Notorious as one of the ones that shamelessly overuses stock footage, but hey, I always like what I’m looking at. Godzilla’s got a really funny, dumb face in this one. I love the special effects in this, and all Godzilla films, and (not “but”) I will say that the cutting back and forth between military stock footage and very obvious model tanks is the series at its most Ed Woodian. In the American dubbed version, there are a couple of scenes where Godzilla and Anguirus speak in garbled English at each other. In the Japanese version, they speak through speech bubbles. It’s a fun novelty, but I’m glad the experiment wasn’t repeated. These guys are animals. They should communicate like…

In this one Godzilla beats the shit out of Ghidorah (again) and his new friend Gigan (who has blades for arms and a saw for abs) to stop alien cockroaches from building an amusement park or something. Then he swims away into the sunrise with his good pal Anguirus to a spaghetti western theme song.

Jun Fukuda accomplished something that professional wrestling organizations such as WWE and Impact have been trying to do for years. He directed and filmed what is arguably the greatest tag team match of all time and shared it with the masses for entertainment. The Hardy Boyz? Who needs them when you have Godzilla and Anguirus. Edge and Christian? I know better bad boys than them. Their names are King Ghidorah and Gigan. Yes, Fukuda’s film suffers from the same issues as the pay-per-views of those organizations mentioned above. The background people are not interesting yet are annoying enough to make themselves seen and heard. There are also some questionable business decisions, too. Namely, falling back to a familiar but dated…

something that interests me about these 70s godzilla films that rarely appears anywhere else in the series is the fact that these were the first entries to have godzilla bleed, with enormous squibs and geysers of bright red blood that would get all over the costume; he even gets his eye poked out in this one! in the earlier godzilla films, he’d get punched and thrown around, sure, but now in the 70s, he’s much more vulnerable and tactile, less of a mythic monster and more of a earthly creature. it’s hard not to see this as a direct influence from the gamera saga, where they were always interested in making gamera a very imperiled kaiju who often lost fights with other monsters. it’s this interesting paradox that, while these kaiju films were being more and more aimed at children, they also became progressively more gory and stylized in their violence.

if an alien civilization wished to stage a clandestine invasion and seize control of Earth, do you think they’d disguise themselves as A) politicians; B) scientists; or C) childrens’ amusement park developers in matching orange polyester leisure suits? you get one guess. one of the slower entries, enjoyable mainly for the ridiculous plot and the appearance of the always-welcome King Ghidorah (Gigan is pretty cool too, a cyborg reptile with a massive buzzsaw in his chest), but has the unfortunate luck of following GODZILLA VS. HEDORAH, perhaps one of the greatest kaiju films ever made, which it can’t keep up with on either a visual or narrative level. far too much time is spent with the human cast locked in various rooms or watching the action from a comfortable distance, and Fukuda stages the monster fights with very little of his usual rambunctiousness, although they are characteristically photographed much more frequently in close-up.

A Walk Amongst Monsters #44 “They’re not human. They’re insects from another planet. Monster cockroaches from space!” Godzilla takes on a theme park when he discovers they’ve infringed on his copyright only to face their two alien bouncers. As this is one of my childhood favorites it’s reassuring to find it still holds up after all these years. Though the seams are beginning to show. I don’t know why alien cockroaches decided the best way to take over the world was to build a children’s theme park but what do I know? They don’t even try and hide the fact they’re evil and openly talk about their “secret” plan in front of normal people. Maybe they deserved to get their…

KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! That ending with Goji just looking at that camera after the humans thank him for his service, and he turns back and basically yells “Baahh!” as he does a gesture with his hand. Lol The fact I wasn’t sure I watched this movie like an hour after I saw it goes to show how much I care for it. There are some cool fights towards the end and the new monster designs are cool. The human stuff is literally forgettable; again, I can barely remember anything about it. I remember the performances being solid, I think. All in all, there are a few good things: a good final fight, a lot of sci-fi stuff and arguably one…

PROS: Godzilla bleeds for the time and blows up a giant statue of himself, Gigan is one hell of a cool design, I love the mangy grandfather look of King Ghidorah in some shots, who don’t love cockroach aliens, a cast of human characters that includes a comic book artist and his karate-kicking girlfriend sounds great. CONS: It’s the same goddamn alien invasion plot, the cast of human characters given much to do, it’s pretty obvious Jun Fukuda doesn’t want to make this movie, there’s so much stock footage and it’s way too low energy for a film that wrap-ups with thirty minutes of monster fighting.

