KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! Plot assassination, princesses getting possessed by three-millennium-old aliens, Kaiju volleyball and the world gets saved by a gigantic larva that reminded me of that big worm in Freddy vs Jason who convinces a pissed and reluctant Goji, who has a grudge against planet Earth, to team up with a supersonic pterodactyl and an alien hydra’s arse (?) and that way we, humankind, would be saved. And we know about all of these thanks to some tiny Japanese twins with lovely singing voices. I’m having a blast with some of these films. Whenever Goji dances and gets pissed I laugh and aww at the same time. He’s such a giant, menacing cutie. All in all, while the human…

The Cutest Monster Showdown Ever 🥰 Mothra’s disciplinary action, using its silk web to cover Godzilla and Rodan, is a hilarious touch. It’s reminiscent of a big brother or sister trying to reign in unruly siblings, and the laughter that ensues adds a lighthearted layer to the monster dynamics. Godzilla’s decision to throw rocks instead of unleashing his atomic breath is a whimsical choice. It adds a playful and comedic element to the monster showdown, showcasing Godzilla’s unexpected sense of humor! What a legendary actor he is 🔥 Rodan, the giant pteranodon, playing dodgeball with Godzilla is a scene-stealer. The dynamic between these two iconic monsters turns into a playful game, showcasing a side of kaiju interactions rarely explored. The…

Criterion Collection Spine #1000 (Part 4) (Foreign language film – Japanese) A kinda neat but mostly terrible and hilarious outing for Godzilla as he gets some playtime with his kaiju pals. “Mothra’s talking to them. What do you think she’s saying? … How would I know? I don’t speak monster!” So do people who hated the bombastic CGI action fest of ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ 2019, actually like the original version of this big monster mashup between Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah? Here is a rundown of what you can expect from this movie story-wise: Human characters waste of time bullshit, human characters waste of time bullshit, human characters waste of time bullshit, bullshit, bullshit, bullshit, look there…

Astonishing how much more satisfying this film is than its American adaptation, how much more creativity and like, direction is packed into far briefer kaiju fights, how much more personality the monsters have, how much more gleefully goofy its human drama is. Great movie.

There is something painfully real about the fact that the first time Godzilla appears on-screen as a hero, he’ll only jump into the fray is if Rodan apologizes. Just like the humans that bully him, Godzilla is a petty jerk. If you take a step back and consider our conscious existence as a species, it is absurd that we let people die of starvation, get into wars, and act like huge assholes on a daily basis. We have resources for everyone to live a happy life, but we refuse to give anything up because the other person didn’t ‘earn’ it, that it’s their fault for being an asshole, and that they really don’t deserve any power because we should first…

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 13 of 46 A lot of people think of Mothra vs. Godzilla and King Kong vs. Godzilla as Godzilla films. I don’t believe, however, that Toho thought of them that way at the time. Sure, looking back now, we can see that Godzilla became the most popular of Toho’s many kaijū, and has been featured in 32 Toho films, but it wasn’t always that way. Take Mothra vs. Godzilla, for example. Every time I see people talk about it, they refer to it as the fourth Godzilla film, or the third Godzilla sequel. There are people who marathon all the films with Godzilla in the title and don’t even get around to watching Mothra. But, if…

“Godzilla says he has no reason to help humans. Humans always make trouble.” features a political assassination subplot, a princess possessed by extraterrestrials, and a scene in which a massive caterpillar larva tries to convince a gigantic irradiated lizard and a supersonic pterodactyl to put all of their respective differences aside and team up to defend Earth, which they must learn to share with humankind, against an alien hydra (the entire conversation is translated by the larva’s harbinger/guardians, a pair of miniature Japanese women). one of my favorite kaiju pictures.

