WARNING! WARNING! QUIRK OVERLOAD! QUIRK OVERLOAD! I REPEAT QUIRK OVERLOAD! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I don’t think Garden State is even close to a masterpiece, but it’s definitely a good movie. You’ll either hate it’s weirdness or just let it roll over you. Great soundtrack and I’m in love with Natalie Portman. In the end, I was charmed by its kooky heart and found things to like but I doubt it’ll make a memorable impact on me.

Oppressive. Take every bad review that you have ever read about a Wes Anderson film and apply it to this movie. This is quirk for quirks sake. A lot has been said about the great soundtrack. I agree, the music on the soundtrack is fantastic. I also feel the same thing about the soundtrack from the film DAZED AND CONFUSED. And I also feel that both soundtracks are obvious and overwhelming. This movie drowns in its mise-en-scène. It has a specific look and feel, but it is all surface level. It never enhanced any action or character for me. The script is far too indie-precious, and Natalie Portman is the quintessential M.P.D.G. Sounds like it hated it right? I laughed…

I.didnt realise people hate this film I think its personally an awesome, cool film with a really strong briliant soundtrack. I loved this when I first saw it and stil think it works. I think I’m in the minority though of people who love this. I find it to be a charming, off kilter film exploring a character in their 20s and their feeling of.emotional.numbness and finding something to live for. It’s got a unique, strange sense of humour but I love that about this film.

Felt like the film left a lot on the table and really didn’t go far enough in anything. The characters all are pretty compelling, the soundtrack is really good, and the performances are all good. Especially Natalie Portman who legitimately feels like the only person committing to the bit. But this script is leading a journey that ends without concluding anything. I enjoyed a lot of the concepts here I just wish it was 20-30 minutes longer or it got…

Throughout life, you sometimes ask your dad his favorite movie. For some reason, one of the times I asked, this was the answer he gave. The others: The Elephant Man, The Ten Commandments, and O Brother Where Art Thou?

Seeing more of Natalie Portman’s range this month! Not sure I want anymore of this though .. Definitely a film you needed to catch pre-2010 or before you turn 21 (at a generous push, 18 realistically), neither of which I managed to do. Thought the soundtrack glazing was ott until they pulled Nick Drake b2b thievery corporation, pretty fun stuff. Also young Zach Braff was hot, who knew?

The og manic pixie dream girl movie. Charming with the best soundtrack. I gotta admit, Zach Braff was overshadowed by 2 powerhouse performances and it wasn’t his fault, and it maybe on purpose since his script definitely let them shine. Doesn’t offer something new but it’s one of my comfort films.

Actually much funnier than I thought it’d be. Really enjoyed most of it except for Natalie Portman’s “super quirky out-there” character that felt cringy cliche and confusing. Was really expecting a reveal that she was actually sixteen the whole time. Her character didn’t land for me. Worth it for the comedy.

natalie portman might be the OG y2k manic pixie dream girl, zach braff might be the OG y2k whatever the opposite of that is, and in my memory this movie might have been floating along on soundtrack fumes but honestly it held up better than i remember. bring back quirky main character vehicles!

I honestly do not know why this movie gets such a bad rap. Yes of course there are cliché quirkiness aspects of the time. But can’t we agree that Natalie Portman and Zach Braff and Peter Sarsgaard all played their parts to utter perfection? Not to mention the supporting cast. Jean Smart? She was phenomenal as that struggling but always really loving mom who’s crushing on Jim Parsons’ weird medieval times knight? Ugh. I love it. It’s really human -…
-
G
i’m loving the indie vibe from this and natalie portman is IRRITATING me. not sure how i feel about her. probably want to slap the ever loving shit out of her his fucking motorcycle. gives me the giggles. he could get away with it in a small town. but honestly. i would have gladly accepted his invite to ride on it. the fucking houses are enormous. maybe i should move there loved this movie. i wish i could have friendships like this

Weirdly nonchalant and extremely try-hard at the same time. So many moments had me physically curling into myself from secondhand cringe…and I loved it. This film had so many great elements and was undeniably fun to watch, but it felt too disjointed to ever fully come together, and ultimately wasn’t cohesive or compelling enough to be truly great.

An amazingly awkward but confused film. They do an incredible job of capturing those ridiculous vapid conversations you have when you’re young and haven’t yet developed your own personality. However, the film does manage to be a bit cringe in its own right by straying away from irony and lapsing into seriousness.

Garden State is a weird film that has me wondering about the odd combination Braff’s intelligence and intuition. He seems to intuit a really interesting story of social decay, but instead of concluding it as a tragedy or a call to action he suggests we should just accept it because it is what it is. The film ends happily, and dumbly, with a celebration of its characters sinking into the darkness. BIZARRE ALSO THE NATALIE PORTMAN CHARACTER IS TOTALLY POINTLESS AND PERHAPS INCAPABLE OF CONSENT (does she have a developmental disorder?). SHE ACTIVELY HARMS THE FILM FOR EXISTING IN IT. D

I’m gonna start hating every single human being on Earth who hates this movie. This is my Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or, like, 10 Things I Hate About You i loved it
