Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 27 of 46 You only need to look at the title to know this movie is awesome. I mean, you’ve got Godzilla and you’ve got a mecha version of Godzilla. What more do you want? Well, there’s also some space apes trying to conquer Earth, some badass Interpol agents, and another sleepy kaiju that needs someone to sing it awake when it’s time to protect the humans. Are there plot holes big enough to drive a truck through? Who the fuck cares? Is it fun? You’re goddamn right it is. Oh, and if that isn’t enough, Godzilla also turns himself into a giant electromagnet.

A Walk Amongst Monsters #47 “Space titanium? So it came from outer space?” Godzilla learns imitation isn’t the sincerest form of flattery when a robo-doppelgänger drags his reputation through the mud. Give it up for my boy Anguirus. He shows up within the first minute of this film as if to reassure this’ll be a good movie. The very second he meets Mechagodzilla in disguise he sees through it and jumps his ass. He never stood a chance and flees with a torn jaw, but he was willing to take on anyone who disrespected his pal Godzilla. Mechagodzilla completely owns this film outshining even Godzilla. His beautiful atomic era design is my favorite of all of his designs and his…

Mechagodzilla is a massive robotic doppelgänger made of space titanium with a vast array of weaponry who also happens to like jazzy tunes.

mechagodzilla is walking up with all his fancy tricks & toys, lasers in his eyes, missiles in his armpit, acting like he’s hot shit for being made of space titanium and having all that bling… he didn’t work for it, mechagodzilla is a POSEUR, he didn’t work for all that success, dude was just born into it, he’s a fucking robo-aristocrat. godzilla had to climb that ladder from the bottom, my man was a dead dinosaur and underwent a grueling nuclear training regime to get those radioactive GAINS and over 60 years later godzilla is still bringing his A-game… meanwhile mechagodzilla, where’s he at? that motherfucker is languishing, no one likes him, he sold out, appearing in LAME-stream CGI garbage like…

Nothing will beat the time (circa 2016) that I saw this projected on a blood-red, pan-and-scan 16mm TV print in the basement of Sonic Boom in Toronto, but the version you can watch on the Criterion Channel admittedly looks very nice. Incredibly upsetting when Mechagodzilla breaks Anguirus’s jaw—doubly so because this is Anguirus’s final appearance in the series (aside from an obligatory cameo in Godzilla: Final Wars). He’s a good boy and a good friend and it hurts to see him hurt. Godzilla must recognize what a chump King Caesar is, so it’s nice of him that he went out of his way to let Caesar get some face-saving strikes at Mechagodzilla at the very end of the brawl.

a definite kaiju curse victim in that very little happens at all until the last 10 minutes. thankfully there’s an indelible villain, an extremely memorable final fight with seriously unsafe levels of fireworks and constant ridiculous rotoscoped “laser beams”, and a nearly four-minute sequence consisting solely of a lady kneeling on the beach singing a poppy love ballad to a monster named King Caesar, who sleeps through the whole thing, motionless until the very end.

Not a lot of people know that Mechagodzilla was originally built by ape aliens trying to take over the planet

my favorite kaiju are the ones like king caesar, baragon, anguirus, the off-center guys who aren’t actually that powerful or useful and get their butts trounced every time they do battle, but they have an underdog’s charm and you love to see them fight even when you know they’re going to have their face blasted apart by a nefariously overpowered mechagodzilla — what matters most in these old school kaiju films is the spiritual tenacity and mystery of how even giant monsters can suck at their jobs.

This has gotta be the bloodiest G-rated film of all time. Seriously shit sprays more than Bonnie Blue on her period.

My favorite godzilla film of the Shöwa era, and maybe of all time.

The nostalgia on this one is insane for me. As a kid who was OBSESSED with Godzilla especially the old films this movie was very well my favorite. Mecha-Godzilla being the antithesis of everything Godzilla is and being everything he is against is such a incredible concept. The human characters are relatively uninteresting but omfg the skirmishes and the consequent final battle omfg. Cinema

Space titanium and other such non-sensical science. Human looking aliens in shiny space garb. Giant monsters fighting. Lots of miniatures destroyed. Jazz soundtrack. Godzilla charging himself with lightning was pretty badass. The human element participated in fairly interesting activities. There is even a little Planet Of The Apes influence. King Caesar is a very prissy kaiju. Dude won’t wake up without a song. Makes you kind of wonder how they approached the writing process. Surely they just came up with…

As always, the miniature work here is incredible. And this one has some insane pyro — so much fire, so many explosions! It also delivers an ancient prophecy and aliens that look like people but are actually some kind of ape monsters. Fun stuff.

Solid, the human plotline meanders as per usual but the actual fighting scenes are pretty sick. King Caesar is set up massibely but does practically nothing TT

2/4 of Godzilla all dayer completed because I had to leave to go to my STUPID GAY JOB😢 Liked this more on rewatch, the big screen (and speakers) definitely helps. I do think it has a lack of substance which holds it back from being a truly great Godzilla film, but it does introduce mechagodzilla who is a complete fucking menace so I can’t really complain

Absolute banger. Can they shoot day for night? Absolutely not. Is the alien plot and “space titanium” stupid? Absolutely Was it fun as hell with likeable human characters and a blowout ending with The King of Monsters going super saiyan and unlocking the X-Gene to become magento? You are god damn right. Great performances, a fun soundtrack, cat face Goji and King Ceaser are a ton of fun even if King Ceaser is a little underutilised and his designs goofy.…

This one broke my brain on the lore of these films, fuck you mean Planet of the Apes shapeshifters made Mechagodzilla from space titanium? Great opening and final fight, that middle act is too focused on being a very contrived political thriller but as soon as the musical number hits we’re so back. Anguirus once again shows up to get fucked up, just pure bullying at this point. King Caesar did nothing, literally hid behind a rock then got a few licks in once Godzilla did all the work? The actors playing the creatures bring so much personality to them, incredible physicality.

The movie is spent trying to stir the Okinawan guardian King Caesar to help fight Mechagodzilla, who demands a full song only to get his shit rocked when he is eventually summoned. I enjoyed watching people in kaiju costumes wail on eachother. The movie stars comedy hero era Godzilla, so he does cute little boxing moves and taunts when he fights which is obviously great. If you like explosions, you’ll definitely like this movie.

I really liked when Godzilla showed up and said “it’s Godzilling time!” And then Godzilled all over the place

- An Okinawan prophecy that foretells the destruction of the Earth is seeming fulfilled when Godzilla emerges to return to his destructive roots.
