When presented with four possible scripts, director Masaaki Tezuka was unimpressed by the story outlines Toho had for the next film in the Millennium series, and offered to write his own. Quickly, GODZILLA: TOKYO S.O.S. (Gojira Mosura Mekagojira Tōkyō Esu-Ō-Esu, 2003) formed and in a rare incidence, features a bit of continuity within the series, directly following the events of GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA (Gojira tai Mekagojira, 2002 – my review), and while being a more underrated and maybe underappreciated entry in the Millennium era – but if anything, features the peak of the tokusatsu effects at this time before Big G went full CGI, it’s also a fascinating study of a reversal of the common question within the Godzilla films…

Cinematic Time Capsule 2003 Marathon – Film #128 “A defense force spokesman says that it will not run wild this time… as it did before. ” Mothra and her fairies return to Tokyo to try and convince humanity to stop making a weapon out of the bones of Godzilla… but they don’t listen and now it’s up to everybody’s favorite kaiju moth along with Godzilla and even Mechagodzilla to teach humanity a lesson. I don’t wanna spoil it for ya, but by the time it’s over the Tokyo Tower will need to be rebuilt… again! This one strongly favors monster mayhem over character development. but on the plus side, the action is relatively well done in this outing from the Millennium era. BONUS POINTS for the larvae twins and their mysteriously spunky weapon. ”You must send them back to sea” Oh My Godzilla! Cinematic Time Capsule – 2003 Ranked

Mothra returns, everyone ignores her extremely sensible advice, and Tokyo pays the price….again. Mothra is THAT bitch.

A Walk Amongst Monsters #88 “Mankind is not meant to touch the souls of the dead.” Well that was disappointing. Being a sequel to the incredible Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and being the only sequel from the Millennium era, you’d think this would be something special, but what you’ve actually got is an agonizingly ok Godzilla film. It’s basically Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla… again. But with a dash of Mothra vs Godzilla mixed in for good measure. Essentially it’s a retread/homage with some decent moments. One of the best things about the film is it’s connection to the original Mothra. Hiroshi Koizumi returns to play the same character he played in Mothra some 40 years ago! It’s such a joy for…

Okay, but why does Godzilla looked so incredibly hot in the early 2000s back then?

You can’t reheat leftovers three times in a row! I was VERY generous the first time I reviewed this, but I hadn’t watched the previous Millenium films in quick succession, because oh boy, this might as well be an internet exclusive epilogue to the previous films. The flair and energy Director Masaaki Tezuka had previously displayed is absent and the new characters are pale shadows of shadows. Still, a lot of monsters crash into a lot of buildings, so it automatically gets three-stars.

I’m not sure I know how to process a direct sequel within the Millennium Era, but here we are… A fascinatingly militant aesthetic in its approach for a good bit of this film and unreservedly weird for its full 91 minutes, Tokyo S.O.S. still ends up serving as something of an homage to the much better (and even weirder) Mothra vs Godzilla from 1964, despite themes of nature vs technology, the exploitation of natural resources at will and what exactly AI means in this world and if we should fear it or not. Now these sound like strong themes for a movie about a lovable nuclear lizard punching and laying out other kaiju, you say… Well, yes, on the surface…

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 44 of 46 This seems to be one of the more divisive films in the Godzilla franchise. There are many fans who consider it to be one of the worst Godzilla films. However, there also appears to be a large number of fans that love the two part story comprised of this and Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla, and who would consider it to be one of the high points in the franchise. Personally, I probably fall somewhere in the middle. I really love the idea of MechaGodzilla in general, and I really enjoyed the execution of that idea in these two films. Furthermore, anyone who’s been following my reviews for the Godzilla franchise should know that the…

KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! A bunch of Mothra fans in LB I see, a bunch of Mothra fans that weren’t very fond of pissed-off Goji tearing that poor moth apart. Seriously, my dude here was ripping her apart. Brutal stuff. I found a lot of the cinematography to be great, especially during those fighting scenes with the fog and all. The laser beams. The gust attacks. I really dug this version of Mecha and its origin and the way it’s used against Godzilla. I remember people being hyped by him in the American version, and now that I’ve seen these films and the previous era, I can see why. But yeah, in terms of the battles, it was all super awesome.…

