I get so emotional when I think about Gamera. He is such a good man. He has saved the human race so many times

The key thing to Gamera is that he’s always the underdog. Of course, he’s forever in the Big G’s shadow, but beyond that, the best movies that Little G’s stars in understand that the scary-looking turtle can only be a friend to all children if he gets slobberknockered and covered in his own blood. In the same way that children respond to seeing power on screen, there’s something deeply empathetic about an outwardly mean-looking giant taking its licks, but ultimately, standing up, and saving the day. GAMERA 2 is sloppier than the previous film, with a fuzzy grasp on the human stuff (Hey! Where’d the main characters go?), but it features an absolute murderer’s row of beautiful effects sequences. It’s…

Gamera launching off into a beautiful blue sky after eviscerating a powerful foe is consistently one of the best things in all of cinema. And if you disagree with that statement – don’t talk to me.

KAIJULY: GAMERA, THE MIGHTY TURTLE The previously jokey, campy, silly, and dumb Gamera takes a dark and serious turn. Theological?…. as our little turtle finally grows to become this turtle-looking Goji… I mean, I cannot be the only one who got some of that vibe? That final battle was dope. Legion is such a badass queen. The train sequence. There are some truly remarkable moments of tension and suspense, bolstered by effective comic relief, yet the overall atmosphere is surprisingly melancholic and bleak. The cinematography, once again, is great. The old stuff was nicely shot, while the more modern stuff actually feels pretty cinematic. Sure, some of the CGI hasn’t aged that well, but instead of distracting, I’d say they actually add to the charm of the film. Wow! I’m shook. The first part of this trilogy was very well done, but this shit is on a whole other level. I mean, this is better than almost every post Shōwa Godzilla film. There’s a lot of similarities to Godzilla vs. Destoroyah and Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, storywise. However, the execution of that story is far superior in this film. Earth is invaded by a swarm of creatures, referred to as Legion. The first time Gamera encounters them, they cover his entire body from head to toe, crawling all over him, ripping and tearing at his flesh. When he attempts to take off, with his signature spinning move, he sprays green blood all over the side of a building. Eventually,…

Perfect sequel. The first Gamera didn’t exactly leave much room for improvement in terms of quality, so they did the smart thing and made this one TOTALLY different. Gone are the comfy, summery vibes of Fukuoka and replacing it is snowy landscapes of Sapporo, as well as straight up horror movie atmosphere and set pieces. The first movie ends in a kaiju fight between Gamera and a classy Rodan looking pterosaur in broad daylight with bombastic orchestral music blasting in the background; this one ends in Gamera duking it out with a fucking Evangelion Angel looking abomination in the middle of a blacked out city at night in total silence – which btw is not only the best kaiju fight…

Gammerah, Guardian of earth and lover of children A turtle with wings!? Pfft, isn’t that a bit far-fetched? After his rejuvenated return to the masses, Gamera quickly soared back into theater’s only a year later to give us quite possibly his most harrowing task yet against his most brutal foe in the epic blockbuster brawl that is Gamera: Advent of Legion! Whereas the first entry in the trilogy leaned more into a fantastical realm of reality with some kaijuism’s sprinkled about, Advent of Legion harkens back to the tactical socio-political tropes of old that have been the staple of the genre since the beginning. Though when I say this I don’t mean it as a jab towards the film, quite…

The Heisei Trilogy brought Gamera immense critical acclaim but also lots of bitches, so he ended up with crabs. Such is the price of fame.

God damn this film does a great job on making the stakes really high. We see Gamera take on The Legion and does this monster feel like a real threat. It took Gamera three run backs to finally take this man down and every fight he pulls some bullshit that we never seen before: Even Gamera pulls up with his giant piss death ray at the end. Its a shame there is a lot more slower parts here but the fights between these two guys really make up for it.

Gamera has one of the greatest kaiju roars in cinema, and his design during the Hesei era was a great leap forward from the 60s and 70s, but he never possessed the personality or gravitas of Toho’s monsters. This one has got less kid-stuff (a big plus) and more scientists and military personnel (meh), but I’m feeling a lack of aliens.

Big Lazer kills big monster, Deus Ex Machina at its finest. Don’t care if it doesn’t make sense, it was fucking cool dude.

Lost me some near the end, but Legion’s really cool

While it’s a major upgrade in monster effects from the previous entry, Gamera 2: Attack of Legion still feels bland. Godzilla vs. Destroyah is a much better version of this movie. Setting the movie in Sapporo is a nice touch though.

This one is entertaining. You have plenty of fun special effects. I really like the models in this. There are likable characters. Legion is cool most of the time. This one felt like more of a threat than the last entry. A kaiju movie worth your time.

