I was too harsh on this when I first saw it. There’s more Godzilla than usual, the human stories have some blockbuster thrust to them, and Biollante is one hell of an original design. Godzilla’s face is particularly menacing after decades of his ping-pong eyed look. It’s funny that almost nothing that happens in this movie matters, but it piles on the 90s love of psychics, commandoes and slurpy creatures. Like most of the Evil Godzilla films, once they defeat him, he just gets up a few minutes later and wanders away anyway. Maybe he’ll attack tomorrow? Like depression, Godzilla is a monster that can be temporarily tamed, but never truly defeated. The Heisei’s era drab visual look is definitely something I struggle with after the pop-art style of all the colour Showa films.

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 31 of 46 What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, By any other name would smell as sweet. – William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet Sure, but not when that name is Biollante. Yeah, Biollante is basically a kaiju created by combining Godzilla’s cells with a rose. It may sound a little silly to have a movie where Godzilla fights a giant flower, but it’s entertaining as hell. Godzilla vs. Biollante picks up where the preceding film leaves off. It continues the more serious tone, but also mixes in some of the craziness of the Shōwa era as well. It basically takes The Return of Godzilla and cranks it up to eleven. There’s much…

A Walk Amongst Monsters #63 “We are a lethal weapon!” At what point are you considered a mad scientist? I’m going with “combining Godzilla’s cells with a rose containing your dead daughter’s soul” as the threshold. I mean, it’s one way to create your Kaiju opponent. And luckily enough it’s the good guy! But unfortunately it’s a plant and Godzilla breathes atomic fire, the odds aren’t in your favor is what I’m saying. This keeps with the Cold War tensions from the last film by having the central plot be an arms race with multiple countries trying to obtain Godzilla’s cells. A good portion of the opening stretch is just different nations soldiers and spies killing each other and bombing…

combines the seriousness and geopolitics of return of godzilla with the supernatural whimsy of mothra vs godzilla, to great effect. the introduction of psychics is very cool and fun, and i love the scene where dr shiragami is creating biollante late at night in his lab, rain pouring down, very gothic. i think the plot falters a bit when they try to do the spy stuff, i’m much more interested in the weird science, but it’s never really boring. biollante is a fantastic kaiju, kind of an inverse mechagodzilla if you think about it. her first form is so awe-inspiring. the shot of the giant rose in the lake is breathtaking, mystical, gorgeous. the mist surrounding her, her gentle movements,…

Green blood goopfest that lives up to its amazing poster. The rubber suits look so good in this, the human plot is not too shabby either, and there’s some next level monster fighting—a perfect balance. I love this era of Godzilla so damn much. Seriously considering buying the poster for this right now.

KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! Movie: an incredibly tense, pretty fun film that keeps the trend of taking away all the silliness from Goji by turning him into this lethal, towering, destructive monster that just aims to wreak havoc and light-beams his path through Japan looking more monstrous and pissed with those big pointy teeth and roar of terror, all heightened by an awesome score that, when Goji blasts into the scream raises the tension and when it’s not, it either sustains the suspense or works in the fantasy through whimsical melodies. The whole human plot with the conspiracy, crazy experiments and military action. Bellora design looks really cool and she proves to be a pretty distressing and scary antagonist with the…

rare for a godzilla film, the monster stuff is the weakest portion here, with the coolest looking godzilla enemy ending up just being a minor nuisance more than anything. human stuff is great michael crichton-esque biothriller fare, with tense shootouts and heady conversations about humanity’s burgeoning irresponsibility over technology

Beginning to notice that Godzilla films are to Japan what the Bond films were to the UK in the late 20th century. The same drugs involved I assume

Nothing to say here too beautiful and very nostalgic film the biollante is really cool and continues to be one of my most favorite kaiju

Could have been much better if Biollante actually showed up. When I say she maybe had 5 minutes of screen time I mean it. It was depressing. Like she’s so cool so waisted in her own movie. I’m very upset about this.

Seriously improved effects and cinematography in the Heisei era (cool miniatures, smoky nighttime cinematography… although Godzilla himself still pretty low-tech), but the human characters remain extremely forgettable. Biollante looks pretty cool. Also really funny that the villains are agents a fictional gulf Arab petro-state called “Saradia” where everyone speaks phonetic English.

Godzilla fights a flower monster harboring the soul of a dead child, but the movie seems way more interested in its subplot about evil Americans with thick Japanese accents perpetrating corporate espionage. I think it would be interesting to graph the sentiment toward America in Godzilla movies over the years, because it seems to be all over the place.

“Kiss you boys” will stay with me forever. If I had to review this movie in one sentence, it would be “not enough Biollante”. This was a WEIRD one: styled after ’80s action flicks, thematically all over the place, with some really odd inclusions (psychic kids? A made-up evil Arabic country on top of the already evil USA megacorporations? Human souls are real and stored into genes, maybe?), and, unforgivably, very pro-military. At the same time, it was veeeeery funny,…

2026 Cult Movie Challenge #44 – Week 34: Tokusatsu Week. I find this one a bit odd, mostly in terms of its tone, which feels confused in its own context as well as in the context being a sequel to Return of Godzilla/Godzilla ’85. I wasn’t expecting such an upbeat atmosphere in comparison to the last movie, and it really threw me off in a lot of scenes when the score starts playing it’s more wacky tracks. Not to say…

The fights between Godzilla and Biollante were lackluster. Easy work for Godzilla! With that being said, the characters were amazing, loved the plot, loved the acting. Some very cool scenes like the girl using psychokinesis on Zilla.

