A Walk Amongst Monsters #86 “As the only nation ravaged by Godzilla, I think it’s my responsibility to convey the pain suffered by our people, the suffering of the victims.” I’m glad they decided Mechagodzilla needed glowing red anime scars under its eyes. That shit looks cool as fuck. There is not a single issue I have with this film. It’s pure entertainment from beginning to end. Every aspect of this works for me, from its characters, to its plot, to its action and its effects. This isn’t just the highlight of the Millennium era, it’s a highlight for Godzilla films in general. They waste no time with the film opening with Godzilla attacking Japan during a intense hurricane. Let…

I like the part where Godzilla screams so hard it makes the bones inside MechaGodzilla remember Hiroshima.

Praise ye the nuclear lizard gods for a competent Godzilla film. So many of our friendly neighborhood nuclear lizard’s pictures have come and gone of that which make no sense whatsoever. Ridiculous. Absurd. Laughable. Inane even. So, it was a bit of treasure to watch this one that from the outside looked like just another odd entry into the big guy’s canon, but actually is linear and even, dare I say, sensible. Strangely, Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla knows what it’s doing. The story not only makes sense, but the editing and pacing serve it really well. This is a bit confounding as one of the trademarks of a Godzilla picture is virtually not making sense. But, not to outdo itself, as…

Haven’t anyone ever told them to never to build a giant lizard robot out of the bones of a mega-sized nuclear-powered murder lizard? That’s just asking for the robot to become processed and wreak giant murder robot lizard havoc! A simple, straightforward, but playfully stylish, remake of the creative team’s previous attempt at Godzilla, but now with all the rough edges ironed out so it hits with maximum power. I love myself a protagonist with a death wish, who bickers with a teammate, only to realize SHE WANTS TO LIVE and (in the process) gains that teammate’s respect. There’s an amazing moment where Mechagodzilla fires all of its rockets at Godzilla and the Big-G just stands there nonchalantly. (whispers) This is what PACIFIC RIM should have been.

KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! Just look at that poster, hands down one of the most badass I’ve seen. The others are stunning and awesome, but Mecha (Kyriu here) comes this close to beating Goji’s arse, and that’s not false advertising, as there’s some great action between the two, involving Mech grabbing Goji by the tail and starting to swing him around. Mech isn’t joking around. The human stuff is neat; again, they serve the film instead of just getting in the way, especially the whole story arc with Akane, with Shaku doing a solid performance as well as the rest of the cast. If I was building a giant robot dinosaur I would simply not give it the soul of another long dead giant dinosaur who was known for homicidal rampages it seems like a bad move however that is just me.

A metal titan caught in the shadow of its flesh-and-blood predecessor, Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla is a roaring reminder that no matter how much you beef up, family still lands the hardest blows.

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 43 of 46 It could be argued that the Godzilla franchise has never been overly concerned with continuity. While there was the odd film in the Shōwa era that built on ideas established in a previous film, most of them seem to be standalone films. They aren’t even consistent in tone. This becomes even more complicated when we take into account the number of times the franchise has been rebooted. For a brief while, during the Heisei era, it appeared that Toho was attempting to establish some continuity between films. Many of the films from that era reference events from previous Heisei films. With the advent of the Millennium era, however, continuity goes right out the…

The moment Kiryu goes berserk, the first thing he does is let off a crap ton of rockets, then he goes on an awesome rampage that includes him literally walking through a building. This fucking MechaGodzilla iteration is to be treasured by all Godzilla fans far and wide. Akane is still one of my favourites out of main Godzilla movie humans, she’s one of the coolest characters in these movies without a doubt. Her story ties into Kiryu’s really nicely…