A Walk Amongst Monsters #34 “Godzilla’s saying, “We have no reasons to help humans. Humans are always bullying us””. Godzilla not only squashes his beef with Mothra, he even teams up with her to save the planet! You know what we call that? Growth. But seriously this film marks an important turning point for the big man as this begins his transformation into a hero. Sure he spends most of his screentime getting into a slap fight with Rodan (and getting the hell pecked out of him), but it’s a start. Ghidorah is an icon of course, especially considering he’s one of the first truly crazy Kaijus we get in this series. Before it was big animals/dinos/bugs but here comes…

Pretty wild movie about a princess who is being hunted by assassins and gets possessed by a five thousand year old clairvoyant spirit from Venus that’s trying to warn Earth about the arrival of a three-headed space dragon. Occasionally some monsters show up too.

Fun monster smackdown that introduces aliens to the whole thing. Ghidorah is a cool villain.

Godzilla and Rodan fighting is so dorky I love it. Really surprised how many shoutouts there were in this Godzilla movie, with one of our antagonists eventually looking like the villain of a John Woo movie. Good movie.

We have no reason to help humans. Humans are always bullying us.”

So far, it’s the worst film of the Seva era; I don’t know, nothing about it really grabbed me, and I didn’t like the plot either—it’s a movie about Ghidorah, who only shows up at the very end.

Mothra attempting to solo Ghidorah in her larva form was the most badass thing I’ve seen this year

D
That one scene where the girl monster has to convince the two boy monsters to stop playing head tennis with a rock and quit being ass-hats, so they can combine avengers-style to stop the 3-headed monster, by squirting them constantly with “webbing” (something Godzilla finds hilarious), might genuinely be one of the funniest scenes I’ve watched in a cinema in a long time. Had the pleasure of seeing an outdoor screening of this at the Barbican! It was really great to see a huge audience, young and old, come together and celebrate 60+ year old cinema icons from the other side of the globe! What was most remarkable was how well the jokes have held up; whether it was the sibling banter between Naoko and her brother, or the otherworldly antics of the Venusian prophet, or the immature feud between Godzilla and Rodan, the audience was constantly howling with laughter! And I, to my great pleasure, was too. 😊

Watched on the big screen as part of Barbican’s outdoor cinema, exactly one year after doing the same thing for Godzilla (1985). Extremely serious and silly in equal measure, I’d forgotten just how long it takes for any real kaiju action to happen in this one but when the brawls come, they’re very funny. Godzilla sure did prefer ‘throwing and kicking rocks’ as a signature move back in the day. Oh and randomly, Olivia Wilde was there tonight watching along…

So we’re comfortably at the point in Godzilla where it resembles PG WWE. As a fan who enjoys when Godzilla is threatening and purely destructive, watching Rodan and Godzilla laugh at each other and hold their bellies was really disappointing. Seeing how goofy Godzilla is being treated already during his fifth movie is probably the worst part for me. On the bright side Ghidorah is built up to be a serious threat. The way the suit flies and moves is…

I wouldn’t even say these movies are good, but I do feel compelled to watch more. They’re just enough. I think there are some genuinely good things about this one, but wow they just miss the mark on many aspects. It’s really making me wish I could make one of these. I have so many ways they could improve. They need to go for a slower paced and more chess like combat sequences. It’s too funny when they just throw…

Godzilla says: “We have no reason to help humans. Humans are always bullying us!”

PREFACE TO ALL MY SHOWA ERA GODZILLA REVIEWS This year I expect to make my way through the entire Showa Era (1954-1975) of Godzilla movies in their original Japanese language. Other than the original film, I’ve only known them from the often-mocked English language dubs, some with American television cuts and inserts (most egregious with the first film). It will be interesting to see them in their original language. Sure, as the series evolves (devolves? Never!) into more silly…

First of all there is some magnificent costuming in this movie. The volleyball match between Godzilla and Rodan was epic until baby Mothra silly strings them into submission lol. Still obsessed with the twin fairies. They could be in every Godzilla movie and I’d be pleased as Punch. The princess is stunning and SLAYS the entire time. Love her. Also love that Mothra’s plan was basically flying silly string. But I guess it worked lol.

