Terrific. It is at once a nostalgic throwback to the classic Godzilla movies, while also feeling like a radical reinvention of the entire franchise. Godzilla as a metaphor has never been more eloquently handled, and the film’s messages about war, peace, guilt, trauma, and wreckage – on scales both grand and intimate – are quietly, powerfully delivered. Excellent character development, set pieces, and effects. I can’t really imagine a Godzilla movie possibly being better than this.

“We leave you the future.” waited too long and could only see this in black and white, but wow– absolutely phenomenal. harrowing. cried a little and might’ve fully sobbed in a packed theater– actually made me scared of godzilla at a few points, there’s a sense of scale and terror here that felt so visceral to me. gonna watch it again in color as soon as i can. couldn’t stop thinking about the differences between american & foreign disaster films; we fictionalize aliens and zombies and world-ending events that allow us to imagine a tragedy we’ve never really experienced because we need to uphold the idea of war as necessary and death in the line of duty as honorable. absolute nonsense.…

96 Spectacular. Was initially skeptical with all the praise of the human-drama – a lot of it read like this movie is somehow the first Godzilla entry since the ’54 original to have believable characters and a satisfying narrative for the connective threads. And that’s obviously not true (watch vs. Biollante or vs. Destoroyah or vs. Mothra or even GMK for that matter). But what Godzilla Minus One does well – and it does a lot of things well – is re-frame the dichotomy between the human storyline and the presence of the titular kaiju. There’s an overwhelming dread to Godzilla’s appearances here – his first sighting is a jump-scare – and it’s mainly due to the effect that he…

Is it normal to come out of one of these movies having enjoyed the human characters more than Godzilla?

A return to form. A reminder that Godzilla was originally not about the monster, but about people. The monsters we create, the evils of government, the power of community— it’s all there and working in unison while still giving us the most catastrophic version of the G-Man in his 70 years of existence. A little insulting that the Hollywood adaptation of Godzilla is the most smooth brain interpretation of the character. Big monster goes rawr, Americans like. It’s more sad they’ve mostly been right. Oh well, Godzilla Minus One rips— breathtaking, devastating, but above all else, honest.

Two films now in 2023 have dared to examine the fallout and societal implications of WWII’s nuclear exclamation point: 1. A hard-hitting social drama chronicling years in the life of a man broken and haunted by his own failure to prevent the darkness and devastation that enveloped the world following the introduction of the atomic bomb and the inadvertent opening of a door to an endless plague of hopelessness and destruction set upon future generations; a film which truly encapsulates the sheer power, abject terror, and subsequent futility that humankind was forced to face in the wake of its own unimaginable creation; a story told through the eyes of determined engineers, scientists, and soldiers gathered in the name of national…

Godzilla is terrifying in this movie

American-produced Godzilla movies suffer from a lack of aboutness. That is, there isn’t really a reason for them to exist (aside from depicting cool monster fights). Setting the story in post-nuclear fallout Japan is essential to capture the true appeal of Godzilla’s mythos. The monster’s rampage of death and destruction doesn’t exist for mere spectacle. It underpins the greatest reason for why we fight: not to defeat the enemy at all costs, but so that we can live.
-
Z
now this is GODZILLA. He has always been an allegory for nuclear destruction and war and Japan knows how to portray it the best out of anyone.

Holy shit we can really have it all – authentic and poignant emotional drama and giant dinosaurs that shoot nuclear laser breath. What a film. Also I’m not saying, I’m just saying… this would shred as an anime.

Dare I say this is the best Godzilla movie to ever exist? -gorgeous cinematography -fantastic CGI & visual effects – a phenomenal score -beautiful writing -great story -and an ode to the classic Godzilla movies It’s simply perfect.

Even if Shin Godzilla is my favorite. This is really be the best Godzilla picture. It’s maybe the only one since the original that feels like an actual movie, that I could recommend to people. Not just to other Godzilla sickos such as myself.

Unos efectos visuales simplemente espectaculares.