A new Godzilla emerges so a new team is created and they whip up a plan to create a mechagodzilla but it’s created with the bones of the og Godzilla and we see the battle between the two and ups and downs of It all ! Fuck yeah this ruled! Took elements I liked from Godzilla VS Mechagodzilla 1993 and ramped up the scale and heart of it. Solid action here. Not only is this the best design and take on Mechagodzilla, making him a Pacific Rim type fighting machine with the soul of the OG 50’s Godzilla, but Akane is easily the best protagonist this series has had yet. Her struggles and survivor guilt feels very much a precursor to what Kōichi goes through in…

This has got to be one of my top 5 favourite Godzilla films. Best Godzilla design, best Mechagodzilla design, best Mechagodzilla origin, arguably the peak of the franchise’s suits and practical effects, and some amazing cinematography. My ONLY flaw is that Godzilla was kind of a punching bag here, but that’s more nitpicky than a genuine criticism.

What is this against Mechagodzilla bullshit. “Against,” it’s supposed to be vs. goddammit.

Honestly not bad, really cool to see a more contemporary movie using scale models and dudes in suits playing the kaiju. I watched the English dub which was hilariously bad but in a funny way. Nevertheless, the characters were easy to understand and oddly endearing. Godzilla parts were awesome obviously, and mechagodzilla throwing hands near the end was really enjoyable. Plus, the movie uses the scale of the kaiju to have some pretty cool aura shots.

Very big step down from GMK. I really don’t know what Toho was thinking with this one. Especially since GMK was the most critically and commercially successful film in the Millennium era, it feels as though they wanted to fail. Going back to the director of Megaguirus was a weird move as that movie wasn’t good. That being said that was still slightly better than this as that at least had some charm to it. This film is thematically all…

You know, fuck it: 4.5 stars I have always been cool on Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla for many years, but this rewatch it really got to me. Godzilla has returned after decades of inactivity. Our hero is a female soldier who wants revenge on Godzilla for stomping on her friends. Meanwhile, the Japanese government has built a new powerful weapon designed to defeat Godzilla, but using it has dire consequences. Sound familiar? Director Maasaki Tezuka returns to essentially remake Godzilla X…

I never gave these few films a chance after Millennium/Megaguirus, though I got weird looks (as a Godzilla fan) from when I said I had never seen the Kiryu saga. I am happy that I did, though I enjoyed Tokyo S.O.S a little more. First of all… Awfully dumb name. Mechagodzilla isn’t even in this; it’s Kiryu, who looks like Mechagodzilla, though Mechagodzilla is way more marketable to audiences. Among those, there are too many Mechagodzilla titles… So, to put…

A fantastic concept for a Godzilla film that doesn’t nail the landing. Akane is definitely one of the best human characters we’ve had but besides her failure in the opening, we really don’t see her struggle and grow as she becomes a pilot. She just kinda…is? The time jump/montage made sense for the creation of Kiryu but we should’ve seen Akane training and gotten to know the rest of Kiryu squad better.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla confused me as a child because I thought it was a sequel to the other Mechagodzilla movies. But, as is the case with the Millennium films, this one only counts the 1954 original as part of its canon (while also keeping Mothra and War of the Gargantuas canon, something new for this era at least). Masaaki Tezuka returns to the director’s chair after Megaguirus, and honestly? This film is basically a better version of that one. Similar story beats and…

This film is full of great characters, themes, and stories that unfortunately are left in their simplest form. Nothing in this movie is expanded upon, with a few exceptions, which really holds back this film from achieving greatness. The main characters are all fairly likeable. Akane Yashiro has a potentially exciting backstory but it is left completely up to the imagination for the most part. Tokumitsu Yuhara has a fascinating scientific specialty that is departed from almost immediately for the…

Will or government turn and run? Or stand up and fight? In a hypothetical scenario, what would the financial impact of a singular Godzilla attack be on Japan? Conservatively speaking, Godzilla would probably cost Japan in the ballpark of ¥20 – 100 trillion and most likely forcing a deep recession, but even more potentially economically catastrophic, would be the fear of where Godzilla would attack next, so it makes sense why in these films like GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA (Gojira tai…

I was expecting more honestly. Kiryu’s design is awesome, the start was promising, and that’s all I really have to say in favor of it. The effects are still so bad and reverts to being impossible to overlook from GMK’s better usage and hiding of them. I thought the story was going to go into this deep emotional exploration of Akane, the little girl, and Kiryu, but what we got was multiple shots of the girl looking sad and empty conversations. Also, it becomes very noticeable when a track is used again and again that it becomes a teeny bit annoying. Also, the ending of all time?

