Goddamn lizard. The second film in the Millennium era cycle which started with GODZILLA 2000: MILLENNIUM (Gojira nisen: mireniamu, 1999 – my review), GODZILLA VS. MEGAGUIRUS (Gojira tai Megagirasu: Jî shômetsu sakusen, 2000) is quite a ludicrous kaiju film, maybe par for the course in these Toho-produced Godzilla films at times, yet it feels as if something is missing at the start in this next era of Godzilla. Set in an alternate timeline where Godzilla wasn’t killed by the Oxygen Destroyer in GODZILLA (Gojira, 1954), Japan decides to end any nuclear testing after another attack in 1966 of a nuclear power plant, they begin to use a new form of clean plasma energy, but Godzilla is somehow still attracted to…

Godzilla did the WWE body slam in this, and that was the best part of the entire film itself 😂.

When you reboot your franchise and then promptly reboot it again (with an opening news reel footage that plays like a “Previously on Godzilla” but edits in a new suit design that rewrites the history of the franchise and relays an attack that wasn’t even featured in any of the films at all), this shows no faith in your main monster or your audience and makes everything confusing as hell. The Heisei Era wasn’t exactly known for continuity, but that this one ignored all of those and Godzilla 2000: Millennium – the first film in the Millennium Era – makes about as much sense as the way the DCEU has constructed its overarching storyline so far. Most of the story…

KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! Two films in which Black Holes play a major role. I’m sensing a pattern. But yeah, apparently the way to destroy Godzilla now involves creating a Black Hole. I mean, sure. Why not? It wouldn’t be the wildest thing this franchise has done. Misato is a cool lead and liked his dynamic with the Tanihara character. The cheesy, romantic banter from the early 2000s was quite enjoyable. The Mega thing was neat, and Goji doesn’t look as goofy as in the past film. He also gets stabbed twice in his dick by the evil gigantic dragonfly. Considering this and the ending of the last film, it seems we’re entering a kinkier era. A Walk Amongst Monsters #84 “Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, raided Tokyo. It turned everything into a sea of fire.” Did the Japanese government really decide creating a black hole was the best way to deal with Godzilla. Like, they looked at that plan and said “Yeah, let’s do that instead of literally anything else”. Well, it’s an improvement on the last film at least. Hell, the opening attack is better than the entirety of Godzilla 2000. It’s also one of the highlights of this film. You’ve got Godzilla wrecking shit as a small group of soldiers fight him using rocket launchers. They die of course but it’s still a dope way to open you film. The CGI is…

Godzilla VS Megaguirus isn’t one of the best Godzilla movies, but I nonetheless enjoy it a lot. The story is absolutely ridiculous and fun. The effects are uneven; there is a lot of bad cgi, but there are some really nice effects as well. There is one scene in particular, where the main human character, Kiriko Tsujimori, climbs Godzilla’s back, that I think is very well done. Megaaguirus is a cool monster and her final battle with Godzilla is freakin’ awesome! Despite its many flaws, Godzilla VS Megaguirus is a movie I enjoy watching from time to time.

Godzilla is stabbed in the dick twice by a giant dragonfly, drained by interdimensional bugs and shot by a man-made black hole gun, so yeah, it was a regular day at work.

The 2 biggest offenses a Godzilla movie can pull are (1) being boring, and (2) making Godzilla feel like a knock-off/Walmart version of Godzilla. This movie does both of those things and it makes for a painfully bland experience.

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 41 of 46 So, it seems that most people aren’t very fond of Godzilla vs. Megaguirus. I can’t say that I really blame them. The story is a bit crazy and the effects are pretty janky at times. Although, it’s difficult to think of many films in this franchise that don’t have crazy storylines. Personally, I think this film’s biggest problem is the use of dated CG effects. Perhaps it would’ve looked more impressive in 2000, as opposed to watching it now in 2019. However, this can be said of many films that came out around that time. Try watching The Mummy Returns, which came out a year after this, and tell me the CG effects…

Whoops! Toho forgot how to make a flying kaiju. They also forgot how to make a good film. After the last bad movie, Toho double-downed on bad composite effects and CG to create a brand new Godzilla timeline that ends up going nowhere. They also hire newcomer Misato Tanaka as the first of multiple female leads going forward, and unfortunately she is as green as they come. Like Godzilla 2000, the first fifteen minutes are the strongest just by virtue…

Godzilla vs. Megaguirus is not among the top tier entries in the series, but it has enough fun kaiju action and interesting ideas to be enjoyable. The story does an interesting twist on the original movie and the big sci-fi machines used to fight Godzilla are inventive, but the film does not build on these elements as much as it could have and the second act is fairly slow as a result. Godzilla gets plenty of great moments and Megaguirus…