This one came out just a year after Gamera: Guardian Of The Universe, but the production value increased exponentially in that short amount of time. The cinematography is great, the creature designs, practical effects, and set designs are the best they’ve looked in the entire series, and the story (specifically the human story) is really well written and executed. Some of the scene transitions were a bit clunky and awkward, but I could tell that was just a stylistic choice,…

While the previous movie had a Jurassic Park feel to it, this sequel goes more toward horror. The human element is more military based and the human characters introduced, are forgotten near the end. I have no problem with that, give me Kaiju mayhem every minute. The movie slowly builds up towards the new monster with first the appearance of human sized creatures, then a huge pod on a building wich sprouts the new great looking Kaiju. Gamera has more…

Its pretty much more of the same though I think this film takes itself a little too seriously and struggles to retain the campiness of the first film. With that said I think the creature design here is much better, I actually really loved how these intergalactic insects looked. Furthermore the Kaiju fights/set pieces are far more creative than they were in the first film. The music is vastly improved here and I love the addition of snowy landscapes the…

Gamera is still for the children! Even better than the first. The effects destruction in this is really top of genre stuff. It’s just so satisfying watching the buildings crumble in that miniature effects way. The way it starts out as quite a grim tense horror does wonders for the pacing, with genuine threat of doom established early. And goodness me Gamera gets fucked up in this. I don’t like to see my boy eating shit and he goes through it in this. This might be my new recommendation for anyone who wants to get into Kaiju – pure blockbuster thrills! Gamera, you’ve done it again!

Kinda crazy how this is better than 99% of Godzilla films. You watch this movie you are just impressed by craftsmanship. It’s serious, fun. And so well made

Happy birthday Eric! My first Gamera and this kicks all kinds of ass! The little alien insect Legion makes for a fun creature feature before the other Big G shows up and the big bug has truly astounding suit puppetry. It’s also surprisingly gory – obviously still a Kaiju so not gruesome. This also has some Shin Godzilla vibes where the military bureaucracy causes more trouble than the monsters. Definitely going to check out more of these.

Okay this was fantastic, just purely comparing it to Gamera Guardian of the Universe this is a massive improvement in terms of tone, Design and Motifs. Lets start with tone, while the first film built up Gyaos as a threat its done so much better with Legion. Far more of a horror tone especially the scene in the underground rail and the idea that both humanity and Gamera are fighting this extra-terrestrial hive mind monster. Giving Gamera this moment of…

I’d go as far to say that this film outclasses all of Godzilla’s Heisei outings in cinematic value. The special effects were great, especially the Legion drones. Highstakes as soon as the humans figure out what the pods will do.

“E perguntou – lhe ‘Qual é o teu nome?’ E lhe respondeu, dizendo: ‘Legião é o meu nome, porque somos muitos.” -Marcos 5:9 O segundo filme consegue elevar o primeiro e criar ainda expectativa para a resolução final. Essa Trilogia tem se mostrado muito feliz na construção dos núcleos humanos que apesar de serem participantes pontuais no enredo conseguem conduzir muito bem a história. Gamera, é uma tartaruga muito leal no fim das contas.

That’s what I’m talking about! This is exactly what I wanted, and more! What a spectacle of a movie, I really loved it. The colony-type kaiju concept had already been done pretty well before, for example with Destoroyah the previous year, but the way it’s executed here is absolutely perfect. The horror elements at the beginning of the film are especially effective, and they fit in seamlessly. And what comes after the creature reveal is super unique! The whole symbiotic…

This is an example of a sequel that does everything right. All that was good from Guardian of the Universe is here and most everything I didn’t like isn’t. The monster effects are top notch. Legion is a much more threatening villain with one of the best kajiu costumes put to screen. Like its predecessor, Attack of Legion wastes no time getting into the action. An all around great kajiu flick and a must see for fans of the genre

Legion is a killer villain and Gamera does some crazy stuff in this one, it’s a great sequel that ups the scale and has some terrific moments like the destruction of Sendai, I’m loving the different tone of these ones, very different than the originals (which I also loved)

Gamera 2 is a movie that understood what it needed to do. It understood that what audiences wanted was to build upon the stuff in the original and go from there. It mostly succeeds in this. When the kaijuu are concerned this movie really ramps up the intensity from the last one. The Legion are a dangerous foe that are like xenomorph bees slaughtering those in their path in order to build their nest that also explodes. Watching them swarm…

Bad CGI aside this movie is fucking incredible! It’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen 2 and 3 in this trilogy but they weren’t lying when they said these are some of the best if not best kaiju movies out there. I can’t wait to rewatch 3 cause I know that movie is an absolute cinematic gem 🔥🔥🔥

some great and genuinely unnerving stuff in this one, the scene in the subway tunnel was insane! gamera spins fast as fuck and legion is cool as hell, incredible creature designs too!

I had a strong urge to go back to this one after completing the trilogy because I thought I’d find a lot more value in it. Obviously I did, this entire trilogy is so very perfect

The practical effects and monster design on this thing go crazy. I love heisei Godzilla to bits, but there’s no doubt that heisei Gamera had bigger aspirations for this style of filmmaking, and it shows. This is already a top 5 kaiju film for me. There’s an alternate universe in which child Me saw this, lost his shit, and became a Gamera kid.

There is so much to appreciate in Gamera 2: Attack of Legion. The special effects, suitmation and action are among the best I’ve ever seen in a kaiju film. The sequence with Gamera sliding and breathing fire is reminiscent of Optimus Prime in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Seriously… the physicality and movement of the creatures are so impressive that it makes a strong case for suitmation over CGI. This trilogy has some of the spirit of the older films…

Very strong kaiju movie! Most effects aged very well, but there were a small handful of cg effects that you could tell were cg. Most cg effects though were used to transition into strong practical effects, so I thought that was a plus. The practical effects are top notch, and the scale of some of the destruction and other scenes in the movie were genuinely jaw dropping. The human characters were good as well, not so much building an emotional…