Aliens want Earth (again). I really love seeing Godzilla and Anguirus in action, fighting together against an invasion and protecting the Earth. As a fan of Dragon Ball Z, it reminds me of Goku and Piccolo. former enemies who are now friends. An effective new film featuring the return of King Ghidorah (whom I thought was dead) and Gigan a powerful new enemy that really impressed me. It’s one of the best final battles! The amusement park setting is is very well utilized. Note that ending song (Godzilla March) in honor of Godzilla is really cool; it was composed by Susumu Ishikawa. I added it straight to my playlist. He deserves it.

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 25 of 46 Look, this is another one of those Godzilla movies that fans either love or hate. The litmus test that will determine which camp you fall into is the scene where Godzilla and Anguirus have a conversation using comic book style speech bubbles. Yeah, this is where Toho really leaned into the craziness with these things. Once again, Earth is under invasion from aliens. This time around, the extraterrestrial threat comes from Space Hunter Nebula M. The Nebula M aliens, who look like giant cockroaches when they aren’t disguised as humans, destroyed their own planet with pollution. Now they need a suitable replacement. So, what’s their big invasion plan? Apparently, it involves building a…

I liked this more than expected. A great and enjoyable human cast, cool monster fight scenes and overall an enjoyable film. Gigan’s a really cool monster, and its design makes me crave for a figure. It is not without its flaws however. Once Ghidorah and Gigan get introduced, the humans are barely present anymore and the focus shifts fully to the kaiju, which I think is unfortunate as I did really enjoy them. The plot is interesting, but also a…

Two monsters… One of them is Ghidorah. The other one is new. A completely new sound. This movie has goji, angerus, gigan and again king ghidora. This movie isnt the weakest showa gets but human charicters arnt as likeable. Such a doffrent film from vs hedora. Like with a couple of these i dont have many notes here i enjoy the final scene and yes this is a fun movie. 3 away from finishing the showa era. Also forgot to mention kaijus talk to wachother in this one with speech bubbles… showa era is goated for a reason.

Given how much I love Gigan (he’s my favorite Godzilla monster) it’s such a shame how crap his movies are! Half the fights in this are stock footage and it’s hella noticeable. BUT I love my big goofy boy, and I love the alien cockroaches. God this movie is dumb.
-
T
Very silly. Story makes no sense. Absurd. However, those things don’t bring the movie down. It all just goes along with the colourful and wacky sets and costumes, laughable special effects (especially the shots where kids’ toys are used as tanks, people, buildings, etc), ridiculous monsters, ludicrous villains (which are actually giant cockroaces wearing human suits), a poorly delivered moral to the story, and…need I go on? This is the perfect 1970s (Showa era) Godzilla movie.
-
M
Talking Godzilla?! Check. Huge fights? Check. Good enough Showa era Godzilla flick. Tons of fighting, which is pretty fun. I actually like the somewhat ham-fisted message in this one about over reliance on technology being a weakness, (a weakness that’s used to counterattack the space cockroaches quite awesomely). Which… dang, what a cool Idea and what a great final conversation the two bad guys have! Just stellar! The hippie character is fantastic, as is Tomoko Tomoe, but I’m not as…

Gigan – a walking buzzsaw chicken – you wouldn’t think it would work, but it easily does. In fact he has the most creative and daring design of the Godzilla Showa era so far. Since Gigan is one of the only positive points to this piece, my apologies for the upcoming negativity. However, this is constructive criticism, not anger. Godzilla vs Hedorah opened the franchise to new and exciting heights, taking risks not seen quite frankly since the original. As…

This one had a lot of fun moments. I really liked the Godzilla and Anquirus team up a lot, and the villain kaiju team up between Ghidora and Gigan was also sick! The character interactions were a bit one note at times, and the whole theme park settting was a bit out of place and dragged. Overall though, the character were fun and occasionally witty. At the end of they day I’m here for the monster fights and the ones in this film were really sick!

Very odd and the story is just not fun but the battle is.