Some janky effects, for sure, but also lots of fun monster mayhem and a few gooey kills as a new flying menace (the titular Megaguirus) and a PTSD-addled, vengeance-seeking special ops soldier battle the Big G. Millennium & Megaguirus are the odd couple that complete each other. The safe competent sequel with no new ideas, and the spectacularly unsuccessful alternate timeline reboot. The rushed course correction for a brand that had been damaged, and the rushed justification for a series that had been revived way too soon. Neither is individually memorable in the grand scheme of the Godzilla franchise, but together they explore the greatest dilemma of the 21st century: how do you even make a new…

Ends on one of the most dynamic and fun kaiju battles the ol’ G-Man’s ever had… but it’s a boring ride there. These military dramas are trying my patience, let the kid that dumped the egg into the sewer be the hero.

This movie has amazing monster scenes that consistently remind me that the best thing you could possibly do is watch kaiju movies in bed in the dark. Unfortunately I think the human story is both under baked and far too central to this film. Still a relatively good time though

Definitely one of the weaker films I’ve seen from the franchise. Plot isn’t very Interesting, the monster feels generic, plus it totally sucks that they’ve changed the continuity when there was no real reason to. Not a fan of this one

Underrated Millennium era entry. The human-story lightly touches on the aspect of the consequences of destructive weapons and is complimented with some really cool monster action

Every time Godzilla has come to Japan he was there due to some incredible power sources. When he came to Japan in 1996 due to the plasma energy Japan decided to create the G Grasper to fight back. In 2001 they finally managed to create a super weapon that will destroy Godzilla once and for all but during testing something else comes to earth and soon Godzilla will not be the only problem humanity has to face! After Godzilla 2000…

“Why would a woman fight Godzilla?” For my birthday, I decided to put on the Godzilla movie where they try and shoot a black hole at Godzilla. Also, Godzilla body slams a dragonfly. GODZILLA X MEGAGUIRUS: THE G EXTERMINATION STRATEGY (its godlike full title), with an average Letterboxd rating of 2.9, is by far the most underrated Godzilla movie ever made. It’s creative, inventive, and extremely audacious. The premise is that Godzilla appears every few decades or so to wreck…

I do sorta feel like you’ve lost the plot a bit when you start making alternate timelines for your franchise based on if the villain was defeated or not like this is Zelda. Ultimately a slog, it sets up some interesting ideas at the beginning but doesn’t do much with them and the fights are surprisingly lacking in it too due to the poor direction

Godzilla vs Megaguirus is an interesting place within Godzilla history. It’s in the middle of Godzilla Millennium and GMK. While I have not seen the latter, I have seen the former already. I didn’t really like Millennium all too much mainly because of the fully CGI big bad Kaiju and lack of substance from it’s story and characters. It always felt like it was missing something. This movie ends up making a lot of improvements and is in a step…

legit shocked people seem to be more middling on this one, it’s like a greatest hits episode of godzilla tropes mashed into a good sci fi thriller marathon. not only does it correct a lot of the initial awkwardness of the millenium era’s first entry, it’s got everything you could want! godzilla wrestling moves, wormholes, falling satellites, crack teams of people failing to stop godzilla from doing the whole godzilla deal. some of the best scoring in these since the original zillas too, carries a lot of the action sequences well. good, good zilla

Megaguirus smiling evilly before dropping a building on Godzilla’s head and Godzilla defying gravity to body slam Megaguirus (who has a hilarious “oh shit” reaction) are the kind of delightfully ridiculous moments we would normally get from the Showa era movies. I love this series when it’s serious, but I also love it when it’s silly. This film’s continuity makes my brain hurt. But as a stand alone story, it’s very fun, and treats us to one of the best kaiju fights in the series.

A lot of weird slow-mo in here? Also a bunch of bugs. Do you think Godzilla is tired of his way of life?

Forgettable Godzilla Vs Megaguirus highlights a fear to retain continuity within the franchise, specifically frequent in the Millenium era. Megaguirus is an especially forgettable opponent, the storyline is boring with really poor pacing, and the big fight isn’t especially noteworthy. Megaguirus’s theme is really good, and a highlight of the film for me, but that definitely does not make up for this one
-
K
It’s like dry chicken and rice, it gets the job done but it not enough seasoning and bad cgi

Megaguirus just seemed too reminiscent to Destroyah in many ways. Slasher film type introduction and general terrorrizing ensues. It was all done worse though. The human drama was competent enough, I loved the hacker kid with the desktop waifu. The big fight between the kaiju was kinda weird, a lot of wrapping low fps shots, maybe mimicking megaguirus’ sight? The coup de grace in the form of a double tap was satisfying. Post credits scene in here… just undoing the entire movie’s effort..