Not nearly enough Godzilla. Acting was atrocious and over the top.

honestly the acting and the dialogues were really questionable, and some moments were really “meh” but on the other end my boy Big ‘Zilla was absolutely beautiful and the theme music is one of the best I’ve ever heard.
-
R
This was the most beautiful movie i’ve ever seen, the music tells the story on it’s own. You find yourself rooting for the humans for the first time ever in a Godzilla film. The story grabs you and doesn’t let you go. Not just another movie about mindless destruction but a movie that really has something to say and utilizes Godzilla to say it perfectly. The visuals were absolutely stunning The plot was incredibly well written The actors played their…

i liked this a lot 🙂 choosing to live in a society that values sacrifice and repaying a life debt more than living a life was a very powerful theme. also appreciate the hats, we don’t wear hats to dramatically take off like this anymore. bring that back

This movie was fantastic, loved the cinematography, coloring, and especially liked the story and characters. I found the movie to be very compelling and had very poignant emotional moments, while being able to wrap up each character’s arcs in a meaningful and satisfying way. I did not love how it was revealed that Noriko was still alive though, and I felt it slightly lessened the impact of the earlier scenes. I was able to suspend my disbelief of how she…

Solid traditional Godzilla film Not seen one from the west that explores ptsd/survivors guilt/purpose/redemption Im one of them Great performances Amazing special effects and sound design I don’t find Godzilla scary from a design standpoint more cool But I have to say the design In this boarders on horror, the design is pretty dread inducing and scary with the black almost infected but not like ripped look for the skin. How is this possible? Weren’t you a kamikaze pilot? You have have the nerve to show your face? You’re a disgrace! Look at what happened because of cowards like you! If you’d only done your job my children wouldn’t have died. It was like a prehistoric dinosaur turned monster. The local inhabitants called it “Godzilla.” Is that… Godzilla? Come to think of it this country has treated life far too cheaply. Poorly armored tanks. Poor supply chains resulting in half…

This is SUCH a good movie. Fuck dude, like a straight 10/10. The experience isn’t lessened at all on a rewatch, and the impact of the character writing, Godzilla’s magnitude, and the message/metaphors are some of the best in film history. Where Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla is a 10/10 on pure bias and subjective takes, Godzilla Minus One is a 10/10 on an objective level.

godzilla gets nuked at bikini atoll in this and goes postal. if I was just chillin with da bob and became radioactive you better believe I’d be destroying the world too because why the hell are you bothering me in my home?? all jokes aside this was really good, and I enjoyed the human story a lot. at one point I turned to my brother and jokingly asked “i wonder what godzilla could be a metaphor for??” I feel like…

This film didn’t need to be a Godzilla movie, and it’s better for it. It’s good food for thought on whether we need to let the principles and ideologies of those in authority over us define us. I do wish it had taken a closer look at the militarism and nationalism of Japan during WWII, but I do understand it wasn’t the story it wanted to tell. I don’t blame anyone for feeling the movie falls a little flat as a result. I suppose it’s a massive credit to the movie that I’m even raising that point for a Godzilla movie in 2026. 😛

Godzilla big. Go gyaaaaoooon. I like. Interesting metaphor for US/Western imperialism. A human story that so happened to have a monster. Loved it. No notes. Would rewatch. Measured runtime: Didn’t measure 🙁

Very campy in a fun way. I guess the shame plot wasn’t sticking hard for me since its about not kamikazie-ing, but that gets filled with the not helping when godzilla attacked part. Godzilla like in the last movie was great when attacking. Movie is very much based in the ocean so when we do get to see him on land it was very rewarding (esp with the required train scene thats in the last godzilla movies ive seen now).…

Probably the best Godzilla film since the 50s. As many have said, the human characters are so engaging and just as great to watch as the big man himself, Koichi’s guilt and his arc was genuinely beautiful to watch over the course of the film, whenever there was a reference to the original I low-key got so hyped, the Godzilla main theme was placed wonderfully (nostalgia bait (for a movie I watched like 3 years ago) does in fact work 😞.) Both excited and scared for the sequel, we’ll see where it goes, great time 👍

The idea of setting the story in the aftermath of the war is interesting, but I found it difficult to connect with a narrative centered on wartime heroism. I was left uneasy by the contradiction of ostensibly arguing that lives should not be sacrificed while, at its core, celebrating the willingness to risk one’s life for others. When it comes to fighting an overwhelmingly powerful enemy, the question of how to defeat it is usually the most compelling part, and…

Easily the best Godzilla movie ever! Great story with good thematic elements. Action sequences are next level, especially the Ginza sequence. The soundtrack 😭😭😭😭😭 5/5. Cgi can be spotty but it’s very minimal. The ending is something for sure but other than that …
