Why doesn’t anyone ever listen to the prophecies of doom from the old guy with the thousand yard stare?

“For those watching at home, this is no play or movie!” One of cinema’s all-time great analog technical achievements, a film that can’t help but be read as a kind of psychic national catharsis. There were even two or three effects shots that, at least in my weirdo brain, resembled nothing so much as 9/11 footage. There’s a scene in this where the politicians sit around and argue about whether or not the country brought this on itself.

The war was won, but the United States needed to stake their claim on Japan. Instead of letting the Soviet’s declaration of war with the imperialist country force Japan into surrender, the U.S. unleashed the most destructive weapon the world had ever seen up until that time. It wasn’t a deterrent to more war, but a message to the Chinese, the Soviets, the Japanese, and the rest of the world: the U.S. bourgeois class would take what they wanted with the most powerful weapon they could find. Since then, the threat of radioactive armageddon has kept the human race close to extinction. Japan, being the only country to experience the devastation and mass murder of an atomic bomb, has built…

the underwater sequences are mesmerising. a country still lingering over the national loss of so many citizens, and the horrifying fear that more could be lost via nuclear fire, creating a creature to serve as national catharsis in a time of attempted healing is extremely beautiful to me. also the man in the eyepatch is very hot

I showed this to my dad for the first time tonight, and this was his response after the final frame: “Well, that wasn’t about Godzilla at all.” I think I may have a new convert on my hands. Mission accomplished!

1945: atomic bombs are dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. 1954: this movie is released. In a nutshell, this is why movies are an interesting art form.

Objectively perfect. Godzilla is terrifying. The grainy black and white photography is jaw-dropping. Every shot is iconic. One of the rare movies you can point too and say “All of it is classic.” The narrative is gripping from the opening rush of information without a clear protagonist to the quick little reveals of the monster, and finally, the big Godzilla attack – which hasn’t lost its power to shake a viewer after decades of being recycled in lesser films. The tragic finale even gives Big-G his own sad King Kong-like death. If you don’t like this, I’d say that art just isn’t for you.

an important detail that modern godzilla movies always get wrong is that godzilla actually has tiny little ears

So… maybe it’s a bit Crazy to put such a high score Even if i didn’t get what they were saying , because we only had Japanese under title (Watched in Japan on Netflix – just wanted to flex) . I still feel like a got kinda what was happening, but I really need to see it once while understanding it. The musik was great and helped with it also. I would have loved to understand more the tension happening…

The Landmark of Cinema The practicality, techniques, and editing in this film are so impressive, even after 72 years. When I was watching it, I didn’t mind the obviousness of some scenes where the sets became miniature models. Instead, it really added to the uniqueness of the film. The vastness and epicness of the film are what I love most about it. But one thing that really struck me was how the film symbolizes the trauma that Japan experienced. Keep…

Incredibly bleak and layered emotional film that delivers in a multitude of ways. Some of the performances are a bit dated but nonetheless every character functions well within story. The post-war dreariness is palpable is this film and really adds to the tone of the movie. The graphics while extremely dated; almost add to the enjoyment of this movie… the lack of CGI usage is charming yet also adds a terrifying realism… as the miniature models are completely destroyed by…

7.1/10 Woulda rated it higher but I didn’t catch 67% of the dialog. The music and the action scenes were awesome though.

Wow, this movie about a monster was actually really deep and introspective, and not so much about the monster destroying stuff. I’m very hopeful about the next entries in the saga and I bet they’d be even more profound!

An absolute master film with the use of practical and early special effects it really sells the devastation caused by Godzilla. The story has a beautiful focus on the human side of the attacks, the way many characters either become obsessed in their own fields on how to view Godzilla or showing the raw emotion of uncertainty and demise in a suspenseful questioning if this is the end for humanity.

A lot weightier than I expected. I knew it was about the nuclear trauma of Japan, but the additional scientist with his own WMD and the paleontologist trying to save Godzilla were additional angles that really made this work for me. The special effects were also pretty awesome all things considered. Also those radio broadcasters were absolute pros

Rewatched and I’m gonna have to give it the full 5 this time. Honda somehow created a movie that was radically different to everything before, spawned an entire genre, and yet stays distinct from later kaiju films in such a profound set of ways. Japan’s post-war dread is palpable and unsettling throughout the film, played through unambiguous references to Hiroshima/Nagasaki and the Lucky Dragon incident, and also the film’s visual language. The eerie shots of Godzilla obscured by smoke and…

Somber drama punctuated with montages of destructive retribution. I’m so glad to have finally seen the first film. Im astounded that this movie was able to be released just NINE years after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It throws scenes of makeshift hospitals, injured citizens, crying children into stark relief, scenes that by todays standards would even be considered cliche kaiju fodder. Godzilla encapsulates a nation’s generational terror as vengeful agent of chaos. There are moments here that are…

My childhood was a steady stream of Saturday morning cartoons and Sundays filled with kungfu and monster movies. I feel like is watched every iteration of Godzilla movie and all the lesser-than knock offs (I’m looking at you Gamera! We really love you best!) However, I never watched the OG until this day. It was such a guilty pleasure to see this lumbering 220 pound heap of rubber lurch out of the water and crush Tokyo. I loved the use…

I did not expect to be sad becasue of Godzilla but here we are. Godzilla’s size may be inconsistent within the movie but no version of it is inconceivably large. It isn’t ethereal. There’s no curtain of smoke or clouds to emerge through. I understand smoke and dust is what disasters and wars really look like. I’m saying movies don’t need to copy real life to feel sharp. When Godzilla comes out of the sea it just pops out. When…

Road to Godzilla Minus Zero – Movie 1 out of 38 Gojira continues to remain a masterpiece on all fronts. Incredibly strong screenplay and cast, resonant themes of the dangers of nuclear weaponry and sciences we cannot abuse, incredible score and direction, and of course, that eerie and unsettling vibe the film has. I’ll never truly be able to express how amazing Gojira is.

Watching the entire franchise before the very first one was definitely a weird choice on our end, but it actually made me retroactively appreciate how grounded and serious the original is. Watching this, you understand how influential it became and how it was able to spawn such a long franchise. The special effects are very ambitious and still look good, and the dramatic beats actually land because they’re taking it seriously and have something to say. A timeless classic for a reason
