke karakter lain yang gak tau gunanya buat apa. emang gak salah kok membangun cerita dari perspektif manusia, tapi menurutku porsinya terlalu berat ke karakter lain. apalagi ford brody, gue lebih interest sama godzilla vs muto daripada kehidupan pribadi ford yang gak ngaruh ke plot cerita. padahal sepanjang filmnya cuma naik kereta, naik pesawat, ngobrol sama tentara, terus pindah-pindah lokasi kan muak lama-lama.

My personal favorite movie. This movie is perfect. I’ve seen it probably 20 or more times and I won’t stop any time soon. This movie holds a special place in my heart as it reminds me of my dad, because I watched it with him and it made me fall in love with science fiction movies. I hope they go back to this Godzilla when he felt heavy and realistic, because he looked goofy in gvk and new empire.

O filme é bom, mas o Godzilla mal aparece, quando aparece tá tudo escuro, a trama do Mercúrio foi ficando sem graça dps q o Walter White morreu e as lutas quase sempre são interrompidas

A Triumphant Return Ten years after the box office disaster of Godzilla: Final Wars, it was high time for a revival: Enough time had passed from Roland Emmerich’s infamous take on the monster to justify another American interpretation. Did it repeat the same mistakes, or did it learn from them? While Gareth Edwards’ first big feature follows many of the same plot points from the 1998 movie (Unidentified mutated being wrecks havoc in a major American city while the characters…

everyone hating this are js party poopers, this is pure realistic kaiju/titan horror, “but we barely see godzilla” and that makes it a million times better, it adds sm to the mystery of the creature, special effects are incredible too everything looks so realistic, the score is a banger, incredible cast too, genuinely think this is one of brian cranstons best roles even though he isnt in it much, he gave 200% to every single line he had, aaron taylor…

Not only is this my favorite monsterverse film, but it’s my favorite film of all time. I can’t name a single other film that has given me more entertainment than this one. Gareth Edward’s really hit it out of the ballpark with this one. Unlike the monsterverse films we have now (example – Godizlla VS Kong & Godzilla X Kong), this movie took itself seriously and made every moment and shot matter. It actually focused on the scale of Godzilla and…

Still insane to me that this movie is over a decade old. Even after all this time, I still absolutely adore it. Genuinely one of the best directed films in the franchise and honestly still the best Monsterverse entry imo. The scale of the monsters are absolutely perfect, every time Godzilla or the Mutos are on screen, they feel intimidating. Joe Brody is one of the best human characters in Godzilla history and it’s a real shame he’s not in…

Impressionant. La criatura, el monstre Godzilla aconsegueix ser aterrador i intimidant. La magnitud de les criatures, tot i ser descomunals, es veu creïble a la pel·lícula, es nota que són grans i tenen pes a l’hora de moure’s.

Should have been called Muto, but that would’ve sold less ticket In other Godzilla movies, in other disaster movies, the human characters feel like an afterthought compared to the overwhelming destruction. In this, the humans are put right to the forefront, almost emphasised too much. With each of their characters we see what drives them, their duty to protect humanity, sometimes even putting that duty above their family It is in this duty that this version of Godzilla stands out…
-
J
Still a solid time. Never understood the hate some of my family and friends gave this one. It’s just a cool Godzilla disaster movie.

Gareth Edward’s should have been kept as the long term director of the monster verse franchise. To support my claim I use the pacing , plot, and portrayal of the second Americanized take of Gojira. As this film goes so well with their portrayal of his monster nature and also the balance / protector of peace on earth. Call him a anti hero if you want to say the least.