This was definitely the first real crack in my egg before I knew what transgender meant. Akane (and by extension Kiryu) is a fundamental character in my transition and finding myself. I had never felt so connected to character, how people treat her, how she treats herself. Her character development in tandem with Kiryu and his development is also handled very well. Kiryu, the Mechagodzilla created from the original 54′ Godzilla skeleton, killed by the humans who awakened it only…

Godzilla sucks what??? In all seriousness, this movie is a great showcase of all the king can do. I love MechaGodzilla, every movie with him in it makes me smile. Forever my favorite Kaiju. This iteration is incredible in both concept and design. Akane’s awesome, but why the hell was she trauma dumping on a child about how she’s worthless? This film takes a familiar story (humans building Mechagodzilla to fight Godzilla) and adds a fascinating twist on it. Kiryu containing the soul of the original Godzilla not only adds tragedy to his character, since his existence is one of agony, but also makes him a threat if he loses control. It’s interesting from a commentary standpoint, but it also adds character to…

It’s fun but there’s a cool twist about halfway through that I felt could have gone in a much cooler direction. Big fan of seeing OG godzillas bones. Kinda odd how many of these era are just direct sequels to the originals instead of playing off each other at all.

The human character’s are very good in this one and this film introduces us to the coolest Mechagodzilla

R
easily one of the best looking Godzilla films, utilizing the ultra-wide framing incredibly well through the bulk of this. and wow! what an opening scene! i enjoyed so much of the action here, it is goofy at heart and understandably serious on top. also a rare occasion in the franchise where the human-to-human relationships don’t feel flat (Godzilla 1984 rivals this in that regard). there are some rough shots in the final battle but ultimately don’t leave a sour taste…
-
B
Pretty great from the get go. Godzilla and Kiryu look so good, fantastic designs. Solid pacing, straightforward story, and serviceable characters.

S
didn’t go in with any real expectations at all but was very pleasantly surprised! i think the tight scope and compact story were the right way to go after gmk and they work really well with a great battle at the center of it all. while i really enjoyed the previous entry they were featured in, mechagodzilla has never really been a favorite of mine but kiryu is easily my favorite rendition of the character. also those bomber jackets and hats were fire!!! guess i’m a fake fan because i had to google who bigfoot gaira is. sigh
-
K
Of the Millenium films I’d put this one 3rd. Not quite as good as GMK and unfortunately just not as important to me as G2K. I have seen it a great handful of times though and it occupies a sacred space in my soul for being a really good movie to test your surround sound speakers on. Michiru Oshima returns to score it and it’s her masterpiece. Total banger. Seeing Kiryu in action is also so fucking cool. Enough time has past that we can all agree it is the best Mechagodzilla design.

One of the strongest human casts ever for a Godzilla movie- Akane is such a great protagonist to follow and Togashi is such a real mf, a good narrative on the topic of life and death how we should give the living a chance and respect the dead, and the climax hits like CRACK bro honestly top three Godzilla fights, and Kiryu is easily the best depiction of Mechagodzilla by far

Yeah this deserves a lot more love. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla manages to achieve what a fair amount of Godzilla movies (unfortunately) fail to do, and that is offering an actual memorable protagonist. I think Akane is a solid character and is very well handled! Her back story & the opening scene give the audience a genuine reason to care for her, and by the end of the film, she gets an actual satisfying character arc. Alright yeah yeah, the film has…