He definitely got put through the ringer in this one, but never bet against My goat Gojira! He’ll always put belt to ass. (Seeing Godzilla bleed is crazy) Just like vs Hedorah, this one is very 70’s in a fun way of course. WEIRD ass plot though, space roaches? An insane amount of explosions. I love Gigan! That freaky little razor chicken, is one of my favorite Kaiju’s. Despite kinda being a little bitch. Only “real” complaint is the recycling of older movie’s again but it’s not too noticeable if you don’t know about it

This may have been the most difficult to rate film in era thus far. I am extremely disappointed. Let’s do the positives first. The design of Gigan was cool, the destruction caused by Gigan was awesome, it’s nice to see Ghidorah and Anguirus again and the fight between Godzilla and Gigan was awesome too, I mean Godzilla bleeds!! For the first time, that’s impressive… now the bad parts. The plot and human characters… I mean wtf?? Aliens are undercover on…

Going into this one, I was very excited to see my boy Gigan (easily one of my favorite designs in the Tohoverse). The movie was entertaining enough but I was a little burnt due to the re-use of music and stock footage once again. The human aspect of the movie didn’t really grab me all too much but I just turned my brain off and enjoyed the kaiju fights. Some interesting miniature work with the Godzilla tower and artillery but aside from some well-enjoyed Kaiju appearances, I wasn’t feeling this one as much as I thought I would. Not bad, not great, but good enough.

This movie is a great example of how much Fukuda both does and does not give a shit about these movies. He’s got his heart in the right place and also doesn’t care- love it. Gigan seems mean. I do not like the alien with hook hands. He’s an asshole.

The Anguirus suit looks like a fucking rotted corpse, Toho couldn’t even afford a can of paint to fix the peeling horn up? Godzilla movies get a bad rap as just being all spectacle, probably in large part due to the next movie’s outsized popularity in the United States, but they really can have excellent casts of human characters and tell gripping storylines, like here. Gengo is immediately a compelling lead, as are the rest of his allies against the…

This one kind of slowly grows on you as it goes on. At first I thought it would be another Godzilla movie with not enough monsters and too much of a plot centered around the people. But once all the Kaiju action gets going around 35-40 minutes, it doesn’t let up, and it’s pretty friggin’ dope. There’s a whole lotta explosions and destruction in this one compared to the other Showa era movies. And the mini sets are as cool…

Back to the slop machine we go. I love Gigan, he might be my favourite design for a Godzilla monster and has been long before I watched any Godzilla film. However, he is not even referred to until halfway through the film, despite beinvone of two titular characters. Fights were alright. Godzilla films where I’ve cared about the human plot: 0/12. I genuinely don’t think the writers for these films have ever spoken to another human being in their life, the plot of this one was so dumb it makes me a little bit mad
-
T
Godzilla vs. Gigan may be plagued with similar issues I have with other Godzilla films from this period. Weak central human characters, silly villian characters, and a plot that bogs down a lot of the runtime. However, it also has a lot of the elements I love from every Godzilla film. The last 25 minutes of this movie is non-stop kaiju action and it also has some legendary Godzilla moments like Godzilla using King Ghidorah’s three heads to throw him…

Godzilla film 13/34 (as of 2026). Gigan himself is a 10/10. He screams 70s camp and has powers akin to a kaiju version of the Xmen. Unfortunately, everything else about this entry into the Godzilla universe is terrible. For one, there is an entirely separate sci-fi/spy thriller movie happening on top of the kaiju flick. There’s zero sense of tension since neither the kaiju nor the spy movie seem to directly effect one another in a meaningful way until the…

This movie is strangely good; it is quite basic yet so stupidly zany that it is incredibly entertaining, and despite oddities like kaijus talking when it suits the plot, it works really well. The alien subplot is unsettling but somehow works for all audiences, and the kaiju combat is impressive—brutal from start to finish, with Godzilla pushed to the ropes.
-
K
I think this is probably the most difficult Godzilla movie for me to rate. In many respects it can be just as weird, if not weirder than the last entry (and that is saying a lot). Some weirdness doesn’t match up with my energy though and this is one of those cases. I used to think of Gigan the monster as overrated purely because he’s always been popular. With the benefit of time i’ve come around to admit that the…

T
Fairly slow and uneventful film that’s mostly just worth checking for the introduction of Gigan, who basically sums up the cheese of the 70’s Godzilla films while being cool on his own. Otherwise, just watch the climax and don’t mind the rest.