Its nice, I guess. Once again, the suits are amazing (Mothra looks her absolute best here), the sets are great, and Kiryu is as badass as ever. It’s also nice to see this act as a legacy sequel to the original Mothra film. Unfortunately, it lacks the magic that Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla did. Akane is replaced as the main character with a guy I forgot the name of, the final battle is pretty much the only action scene in the…

It doesn’t reach the heights of its predecessor in terms of drama, it sucks Akane got such a downgrade from an engaging protagonist to a cameo here. I didn’t need her to be the main character again per se just wish she had an actual role. Even a second scene at the end would have been nice way to wrap things up. But this is still a solid duology of stories in the midst of the more unfocused Millenium Era…

The follow up to Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. Brings the story to a tense conclusion and again has some really great action. Falls slightly short of Against Mechagodzilla, just because the final stand-off drags for a moment.

This should’ve continued the arc set up in Against Mechagodzilla better. It was weird to abandon all of those characters yet continue the exact same storyline with Kiryu. I enjoyed the Mothra connection yet it felt a little forced into the plot (especially how useless Chujo becomes). The battles were a step up from the previous installment. They looked a lot better, but still were too reliant on CGI.

pretty fun continuation of Against Mechagodzilla but nothing to write home about on its own, really have Nothing to say here. always fun to see my girl mothra killing it in the spotlight

Perhaps we’ve learned one thing: Humility Mothra is stunning. Sweet creature. Incredible practical effects as always (and good looking CGI, used with the utmost restraint. Respect). Around the hour mark it felt a little samey, but it quickly picked up again. Was expecting more Akane in this one, so as a sequel it played a little odd for me. Love the end sequence.

i like that the story continues and the fights aren’t to bad always good to see Mothra

Kinda sad how much worse it is than the previous one but it’s still good and has some of the best fight scenes in Godzilla. Millenium era overall did the legacy sequel thing perfectly this time being a sequel to Mothra vs. Godzilla from the 60s which it did really well. And I can’t lie I got a bit emotional when Chojo said sorry to Kiryu.

We spent a whole movie building up a great underdog protagonist only for the continuation to completely discard them. Still a mecha anime, just with more uninteresting characters now.

Not as good as the last one but it’s nice they actually did a follow up to one of the movies of this era instead of just starting over again.

A direct sequel in the Millennium era? Well, this is a first! This one picks up a while after Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. Kiryu is still being repaired, Godzilla is sleeping off the tie (I mean he didn’t die to the absolute zero cannon and just kind of swam back out to sea). This one also functions as a legacy sequel to 1961’s Mothra! We see the return of Chujo, played by Hiroshi Koizumi once again, from the Queen of the…

WOOO this is fun!! Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S is a very solid follow up to it’s predecessor Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. The film retains everything great about Against MG, while also expanding on it. Mothra and the Shobijin are both incredible additions to the film and they bring so much to the table. Especially during Mothra’s battle with Godzilla. The visuals are also an improvement over the first film. They were never bad in Against MG, though this one is a bit…

another visually impressive film with its set pieces, lighting, and commitment to practical effects. the film capitalizes on sunset vibe and aura shots of Kiryu from the previous movie and does not loose MechaGodzilla any aura points. Chujo is the goat and possibly one of the best human characters in the franchise. the longest battle of any of the films, lasting almost the entire movie, love when OG Godzilla channels again and I appreciate the respectful send-off the origins.
-

Genuinely took me so long to get past the first half hour of this movie, it was so unbearably boring to sit through. Once the action started however, and we actually saw all my goats get to it, it picked up some. But MAN it was slow to get to that point. The biggest positives are definitely the designs, this era of the character has definitely had some incredible Kaiju designs for all our favorite monsters. However, it is so…