This remarkable example of a Toho Godzilla spectacle, one of the last done with the classic “suitmation” special effects method, is a perfect starter Godzilla movie for young viewers. It starts almost immediately with a slam-bang Godzilla vs the military sequence,* so kids can immediately understand what a Godzilla movie is and whether or not it’s too scary for them. Then, we get some lovely flashback footage to the original Godzilla, Mothra, and War Of The Gargantuas, letting kids know…

-
S
Hooolllyyy fuuuuucckk dude! This is so fuckin peak!!!!!!!!! You’re telling me, they took the original Godzilla’s bones from the end of the hit 1954 film and turned it into a mechanized robot version of the current godzilla? But the mechanized machine has retained a sense of self and is alive in its own right, and yet still chooses to fight for the being that not only killed him but dug him back up and turned him into a weapon? His mechanized memories live on and he fights for that which once hated him.

This one really succeeds at what separates the better Godzilla movies from the generic ones, i have to score pretty high for that alone. I just didn’t appreciate godzilla being a background character to Mechagodzilla for the majority of the film

NNoah Ollendick 8 月 8, 2026
So many Eva references. The fact that War of the Gargantuas is in this movie’s canon makes me unreasonably happy. A film about how women’s experiences with pain is just as integral to Godzilla’s place in culture as man’s self-destructive hubris. Hideo Kojima had to have been a fan of this because I spotted a couple similarities to Metal Gear Solid 4.

This is the closest I’ve seen a Godzilla movie come to showing how when two people are lonely and in pain, they are also sometimes most open to sharing vulnerabilities and connecting with one another. And yet at the same time, they are also more susceptible to being exploited. It goes beyond typical blockbusters by incorporating mythic touches similar to Neon Genesis Evangelion, and delivers a narrative that blends large-scale kaiju stakes with the intimacy of human wounds. Ghosts of…

I really liked this one as well. Millennium has some good hits even tho it suffers from being so disconnected.

C
OOOO I like the gimmick in this one. Mechagodzilla actually being the original Godzilla is such a fun idea and it allows for a whole new path of discussion. And like the last film, it touches on another forgotten part of the original film, that being Godzilla as an actual wild animal. The 1954 film has so much to it that a lot of the points it makes can be lost in the discussion of the themes that are at…

More of a retread of Godzilla vs. Megaguirus than I was expecting but also more punchy than that one. The fights between Mecha/Godzilla are quite spectacular and I love the aspects of this that call attention to its digital enhancements which are undeniably cool and rad. And once again we get another great Godzilla film that is a contender for my favourite entry in the franchise, and no it’s not just my bias towards Mechagodzilla. The story is one of the best so far, having the J-SDF using the bones of the original Godzilla to creat Mechagodzilla is a genius idea and connecting this film with other non Toho kaiju films is also really cool. It flew by so fast! But easily the best mechagodzilla design yet! I mean.. kiryu?! Anyways the main character here is actual super cool and while stoic shes pretty dynamic! The only problem with this movie is that theres barely any mechagodzilla vs Godzilla action, but if we’re going by old school showa standards- THIS IS A1! the final bout is phenomenal and the millennial era really had awesome sets and even better suitmation kaiju action! A good film, with some really good story beats, but I feel more character development for Akane and other characters would make the story beats hit harder. Mechagodzilla has been a concept that every Era of Godzilla has gotten a chance to swing at so it only makes sense that Millennium gets their own shot. Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla é provavelmente o melhor filme da Era Millennium e mostra como a franquia ainda conseguia se reinventar sem abandonar sua essência. O longa entrega exatamente aquilo que um fã espera: destruição em larga escala, batalhas memoráveis entre kaijus, excelentes efeitos práticos e uma narrativa que consegue equilibrar ação com momentos dramáticos. much more national military propaganda than i remember (probably thanks to the year) however Kiryu is my best friend. gf loved it so now we get to do so many kaiju movies 🙂 02 Goji tanking every missile and beam from Kiryu, realizing the bones of his ancestor is inside it and screaming once, turning the machine evil and causing the eyes to forever be scarred is indeed, the very best shit in the world btw

i appreciate that the only movies they chose to be in this continuity were Godzilla (1954), Mothra (1961), and The War of the Gargantuas.

i don’t really know what to say about this one. it was fun. sometimes silly with the fight scenes (which i love.) kiryu is awesome. so is this godzilla design. epic movie.