Re-ranking the whole series by the strength of each movies human plotlines. Yet another secret group of aliens are attempting to covertly conquer the Earth. And wouldn’t you know it? Somehow, Ghidorah has returned. This time though, they’re pretending to build an amusement park called World Children’s Land with their star attraction Godzilla Tower (it’s exactly what it sounds like). For some reason they spill their plan to destroy Monster Island to a manga artist who eventually finds out these…

Cockroach aliens destroy their home world via pollution so they attempt to conquer earth by creating a theme park which mind controls King Ghidorah, the three headed monster, and Gigan, who has knife hands. Godzilla and his buddy, Sonic the Hedgehog, send the aliens running by communicating via speech bubble before walking off into the sunset. Awesome.

Misc thoughts: -Scenes of Godzilla and Anguirus talking to each other and subbed remind me of that one episode from the original Pokémon season where the Pokémon talk to each other and it’s subbed. -If I was a Japanese kid watching Godzilla and Anguirus get whooped by Gigan and KG I’d be super stressed. Like bro, GET UP! FIGHT BACK! -There is blatant shot reuse and ngl it works/adds charm. Yes I do wanna see the same shot of Godzilla suplexing King Ghidorah 3 times in a row. Thanks for asking.

Godzilla vs Gigan is definitely one of the weirdest films in the franchise, and that’s exactly what makes it one of my favorites. It’s got Godzilla and Anguirus talking to each other in speech bubbles. It’s one of the only Showa era films to show the Kaiju bleeding. The plot revolves around alien cockroaches disguised as humans building a Godzilla themed amusement park to take over Earth. There’s a 15 minute montage of Ghidorah and Gigan destroying a city. If…

Younger me did not know how to appreciate just how campy this movie was. It gets borderline slapstick and screwball at times. Compared to the usual reporters and scientists, having our cast be a manga artist, his kung fu girlfriend, and a silly fat guy that looked like a hippie is refreshing. The only normal characters were the girl looking for her missing brother and the engineer brother who was held captive. They’re silly, but their mystery is a bit…

Eh plot. Kinda drags a lot. Gigan tho… he was a serial killer who bragged about killing people and professed and confessed to be a DEMON! Another funny ass ghidorah beatdown nets a half star.
-
M
The silly human plot lured me into a false sense of security–Anguirus gets *gored* in this movie. What the hell!? The human plot is odd and fun. There is a *lot* of reused footage in the monster fights. And Godzilla and Anguirus get speech bubbles. Likely the oddest Godzilla film to be released at its time.
-
D

-
L
Gigan has one of the best kaiju designs and also the Godzilla and Anguirus duo cannot be stopped
-
B
Why is Godzilla talking?? This one was definitely a surprise to me. I do have problems with this movie mainly being the speech bubbles that the monsters have at times and also the really old drug out plot of aliens hiding on earth. While these are the best aliens so far, the explanation of what they really are is so dumb. Other than that though the humans in this movie are very entertaining almost more than the fights scenes, and I was very surprised to see the large cartoony gushes of blood on the Kaijus. The 70s Godzilla movies are definitely interesting.
-
D
I think this takes the cake for the best movie ever.
-
T
You know they really put effort into this when they don’t even try to hide how they’re reusing old footage. Just when I was starting to think these movies weren’t bad, I had to be reminded that they can be bad. I don’t think this is the worst movie but it’s just more of the same. It’s so uninspired that it couldn’t be bothered to film new scenes sometimes. I have no idea what the next few movies will bring. I’m hoping it goes back to being better than usual. But this project has hurt me too much to be too hopeful.
-
S
Tonally quite contrary to its predecessor, this more derivative flick has its charms. The plot is just a worse version of some of the previous films. Gigan’s design is a banger though. That combined with the colorful presentation, the silly godzilla talking scenes, and the bloody final battle make it a fun watch.

Gigan reminds me of cyclops from X-men he’s such a cool character and I loved this film as his debut as he alongside King Ghidorah are being controlled by Alien cockroachs that wear humanlike appearances to blend in. The idea that the cockroachs will take over Earth isn’t something surprising with the fact that they can survive radioactivity aftermath of a nuclear bomb if they aren’t directly hit, this is because of how slowly their cells divide so hey it…

These movies are getting a little derivative. This is the like the 4th time there’s aliens controlling the Kaijus. Gigan does look cool, Anguirus is the fucking boi, (leave him alone, dammit! Those 5 minutes of him getting bombarded, legitimately pissed me off) and Ghidorrah is not beating the bum-ass kaiju allegations. I think I could have rated it a bit higher. I did not mind how silly these movies have gotten. I think Godzilla is one of those characters that can fit pretty much any genre. I just hate how much footage is being reused.