-
S
Very conflicted. On one hand: Kiriko is probably one of the more interesting protagonists we’ve gotten in the series, and those little horror sequences with the bugs are exactly my kind of thing. On the other: Megaguirus, despite a pretty cool final design, feels more like a nuisance than a threat, with a final battle that is pretty awfully edited by the standards these movies have set for themselves. (Part of My first Godzilla-thon, now in the final stretch)

The opening scene to this one is a little strange but I kinda liked it, throwing us into a new continuity with some context works just fine for me. I am confused by the scene with the kids, how the fuck are the tiny robots not impressive? They’re cool too, it’s tiny robots that cook a bit of rice curry and kimchi in five seconds, that’s rad! Unleashing a black hole on Godzilla is the worst plan ever, it would…

The weakest Millenium Goji film. In my first viewing it was sorta compelling but ultimately just felt like a cheaper version of G2K. The colors are ugly. The villain is just another Battra lookin variant. (I know they’re different creatures but visually they’re just monster moths). A bright spot is Michiru Oshima’s unique score. She hadn’t quite perfected it yet here but in a few more movies she would return and deliver a banger of a soundtrack.

Another based entry in the millennium series. I feel like this movie is highkey overlooked/overhated. It serves as a great time capsule of the Japanese Y2K. The “horror” elements used to scare Me as a kid. Bug=scary. Also, great suit design! And We genuinely needed a black hole to take the motherfucker down

Idk how to feel about this one. It’s just strange and all over the place but I kinda vibe with it. Megagurius is more of a subplot in this movie but at the same floods Tokyo causing billions in damage but they don’t really acknowledge this too much. Most of the plot is spent on trying to kill Godzilla with a black hole instead. The government is just sorta careless that they created a giant bug that eats people. There’s…

that freeze frame and cut to credits?????????? other than that, i had a pretty alright time with this one. maybe it’s partially because i went in with very low expectations, but i thought this was a lot more memorable than 2000. it’s not great by any means but has enough fun stuff going for it that i find it hard not to like at least somewhat. will say that while the one horror scene felt very oddly dark compared to…

Really fun. Probably some of the most unique fight choreography of all time. The dimension tide is an awesome concept, the kaiju are well designed, and the characters are really likeable and easy to root for, the dub voice acting isn’t even that bad too! I’ll probably go more in depth if i rewatch the film, which i don’t doubt i will someday.

3 is generous here, but Godzilla has a cool look and takes out quite a few buildings which is enough to keep me entertained. They tried to do something different with the new monster too, even though the execution was off. The execution was off on just about everything really.

A lot to like here, it’s just a shame that they use egregiously bad cgi in the middle parts of the movie. On the bright side, the government shoots Godzilla with a black hole twice and it survives

A lot like 2000, most of the film I wasn’t vibing but one small thing got its hook in me. The plasma energy plot didn’t intrigue me a whole ton but the twist at the end really got me. Yeah this movie fucking sucks, everyone else can tell you about all the plot holes and the weird messaging, but I can tell you about how the physics make distractingly 0 sense. They claim to be able to make a black-hole 2 meters big, assuming that means an event horizon 2 meters in diameter, the black-hole requires a mass of 2e+27 kg, thats 200 times the mass of the earth, as you may remember, mass is energy, so to produce…

I’ve never really connected with Godzilla vs. Megaguirus. I don’t really remember watching it as a kid, so if I did, it must not have left much an impression. I watched it roughly ten years ago and wasn’t all that impressed. And admittedly, I’m still not. Honestly, the cold open is actually pretty good. The millennium suit is superimposed onto the original 1954 version and this retcons the original’s death. There are a series of attacks over the decades as…

Slight downgrade from Godzilla 2000 but I still really like this one, it’s kind of a mix up of dark and serious with over the top silly kaiju action and *for the most part* it works.

Well, everyone knows Godzilla was defeated in 1954 with the Oxygen Destroyer, but what this movie’s theory presupposes is… maybe he wasn’t? This turned out to be one of those Godzilla sequels too goofy to collect itself and so my own thought processes became just as incoherent, which forces me to abandon trying to tie anything together in a neat little bow and just dump a few stray thoughts into the field all willy-nilly. – “We can’t use nuclear plants…

the millennium era takes some time to find its footing and truly excel in character development and storytelling. While it has a decent whimsy score, an intriguing premise, and a cool new monster, the pacing can be a bit slow and daunting. I admire the return of flight practical effects and it looks great overall but again the shot matching isn’t the greatest. really cool final shot with megaguirus descending. the CGI is mostly silly, but I can acknowledge its contribution to the advancements seen in future installments.