A lot of really cool ideas here, and Kiryu’s shoulder charge was genuinely wild. Actually liked the human characters which is rare— felt like there was quite a bit in this one that lays the groundwork for Minus One… except that one didn’t create a robot out of Godzilla’s bones.

This movie was the first time in the Godzilla franchise I was torn on who to root for. The human side felt so heartfelt, and the creation of Kiryu made me so excited. I was sympathetic to the characters and their struggles, and wanted to see them succeed. At the same time, I wanted to see Godzilla wreck stuff as always. The movie balanced that, and not only delivered epic kaiju battles but also an ending that left me more…

Some boofed compositing/cgi shots in here, but Godzilla vs Gozillas bones in a Gundam Exoskeleton is fucking tight. My only question for the upcoming destroy all monsters remake: is this Mechagodzilla 1, 2 or even possibly 3? Or does he prefer to go by his christian named Kiryu.

Kiryu is THE Mechagodzilla. Built from the original Godzilla’s skeleton, carrying the soul inside him and somehow one of the most compelling characters in the entire franchise. I also didn’t expect how much the emotional core would get me. Akane is such a great protagonist – carrying guilt, looking for redemption, finding it in the most unexpected place. Her arc gives the film a human centre that keeps everything grounded. And the battles are extraordinary ! Physical and visceral and full of that specific tokusatsu craftsmanship that I find myself increasingly in awe of c:

Pretty good addition not gonna lie. It’s about JSDF pilot Akane has a fateful encounter when a new Godzilla emerges in Tateyama. As a countermeasure, a cyborg named Kiryu is constructed from the remains of the original. The machine is discovered to harbor the restless soul of the original monster as Akane must learn to find value in her own life as well. Kiryu is dope af! They up there with the original fr! Story wise it ain’t too bad…

This is really great. It’s an admittedly simple movie, but it’s concise and well-paced. This wastes no time getting to the action while mixing in a fairly competent B plot Rule of cool also wins here. This iteration of MechaGodzilla is awesome. Very Evangelion

Pretty standard Godzilla flick. Our boy is causing a ruckus as usual when the Japanese government unleashes its robot version of the giant beast. Per usual a battle ensues with Godzilla taking care of business and returning to the ocean to sleep or play with fish, who really knows what he does down there. Watched: Los Angeles, CA

A movie very concerned with the classification of Godzilla either as an animal or as a force of nature, eschewing the metaphor of the monster in favour of a hypothetical: how should such a being be addressed by humanity? The human drama’s very involved here, lots of internecine conflict within the Japanese defense force, which is treated like an emergency response organization that just happens to employ gigantic microwave cannons and jet fighters and giant robots. Despite all this they…

Hands down my favorite Toho Godzilla film from the Millennium Era, both in story, pacing, action, and Kaiju designs. I will forever maintain the opinion that KiryuGoji and Kiryu have the best designs for their respective Kaiju. MechaG has never looked this badass. The acting is as great as it can be in a Toho Godzilla film, spotlighted in the engaging human plot line (which is rare for the vast amount of Toho Godzilla films), with impressive visual and cgi effects and accompanied by a compelling score by Michiru Oshima.

one of my favorite godzilla stories, this movie proves that millennium godzilla gets even fucking cooler with each installment. the new design in goji is menacing and sharp, making it one of my favorites. unlike other godzilla movies, the plot stays very grounded and simplistic and has very strong characterization. I love the idea of expanding the lore of mechagodzilla and connecting it to the original. the action sequences are some of the series’ best visually and ideally. Kiryu’s design…