I’m a bit conflicted on this one. The Kaiju fights in this were some of the best of the era so far, but the human plot and antagonists left so much to be desired. Gigan was a badass and really felt like the biggest threat Godzilla has faced so far. To my knowledge, he’s the first Kaiju in the series to make Godzilla bleed. Gigan really felt like an imposing force. But god, none of the human stuff was interesting…

Enough with these alien plots already im begging you!! These ones were at least kinda fun because they turned out to be literally giant alien cockroaches but it doesnt really count if they’re just men in suits again for 99% of the runtime. And they control the evil monsters again, how many times do they want to come up with this same plot point?? Otherwise this was fine. Sometimes quite fun even. I liked when they just showed Ghidora and…

Ghidorah looked like the band Slade in this one.

Gigan, ay? What a freak. A very enjoyable entry, with a cast of human characters that are distinct and fun to watch (a very low bar to clear, but some of these movies…), and the injuries sustained by both Godzilla and Anguiras give it some weight that’s been lacking in some of the other movies, though this is offset by the villains just sort of running away instead of being meaningfully defeated.

Oh right. Gigan is the pointy space monster. This one whips. Godzilla has a sassy chat with Anguirus, an artist makes a great poster, and I guess GIgan is there. The main story is bond-villain fun, and the name for the bad guy’s organization is excellent.

Such a lazy movie in terms of storytelling and action. At least the last one was trying something a little new. This one just immediately reverted back to what was done before by literally copying fight moves and storylines. Also what the fuck even is Gigan. Is he some sort of robot chicken or something?

A solid entry in the Shōwa era, really liked the destruction and rampage you see King Ghidorah and Gigan do before you get a real fight between Godzilla and two of them. The human plot involving espionage and cockroach aliens is kinda fun, not very good but it’s stupidly fun and embraces that aspect of itself. Yuriko Hishimi actually gives us a female character who’s an actual character in this movie and she gets a few action scenes, instead of…

Guys… Godzilla is finally good again. We finally get a new city destruction scene for the first time since Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. Godzilla and Anguirus bleed. This is the first time I see the appeal of Anguirus. I know that the speech bubbles are a little silly but it does endear me to Anguirus, I made a whatsapp sticker out of him saying OK.

Godzilla bleeds! Anguirus too. I believe that is a first for the series. So alien cockroaches have come to Earth after their planet was more or less destroyed by pollution. They are disguised as humans for budgetary reasons and have brought along King Ghidorah and Gigan. Either every alien planet has a King Ghidorah, or every alien species finds him out in space and employs him as a hired gun when they want to take over Earth. I haven’t been…

For some reason that I can not comprehend, they got rid of Banno and brought back Fukuda. Now Godzilla vs. Gigan is not nearly as bad as his last film, but it is something almost as bad, stale. Again, nothing in this film is technically bad but it all feels like it has been done before. The movie has a similar action-adventure tone like in Ebirah and the plot treads upon Astro-Monster and D.A.M. with aliens mind controlling monsters to…

Godzilla checking on Anguirus to see if hes ok 🥹🥹🥹 love them both so much I know they were on a really tight budget but guys, you’ve used that Godzilla suit for 4 movies now, you can literally see it falling apart. And the villains are literally just “The Metamorphosis” references. Oh and Minilla shows up, and even though its only for 2 seconds it nearly made me throw up

After Godzilla Vs. Hedorah, Godzilla Vs. Gigan is a bit of a step down. Still, it’s a film with aims to be a playful wrestling match/Saturday morning cartoon with word balloons for Godzilla, a silly human-centered plot about a theme park run by evil aliens and a very toyetic monster. But as cynical as having a toyetic monster is, I can’t deny, the Gigan design is actually pretty cool. The destruction scenes are also pretty effective in setting a sense…

This movie gets a lil boring at parts, but its far from terrible, Gigan is still one of the coolest cyborg monsters in the franchise, the soundtrack was neat, and its always awesome to get Anguirus in on a Godzilla movie Also that reused stock footage for Ghidorah’s scenes were just 💀💀💀

It shocks me that Godzilla vs Megalon is seen as the poster child for so bad it’s good Godzilla movies because I feel most of the flaws with that film are due to its rushed production. Things often feel cheap and a painful amount of stock footage is used and I find, in a lot of ways, any personality struggles to get through because it’s such an economical and rushed product. It’s very “just get it done, keep it steady…