Those Selginan dudes who didn’t wear their Elizabethan ruff collars when they came to Japan are all fucking cowards (I don’t care if they’re supposed to be undercover and blending in; that’s your national heritage… I assume). Mothra trying to convince Godzilla and Rodan to stop squabbling and unite to fight King Ghidorah, and then eventually just jumping into the fray herself even though she’s in her larvae form and can’t really do much damage, ugh, best girl, could I love her more? You just know that Ghidorah suit was a pain in the ass to be in/operate, but it sure looks magnificent on screen.

Not a ton of kaiju action here in terms of volume but i like what is there. The final fight with King Ghidorah is a lot of fun, I like how Godzilla and Rodan take turns lugging around baby Mothra. The actual human plot is servicable enough. The intrigue plot with the princess was decent, and the brother/sister cop/reporter duo had some nice interactions together.

godzilla and the venusian intrusion maybe it’s the post-mcdonald’s sedation talking, but this was a snooze. the onslaught of glp-1 ads didn’t help. one of those “i could have just looked up the fights on youtube” godzilla movies (most of them). i liked when the princess or psychic twins or whoever started narrating the end fight like a richard attenborough doc

This movie should have been called Rodan, The Dickhead Bird. Ghidorah is barely in this one. This is one of the few Godzilla films where I am more drawn in by the human (venusian?) aspects than the monster fighting. The Shōwa camp is beginning to creep in. Pros: • All the human characters’ plot in the story (with the princess’s assassination attempts, and the princess being possessed by a Venusian) are actually interesting enough to stay invested in • The buildup to Ghidorah is well done and his first destruction scene shows off his power well • The characterization of Ghidorah as the ultimate evil world ender is cool • Like in the prior movie, Godzilla’s reveal of him rising from the water is a cool shot…

You can tell who the bad guy is because of his sunglasses. Despite Ghidorah being the titular kaiju and a destroyer-of-planets-level threat (and royalty, somehow), a prepubescent Mothra steals the show. Has some issues balancing a meh human plot that should be pretty high stakes with the goofy monster stuff (Godzilla and Rodan being a couple of petty bitches) that takes way too long to get to, but still a fun watch. 3.5 Venusians

GHIDORAH WILL TURN THIS PLANET INTO A TOMB!!!!! Ghidorah the three headed monster starts to show Godzillas shift in character turning from villian to antihero. In this film the stakes are high as not only does Godzilla return but so does rodan. There is a great amount of destruction in this film which is absolutely a need for a Godzilla film. And the monster battles in this film are once again peak. Overall ghidorah the three headed monster is once again one of the best films in the Godzilla franchise. UP NEXT IS INVASION OF ASTRO MONSTER

In the hallowed words of Xavier: Renegade Angel, this movie is “about as deep as a bowl of soup,” but still a lot of fun. This is the film that truly began Godzilla’s transition into a children’s entertainment icon and codified his heel-face turn. It’s definitely pretty silly in both concept and execution, but I was never bored during Ghidorah, so I’d say the film succeeds at what it’s trying to accomplish. Godzilla Score: 4/5 Other Kaiju Score: 4.5/5 (Mothra Larva, King Ghidorah, Rodan) Kaiju Carnage: 4/5 Soundtrack Score: 3.5/5 Human Story Score: 3.5/5 Wow Factor: 4/5 First off, this movie is absolutely hilarious. You have a serous human and some pretty large stakes. Then you have Godzilla amd Rodan acting like the chuckle brother all the way through. This is not a complaint, the was so fun. King Ghidorah debut and he is a great villain. The 3rd act was great.…

Watching every Godzilla movie 5/38 “We have no reason to help humans. Humans are always bullying us.” Poor Godzilla 🙁

Okay I fucking hated the first 40 mins of this cause the human plot just kept waffling about but as soon as Godzilla entered, it all clicked into place and it was soooo goofy! This is where the goof officially gets going. I just wish there was more Godzilla or Rodan or Mothra in the first third so that it wasn’t as boring to start. It’s like the avengers 1 of the Godzilla universe lol

Absolutely silly as shit. Godzilla laughing at Rodan getting silk-slapped by Mothra slug rocks.

