12 This is still a miserable mess. Lacking the scale and weight of 2014’s Godzilla while still committing to plodding exposition and cardboard characters. It takes about an hour before anything interesting happens. Most of this is boring filler humans talking in rooms about the monsters while Bradley Whitford is tossing out Joss Whedon-esque zingers. The monster fights, when we finally get to them, are smothered in debris and weather effects, with frequent cutaways and a nonexistent sense of geography. It really strains the Mythic angle to the point where I don’t really know what I’m looking at. At least the color-grading is teal/orange soup for most of its runtime. King of the Monsters tries to course-correct the issues of the Gareth Edwards’ installment but ultimately resolves none of it while adding a bunch of its own problems.

It’s like AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, with Vera Farmiga as Thanos and the monsters as her Infinity Stones.

12 The classic example of a creative team pulling the worst from its predecessor and failing to develop on its potential. Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, as an origin for the new ‘zilla incarnation and a study of humanity’s insignificance amongst ancient beings, was a miraculous success even if it chose to portray the titular creature as a vehicle of Spielbergian suspense. The constant cutaways were playful and frustrating, lending the climax an extended fanboy payoff that worked for some and didn’t for others. Fair enough. Enter Godzilla: King of the Monsters, directed by modern cult horror auteur Michael Dougherty, which offers neither satisfying humor or credible scale for a giant monster mash, all while being stuffed with a truly terrible human-storyline,…

Was. Für. Ein. Brett.

Honestly a virtually perfect albeit very Westernized recreation of a Heisei-era Godzilla kaiju superbrawl picture. I mean they even have a Godzilla Defense Force-equivalent airborne superfortress. Deeply stupid, overpopulated with human characters, still a total blast. If only they’d stop staging the monster fights at night in CGI dust clouds.

Having your only real Japanese character use a nuke to awaken Godzilla in your American adaptation is uhhhhhh

So, I’m not entirely surprised that this is getting mixed reviews. I think it’s something that afflicts the Godzilla franchise as a whole, rather than just this latest film. In my opinion, there are two main reasons why people dislike certain Godzilla films. First, we must consider the fact that Godzilla is just not for everyone. It’s a very niche franchise that began as a series of sci-fi B-movies, featuring actors in rubber monster suits wrestling amongst, or demolishing, miniature buildings. And, for the most part, it has maintained that 50s B-movie vibe over the years. It’s not exactly the kind of thing that appeals to everyone. Furthermore, the Toho films are often targeted at a young audience. There’s a…

Si se llegan a haber esperado un par de años a qué Millie Bobby Brown se pusiera el botox, se habrían ahorrado el CGI de Godzilla. Ella les habría valido para ese papel. Película larga y sin mucho alma.

The fight scenes were beautiful, and they used the original mothra theme in one the scenes with Mothra. and they used the song in the credits. I loved seeing alot more kiju being recreated for the american audience. those that I knew about were Godzilla, King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan. 10/10 for fight scenes, and there were alot of them. but story kinda lame

J’ai vraiment aimé tout le film, godzilla est vu comme un dieu ( alpha ) et il y a une vraie hiérarchie. Gidorah en impose vraiment.

Rodan’s just the best, man.. I remember, watching the Claire de Lune teaser for the first time, in cinema. The best, cliche trailer ever. Gave me the shivers. Crazy, how the third silly Ghidorah head meme is an essential now.

Almost every single human character in this one is fucking MISERABLE to watch. The writing is horrific, the acting is almost entirely mediocre at best (Ken Watanabe and Charles Dance were alright but Ken Chandler and Bradley Whitford were BEYOND insufferable), and the cool effects were dulled by the 20 billion particles they put in front of every action set-piece. It was fine, some of the Kaiju stuff was kinda sick (as to be expected) but man what a middling…

Over hated. I like this movie, this was the last time Godzilla felt like an animal rather than a character (if that makes sense). Burning Godzilla was my favorite part, and ghidorah was one of my favorite villains.

Suspension of disbelief is too difficult for me. Though not my 7 year old son. He loved it.
