The funniest part is that it started as a legit sequel to “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra”, and then they were like “Surprise! It’s a Dwayne Johnson/Bruce Willis action film with some sci-fi”.

The most shocking thing about this film is not that it’s superior to the first one, but that it is much sillier and more enjoyable than the first one by no other than campy man Stephen Sommers. In retrospect, that’s not much of a surprise considering it was written by the guys behind Deadpool/Zombieland, especially given the humor. As far as directing is concerned, Chu improves the film by coming up with some enjoyable action stunts that sticks with you long after watchinng the film. “We have a Joe on the premises” – Concerned Guy, There’s a part where The Rock says “Damn Ninjas” and it feels like the writers wanted to write the N-word. This is a pretty bad movie but in a way that is so stupid that I was occasionally charmed. Jonathan Pryce made me think a Pope was cool and he couldn’t save this script.. that’s how basic it is but I give extra half stars for Lee Byung-hun’s abs, an appearance by The Rza, and tons and tons of explosions. It’s like Fast and the Furious… but bad. Probably not, but I wanted to make sure I fully understood the Snake Eyes movie I was seeing tonight.

Meh. A lot of people are saying that this is better than the first, and I have to call a bit of bullshit on that. As inoffensive as this film is, it is also on the opposite spectrum of stupid fun that Rise of Cobra is. See, as dumb as Rise of Cobra is, it at least knows it, and lends itself to its own nice little campy tone. It runs with the stupid instead of trying to hide it, and I find that infinitely more enjoyable. Retaliation, while not masquerading as anything more than dumb fun, doesn’t have the same campy tone. Jon M. Chu’s directing path is so interesting. To start with the Step Up films and go to GI Joe and eventually end up making Crazy Rich Asians and Wicked is impressive to say the least. He injects some much needed energy into the film while remaining true to the cartoon without getting completely ridiculous with it. For me, there are so many vast improvements over the last film. First and foremost they finally nailed the design of Cobra Commander. The addition of Dwayne Johnson is a much needed charisma boost and the other cast additions are welcome including Bruce Willis. But the standout scenes belong to Snake Eyes. The mountain side fight is close to greatness and easily the best scene of the film. Idk. I’ve always had a good time with this one and would love to see this franchise continued in some shape or form. Either a new cartoon or some sort of film reboot.

“damn ninjas!” the embargoat has run away with my rating, but i’ll say this (again): this is a bitingly hilarious satire of Truthers, so ridiculous it makes the 1st film look like a Frederick Wiseman doc. Big fun. a bit disappointed by the action choreography given my love of Chu’s STEP UP films, but ninja mountain is wonderful, and the whole thing is peppered with huge laughs (and the villains’ plan is genius).

If I had seen this as a child, I would have definitely liked it. That said, I should start by admitting that I was never familiar with this film series (yes, I only know about it because of Lee Byung-hun, and I’m not ashamed of that). At first, I enjoyed everything—the plot, the special effects — but then it all started to fall apart. I think that if I had watched it during my early childhood, I would have definitely liked it, and this series would have held a special place in my heart. But unfortunately… I’m just glad it’s over; I got too bored. (Storm Shadow plot 🫦)

Both of these feel a lot like the early X-men films where the producers were embarrassed by the material so they stripped away all the color and personality. I enjoyed this one a good deal more than the first. The action is shot and edited a lot better, rising to be in line with other military movies of the time. They really nailed the costume design, especially Cobra Commander, as well as the look of all the vehicles and gadgets. Hot take I think this was a vast improvement over the first one, the action was a lot more well done and Dwayne Johnson’s character was a cool new addition. Also the story was a lot more engaging and it fixes its pacing problems the first one had. One thing I thought was a bold choice was killing off a certain character, lowkey thought they were gonna bring them back but turns out they were just straight up killed off. Still can’t decide if I like that decision or not.

Definitely a step down from the first movie. Cutting several characters from the first film, especially Rip, was a bad decision and made the sequel feel disconnected. Unfortunately, most of the characters in this movie are poorly written, with only a few exceptions. I also don’t understand why Bruce Willis is in center of the poster like he is the main character. In my opinion, the movie didn’t really need him at all. It still has some entertaining action, but overall it’s not surprising that the franchise didn’t continue after this.

J’ai surtout relancé ce film pour revoir quelques scènes qui me faisaient rêver quand j’étais petit. J’avais peur de le revoir à la baisse, mais franchement, niveau aura farming c’est du très haut niveau. Je pense notamment à Storm Shadow ( Lee Byung-hun ) et Snake Eyes ( Darth Maul ), qui portent littéralement le film sur leurs épaules. Et pour finir Bruce Willis en plein RP John McClane, c’est un régal qui me donne presque envie de revoir les Die Hard.

Retaliation ditches the silly, ridiculous action sequences of Rise of Cobra for more grounded action sequences. For that you will either enjoy this movie more or less than its predecessor. There are things I prefer here more to Rise of Cobra. Dwayne Johnson is a bit better lead than Channing Tatum was in Cobra, though I think Tatum is better in this film than Cobra and wish we got more of him. I prefer most of the character looks better…

I also found it funny that they killed Channing Tatum just so The Rock could be the main character. The first one wasn’t that good, but at least it felt like a fun campy adaptation of the cartoon. This one felt a bit more realistic and as a result, more boring. Commander Cobra outfit was looked great tho. I’d say costume design was the only improvement.

Saying this is the best GI Joe movie is a little like telling someone they’re the skinniest kid at fat camp, but it’s true all the same. Maybe I’ve got a bit of a soft spot because the first movie was such a head-scratching mess, but this mostly works because the cast is game, the action is clever and a decent mix of practical and CGI, and the screenplay is just tongue-in-cheek enough to sell things. Also, fantastic role for Bruce Willis. Would have been cool to see this get a proper follow up