Godzilla is so cute in this one! Him laughing at Rodan, and his little face while arguing with Mothra. Such a cutie! He’s never done a thing wrong in his life!

A downgrade from the previous film, but picks up in the last act. Big shift for the franchise in this one as Godzilla turns into the Earths hero. The human story in this starts strong but drags on way too long. The practical effects are good in this and the fighting is the best so far up to this point. Love Godzilla and Ghidorah’s entrance and the team up of Mothra and Rodan. Ghidorah’s movements are so manic and menacing,…

Did I watch this twice in 2 days? Yes. Paul needed to see GZ and Rodan being little jerks to one another while also making some valid statements about humans.

It has all the things I liked about Godzilla vs mothra but with a bunch of additional shit. Good amount of destruction and the human plot element was fun. I liked the alien princess prophet and the scene when the little fairy women translate for the monsters when they decide to team up against ghidorah. I love that they don’t explain things. It’s so refreshing to not have to think about anything. You just absorb and you don’t have to question anything.

The physical comedy in this movie is amazing. When Godzilla first sees Rodan he starts genuinely tweaking. Later, when the two of them are fighting, they start head butting the same boulder back and forth. The sub-plot with the Princess is a bit out of place, but I understand the need to involve the human characters somehow.

This is an interesting movie. It’s the first appearance of King Ghidorah! And the first time these kaiju team up. All the Kaiju scenes are insanely fun and ridiculously silly. Godzilla and Rodan play volleyball with a boulder and it’s hilarious. While I do love the Kaiju scenes I can’t say the same for the human plot. Out of all the Godzilla movies I’ve seen this is the one with the worst human plot. It is ridiculously boring and just makes the movie drag on forever.

Godzilla film 6/34 (as of 2026) “What are they saying?” “How should I know? I don’t speak monster.” Neither do I, but this is a classic movie for a reason. There is a balance that happens in all kaiju movies between explaining the scenario, and just rolling with the action. Too much explanation and the film is tedious. Too much rolling with it and it becomes impossible to follow. Ghidorah does a good job walking this tight rope to be entertaining and comprehensible.

Man everyone looks so dopey in this one, especially Godzilla himself Oh also additional thought, one of the best themes for some reason? Just really adds to the spectacle of 4 Kaiju fighting

I’ve been endeared to that little asshole rodan the comedy of these movies is coming out now like crazy

The setup is long in this one – and even a gang of assassins trying to take out a princess who claims to be from Venus isn’t enough to stop it getting a little dull – but once it finally gets going it’s pretty awesome. I really like how expressive the monsters are here, it adds a lot to the entertainment value. This was my first time seeing Rodan, since I didn’t realise he had his own film, but I…

Definitely one of the more insane subplots. Imagine waking up in the middle of that. Ghidorah is pretty cool. Three heads seems like a lot though, I can barely handle the one. The team up and final battle is pretty great. Definitely the less cool form of Mothra though

1964’s Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster was something of a landmark film in Toho’s rising Godzilla franchise. First off it was laced with faces from some prior entries like Takashi Shimura (the OG 1954 Gojira, Godzilla Raids Again) and Hiroshi Koizumi (the 1961 Mothra solo film, Raids Again, Mothra vs. Godzilla and later Tokyo S.O.S. in the 2000’s Millennium era). It also marked a turning point overall for the iconic kaiju as this was the first film where Godzilla takes…

Godzilla Movie Marathon #4 Ghidorah The Three Headed Monster was a fun ride and felt like a sequel to Godzilla vs Mothra with its returning cast and plot elements from the previous movie. I enjoyed the hook of the plot even if it was as silly as a fictional countries princess getting possessed by an alien and becoming a prophet, warning of Ghidorah. It was fun to see how her prophecies would set up the fight to come The final…

I just love Mothra’s little priestesses so much. 👯♀️ I remember nothing else about this movie lol