Date: 23/08/26 Watched at: Parents house Watched with: Alone Some of the best moments of the entire series so far, especially when she gets the ESP kids to paint their dreams and they’ve all drawn Godzilla – excellent. Also the “Godzilla Memorial Lounge” is truly great stuff. Biollante is one of the best designed monsters of the series so far, and the most impressive puppet design. Amazing how the performers managed all the tentacles and animatronics. When it stabs Godzilla…

Godzilla and Biollante aren’t monsters. It’s the unscrupulous scientists who create them that are monsters. Godzilla vs biolante with the showa era done the human charicters are more a focus here and it’s one of the reasons it’s another great kaiju movie. It starts with english diolog and a news reporter covering the story of the events of godzilla destroying a whole advanced city in one day. The japenise goverment end up making biolante which is an anti nuclear something.…

After listening to City Pop all day Sunday then going out for sushi, we had to get a Japanese movie in on Sunday night. Godzilla and Criterion, name a more iconic duo. I grew up on the Showa Era of Zilla movies so I don’t have any nostalgia for this one. Love the suits and the practical fx, the miniatures…all the hallmarks of a dope Zilla thrilla. This was a bit of a let down though. Maybe too much going on with the story. I couldn’t help but wonder though if Mr. Elden Ring himself, Miyazaki-sama was influenced by Biollante for some stuff in that game.

Hi Audrey, from Little Shop.of Horrors 👋🏽😁 Muito legal.

Definitely on the higher end of this era of Godzilla films. A solid science fiction premise that has sort of an ecological message is a good foundation for the film. Then add in the pretty entertaining man in a suit destruction that typifies Godzilla films and you have yourself a pretty entertaining film. Recommended for fans of Kaiju movies but I also think it’s strong enough to appeal to broader audiences as well.

TREMENDA PELICULA!!!

Godzilla film 18/35 (as of 2026) Seikima-II and Godzilla in the same movie. If you know what both of things are, you know this is going to rule. I’ve been watching the Godzilla universe as sequentially as I can, and there is a WILD shift in tone and aesthetic away from the previous movies happening in this one. For the better. The Hensei era is in full swing right out of the gate.

The introduction to Biollante feels very Resident Evil. Two competing factions in a corporate espionage battle break into a genetic research lab to steal some secret experimental bacteria, only to mess everything up in a gunfight and accidentally unleash an unkillable mutant plant monster. Also gave me shades of Friday the 13th 7 with the whole “and there’s a psychic girl here for some reason” thing going on. Really just feels a bit too convoluted and messy for its own…

I’m very glad that these are actual movies now, but this one is all over the place. Biollante is a cool concept, but they don’t do enough with her, and the movie has a real problem with knowing when it’s over. 6/10

this film had me with mixed emotions. i couldn’t tell if i enjoyed the plot or was annoyed by it. by the end of the film i was spectacularly surprised by how crazy the final battle was. the cinematography was insane for how they went about showing off the kaiju fight

“if we continue doing the same thing we can’t call it a new era” bars being dropped in a movie where godzilla fights a giant mutant rose. soundtrack goes v hard i love the godzilla theme so much,,, reminded me of shin godzilla since i saw that one first but think this one’s better at balancing the silly fun godzilla action with the bureaucracy bs.

This one’s far more cinematic than the previous. I do wish this had more emphasis on Godzilla, as this movie doesn’t really need him to work. Love Biollante. Don’t have much to say about this one, still slower than I’d like it to be.

I haven’t dipped my toes much into the giant pool that TOHO uses to film the water battles of Godzilla of Godzilla. 🙂↕️ There was the time i “watched” Final Wars (skipped through the people talking to get to the fights) and I’ve seen a few of the American takes on the character (didn’t really like them that much) All that to say, this was fun. The human plot was silly. I love a damn puppet though. The Biollante is…

really really solid entry in the godzilla franchise!! i didn’t expect it to be as good as it was going in. was especially impressed by how good it looked- the 80s stretch of godzilla films looked incredible, even the cornier ones. i do wish biollante had a larger presence in the film, but even so, i enjoyed this!

Ridiculous usage of foreigners speaking poor English (almost unintelligible) – just have them speak their native language and subtitle it! First introduction of Miki & psychic abilities – works well in this film given the silly setup of the scientist imbuing the “soul” of his daughter into Biollante and needing to have someone there (Miki) to explain what it’s thinking… also she is able to sense Godzilla’s awakening within the volcano. Introduction of “G cells” and bioweapon development as a means…

Flesh should not be doing that. Great movie. Faith and fear get tangled together in a really effective way. Very close to a favorite.

- After the previous Godzilla attack, a miniature arms race ensues to collect his cells. Concerned over Godzilla's possible return, the Japanese government uses the cells to create a new bio-weapon, ANEB (Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria). They seeks the aid of geneticist Genshiro Shiragami, who's experiments result in a new mutation.
